This is the second time I have tried to install this program on my Win 7 HP 64 bit laptop with no success. It downloads fine, extracts the files to a temp file, lets me go to the website to register and sends me the registration info but when I try to install it says beginning to install then immediately says an error prevented the installation even with administration rights. I give up.

I have a 2 terabyte HD, 3 internal drives with 1TB, and 4 external drives at 500GB. The amount of room I have doesn't matter at all. 116Mb for this is huge. Yes, to me that is an issue here. Not worth it. And maybe I'm not a total geek, but I have a lot of programs that are both 32 AND 64 bit compatible that isn't nearly that big. Doesn't need to be that big. If they want to give a 32 and a 64 bit edition, give a seperate download link. It's happened before, it'll happen again. If your overly worried about some big bad government person taking your drive then you probably should have it taken. As for this program, tried it, wiped a drive, still managed to retrieve files. Not many, but still did retrieve some. Can we get a forum for HOW the programs work and one for whiny people complaining about size, registration, required email, blah blah blah. It's pathetic I have to read through every comment just to find a couple nuggets of how the giveaway works.

Can it be installed and run from a flash drive?

To run Disk Wiper not from your hard drive you should create a bootable media (a CD or a flash drive), boot from it and use any feature of the utility.

Paragon is offering a tool FOC.
But how often do home users need this software?
When we change hard disks? Maybe.
Perhaps when the hard disks breakdown.
After they have broken down and cannot even connect to the PC, how do we "wipe" them?
Not all have sensitive information inside hard disks.

Anyway, for me it is simple. Don't need to bother. Because for me, the refuse that I dump goes straight into a compactor machine. The stuff is crushed under high pressure. Collected by dump truck regularly and sent to incinerator.

Two comments now by people who either can't read or don't want to; The amount of space this program takes up isn't the issue. It is the downloading of such a large file which is troublesome. As was rightly pointed before, not everyone has access to high speed, low cost internet.
The assumption of this is mistake too many software companies make - Microsoft, EA, Valve among them.

Cheers,
AUS_Doug

A couple of comments on points raised.

Firstly people talking about different overwrite methods and interpreting the comments about the Guttman method as meaning it doesn't work. No data has EVER been recovered from a modern drive that has been overwritten. That is overwritten ONCE. EVER. Any more is completely unnecessary, even if it's fancifully called DoD 3.824 (or whatever), and all Guttman does is provide 35 times more wear to a disk for absolutely zero positive gain.

Secondly, a commenter mentioned getting malware from one of Giovanni's suggestions. That doesn't surprise me, no one seems to realise he doesn't check out most of his so called recommendations - I have done and found they often include all sorts of crap with the installers, he repeatedly recommends ineffectual programs and recently even recommended a scam site's rebadged CCleaner clone.
I love that people recommend alternatives here, it's often more useful than the actual GAOTD program being offered. But I want them to be RECOMMENDATIONS, ie from people who actually use them, not just the results of a Google search, which most of Giovanni's seem to be sadly.

"The wiping software does not exist that the Feds can’t recover from."

Good grief people, the USA government cannot even build a wall on its southern border or balance its budget. But you believe they can do what no other lab on the planet can do?? Really??

Be sure and beat you old monitor to pieces too because maybe they can retrieve everything that has eve been displayed on it.

The problem with a mega sized download isn't storage size. Some people have slow internet connections and it could take hours to download. Also how so many thumbs down? I'm totally sure not 1% of the people who voted tried it out :)

There have been many discussions on security sites about wiping disk drives to erase data. There is absolutely no reason at all to physically damage a modern disk drive. A simple low-level format and complete wipe (one time) is all that is required.

Regardless of all the urban myths, no lab or government agency has been able to recover data after that process. Not one. Not for any price. Peter Gutmann's original article referred to old low-density platters which have not been manufactured in over 20 years. He later admitted that to stop the rumors to the contrary.

Personally, I download everything single freeware offering Giovanni recommends and have tried every one of them. HE HAS NEVER EVER BEEN WRONG - SO FAR.

THANK YOU GIOVANNI! And thanks GAOTD for TRYING to give us freeware, even if is not something I do not like or need. IT IS VERY GRACIOUS OF YOU TO DO THIS, so all you yahoos who are complain - either use it or don't - your choice, but please stop complaining.

Hello, all.
Really, what is wrong w/ some people?
Yes, Paragon's programs tend to be a little on the large size.
So what?
I have 1 1 terabyte HDD, 1 500 gigabyte, & 1 610 gigabyte HDD.
How could it possibly matter what size the program is?
Yes, I know that 'small' programs are 'better'.
Irrelevant.
The 'net access thing is relevant, but *not* the 'size' thing.
IF Paragon chooses to put both 32-bit & 64-bit versions in the download,
so what?
Its more convenient, at least for those w/ broadband.
[Disclaimer; 'broadband' not available in all locations.]
Tough.
[Take it up w/ *your* "government representatives", its their fault.]
Really, are some of you people 'clowns'?
Are you going to destroy a perfectly good HDD,
because you're too lame to clean it?
Do you know that HDDs, like all other material devices,
consume valuable resources?
Resources that can NEVER be replaced?
Really?
Are you that LAME?
Maybe you need to learn how to use a sledge hammer, drill press, angle grinder, & a blow torch, for more CONSTRUCTIVE purposes.
["Blow torch"? Do you know what that is? Did you mean oxy-gas torch?]
If you have an old computer, or just a HDD,
that you no longer need/want,
LEARN HOW to clean it.
PLEASE!
They are any number of schools and organizations that could use it,
*IF* you would only PROPERLY clean, & donate it.
Some one else can get on the 'soap box',
'cause I'm getting off now.

Have a GREAT day, neighbors!

#8 Thank you for the links, I had not read them before. Reading them, Gutmann is acknowledging that modern disks cannot be reliably read, even using STMs "Scanning Tunneling (electron) Microscopes" which are expensive even for Universities, when data is overwritten.

So this software and any well-implemented overwriter does indeed work.

Incidentally, has anyone even considered the difficulty in trying to reconstruct "data" from analyzing STM images from TERABYTE drives? The time and cost would be utterly unrealistic, even if they could be reliably read - Which the article says they cannot, due to false positives in apportioning ones and zeros to the "levels" recovered.

Even taking a hammer to a drive only damages the data a little, making it more expensive to recover the data. Not something most people could do in the home, but perfectly possible for a company to recover for a fee. Thermite is often suggested, but is somewhat difficult for the average user and you have to consume every bit of the platters, as any remaining fragment could be read by using an STM and other methods.

All this is somewhat improbable, to all intents and purposes these sorts of software do work. By far your greatest risk is actually data "hidden" by Windows System Files, caches, temporary back-ups and the data that was originally written on the disk when the sector was considered unreliable by the drives' electronics and so marked as not useable by it and consequently never overwritten. To overwrite a drive properly, including the sectors marked as bad, you need to use a low-level formatter to overwrite the whole disk in it's entirety. Tools such as SeaTools (Free on Seagate's website) will do it, but all drive manufacturers have some method of low level formatting.

If you are truly concerned and have a security screwdriver that fits, take the platters out and simply rub them on a sheet of fine sandpaper until you have a nice shiny surface.

In my previous comment #8 I mentioned the following article:-
http://www.cs.auckland.ac.nz/~pgut001/pubs/secure_del.html

However, it is highly technical and somewhat daunting but if you go to the end of the article he has Recommendations, for Windows he recommends Eraser (http://eraser.heidi.ie/) and if you want to do it via hardware DiskStroyer (http://www.diskstroyer.com/Home.html )

I downloaded and installed today's offering; for such a huge download I found the interface appalling, I was never sure when it was going to start to erase my hard drive, not something I wanted to do I just wanted to erase the free space but could find no such option, nor could I find any help file.

It is far too dangerous a piece of software to not feel in control, I deleted it immediately from my system!

If you're concerned about data being recovered from a computer or drive you're selling, something like this will work fine.

If, however, you have concerns about the government recovering data from your machine, physical destruction is the ONLY thing that will work.

Take a sledgehammer to the thing, break it into little pieces.

The wiping software does not exist that the Feds can't recover from.

I would consider purchasing a product from paragon if the company were not so stingy. really now: you pretend you are giving away a product worth $39 when in fact it is worth less than half that, simply because the WinPE module is missing. I would sooner burn the money literally than give it to Paragon. I have spent >$300 in the past several years on products from companies that allowed me to test the WinPE module

What I do when is time to trow out the old disks, just drill few holes and that is it. There is no way anyone or anything to recover anything and it only took me 2 minutes to do it, problem solved.
This software will run for hours and hours and I still do not feel secure after it ran.

Why are people so concerned about the size? If 116MB is that critical to them then they need to erase some programs or useless data OR they are about to get a new computer. In either case they really do need a program like this (or this one in particular).

They could also use a migration tool to transfer all their data onto a removable hard drive and use this program to wipe "selected" data, files, or partitions on their current computer.

Anyway you look at it, complaining about 116MB (.116 of a gigabyte) is stupid. If you have a serious question - ask it, if you like the program - download it, if you don't like the program or have no need for it - just move on.

This developer's software and its GOATD offers have generally been appreciated here. But this developer has frequently been told that -- as it very well knows -- not everyone enjoys high-speed Internet connections nor even, in many parts of GAOTD's worldwide reach, cheap, cost-effective Internet connectivity.

Paragon has been repeatedly reminded of this blindingly obvious fact because of the way it repeatedly comes on here with monumental GAOTD downloads whose size arises solely because 50% of those downloads are not needed / not required by the user.

The establishment of separate download links for x32 and x64 versions of its programs is not rocket science and yet here it is again today with an idiotically large download for a program it has the nerve to describe as 'compact.'

Bottom line: either Paragon doesn't know enough about computing to be able to separate out system downloads (in which case, I'd best keep my own computer's system well away from it) or Paragon does know a great deal about computing, but can't be bothered to accommodate the not unreasonable concerns of people here who are actually its very own prospective customers.

Thanks then, GAOTD. But no thanks: if Paragon can't be bothered about how it offers its software, then I can't be bothered about evaluating that software -- a reaction I doubt is unique, for in answer to Giovanni's musings at post #9, yes: there is a reason why this developer isn't getting the kind of adulatory reception here which you seem to think it deserves. . .

Does this erase the disk that it is stored on? Does it erase itself? In other words, if you download this program onto computer A will it erase the disk on computer A or do you use the program on computer A to erase the disks on computers B, C, or D etc.?

Cam you store this on a USB and use it to clean several other computer (I happen to have sitting around the house)?

every time a program of this type is offered the usual amount of ignorance and disinformation appears.

"wiping" applications fall into the "security" category and as such they must must be released as "open source". if they are not then they cannot be "trusted". they are unsafe and dangerous.

"flash" based "discs" cannot be "wiped". the only way to destroy all information it to destroy the "disc" the old fashioned way.

A lot of concern for the 116 MB download here; someone noted it contains both 32- and 64-bit versions, and the reason for omission of the WinPE is noted. But, "you can create and use Linux/DOS-based Recovery media with built-in Recovery Media Builder" - a boot CD ISO is included, and 116 MB should not be a surprise.

26% THUMBS UP only? Must be a JOKE!

Supports the latest HDD standards (Advanced Format Drive), 2TB+ and non-512B sector size drives, as well as 10 different disk sanitization methods. Must have tool especially for those who often buy & sell their PCs/Laptops and don't like the idea that somebody may have access to their sensitive files using data recovery software.
The big downside I can see is the size of this tool (116 MB is simply too big for a wipe disk).

BEST FREE ALTERNATIVES

* Puran Wipe Disk (==> My Personal First Choice)
Amazing FREE APP, which is part of the excellent PC tuneup utility "Puran Utilities", designed to completely wipe out everything on your HD including the file system and the free space, so that no data can be recovered afterwards using any recovery data software out there. It can erase multiple disks with one mouse click using 1 pass, 3 pass and 7 pass deletion.

http://www.puransoftware.com/Wipe-Disk.html

* Darik's Boot and Nuke (==> My Personal First Choice but definitely NOT for noobs)
Great Open Source tool running from a bootable disc and very suitable for sanitizing more than a single drive for bulk or emergency data destruction, since it can automatically erase all found partitions.
In fact, if you type "autonuke" at the prompt, this software erase ALL DRIVES without confirmation.

http://www.dban.org

* HDD Erase
http://cmrr.ucsd.edu/people/Hughes/SecureErase.shtml

* Parted Magic
Best Linux bootable CD environments for partitioning and erasing hard drives. Great tool especially suitable for wiping out SSD drives.

http://partedmagic.com
http://www.corsair.com/applicationnote/secure-erase

* Disk Cleaner Free
Fantastic FREE system optimization tool which can scan and detect all those junk files usually missed by other similar utilities out there, keeping you PC error-free and as fast as brand-new.
Can clean all hard drives of your computer, flash-memories as well as USB flash drives, with the ability to completely wipe out the whole HD (including separate partitions) for good, using DOD, NSA, Guttmann, and GOST algorithms.

http://www.disk-cleaner.net

To completely erase individual files and folders, rather than an entire HD:

* Portable Files Terminator
Great FREE & PORTABLE Italian app designed to completely delete for good any sensitive data stored in your PC, by using the following 8 shredding methods:

One pass Pseudorandom
British HMG IS5
Two pass Russian GOST P50739-95
Three pass US DoD 5220.22M
Seven pass German VSITR
Canadian RCPM TSSIT OPS-II
Bruce Schneier
35-pass Peter Gutmann

http://elefantsoftware.weebly.com/files-terminator.html

* (Portable) Eraser
http://eraser.heidi.ie

Now, not many people out there know that formatting an HD is NOT the most secure way to remove files and folders from thier computer, since the process may often leave behind a lot of traces...

But hey...this is not true for GIOVANNI ==> LOL ==> How about you dudes?

* HDD Low Level Format Tool (==> Can even quickly wipe partitions and MBR data with ease)

This FREE GEM is a must have tool to use in case you experience constant data corruption, virus intrusion within the MBR or bad sectors in your HDs.
HDD Low Level Format Tool re-initializes the hard drive to its original FACTORY CONFIGURATION (Yes, you heard me right, dudes!!) by writing a zero byte to its each and every location on the disk.
This fully and irreversibly erases all data (if present) from your disk. Low Level Formatting also hides the bad sectors in order to create a clean and error-free surface for your data.

http://hddguru.com/software/HDD-LLF-Low-Level-Format-Tool

Please note that you can NOT use this magic FREE TOOL to format (and wipe) your disk if you run it from the same disk, as it needs to run while the disk is not in use by your OS.
So if you want to use this tool to format your C (Windows) partition, you will need to use a live CD or DVD with a WinPE or LiveXP or Live7 on it. In this case, to safely format or wipe your C (Windows) partition, just use the freeware Live CD MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition.

Enjoy!!

I was somewhat surprised to see on their website that the Gutmann Method of disk wiping was still included, the reason being that apparently it is ineffective of modern drives. He wrote about it in the following article:-
http://www.cs.auckland.ac.nz/~pgut001/pubs/secure_del.html

Apparently new discs need different methods because of the density levels, an interesting discussion can be found at the following link:-

http://www.nber.org/sys-admin/overwritten-data-guttman.html

It is so important that when you discard an old computer and its hard drive that it is worth taking some effort of ensuring that you are using the most effective method of erasure. And when you have erased data that it is tested with a decent recovery program to be sure.

I know my opinion will not be popular but I don't see this publisher as being any different than Ashampoo. Both of them offer programs that you can download and install here. But if you go to their site you can't find these offerings. They only exists here.

While Paragon's offering are good, solid programs that perform well. I think the programs are way to large for the functions they perform and this one is no exception. 116 MB is way too large for a disk wipe. Check this link for a free and portable alternative...

http://www.diskwipe.org/

Thank you GOTD team for all of your great work but I will have to pass on this one. See you all tomorrow.
