Yes there are many free-form notekeepers.. but I dont know folks, do others have automatic clip-board capture??

So then I can automatically capture clipboard snippets AS WELL AS consciously putting in notes purposefully??
With the one app?

Seems to me that is a genius combination of TWO different utilities, for which I am using two separate programs.. and I can see a 1+1=3 bonus potential here.

Ummm.. if this is nothing new, I hope you good folk will let me know! :)

It's always a good idea to check out the later comments. These are the ones that have really checked out a program and I can usually trust their judgement. I'll be keeping notefrog for now to see if it's useful.

This might just be the perfect notebook for creative minds.

While I can quite understand that most folks don't need an application like this, and many would be baffled by its unusual "4-dimensional" approach, it's EXACTLY what is needed by inventors, philosophers and crazy artistic types:

Thousands of free-form, unstructured notes that can be
 - swiftly searched, in a simple OR complex manner

 - categorized by adding custom tags ANYwhere in a body of text ***** (... thus enabling a single concept to be easily linked to various different categories where it might also be relevant - an essential feature for brainstorming; capturing ideas in their spontaneous order and organizing in logical order later. This alone makes it a keeper!)

 - grouped and regrouped as the Muse dictates
 - illustrated with images
 - highlighted with rich text formatting
 - selectively password protected
 - captured via the clipboard automatically or manually
 - imported and exported in any textual format
 - arranged into "stacks", just like you would do with bits of paper
- filtered to provide a concise overview of related topics or keep track of a specific train of thought
 - and more... see their quicktour, support and faq:
http://notefrog.com/indexgo.html
http://notefrog.com/nf_support.html
http://notefrog.com/nf_faq.html

Sure it could do with some improvements, especially on the aesthetic side, but the functionality of this light-weight program (roughly a tenth of EverNote's size, for example) compensates for its shortcomings.

If it still operates at the same impressive speed after I've imported all my notes, NoteFrog will earn itself a recommendation on my "Resources"-page...

Thanks, developers & GAOTD!

Okay, I closed NoteFrog and was going to uninstall it when I hesitated and decided to try reopening it. When you enter the registration code you have to CLOSE the program and REOPEN it - then you can create new stacks in it.

It appears that this IS the professional version that is given away here, not the freebie personal edition.

Apologies to HTConsulting for my having jumped the gun on previous review I sent in, I am looking further at the program. Will be putting up a formal review on Techno Dragon in a few days.

Not worth the download.

I tried to register it, and the registration code seems to work, but when I try to add a new stack it refuses to let me, telling me that additional stacks can only be added in the professional version. I would not mind if it was limited to 3 or 5 stacks, but no additional stacks? What good is it to have the room taken up on the hard drive and not be able to use the feature? I am going to look into uninstalling this (which sounds from above like it'll be difficult) and look into the suggested free and Open Source alternatives.

Thanks GAOTD, but no thanks HTConsulting, if you are going to offer a demo of your program don't offer the already free version. Give us something those of us that review these things can actually review.

::disappointed because I really had a use for a program like this too and was so excited at potential of it:::

Thumbs Down from me - first time I have given any program here a thumbs down too. :-/

#37 - NotePad is actually quite usable as a PIM... just dump whatever you want in a text file and then use CNTRL-F (Find) to search on text strings. And if you're using a third-party search utility like Copernic or Google Desktop Search... better yet.

THis one is CrapWare - avoid.

Great alternative is TotalText - already mentioned here. TotalText is pretty similar to InfoSelect if anyone is familiar with that oldie but goodie..

Very poor, amateur interface.

Some things not allowed because this is only the standard addition--NOT the professional one.

Import/Export, but no synchronization between computers.

Thumbs down--I'll stick with EverNote!

This seems to be a family member of the original Personal Information Managers (PIMs) begun by the phenomenal Lotus Agenda (still downloadable free, DOS) and Info Select. IS (still available, not free, but now overblown) searches just as NoteFrog does, keystroke by keystroke.

Agenda is still the 'sine qua non' of PIMS: not only does it search for words but it searches for MEANINGS OF WORDS: 'sent it to brother' is recognised as something for Frank, your brother. 'Did it last night' is classified as Wednesday pm. Superb.

Agenda's possible successor is Chandler. A long-developed version 1.0 is at www.chandlerproject.org (free).
