#163, Henry Coppola, So, you made an insulting - and wrong - assumption about the company without even trying to contact it first, got a standard email that was NOT rude at all explaining how you must have failed to follow the instructions - and STILL offering you a discount on the purchase of the software (which, per GOTD own terms and conditions, you were not even entitled at all).

Nobody called you an idiot, you just felt like one and proceeded to project that feeling onto the person talking to you.

While the handful of others who made the same mistake of not getting a serial number were quick to recognize that it was their own fault and jumped on the offer, you instead called me an 'arrogant SOB' (literally). If anybody has been rude and insulting from the very begining, it's you.

The fact that you are a veteran of GOTD doesn't mean that reading the instructions doesn't apply to you. Each GOTD offering, beeing from different software vendors, has their own unique set of rules. Please pay more attention next time, don't be so quick at jumping to conclusions (at the very least *try* to contact the company first!), assume responsability for your own mistakes, and stop calling other people names when they point them out to you.

I installed and registered the program on August 4, per the supplied instructions. Two days ago, I got a message that the trial period was expiring. The uninstall program asked for comments. I mentioned that using GOTD and then expiring the program told me all I needed to know about the program and the company. I received a very rude email from the company basically calling me an idiot.
Even if I did not follow the registration protocol exactly, I do not believe this is any way to treat a customer. I am
a veteran of GOTD and have not had this problem previously. I did not ask for anything, as I found the program ony marginally useful.

The DPI settings issue will be fixed as soon as a solution is found (working on it), but you can thank Microsoft for making Windows actually lie to applications about current screen resolution for this.

Not exactly Nexus Ultimate's fault if it can't trust what Windows is telling it, is it? :-)

As for those complaining about Nexus reverting to trial, this will only happen if

a) you violated the terms and conditions of this promotion by sharing your serial, which instantly blacklists it, or

b) something changed the executable (a virus, for instance) or did something that caused the software protection mechanism to kick in (you should also get a red warning dialog in that case).

Either way, please contact Winstep support and provide your Nexus Ultimate serial number. Such cases will be taken up on a case-by-case basis.

Thanks,

DPI settings for many of us are needed so when offered a choice between seeing our screens easily and using this software we'll be forced to pick the former. Sorry.

This was one of the best downloads made available on this site for some time. I love the appearance and usability of the dock; however, I did find it difficult to add dock links to common programs (eg. internet) . I had to located program links in my c:\\ProgramFiles. Would it be possible to simplify the 'Find a Program' search to automatically list programs available on the computer?

Well, I have tried downloading this a few times now and running the install file, but I'm still getting the same error message.."Failed to connect..please try again later"!

I REALLY wanted to have this little gem on my PC, but it just doesn't seem to want to install! I have checked everything on my end and all is working as they should with nothing blocking the setup program from connecting to the net, yet it still won't install!

I hope the guys at WinStep offer this again some time, so I can get a chance to test-drive it..that is, of course, if it will let me install it at a later date!

Oh well..guess that's it for me regarding this offering..sure looked and sounded like a "keeper".

This should be my last entry here before the Nexus Ultimate promotion at GOTD ends. My thanks to everyone for their reception of Nexus Ultimate, useful feedback and suggestions, and all the nice words and thumbs up. No program is perfect, but we do our best. :-)

Quite obvious there is still some work to do, but then, development of Winstep applications never stops.

Now the replies:

#137, Larry Hines and all those who want to upgrade to Winstep Xtreme at the discounted price - you MUST register Nexus Ultimate first. Once you do, a button named 'Upgrade to Xtreme' appears in the About tab of Nexus Ultimate Preferences.

#124, Bob B - "There is no corresponding wallpaper to go with it"

If it is a native Winstep themes, there is a wallpaper, but you must manually apply it by changing the combo box at the top left corner of the Themes tab from 'Themes' to 'Wallpaper'.

"When I drop a document into a dock I’m then left with the original shortcut on the desktop."

Use the CTRL (copy) and SHIFT (move) key modifiers while dragging.

#125, Paul Ward - You have Proxy-related settings in the Advanced tab of Nexus Ultimate Preferences.

#131, Terry - Change your Windows DPI settings to 100%.

#136, Alok - "It can display clock in the dock, but no module for “Date”. How to add date?"

A calendar module will be added in a future version.

"I cannot get system tray icons to show up in the dock"

Right click on any dock item -> Insert New Dock Item -> Show System Tray in this Dock.

You can also do this from the Dock Properties dialog for that dock.

#139, Lenrocexe - Thanks for all the useful feedback.

"providing a option to disable it globally (not per dock/shelf) would be great"

You can globally disable the bouncing arrow in Preferences -> Advanced tab -> Misc.Advanced -> clear 'Show Bouncing arrow...'

"The recent files tab does not automatically update itself in the workshelf"

It will if you switch to another tab and back. Anyway, it should indeed update itself automatically.

"You have to click to open context menu’s (Right click menu’s)"

Preferences -> Advanced -> Misc.Advanced -> Open sub-menus on mouseover.

#141, JL - Thanks for the thumbs up! :-)

#145, Troy - Please contact Winstep support to get to the bottom of that.

Thanks everybody, and, above all, HAVE FUN playing with Nexus Ultimate and Winstep Xtreme. Best regards,

Jorge Coelho

I'm running XP3 2.8GHz P4 w/ 2gig memory. This application starts to lock my system. It fights with Process Lasso (Process Lasso keeps stopping it, even when I put it into gaming mode to allocate more resources). Very nice design, looks great, would probably be useful, but with the conflict with Process Lasso, destined to be uninstalled and sent to the recycle bin (unless someone has a solution) as Process Lasso is an absolute gem and will always have a place on my system - JEB

It is so nice to see the developers interested in what people say about their program. I'm sure that GOTD started with the hopes that programmers would use this as a learning tool and also customer relations but sadly, most of them don't bother to interact with us. It's their loss but I bet they don't see it that way.

So, Bravo to Winstep!!

I like this program (I will give rocketdock a try though) and it definately is better than the free version. I did have to uninstall the free version though because when trying to install this over it I got a msg that a dock was already in place even though it wasn't running at the time, and so it caused some problems because it was putting everything on top of each other. But after uninstalling and then re-installing this again everything seems to work ok.

Well, Winstep - looks like you have a winner here at GOTD, and earned some kudos along the way by participating all day - something developers rarely do here - and of course, a few detractors too, along with the usual mix of "I don't see the purpose" and "I use a better/smaller/faster/cheaper product" comments.

But all in all, a very good response, a lot of comments, and even users helping each other already.... I think I speak for a lot of us when I say that your presence, and your ACTIVE participation, impressed us every bit as much as your great software package. I'm still exploring all the options, configurations and tweaks available - and I see no end in sight yet. This really is a great little package; it delivers a lot of functionality (despite what the nay-sayers wrote) without a lot of system resources being stressed, and it delivers the kind of imaginative approach that gives the end user a great deal of control to adapt it for our own needs, instead of requiring us to fit our habits into narrow parameters and limited choices. Well done!

And for anyone who STILL can't see the advantage of programs like this over the tired old desktop/icon/menu system we've all grown used to, use your imagination, because that's the only limiting factor with Nexus - you can take those same icons and links and group them, shuffle them, ORGANIZE them to fit YOUR needs, not just clutter up your desktop with another set of pretty foo-foos. That's the advantage here - you can quickly and easily store and recall with no effort, you can set things up so things you access more often are right in front of you and rarely accessed things are not, and you can do all that AND free up your desktop environment! I know it's not for everybody, but for geeks like me, who often work on 8 or 10 different projects at once, it's extremely handy. Of course, if all you do is browse, email and surf there's little advantage - but what do you need to do that besides a desktop and a few icons anyway?

But for the rest of us - those who tackle projects with multiple sources and data types, scads of info of different types using programs that go beyond your normal surf 'n turf activities and also come across dozens of related and unrelated links we want to save every day, - this is a VERY powerful tool, and I for one am really glad I popped in to GOTD today and found it! I can't wait to really dive in and try out some configs I've envisioned, because despite the odd glitches others refer to, this is a very stable and flexible release, and it's going to be more than helpful for this old geek (I've been working with computers for over 30 years now) and my insatiable curiosity, along with getting control of all the items I'm currently juggling in a cluttered mess across my own desktop and the disarray of folders I've created to try and stem the tide.

Again, Well Done! and Thank You, Winstep and GOTD, for bringing this here - it's a 5 out of 5 for me, and I think it's only going to get better, and better....

John

Tested this on a WinXP pro x64 machine.
Nexus Ultimate really is awesome but there are a few points I found that where worth mentioning. Though I may have overlooked some settings that might make some cons invalid.
I focused more on the cons than the pros because I believe those have been covered already. :)

Pros

-Highlighting a dock icon forcefully gets window focus but nicely returns the focus to the previous window when cursor is moved away from the dock.

Cons / Suggestions

-When the Dock and Shelf Properties windows gain focus a very annoying arrow appears on screen, indicating what would be affected.
The arrow stays on screen for 5 seconds which is 4 seconds too long, providing a option to disable it globally (not per dock/shelf) would be great.
It is especially annoying and noticeable when changing the settings under the Position tab from the Shelf Properties window.

-There are many sliders available to customize various settings (under the appearance tab in the Dock Properties window for example) but it is hard to finetune those with a large range (ex. the size for the dock icons).
Would be great if the value could also be changed by ways of manually typing it in a textfield.

-Hiding the shelf by choosing the "Toggle Shelf" option from the tray icon does not return the space it occupied, which renders other applications unable to use that space when maximized.

-The recent files tab does not automatically update itself in the workshelf.

-I'm unable to get rid of the confirmation windows when exiting the program and deleting a dock. There should be an option to turn these kind of messages off, they get annoying after a while.

-You have to click to open context menu's (Right click menu's), hovering over them for a second should suffice to open them just like the windows start menu.

Bugs

-The icons stay dark when you try to drag them off the dock when the "Lock Icons" option is enabled.

-Changing language does not take into account the tray icon menu. (restarting app fixes this)

-The arrow animation shown when the Shelf Properties window is active does not work well with the mouseover events on the recent items tab in the workshelf (even when there is no animation specified). The arrow animation slows down and eats cpu.

---

For what I've seen, this program offers a near complete package of what a docking program could offer and the price looks just right for this. Definitely worth a try if you're interested.

Program looks good as I have not downloaded it to try because I use a Freeware dock Launcher that I am very happy with called 8start. 8start also has differnt skins available and allows you to create categorys and totally customise what programs you would like to have available for quick Launch. It also includes a Reminder alarm and note pad for storage of notes and snippets built into the program. Oh and also it will allow you to save any Favorite websites in another Category so you can quick launch right to them in one click!

8start launch menu if you care to take a look it's Freeware and does a great job!

I like this software, but like so many programs
it seems a little US-centric. For instance, the
weather can be changed for the country, but
as far as I can see, not the way the weather is
measured : I'm in Australia where we do weather in
metrics/celsius, but I can only seem to get the report
in farenheit.

Not a big problem, for sure, but if it's going to try
to be international, be international, not half way there.

Thanks GOTD and Winstep.

I have been exploring the application's functions. and I really like it. The Sub Docks for additional programs is a big selling point for me. I have one quibble and one item for the wish list. For the quibble, please add an up one level function and arrow for the Nexus Explorer. When I re-open the explorer to look for my next application to load, it is on the last one opened, which is good. However, it is mildly irritating to have to go into the file tree to go up one level to go to another application in the same folder.

My wish is to have independent control of the size of the icons in the sub-docks. Even if all of the sub docks had to have the same size icons, that would be fine. I just would like the ability to make the main dock icons bigger than the sub doc icons. ty.

I have downloaded the program a couple of times, reading the instructions closely, opening the file as the Administrator, everything moves nicely until I receive an error message; The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. However, the next box to appear is entitled "Successfully activated", with a message; " To install and activate your free copy follow the instructions in the Readme txt. file".
After attempt number three, I used the address in the Readme file, and go to this company's website. I come upon a company order form where I entered my name and email address and used Checkout as instructed. A new window opens and congratulates me on securing the program through GOTD, one major difference; I see that it is registered to me personally. I close out that window in order to give the program a try, but I can't find any trace of the program following this operation! And yes, I attempted this a few more times with the exact same results. Since I have some profit based work to do, I’ll not try this again until very later in my day! Slan

Installed fine on WinXP Pro SP3. Running now in a LUA desktop. Very pretty! Seems to function well, no glitches, nice animations.

Compatible with previous GotD's Aston2 components (desktop and menu); that's nice to see.

Don't like the sounds (but I'm certain that's configurable).

It just surprised me by speaking the top-of-the-hour time to me! Sometimes software has to exist just to be fun!

This may or may not fit my workflow. At the same time, I think I'll suggest this to a friend.

What's the GotD suggestion regarding posting comments many days after the giveaway? This is one of many such things which are better evaluated after more time in use than just one day. Are late comments allowed? encouraged? discouraged? Do people come back later to read them?

Looks good, works well. I have used rocketdock the free alternative for a few years but this dock has more bells and whistles. It is very customisable which is nice. However I am behind a proxy and can't seem to get the application to accept the proxy settings, may just be some configuration issue on my side.

I'm working my way through this and, on the whole, it seems pretty good.
I have a couple of points/questions to raise.
Does the theme selection only apply to the style and colour of the docks/shelves because that's all I get. There is no corresponding wallpaper to go with it.
When I drop a document into a dock I'm then left with the original shortcut on the desktop. I deleted this (as I thought the one in the dock was sufficient) but then the doc in the dock won't open.
Are we supposed to load the docks and shelves with all our stuff but still retain the desktop apps as well??.......Help....!!

Installed, registered and ran perfectly on Win 7 Pro x64. It is proving difficult to set up. I would like to be able to create tabs and drag the content I want into those tabs to gather all of my project material together, and then assign an icon to each item. This is proving to be a very tedious manual process. Also when I accidentally create something that I don't want, I have yet to figure out how to get rid of it. I disabled the sounds and animations because I don't like them. I will need more time with this program to decide whether to keep it.

#110, Phaedron "we often set the DPI at something other than 100%. Does this mean that Nexus will be inappropriate for us with big screens set to accommodate?"

Unfortunately I will have to say that yes, for the moment, and depending on how high you have set your DPI settings.

I've obviously been looking into this, the problem is that I haven't yet been able to find an API that isn't 'lied to' by Windows regarding the current screeen resolution when using high DPI settings.

Microsoft really seems to enjoy making life more and more difficult for developers with each Windows version. :-(

This said, I'm persistent and I'll figure it out, hopefuly still before the next release. :-)

Ok, guys, when you have technical questions about the program, please send them to Winstep support or post them on the Winstep forums. It is very difficult to answer them here as posts pile up while waiting for moderation.

So here goes in a lump:

#68 farook: "“Licence Key Is Valid For All Upgrades Released Until August 5 2010″.. what does this mean??"

Means that the license key you got will work with this particular version FOREVER, but will only work with any *new* upgrades that are released between today and tomorrow. The extra day was left as a fail-safe measure, as, per GAOTD terms and conditions, this version does not offer free upgrades to future versions.

"my IE is opening only half screen even if i maximize it"

Set your Windows DPI settings to 100%. If they are not 100%, Windows will 'lie' to applications about the current screen size, which interferes with Winstep Xtreme's ability to reserve screen space and prevent maximized windows from overlapping docks and the Shelf.

#73, Celt42 - "But a problem began to emerge – icons would suddenly become generic and stop working, seemingly at random"

You should have indeed brought it up with Winstep. That is a bug in Stardock's Iconpackager! Please read the troubleshooting section of the Winstep Xtreme FAQ in the Winstep web site for a fix provided by Stardock.

#80, Flissa - "I can see the themes I’ve downloaded in the theme folder in my documents but they will not appear in the themes tab and I can’t apply them."

Where did you download the themes from? Are they native Winstep themes or 3rd party dock themes? Where are you trying to apply the themes from, the Dock Properties dialog (i.e.; just for that dock) or from the themes tab of Nexus Ultimate Preferences?

It's better to handle this via Winstep support or the Winstep forums as the solution will obviously require a couple of answers from you. :-)

#84, Chrys - "I have been trying to figure out how to move icons around in the tabs in the shelf. I have a Desktop tab"

You can only position Shelf icons in *regular* (i.e. non-folder and non-virtual folder) Shelf tabs, sorry. On folder and virtual folder tabs, icons are always sorted alphabetically (folders and virtual shell items first).

#85, Keith - "Sits there saying “Please wait… Initializing NeXuS Ultimate.” That’s it… 10 minutes. Same thing on three different PCs"

And the common denominator between those 3 PCs is... your security software, which I'm willing to bet that it is the same for all 3 PCs and is preventing Nexus from starting properly. I've had a user previously reporting that the HP protect tools security suite did this - uninstalling it and replacing it with another security suite solved the problem.

Disregard the question in my previous comment. You can change the program language in the "About" tab of Preferences. I would rather have uninstalled than endured the Norwegian translation (it is THAT bad).
