Its a shame I know this is over as a giveaway but the owners have since released an upgrade to this version 2 days after release of this and with some of the improvements that were offered by members here but you have to pay for the bug fixes and upgrades.

Yesterday I posted two comments in addition to #47 and #73 that did not appear here. I said:

Pfffff..... I finally figured it out. You have to click on the image to get to see a menu with the Auto Fill/Center/Apply to All buttons. If only it would have been shown permanently or if only this was explained somewhere. It would have saved me an hour to find this.

The absence of any way to specify an interval for the auto-play is a major downside that should be fixed ASAP. I think a Re-Run with some of the suggestions from today implemented would be in order sometime soon.

I also reported that the screensaver doesn't work in my XP Pro SP2 machine. It stays stuck at 0%.

Apparently my suggestion for adding the possibility to set the interval that I had already mentioned in #73 has been picked up by the developers. Maybe they DID get to see my last unposted comments. For me that single feature makes the difference between an almost usable and a really usable piece of software. It would seem only fair that the ideas suggested by GOTD users will be made available to them. So either send me a registration code (GOTD people will know my e-mail address) or make it available to us all through a Re-Run.

BEWARE - DO NOT UPDATE THIS GOTD VERSION!!! I performed a 'minor' update today from version 2.3.1 to 2.3.3 and it over-wrote the entire installaiton and left me with a 15-day trial version. When I asked the company why this happened, they replied...

"I think you should read the readme.txt in FlipBookMaker.zip, the GOTD version is no free to upgrade."

Consider yourself warned.

I've played around a little with Flip Book Maker on my XP Pro SP3 and would like to share my opinion.

It is a very useful and impressive piece of software, I like it very much and am going to run it a lot.

Nevertheless, I also found a flaw: the main window and Style/Effect/Preview pans cannot be either moved or resized within the main window. As a result, on my 1152x864 display the right and bottom edges are not seen at all, so I can e.g. turn pages back only by clicking on the handles below the preview. Neither I see the Advanced/Customize buttons in the bottom nor I can minimize the main window to the taskbar. Moving the border handle between the Style/Effect and Preview pans does not help. Please have a look @the screenshot

Only when I increase the screen resolution up to 1280x960 pixels, I can get all the control handles. I cannot be very happy with this workaround as I am visually impared a bit and have to use large icons and texts on the screen.

A side note: I believe the developer would better publish a pure bug-fix version free for those who hold a legally registered product, something like "Ncesoft Flip Book Maker 2.3.1.001", and the new advanced non-free version "Ncesoft Flip Book Maker 2.3.2" with all the new features and known bugs fixed. This way the legal customers would not have to pay twice for the same product if they are not interested in the added features but only want the existing ones working as expected.

With all that said, the overall impression is very good. Thank you, Ncesoft and GAOTD!

Installed and Reg. on XP SP3 without hassle.
Easy learning curve and with a bit of experiment produces excellant results. Produced an 182 page PDF...during Publish fase the timer froze on 97 and +/- 30 secs later produced the requested .exe file. The same happened when I opened the .exe...the loading timer ran and stopped on 97 and later opened the program 100%. If you use the magnification button on the open pages and the content doesn't fit, you can hold down left click and adjust the page.
This application has tons of potential for the user and is a sound basis for further development.
Suggest you make a full PDF operation manual available as a download.
Thanks NceSoft and GOTD...2 Thumbs up!!!

I just download the new version2.3.3 form ncesoft website
http://www.ncesoft.com/download/ncesoft-flip-book-maker.exe

I saw what's new in Ncesoft Flip Book Maker 2.3.3:
1.Added the function of setting auto playing time
2.Solved the problem of screen center
3.Fixed the bug of loading Background Form, Page Form, Cover Form

Disappointment is the upgrade is not free.

I downloaded this program.
At first I could not figure out the register problem, so emailed the Ncesoft support team who quickly replied with screenshots and advice.

The program works, I have played with it, love it and would recommend it to anyone. I would like to also add that the respone from the Ncesoft support team was wonderfully quick and efficient (10 stars out of 10 for their service).

Thanks GOTD - another great product !

Downloaded and installed fine, but when run for the first time it displays a splash screen with "Loading, please wait..." for a long time. I finally gave up and closed the program. I uninstalled, just in case I did something wrong (I started it prior to activation), and I reinstalled making sure that I activated prior to running it and I got the same issue. I am running Windows XP SP3.

Since most of my images are in landscape mode, a setting for the page to also be landscape would be nice. Currently, there is a lot of wasted space below and above the images. I could crop my images to fit, but I composed most of them with the assumption that they would be wider than tall.
I also couldn't run the screen saver file even though I can run screen savers outputted from other files.
The pdf conversion had rough looking text. I don't know if it was my test file or not, but the pdf looked fine before conversion.
Overall, I like it and will use it to make some photo albums for family. But I don't think I will use the pdf conversion, because I don't like all of the space around the page. That is fun for scrapbooks but not ebooks.
I use Win 7 64 bit.

This installed without a problem on my Win 7 64 machine. I contacted support because I thought it wasn't activating successfully, but apparently, if you see "Giveawayoftheday" on the registration window that pops up, it HAS successfully registered already, and we can just X out of that and use the program.

Many thanks, GOTD, for a neat, fun little program!

Downloaded and installed fine on XP Home Edition. This is an easy to use piece of software and it appears to be a very useful tool. I have not made any large files only a 3 picture flip book and I think that it is a great software offer.
I can not understand why people fuss and complain about something that is given to them free. There are choices you know install or pass it up. No one is forcing anyone to use the program.

Downloaded, installed and activated fine. When I try to run program and it says "Loading, please wait", then a Microsoft box pops up titled "FlipBookMaker.exe" and says:
FlipBookMaker.exe
FlipBookMaker.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
I close this box and underneath was this Application Error box which said:
Exception EOleSysError in module FlipBookMaker.exe at 00073819.
Class not registered.
I am running Windows XP and I am the administrator.
How do I solve this problem? Anyone ???

Good program. My 6-year-old kids are having great fun making their flip books. Thanks! HELP? Can´t get the music to work - I get a message "There was a problem initializing MCI" and the chosen music doesn't play, although the book itself works just fine as long as I choose to make an .exe file, and not HTML. Any ideas would be appreciated. Cheers.

As Mike (#67) mentioned, at present there is not any in-app or online help, in spite of the online page suggesting to "Consult the Help Document"; otherwise, the list on their Support page that appears to be links doesn't work.

And yes, as Mike said, it leads you on a pretty straight-forward step-by-step process on how to create your desired output item (Flash SWF file, etc.).

Instead, clicking on the start menu item "How to use Ncesoft Flip Book Maker" takes you to some online tutorials and a single FAQ with generic sample code on how to get a flip book working on a web page you might own.

Anyway, I noticed the dearth of help when trying to resolve a small issue when I used it: After selecting and loading in some pictures I proceeded to step 2, select a Style. I choose the "Symmetrical" style (and added the "OldFilm02" effect); then proceed to publish the FlipBook as a SWF file in step 3.

FYI, the "Symmetrical" style looks like a three-ring binder.

It looked pretty good; however, I noticed that after flipping beyond the first page, the remaining pictures (except for the rear "cover" of the "binder") had the "rings" of the "binder" on their outer edges rather than in the middle where they belong. It destroyed the intended effect.

Also, I noticed that the thumbnail mode would not display the first and last pictures, which got assigned to the front and back covers respectively. It seems like they should be included. It could be avoided by a "Add Blank Photo" as the very first and last photo in the collection, but then the front and back covers are blank.

Oh, and here's a tip for "newbies" which works in many applications: when adding several pictures, you can hold down the CTRL key and then single-click on several of them in a row (building a list) before clicking "OK". Otherwise you'd be repeating the Add Photo step over and over.

Thanks for a nice program.

I have Windows 7 (32). No problem in getting the program to run. I tried to create a book using pdf documents. I takes quite awhile for the "book" to be put together. The full screen function didn't work and if you enlarge the pic then you can't read it because you can't scan right to left etc. I couldn't save nor email it as a pdf document. The idea/concept is pretty good but it sure needs a lot of work before marketing.

It is a perfect flip book application, but major cons are...

1. There should be a choice to hide navigation buttons
2. Fix image stretching behavior. Stretching it by one side, only increase the canvas area not the picture.
3. Allow to auto stretch imported images to fill the entire page area
4. Allow adjustable flipping speed

I've now had a chance to play with the software a little. Created a flip book of photos from my 14-month-old granddaughter that I'm going to put on the website for family to see.

Easy to use, some nice templates, and some nice features to the program.

It is definitely designed around creating photo albums rather than text books. I haven't yet played with it for my unpublished book (text). I'll have to do that. But the entire interface draws you into photo books specifically.

@Terry (#6) wrote: "I was disappointed I couldn't flip the page using the mouse pointer on over the page, it is all controlled from ‘tape player’ style controls below the book."

That is incorrect. You can grab the page and whisk your mouse to the left or right to turn pages, or you can grab pages at the top and bottom corners and turn them.

Other comments on here showed a lack of people actually playing around with settings, etc. There are a good number of customizations available.

All in all, it is a nice tool and easy to use. $50 is probably too high of a price point, though.

A fun little program, enjoyed playing with it and can see me wanting to expand it's templates right off the bat. It is a resource hog, and same with the website.
I'm sorry though I can't see spending that much for this program, maybe 20 bucks. The editing functions could be expanded but I do most work on a dedicated program so most are the way I want them before I would even open this program.
Sadly for free I'm very satisfied with it but for pay, with extra work I can do the same with freebies.
I would like to see more development and an option to insert one of my pictures into backgrounds with animations being options to add.
For instance the Little boats buzzing around my own photos.

I want to display a set of photos 1024x768 in size at 100% of that size on the screen but cannot get it to do that. I always get much larger pages in the background and only relatively small photos. I've tried changing every size setting I could find. Also the first photo (cover) displays on the right half and the following in the centre with the last one on the left side (rear cover). This is when you choose 'Full Page' in the Book Advanced Settings. I choose 'Original size' in the Output settings. What am I missing?

I want it to auto-play full screen but there seems to be no way to set the interval. The default is rather fast.

Also when I press the Play button in the Publish section it 'compiles' the Flip Book and then stays stuck at 0%.
I noticed it overwrites files without warning if you use the same name. Not a common behaviour.

Although this works reasonably for PDF's I'm not too thrilled about it for viewing photos. Not automatically at the larger size I want anyway.

#35: "can these be put on DVD? Any program that could convert them to DVDable?"

Everything visible on a Video DVD is mpg2 video, so you'd need a disassembly/conversion app -- there's been a few on GOTD in the past -- or record the Flip Book playing on your desktop as a video file, converting that as needed or importing into a DVD authoring app etc. Some .swf files can hold more-or-less regular video files (like on Youtube) -- this isn't that sort, so I don't imagine you'd have any luck with most video converters.

* * *

#36: "... The downside is that you don’t have any customization options..."

Once you select a template & click the Customize button you can set the background, choose between several Control Button styles + show/not show the Music & Full Screen buttons. You can likewise set Title & Page Text (& color, font etc), use a background for the Navigation Bar, set Cover & Page backgrounds & stretch, use content page, set page size, display area, cover & book paper type, have 3 options for "Scrolling-Zoom In, & a couple of check boxes for Flip Sound.

* * *

#37: "... I already have the lastest Flash Player installed anyway. Why won’t it work? Any Suggestions?"

Check out the Flash installation, version info, & troubleshooting pages at Adobe's site, & check to see if you have more than one version installed by looking in the installed folder on your hdd. Unfortunately running the Flash installer (or uninstaller) doesn't always mean it worked... I had problems with a recent version for example on several Windows installs, with older files left behind -- once I got rid of them install worked like it was supposed to.

* * *

#62: "... I understand that pdf file is, in fact, an image, but it doesnt have to be photo, right?"

A PDF can be any combo of text, vector, &/or rasterized (bitmap type) images, And may/may not be able to be converted depending on what created it & what conversion app you use... the PDF format itself was designed to discourage re-using contents, & AFAIK a perfect conversion app/method doesn't exist. If you have trouble getting a particular PDF into Flip Book Maker you can always try other converters to get a batch of image files [Flip Book Maker imports several formats], take screen shots if it's a reasonable number of pages etc.

* * *

#64: "- the swf file havent opened yet (about 1 hr after downloading)(and no, its not my pc, Q6600 @ 3.01Ghz, 4Gb ram and ATI HD2900XT should be more than enough for any application like that)"

If it helps... Generally Flash Shockwave (.swf) either works or doesn't, depending mostly on the Flash Player being installed/working correctly. It can work on mobile phones, netbooks etc., & while it can use an awful lot of horsepower, that's more a sign of inefficiency than real need [e.g. Flash-based games run just as well for the most part whether they're played on a single, double, or latest quad core setup, AND it'll tend to max out all 3 types of CPUs, slowest or fastest.]

ACTIVATION ISSUES: After much frustration, I couldn't get the program to activate on my WIN7 x64. Figured out the problem, the instructions tell you to run setup.exe as admin. I did this on a limited account. Then when you try to run the app on the limited account, it says it's unregistered. This is because it is installed and registered on the admin account. To get it to work on other accounts on the same machine, you have to go to each account and repeat the activation process. Then you will have a fully functioning copy on each account you need it to be on. Hope this helps anyone having activation issues.

Ncesoft Flip Book Maker is a nice app to make animated greeting cards / albums, especially with the holidays approaching. A nice front end for a couple of the free SWFTools, Ncesoft has added basic image editing along with a selection of customizable templates in a package that can be used for more mundane tasks like biz or simply photo sharing. Output is Flash Shockwave (.swf) that can be saved as is, exported to a self-running executable (.exe) file [the stand-a-lone player from the Shockwave SDK is included], as a screensaver, embedded in a web page, or embedded in an email. The site's FAQ also has the copy/paste code for embedding/inserting in an html page. There is no help file as such -- just a few tutorials on the product site -- but the app's easy enough to figure out you likely won't bother.

Flip Book Maker's setup package includes the v. 10h Flash player, installed to the System32/SysWOW64 [32/64 bit] \ Macromed folder. [Note: Flash10h.ocx (& other versions) are protected -- this isn't something unique to today's GOTD -- & install problems aren't unheard of... Tip: Google/Bing on Cacls if/when you need to delete this or other Flash .ocx files if/when all else fails installing the latest version. Adobe's site has install/uninstall files, installed & latest version info etc.].

This app's program folder takes up ~28MB with 326 files, 38 folders. Output is by default put in a My Documents \ Ncesoft sub-folder. Flip Book Maker itself doesn't add anything to Windows, & I only recorded 3 new registry keys -- Fbm.Info, uninstall, & a user CLSID key for today's GOTD license. Running the GOTD Activate.exe *changes* registry values, so you probably want to run it after installing this GOTD. The Flash install/update part should be no more, no less trouble prone than installing/updating Flash any other time from any other source, & should work the same way -- the same Adobe installer/uninstaller is included that you'd download from Adobe.

All-in-all I think some might balk at the price, but 1) IMHO it's hard to price creative work like the templates, & 2) this is GOTD. ;-) Personally I probably wouldn't look twice at Ncesoft's Flip Book Maker, except it's *That* time of year, and I'm already thinking of very quick Halloween, T/Day, & Xmas projects to email family, & some would probably get a big kick out of stuff I did using this app.

Very impressed - initially registration didn't seem to work but I contacted the developer through their support email address and got a speeds reply explaining that although the registration info appears blank - ones activated it is registered.

It took me just 3 minutes to create an excellent looking flip-book with loads of photos and music and some nice effects.

Some may complain that it lacks highly sophisticated features, but for my purposes this is just what I wanted - something very quick and easy and it does the job.

As instructed, I ran the "SETUP.EXE" and then ran the "ACTIVATE.EXE". A couple of quickly disappearing windows later, it says it has been activated. Is that really all there is to it? No need to enter a key code?

Well, tried it. Have to say I am not happy with it at all.
It says that it can import pdfs. Okay, thats true. I understand that pdf file is, in fact, an image, but it doesnt have to be photo, right? Well, tried to import one of my ebooks (about 400 pages).

- Import button should be named import files, as add photo IS very confusing - not every pdf is made of photos
- Authors probably havent heared about multithreading at all, it got stuck after 35 pages, UI locked down. After about two minutes images were imported. Not very userfriendly, but so far so good.
- Template selection; another UI lockdowns.
- Customize template - browse button when selecting images is nearly invisible
- Folder and image icons were totally broken on win 7 (x64)
- Using high resolution images appears to be impossible (no image shown, just background color)
- Export: Totally bugged
- A lot of "file being used" erros (no, it wasnt opened)
- Very interesting error. "i". Really, just "i", nothing more.
- Whatever type i selected, it always ended like "Filename.swf", have yet to see any exe file.

Sorry, doesnt seem very professional. UI looks good and clean, but thats only first impression. Have to give thumbs down and uninstall.

Downloaded and installed perfectly but when I tried to create flip book from pdf, it stops and says 'pdf file is password protected' for 70 to 80% of my pdf files, which are not password protected!

Can anyone help please?

Downloads; installs and run fine at Win 2000 SP 4.
Have just created my first book.
The user interface seems at bit akward...
Anyway, I'll give it a serious try later

Installed and said it activated but doesn't show registered in help. However, I haven't had the registration popup so good enough.

Works, you have to play around with the settings but does what it says. Couldn't get screensaver to work in fullscreen mode, it hangs up. You have to set autoplay and autoloop while you're creating the screensaver otherwise you just get the cover page.

Import photo button is somewhat confusing as you use this button to import pdfs too.

Cute prog and fun to play around with.

I am trying to Activate the software. It is giving me the following message:

FATAL ERROR: KEY IS INVALID

I've done this numerous times with GAOTD software and have never had a problem, and I did read the readme.txt again to make sure I was doing everything the right way.

I'm on Vista Home Premium 64, SP2. I am using an administrator account. I even tried again by shift-right-clicking on activate.exe and selecting "run as administrator." Same thing three times in a row.

Each time, just to be sure, I re-downloaded the program.

Has anyone encountered this? Can you help?

Says install complete. Says now activated. When I try to run it comes up with an error "FlipBookMaker.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience". Rebooted computer but still get same error. Running XP SP3. Anyone else having this problem? First program I have encountered that would not run on my computer.

Downloaded and installed fine on XP Pro. This is an easy to use piece of software that will output a very nice finished product once the user finds all of the bells and whistles. I love how it is laid out. It is very intuitive, fun, and practical.

It would be very easy to add the flip book to a website as well. Have some fun with this one. Get your creative juices going!
