This worked great on my XP machine but is struggling to not crash with Vista.

That said - we've got it working better after a few tweaks and we've used it religiously for all our web design work over the last 12 months.

#185 Kat, not exactly. The version available at CNET is a demo, free to download and free to try but for 30 days only. After 30 days it expires and registration must be paid to continue use. The GOTD offer on March 3 was the fully licensed version, not a time limited demo.

#176 Keilaron, yep meant to say like to have the OS on its own DRIVE, not it's own directory, lol. Hopefully OS is always in its own DIRECTORY even if people usually mix other software on the same drive, if not somebody would have a mess on their hands. My OS is alone on its own smaller drive with other software on separate drives.

Do they ever put the Giveaway of the day up again for download at a later date? I love animation stuff :-)

George F Bush (#104), mel2000 (#165) - I'm aware I can do this - and I may yet, but I'm not that desperate to move it off - it just annoys me. But thank you. :>
Also, mel2000, great usage example :>

Site Seer (#111) - %homedrive% actually, but that's a moot point. ;>

BillW50 (#136) - That's because they don't. Most layman software will try to keep GIFs to under 256 colors, which is what makes some of them look really awful. In some cases they dither or change the colors even when they don't need to (such as trying to keep to a "web safe" palette, outdated, outdated, outdated!). However, a GIF having more than 256 colors doesn't make it ugly - it only makes it fat.

Kat (#174) - When you save as GIFs, the weather effects are removed :< The water rippling, however, should still work. What did you try exactly?

I have taken two photos, one with water and one with snow. I made the water move and had snow falling but I cannot figure out how to save them. I took them into animation shop, they looked great and were moving but after I saved them they stopped moving. Do any of you know how to save them for using them as gifs/siggys? Thanks. Kat.

@159 First off, I love this site, and thank you.

This looked like a great little Giveaway, and I was so excited about downloading it. But even after registering, the Screensaver and Exe file Saver functions do not work. I’m upset because no one else seems to be mentioning that they are having the same problem. How are you creating the files you’ve made into those formats? And.. How can I use the sample screensavers from the program on my own computer?

I used the button at the top that says Burn Scr. For filename, you cannot just type in the name. You need to click on the folder icon and then browse to the folder and type the file name there. When you say ok, the whole path will be in the window. Click on Build. To make it your screen saver click on install as screen saver.

Well I don't know what happened on your machine Jesse. But I have Aston Shell installed on 4 of my computers and I am very happy with it. Although if you try to uninstall a program (especially a shell) while it is still running, a terrible disaster is about to occur. Is this what you did? If so, you should have switched back to Explorer and then uninstalled Aston Shell.

This is a good program to have but the activation crap has got to be fixed.i know that your protecting the programs from future use or people passing them on to others who missed out, but it's also making it hard for the people who come here and download the programs and it screws up when it goes to activate it. yeah they'll be spreading the word ! but not the word you intended on. but thanks for the ones that did work !

Since the program does not give a choice of installation folder, you can always just drag and drop the installed folder to the location of your choice and WinXP will find it and make adjustments as necessary to load from the new location.

BTW, I don't use the program for screensavers. In conjunction with my video editing program, I use the output as backgrounds to be overlaid with videos or stills containing a transparent alpha channel. I also use my video editor to add any audio in the post-processing stage. The results can be breathtaking when done properly.

My sister in the next state got this program as well, it registered fine on her computer and her son's computer. Both are running XP with SP2, and it registered fine on my XP with SP2.

Those still having problems, it's not your operating system. Something else is wrong. Either the information is being entered incorrectly or in the wrong place. Just in case it IS anything else, try uninstalling, making sure all traces of the program are out of registry. Download a fresh file and try again.

lawler - the answer to the firewall/activation problem is Window's Explorer must not be in "Work Offline" to activate properly. If you're like me and use Firefox or another program most of the time, make sure that the last time you used Internet Explorer that you didn't leave it in Offline mode.

Hi
I downloaded the free version of Nature Illusion Studio Professional Edition. When I try to register, I put in my name and the registration code and it comes back with an error message that the name and registration don't match. I've tried to type it in 4 different times and even deleted the program and downloaded it again with the same problem. I replaced the zero with an O and vice versa where they appeared and that wasn't the problem. How do I register the product?
Thanks

Are most of the people having problems actually copying and pasting the information from the Activation box? I wonder if that's not one of the underlying problems.

#141, BillW50 - "Anybody noticed that the whiners that wanted the latest version isn’t here today? That is because this is the latest version. :)

On a side note… I don’t know why some wants the latest and greatest version?"

You really are a piece of work. This "whiner" bothered to read Aston's change log and noted all the bug fixes and improvements made in the "latest and greatest version" compared to the older one offered by GOTD. It's curious why a professed electrical engineer/rocket scientist prefers software with known bugs and reduced capabilities over current versions which developers strived to improve. But then anyone looking for reasoning skills, facts or ethical behavior will have to look elsewhere than BillW50, GOTD's self-appointed court jester. Are you having any success comprehending how modern digital imaging software actually works, BillW50; as opposed to the lies you posted here recently? I presume you run Windows XP without installing the service packs or the critical security updates Microsoft releases each month. No, none of that "latest, greatest version" stuff for you.

I had no problems installing this. I found it to be very easy to use, and the results are pretty impressive. I had no trouble saving the screen saver, but I can see how some might have been confused by the menu that leads to the web page mentioned. Using the buttons, I had no problems saving in the various formats mentioned in the description. Overall, I liked it! Thanks GOTD for a different and powerful program!

#35 As for the Aston comment, (number 19), I’m guessing you were left with a blank desktop on restart? Try bringing up Windows Task Manager with ctrl+alt+del, then go to the processes tab, click file, run, then enter in this address: http://www.astonshell.com/aston/utilities.htm run the setup, choose explorer as default shell, (even if Aston is uninstalled),and everything should go back to normal. -- tokyowars

I'm still experimenting with today's GOTD offering. I'm not sure I'll keep it (wish the help file was more extensive), but I appreciate the opportunity to try it out. The help file gave the illustration that sounds and objects were already loaded and ready for use. I had to go into the program file folder to find these files then incorporate them. GOTD shows the retail price as $49.95. When I checked Nufsoft's website, it listed the price for Nature Illusion Studio Pro as $39.95; $49.95 was the sale price for a combination of this and another program.

#19, Jesse B - I also experienced numerous problems with Aston. I encourage you (and others) to use an immediate system recovery program such as Rollback Rx, FirstDefense, etc. I use Rollback Rx. To rid myself of all traces of Aston, I just rebooted, pressed the Home key then my PC was restored to a pristine, pre-Aston state.

A few days ago, BillW50, the resident loon, denounced users of digital imaging software and made statements which were both incorrect and preposterous. It only takes Rollback Rx 3 seconds to make a hard drive snapshot; a process he described as "very time consuming." BillW50 claimed imaging software requires 320GB of space to make a snapshot of a 320GB drive with 2GB on it. Windows System Restore (which I found to be unreliable) typically uses 5-15% disk space per snapshot; RollBack Rx only uses 0.1% I have a 160GB hard drive which is around half full and that includes numerous backup snapshots (Rollback Rx is capable of making up to 60,000 snapshots). Unlike Windows System Restore, Rollback Rx and FirstDefense protect everything on your PC - data files, programs, user settings, etc. - not just system files. If you take the proper precautions, imaging software will allow you to recover your operating system, data files, and all programs even in the event of a complete hard drive failure.

I wish to thank the posters in these threads who've recommended alternate software to the GOTD offerings. I've found some handy free programs by checking out several recommendations made here.

On a side note... I don't know why some wants the latest and greatest version? As in my experience (not in this case), some newer versions are really worse than earlier versions. Just something to think about for all of you whiners out there. So be careful for what you wish for. :)
