If genuine peer review and testing is what these companies are looking for, then what's the point of offering the cheap version? Obviously, most of the suggestions for improvements are probably already found in the "gold"/"premium" editions and will never make it into basic versions. If you're just looking for traffic to your site and looking for up-sales, then why ask for people to waste their time reviewing a version that will never live up to expectations?

Not good at all. It insists on making pictures too small in the final video even though they look the right size in previews. It's just too frustrating trying to get it to do what you want done.

I can’t fathom some of the habitual knockers we get on here, but for those interested I think it’s a great little programme.

1: It’s a very modest size for what it can do.
2: It installs and activates without a problem.
3: It does exactly what it says it can do and does it very well.
4: It’s a great price. FREE
5: It’s a keeper for me and I’d give it 9/10 and 10 if it was the Gold version.

So if you want a programme like this I doubt you’ll be disappointed.

Got to agree with you, Stunned. Personally, I'd like to see the thumbs-up/down done away with, or posted the next day. I've been following GAOTD for a long time, and some of the most useful softare for my needs were the ones that had an enormous thumbs-down-to-up ratio. It's hard to imagine that huge ratios like this could exist only an hour or so after publication and be even remotely accurate.
This program has some features I like and some issues I don't, but that is the case with many programs. I'm adding it to my collection for when its features are the best one for the job.

Tim, yes it is still free. The branding is just a small graphic or text link, your choice, at the bottom of the page...no biggie. i.e. "Create web photo albums and photo books with Jalbum | Chameleon skin". If it really bothers you, you could edit the html and remove it.

Windows DVD Maker is an FREE application included in premium editions (Home Premium and Ultimate) of Windows Vista, and Windows 7 Home Premium and above editions that is designed to enable the creation of DVD movies that can be played using DVD playback software or on a standalone consumer DVD player. In some ways, it is comparable to iDVD in Mac OS X.
Windows DVD Maker has a simple Aero Wizard-style user interface. The first step of the wizard involves importing video files from the computer's file system. The videos can be rearranged to play in a different order, and Windows DVD Maker automatically splits the videos into scenes that can be accessed from a special Scene Selection page in the DVD menu system.

In the next step, various animated DVD menu styles can be applied. Many of these are similar to the transition effects available in Windows Movie Maker. Users can also customise the font and button styles. Windows DVD Maker can also add a slide show of pictures with a musical accompaniment and transition effects. The application can also show an interactive preview of what the DVD will look and act like when it has been burned. For example, users can navigate the DVD menus using the arrow buttons (mimicking the action of using a DVD player remote control).

Windows DVD Maker is designed to encode video as a "below normal" priority background process to ensure the computer remains responsive during the burn process. By design this feature puts the program at the back of the line among user mode applications. This can be circumvented using the Windows Task Manager to adjust the priority.[1]

Fast download and great installation and activation on Win 8 Beta x64.
Easily loaded images into slideshow with previews. Played well on my Lenovo G555 dual core AMD with 3 Gb.
The file size is about 2Mb per image with 3 images was 6 Mb in exe mode.

Am I understanding this right, if you pay for the MySlideShow Gold then you get the pan and zoom features that come free with Microsoft Photostory 3? What a bargin...
I say this because I have used the Microsoft Photostory 3 (free) for quite a while and am real happy with the results.

http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=11132

Of course you have to have a genuine validated copy of Windows XP to install. So if you are running a bootleg copy of windows then don't bother to download.

I have tried many web slide show makers and in my opinion the best is jAlbum. Granted it only does html albums, but it has hundreds of customizable skins, and it is FREE. To see some albums made with jAlbum visit my website Chris's Crazy Contraptions. Check out the "House Fire" section to see a fully customized album. If you don't have a website, jAlbum gives you 2gigs of space to share your albums with everyone. Your album can also be printed as a hard cover book right from the jAlbum program using Blurb.

ProShow Gold dominates the DVD slideshow market but comes at a prohibitively high cost and isn't that easy to manage (particularly in the essential pan and zoom operation.) Beating ProShow Gold hands down in that respect, and equalling it in so many others, is Microsoft's venerable, free PhotoStory 3, developed way back before home DVD players were even on sale and when every monitor was a 4:3 ratio CRT. And output was always to the proprietary .ps file format. Work-arounds, however, mean PhotoStory 3 is still perfectly useable and yields results indistinguishable from ProShow Gold: PhotoStory 3 wmv output is easily transcoded by freeware converters and the necessary widescreen effect can be achieved by image cropping prior to loading.

Perhaps predictably, today's developer has elected to tag its premium version as 'Gold'. And seek $39 for it rather than the $29 sticker price on today's GAOTD. The difference is more than $10sworth: one's a $29 donkey, t'other is very likely a genuine $39 contender.

A good home-made slideshow, as distinct from a tedious one, is hallmarked by the varying durations of on-screen images, the varying duration of dissolve or fade-in / out transitions, and, vitally, the ability to zoom out from part of an image, or zoom in, or pan slowly from left to right or vice versa.

None of those features are present in so much of the mass-produced slideshow software on sale today: slides change robotically according to the software's preferences in much the same way that transition times are likewise automated. And as for pan and zoom -- the so-called 'Ken Burns Effect' -- forget it.

To its credit, today's developer has eschewed that over-automated route. But the two elements that would make My Slideshow a must-have GAOTD are not in the version offered today: TimeLine editing, and -- crucially -- Pan & Zoom motion effects, both of which are reserved for the $39 product only.

Obviously, lower-priced stripped down versions of any software have a commercial purpose in that they exist to upsell the customer to a more expensive version. Such may well be the case with My Slideshow. But it's a real shame the developer is offering only the hobbled version today without any incentive (other than the missing features) to upgrade to the $39 Gold: there's a huge potential audience out there for something which can do what PhotoStory 3 does for nothing, but without all the hoops that have to be jumped through with the Microsoft product.

Absent a competitively priced upgrade offer, therefore, and the features that would seem to make a a DVD authored in My Slideshow Gold well worth creating -- and well worth viewing -- thanks GAOTD, but no thanks.

@OldScotty re #19:

If a program can create only WMV output, that is no problem. There are several good free apps such as Freemake Video Converter and Iwisoft Video Converter that can convert your WMV into many other popular formats.

You can make very good slideshows using combinations of freeware such as Irfanview, Picasa, and Freemake Video Converter. Here is something I made using those 3 programs:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gu6HTmboUD0

I used Irfanview to create the animated rotating effects, Picasa to make short WMV slideshows of the individual graphics and to create the text screens at the end, and FVC to join the WMV's, add the soundtrack, and upload to YooTube. YouTube generated a complete MP4 video which I was able to download and submit to other sites such as Daily Motion.

Installed, added my Nascar Dir., half ass locking loaded. added 80 photo files, added 13 audio files roughly, thing locked up, Buuuurrrrrrrrp I was patient, then it came back and said something. I forget. Hit Play. It worked but the video was an itty bitty 3" x 4" box in the middle of black screen -lol

I killed the process, restarted, tried to make new project but she's not even looking for photos or video or audio now. Can't do what ever I did.

Uninstalling right away. This thing needs work. Have a nice day. ;o)

On opening a good and functional interface was presented, however, there was nothing to raise it above many slideshow maker's, some free.
This includes Microsoft's Photo Story 3 whose only limitation is the output format being restricted to WMV.

It is a shame they restricted it to this version for today's download as a gold looks like it has great potential.

Uninstalled, as more limiting in its audio control than Photo Story 3 so I'll stick with it.

@11: which is why one should only look at user ratings to get a good laugh, even in the comments section. You have been critical of the GAOTD community, you will now be brutally assaulted with thumbs down from the trolls. The rest of us who either don't care about what you said or agree have jobs - or at least we have jobs that don't involve bashing the competition with negative ratings.

As for this software, it will take a while for me to download so I'll leave my comments about the user interface, etc for a later post. Per the company's web site, the only difference between the standard and gold editions are (1) the ability to custom sync the music track, (2)pan & zoom, and (3)adding pop-up boxes.

For comparison, Ashampoo's basic slide show product found here:
http://www.ashampoo.com/en/usd/pin/0366/5-Multimedia-Software/Ashampoo-Slideshow-Studio-Elements

It does all these things for a $10 price. I don't know if this is what the previous user was referring to as they have other slide-show products, I was just looking at the bottom of the barrel that they offer.

Thx for your comments, much appreciated.

As for what is on offer today, I'll pass. In the past I've downloaded and tried many. If the Gold version was being offered, I'd probably have given it a try, as then I would have something to compare with what I'm currently using.

I have been using presentation tools almost all my professional years (now I am near retirement). I have reached a conclusion long time ago, which is "There is no presentation tool got it all!".

It is only what your requirements are, then the choice of selecting the best presentation tool to do the job emerge.

Personally, this software is no keeper, yet it is truly very handy for those who need it for what it can do. Then it is going to be the best choice and deserve the recommendation it ought to receive.

I highly recommend it for those who are into very quick results for personal reasons like family events capture and distribution with a kick of happy moments commentaries(as one example).

And one final comment, it would be much more transparent to see the individual tally for the 'yes' box and the 'no' box ie yes 5+|no 3- This would allow users to see how many people had voted, but also, more importantly, it would giver users much more information, useful information. If I read a comment and saw 'yes|no 2+' I could assume that only 2 people had voted and they had both found the comment useful. When, in actual fact, 56 users could have voted yes and 54 users voted no. While the net result would still be 2+, the latter actually provides far more useful information.

What I think would be a faaaar more helpful and 'relatively' objective way of rating both the product and the comments would be for GOATD to delay ‘publishing’ the feedback for an hour or so. By that I mean, people could send in their comments and/or vote on the product as per usual, but the feedback wouldn’t actually be posted, for the world to see, until at least an hour later. At least that way there'd be the opportunity for independent thought and evaluation.

Deferring the publishing would allow/ encourage users to *actually* download and experiment, or do their own research to see if it's something they feel they could use and/or trust. Or, if before downloading, users really wanted to see what other users (and the pseudonymed product owners and competitors) thought, they could hold back for an hour until the comments were uploaded. Even then, I don't think GOATD should 'publish' users’ ratings of the product or the comment for yet another hour. I'm convinced it’s seeing the ratings too soon that hijacks the band wagons and thus the validity of the outcome. There's a big difference between peer review and peer influence.

If genuine and useful user-feedback is what everyone's here for (aside from the freebie of course) then I'm sure there's a better process GOATD could employ.

While I only sometimes download what's on offer here, I always check in each day to read the comments. What I can never get over is that one day a comment will receive +10 for 'found this comment useful' and the next day the near identical statement will be howled down. Sometimes the near identical statements, each of which receives wildly different responses, can actually be on the same day! One thumbs down and the 10-manned thumbs-down wagon suddenly becomes full.

Free giveaways are only part of what this site offers; the other is living, breathing social research in action. The power of peer influence over individual thought!

I live in Oz and either I receive my 'giveaway of the day' alert later than the rest of the world, or there's at least 200 people out there who download, install and rate the latest program within 1 minute of the alert arriving! I’m not sure quite sure how all of that can be achieved in 1 minute?! What I find particularly stunning, is that the overall percentages for the thumbs-up/ thumbs-down product rating, at just 5 minutes in, is pretty much the same 1hr, 2hr, 5hrs later. I can only believe this is peer influence at play.

Trash this version and only keep your gold edition..

Reason is that in today's market you need editing.. people's memory are getting worst and worst.. you need a more permanent direction.. cause with OpenOffice (LibreOffice) you can make a presentation that's better than what is given today... I'm not saying the program is bad just that concentrating on 2 versions won't help much...

Thanks Anix Software + GOTD.

I wanted to put the [MySlideShow Plug-ins 3] as a sub-directory of the main [MySlideShow 3.5.6] folder but the software does not allow.
It will flash an error message if I do that.

The software is fixed and programmed to run with the [MySlideShow Plug-ins 3] folder nested in my Program Files folder. These are the DVD/CD burner plug-ins.

I am using Wondershare Slideshow Builder Standard Ver 6.1.9 and will compare this software against it.

Reference standard is ProShow Gold which I do not have.
