A bit late but a slightly longer review.

I think it's important to run through the options before doing anything. I'd certainly set it not to update existing artwork for the first run, to avoid finger trouble.

For selecting files you can run up and down the directory structure ticking folders or files which get added to a list. You can just keep going, no need to do it an album at a time. I wish it would return to the same spot when you go up a level, rather than the start of the dir.

When you tell it to search it can download several images per album and you can choose which one to use, there are little dots above the image showing how many alternatives it's found.

As I said earlier it can update art into iTunes while it;s running, so you can use iTunes' album view to spot albums without art and watch them appear.

As far as I can see it didn't nuke any mp3s while messing with artwork.

It only works for tracks with Album names in them, it would be nice to do singles too.

I tried it on Audio Books but it didn't seem interested. (iTunes doesn't seem great at getting covers when it rips them from CDs.) Would be a nice addition.

The odd mp3 increased quite a bit in size (over 110k). Maybe there should be some limit/check on image size in bytes?

Overall I'm very pleased. If they added Audio Book support (and maybe singles) in a rev 2 I'd probably buy it.

I'll stick to Amarok. It can do the art thingy and also searches for the lyrics and Wiki. And above all is Opensource.

To accept the download for program,
I must agree to the "Software Download Manager", which says:

"By continuing with the installation, you agree to:
Set your home and new tab page to searchinfast.com.
Set your default search to searchinfast.com".

This is HOGWASH! ! If this is the new system, then count me OUT.

WinXP SP3.

Installed this sandboxed (Sandboxie 5.12).
Install seemed to work just fine.
But the most I get is the opening banner & then it exits memory.

Tried the "standard" install, then a minimal install.
Same results with both.

Is this faster or better than Exact Audio Copy at finding covers, artwork or lyrics?

I have Tag & Rename and this has been part of the program for a long time.

Reply   |   Comment by Jeffy  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+3)

Jeffy,

Our goal was to created a more automated method for gathering album art, viewing album art, and to provide additional options not available in Tag & Rename such as automatic artwork resizing and updating your iTunes library upon saving the artwork, to name a few. Whichever program you choose, as long as you are able to complete your album artwork collection, that's what matters.

John

I have original collections of music, however this software finds the recent re-issue albums covers and destroyed my original albums.
Example: Beatles original album cover from 1969 issued in London, was replaced with mush-mesh covers from individual songs record covers from RCA and EMI and generic boot leg covers.
I stopped it before it ruined all of my collections (thousands of albums),

KW44,

This specific reason is why we default to only showing music files in albums that do not have existing artwork. We don't want to mess with the quality covers that people may already have. Nothing is saved or overwritten until you choose to save it.

Also, the dots above each album show the multiple versions of covers that have been found. It's a good idea to go through these to choose the best one out of the many that are available. If none work, then deselecting the album so it is not saved is your best bet.

John

I gave a thumb up to this GOTD offer. It is not bad at all. I tried the program with some 700 oldies mp3's and it took nearly half an hour to find 20% of them. So, to search all the artworks for my 25000+ records collection requires high-math to find the total time to make the job. This could be improved with multithreading search but maybe it is not worth the cost both in program coding and bandwidth.

Luis,

Thanks for the feedback. The album artwork services we use have limits to the number of requests that can be performed per second. We've made sure to use these to the max, however, a large collection still can take quite some time due to this service limitation.

And this is better than the always free "Album Art Downloader" how?

Elias, This is what this forum is for. Do the research and tell us.

Craig, or perhaps someone who *already knows* can post a comment, saving Elias and others considerable effort . . . . No harm in asking.

Elias, I have to agree with Craig; you don't have to do an in depth review just tell us the major differences - for instance you could tell us how to make "Album Art Downloader" work automatically versus manually.

I do not have the time to do in depth research, but based on my quick research (I have never used either program) the main difference between "MuvUnder Cover" and "Album Art Downloader" is that "MuvUnder Cover" does thing automatically where as with "Album Art Downloader" one must do things manually although it can be manipulated with "script".

After quick research I found that "Album Art Downloader" received rather high ratings by both users and tech editors while "MuvUnder Cover" only received ratings in the middle of the curve. In all fairness the cross section of users ratings is quite low, however, tech editor reviews are exactly the same; smack dab in the middle of the curve.

I used both "Softpedia" and "fileforum" for user and tech ratings. There was one other program that was rated higher than both of the programs discussed. I will not elaborate because it had limitations that I could not live with, it had no editor review, the cross section of users was very low, and it is a paid program.

It would help all of us if you would tell us what you think the main differences are and what makes "Album Art Downloader" a superior program to "MuvUnder Cover".

Y'all have a good one now . . . . . . .

Mike S.,

Our goal as the developers was to create an easier to use program for mass downloading artwork with additional features not available in our competitors. I'm sure the two different applications have their pros and cons depending on the needs of the user. We recommend trying both to see which one fits your usage and needs better.

After changing to foobar, I spent quite a lot of time removing embedded artwork which was basically just wasting space. I only need the art work once for an album...

This software looks like it will just put me back where I used to be. I read the online manual and found nowhere where you can tell it to just save a jpeg into the album folder. If it can't do that, I'll pass thanks.

Reply   |   Comment by Mememe  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+11)

Mememe,

We specifically chose to embed the artwork in the file due to the fact that the "folder.jpg" method is not as reliable as having the covers embedded in the music file. iTunes also works best with embedded artwork. The increase in file size can be a concern for some, but it really depends on each users specific needs. As always, the software is yours to either use or not use depending on your needs.

John

Installed okay and worked nicely, updating album art in iTunes while it was running. Also has some nice options like not to over-write any existing art.
Thanks!
