Ha ha. Fantastic company name! Really inspires faith in their products! Oh yes, I'm definitely going to install a free utility from Maniac Tools and trust it to delete files from my computer. Not.

Oh well I suppose you have to give them credit for having a sense of humour.

if you have proper ID3 tags, winamp, mediamonkey and even WMP are enough to find your dupes. this program is useless for me. Have given it a try but all it found where gamerelated soundfiles as dupes (besides my normal music collection where songs from different albums where found as dupes but that was already established as happening by other users here)

is the "listening" an intro (like 10 seconds ?) or is it the full song ... songs can sound similar for 10 seconds but go their separate ways in a minute or 2.

and i can see doing GBs of songs in a few seconds. seems to me it would take hours. and to compare each song would have to be remembered ... that uses up a lot of space (or take one and compare to all others).

can it tell the difference between an original AND an archive/backup that look the same but you want the archive/backup folder to be a copy JUST IN CASE. as in itunes ... i use tunetools to make a copy of the original (from ipod nano) and save it elsewhere. it would look the same as the original.

how much trouble is it in telling where something dup is from and if it is an archive/backup ?

Bad software!

Crashed my computer with "Out of Memory" error.

This is absurd because my laptop has 4 GB memory (Vista 32), dual core Toshiba bought in 2008. No other program does this.

Stay away from this.

I tend to keep my mp3s on data CDs and DVDs so this program wouldn't do me much good. I also deliberately keep duplicates of some files. If it's something I've recorded myself they I may want to have duplicates.

And has anyone tested to see how it handles multiple files that don't have their ID3 tags entered?

I would think that using the "details" directory listings in Windows and sorting using the song titles would help find duplicates as well.

Installed and activated just fine.

Compared two folder branches: 1883 files, compare by sound and ID3 tags. It took 40 min 32 sec - I did not run it in background (Q6600 @ 2.4MHz, SATA 7200 RPM). Found 217 dups. Like r0lz says, be sure to change the default from ID3 tags only to music + tag, if desired.

I haven't experimented with similarity thresholds but if the options work the way it seems they should it looks intriguing, e.g. compare by sound difference of 7 sec, minimum similarity percent for dups 80% (those are the default values).

An update on my earlier comment about folders--there's a folder pane on left where you can select which folders to compare. This addresses my need to select different folders to compare.

It groups dups; you can specify highest bitrate file as the top in the grouping then other files fall under it; it has a toggle selection box to select all the dups (primary stays unselected).

You can specify folder(s) to preserve dups if they are found there and folder(s) where dups must be removed.

It shows percent similarity for each file.

I did not delete any files, but assuming that part works I think the program seems pretty good at what it's for.

I wonder where the stats are saved during the scan (is it kept after the scan?). Memory footprint remained fairly constant at 50K during scan, peak=117K, VM Size 40.3K (Task Mgr, Win XP SP3), CPU 10-20% generally.

Cheers!
