Ha ha. Fantastic company name! Really inspires faith in their products! Oh yes, I'm definitely going to install a free utility from Maniac Tools and trust it to delete files from my computer. Not.

Oh well I suppose you have to give them credit for having a sense of humour.

if you have proper ID3 tags, winamp, mediamonkey and even WMP are enough to find your dupes. this program is useless for me. Have given it a try but all it found where gamerelated soundfiles as dupes (besides my normal music collection where songs from different albums where found as dupes but that was already established as happening by other users here)

is the "listening" an intro (like 10 seconds ?) or is it the full song ... songs can sound similar for 10 seconds but go their separate ways in a minute or 2.

and i can see doing GBs of songs in a few seconds. seems to me it would take hours. and to compare each song would have to be remembered ... that uses up a lot of space (or take one and compare to all others).

can it tell the difference between an original AND an archive/backup that look the same but you want the archive/backup folder to be a copy JUST IN CASE. as in itunes ... i use tunetools to make a copy of the original (from ipod nano) and save it elsewhere. it would look the same as the original.

how much trouble is it in telling where something dup is from and if it is an archive/backup ?

Bad software!

Crashed my computer with "Out of Memory" error.

This is absurd because my laptop has 4 GB memory (Vista 32), dual core Toshiba bought in 2008. No other program does this.

Stay away from this.

I tend to keep my mp3s on data CDs and DVDs so this program wouldn't do me much good. I also deliberately keep duplicates of some files. If it's something I've recorded myself they I may want to have duplicates.

And has anyone tested to see how it handles multiple files that don't have their ID3 tags entered?

I would think that using the "details" directory listings in Windows and sorting using the song titles would help find duplicates as well.

Installed and activated just fine.

Compared two folder branches: 1883 files, compare by sound and ID3 tags. It took 40 min 32 sec - I did not run it in background (Q6600 @ 2.4MHz, SATA 7200 RPM). Found 217 dups. Like r0lz says, be sure to change the default from ID3 tags only to music + tag, if desired.

I haven't experimented with similarity thresholds but if the options work the way it seems they should it looks intriguing, e.g. compare by sound difference of 7 sec, minimum similarity percent for dups 80% (those are the default values).

An update on my earlier comment about folders--there's a folder pane on left where you can select which folders to compare. This addresses my need to select different folders to compare.

It groups dups; you can specify highest bitrate file as the top in the grouping then other files fall under it; it has a toggle selection box to select all the dups (primary stays unselected).

You can specify folder(s) to preserve dups if they are found there and folder(s) where dups must be removed.

It shows percent similarity for each file.

I did not delete any files, but assuming that part works I think the program seems pretty good at what it's for.

I wonder where the stats are saved during the scan (is it kept after the scan?). Memory footprint remained fairly constant at 50K during scan, peak=117K, VM Size 40.3K (Task Mgr, Win XP SP3), CPU 10-20% generally.

Cheers!

I design sound for a community theater, so I have a LOT of music. I ran the program against a directory on a Seagate Free Agent 1TB external HD, with 108GB of music. Comparing only using ID-3 tags took 17:19, found 319 duplicates with a total of 505.10 MB of potentially freeable space. The match percentage was set to 80%, based on these settings, the program performed as described. Using the percentage match, I was able to see exact duplicates (by ID-3 tag)listed as 100% matches without difficulty. The software was also able to find duplicates of songs that appear on different albums, and listed them as 85.92% matches (Why that number?) This is very useful.

Occasionally I have session tracks for stage rehearsals while the final orchestrated tracks are being finished in the studio. With the ID-3 tags nearly identical. Again, these were property listed as matches, but not 100% matches. A useful tool for finding earlier versions. There are also a number of "minus tracks" in my collection where the music came without vocals or the vocals have been removed (these are audition tracks.) The software was able to locate these tracks and listed them as 80% matches.

I haven't tested the software on the ID-s + listen or listen only modes.

Negatives: Once the list of duplicates/potential duplicates is found, the list cannot be sorted. With a collection this large, this is a big drawback. Scrolling through a big list like this is timeconsuming and a nuisance.

The duplicates are preselected for removal, and there is no provision to de-select multiple files for retention. While the software does permit group selection of files is the list, the duplicates are hidden and don't get included in the group select. It is necessary to do a non-contiguous group select for these, and then they don't de-select as a block. This is a serious design flaw that could result in inadvertent loss of data. It is also a nuisance to have expand the duplicate set and deselect each file individually. (Yes, you can expand all of them, but this makes for a very very long list...)

1. installed & activated & run easy on XP SP3.
2. compared my music folder with "By ID3 tags" gave me many files that were not duplicates.
Tried "By Sound" method, and actually worked ! i don't know if it found every duplicate, but it found some at least. Got to say it found some files (3 items) that were not duplicates, but they were the same artist and had almost the same style (the songs were in bulgarian).
Bottom line: great software, but for one time use. i don't know about you but after it cleaned my music folder, i uninstalled it because i don't need it anymore. I don't download the same songs all over again. So i prefer not to spend money on on-time-use software (but as a GOTD it's great)

For the ones that have trouble with this, try the "Compare By Sound" method because the ID3 tags must be exactly the same in order to be duplicates.

Personally I was pleased with the accuracy and speed, tested separately vs some 20Gb of mixed classical and Chinese pop.

Those reporting false duplicates could check the settings parameters where you can tweak the degree of similarity permitted. ('Similarity' has similar settings which can be adjusted to increase the rate of false detection, but granted, it is a significantly more comprehensive program).

Likes:
- only 1 false duplicates detected in classical or Chinese pop (about 20Gb worth) with search set to sound + tags (same song, slightly different in places). (I used default settings).
- fast - 6minutes for 16Gb including sound search
- total size of duplicates reported
- did not fully occupy a CPU core whilst scanning

Dislikes:
- after tag scan, time remaining increases- no real indication.
- 'selected file' is unclear when rt clicking on a found file when files are selected by check box and the one you have clicked on. E.g. 'Delete selected files from disk' - Which will be deleted? Needs clarification

Suggest:
In the results list:
- Add mouseover tooltip for tick, x refresh or exchange double arrow to explain function
In settings:
- clarify or add legends - some settings didn't seem intuitive to me.

Similarity wins
- range of file types,
- 'analysis' set of results highlights weak copies/tracks on several technical bases.

@13 r0lz: "use Similarity instead. The free version is already much more powerful than this GOTD, and the commercial version costs $5 more". Per their web site 1-yr= $19.95 and lifetime= $34.95. I didn't see anything that talked about a $5 delta. Similarity's ability to compare folders may be the compelling feature for me, as I have two sets of music and two libraries for each--a main library and an intermediate library--and I want to compare both before merging intermediate into main. Bit rates, ID3 tags, and even file names can be different, so a tool like today's would be helpful to me. Will download and if I get a chance today will share results.

I always back my MP3's up on an external drive so gave this a whirl.

I have a LOT of MP3's with the same name but remixes/extended etc,The program ignored even though I change the ID Tags!

I'd love to see a program that can *hear* the difference but it seems this one listens but is a bit deaf!

This worked like a dream on my Win 7 Pro 64 bit and an old Win XP Pro as well. It does what it says and is fast enough not be be a bind; thanks for the program.

Does anyone know what's happened to Ashraf; has he left, or is he still reviewing, but just posting on his site? Infortunately I no longer have a shortcut to his site since reinstalling my Windows OS, so if someone could post it here or in the forums I'd be most grateful.

Fairly accurate (in my case) in finding dupes but lousy error handling; repeatedly crashing when it (apparently) encountered a file it didn't like (win 7).

Worth installing from here? Maybe. Worth buying? Not with the crashes

Installed easily on my Windows 7 home Premium. First scan on the external hard drive: " no duplicates". Time spent scanning: less than a minute. Then I went to a folder Music Pops where I keep thousands of songs. Well, scanning took more than a half hour and found several duplicates. (some of them not really duplicates)

My advice, go to the folders and not to the root letter of the drive.

Have I done something wrong? Loaded and activated the program easily enough, when I ran it on one of my folders with about 6000 tracks it says it found over 4500 duplicates, which was clearly wrong, looking through the list of duplicates none of them actually were. Whatever you do don't just hit the delete button, I'll read through the help section again but I think I'll be deleting the program.

To everybody: if you see that the program doesn't detect duplicates where it should or does find duplicates that aren't such, please check your duplicate search settings and email us a screenshot of them. If you created a copy of some file, changed its title to something different and try to search duplicates by title, this won't work. Just the same, if you search for duplicates using ID3 tags and sound and the program finds some duplicates that aren't such, take a look at the ID3 tags of the files.

Download and installed perfectly on windows 7 64x. Easy and simple to use interface. Took 44:23 minutes to search over 120gb of music files and found 1146 duplicates(7.32gb). Found some duplicates I didnt know about but just like other users have said, It makes errors. After the search, problem becomes a pain, after expanding everything and choosing which file to delete it collapses everything and reselects all of them. With 1146 duplicates this can get annoying

Question: How do you keep your music files?

All in one folder, or organized?

If you keep all in one folder, this program is probably something for you. My next question would be; why not organize your collection?

If you do keep your files organized, what do you need this program for? The only duplicates it will find in my collection are the ones where the same song are on different albums. And hey, I want to keep all the albums. I mean, why not? Storage space is quite cheap today. When I buy a new album, I buy it because I want that album, not because I only want the songs I did not allready have. (If I did want only the songs I do not have, I would have bought the album online, song by song, and only the ones I did not have before.)

My music is stored "Disk/first letter in artist name/Artist name/Year + Album Name/Song". This makes my music accessible both through a music player and in plain old explorer.

So... This is a nice little program. Finding similar songs across several file types is nice programming.
I just cannot see any use for it.

Sorry.

SORRY! I must confess that I was wrong (in post #11).

For whatever reason, the default setting is to search files by ID3 tags ONLY! Of course, unless the tags are exactly identical, MDR cannot find the dupes. In the other hand, it consider as dupes the files that have the same tags, so if your music collection is not correctly tagged, it cannot work properly.

I don't understand why that option is the default, as it is pretty useless and somewhat dangerous. Furthermore, it searches some tags that should not be taken into account (for example, the track number, so, if you have the same track in two albums, it cannot find them as dupes if they do not have the same track number). Luckily, it is possible to change the list of tags to search for in the options.

I redid some tests with the option to search by Music only, and of course the process was much longer, but much more accurate. It has found several real dupes, and with this first test, it has not found false positives.

I said also that it is impossible to find the dupes across folders. That's still true, but there are options to group the files by folder. You can therefore ask the program to remove the dupes preferably from one specific folder, and keep them in your music collection folder. That's not as powerful as I wish, but it's not so bad.

I strongly suggest to change immediately the compare method (in the Search Options tab of the left pane), and to redo the tests. This GOTD is not bad, although not as powerful as Similarity.

Ran a scan on the basis of ID3 tags only and it found 56 dupes .... one of which was a glaringly obvious mismatch .... so you need to check every entry individually.

Re-ran the scan on the basis of ID3 and sound.
It initally produced the same list as above before starting to go through all the files again comparing the sound ..... a process which appears to take a very long time ..... so long that I have given up on it.

Surely a useful option would have been to scan only the previously found dupes on a sound comparison basis as a way of weeding out the mismatches.

Hey it worked great for me, installed just fine, then when I ran it the first time I only did one drive so if I lost music files, but it found lots of dups and only deleted the duplicates. I really like it saves me from having to go thru and remove after I have reinstalled Windows 7
Good one in my humble opinion

Hum, I've just tested Music Duplicate Remover and I must say that it's a very bad product.

I have simply copied some tracks elsewhere in my music collection. The files are therefore EXACT duplicates, except that I have modified some of the tags. (I have added a "comment" tag in the copied files). And MDR has recognized NONE OF THEN as dupes!

Also, I have two identical tracks in two different formats (MP3 and OGG), and again MDR has not found them.

It has found only one dupe (this one was correct) in my entire music collection. I'm sure I have at least 100 dupes (correctly found by Similarity), and several short versions of longer tracks. None of them were found bu MDR.

Furthermore, it is impossible to compare two group of files together. (For example, I would like to compare a folder with the files in another folder, but not search for the dupes in the same folder.) That's not possible, and it's a major limitation. (Similarity has the same limitation, but Audio Comparer, given here previously, can do that.)

MDR processes the files very quickly, but since the results are not accurate at all, it's not surprising.

Don't waste your time in installing this software, and use Similarity instead. The free version is already much more powerful than this GOTD, and the commercial version costs $5 more, but it is really excellent, and suitable for professionals. Also, it can process all audio formats (if you have the right codec), unlike MDR, limited to 7 formats.

If you have a music collection that is NOT ID tagged be very careful with this program. Be sure to expand all elements and verify each track it thinks is a duplicate before you delete. It is not able to see any difference between Bach and folk tunes if the bitrate and file sizes are fairly similar. I guess the "listening" ability is an aspirational feature designed to attract customers rather than deliver results.

If it were not free today I would have asked for my money back.

An excellent semi-free alternative is Similarity: http://www.music-similarity.com/
The free version has some limitations, but is great anyway. It uses several algorithms, including a user supported online database. But it cannot compare a group of files with another group, which makes it difficult to use to check if the tracks you are about to add in your collection has dupes.

@ #4 Barry: Glary Utilities is not at all a similar tool. Take in mind that if you change a single byte in a file, it will not be considered as a dupe any more. Most music files have tags, and if you change, say, the title of the track in the tag, it will be considered as different by Glary. Also, as you said, a file encoded in a different format or with another bitrate is also completely different. But with tools like this GOTD or Similarity, you can find them anyway.
They *should* also be able to find the tracks that are shorter versions of longer versions (such as the single version of an album track), but of course, they should indicate that the dupe is a subset of the other file. (I haven't checked if Music Duplicate Remover can do that, but Similarity can.)

I use Glary Utilities (free version and the Pro version that I got from GAOTD a while back) to find duplicate files of all types, not just music. I think the algorithm in that package would likely reduce the need for AudioConverter. I would agree, however, that Glary would not find the same track in two file formats, however, it makes paying $30 for a dupe finder only for audio seem rather expensive.

The use of ID3 tags to find dupes seems like a good idea, as does the "listening" bit, but I have both FLAC versions and MP3 versions on my computer and want both. It is unclear how the software would respond. (FLAC is the high-quality archive, MP3 is what I put on my Sansa Clip+.) Given the number of GAOTD audio/video converters, it seems to me that many people might want duplicates of some files.

The company website notes, "In much the same way, you can easily choose whether to remove duplicate tracks with a higher bitrate value, or with a lower one." It isn't clear to me from that description what would happen if I have 2 MP3 with different bit-rates, since that was in reference to file types.

The website does not mention support for AAC files which is not an issue for me, but may affect many who have any Apple material. The website lists MP3, OGG Vorbis, WMA, APE, FLAC, and MPC.

The idea of being able to "quarantine" possible duplicates without deleting them for a little bit seems like a good feature.

I am unlikely to download this giveaway because I do not have a very large music collection on my computer and feel that I have enough other tools to find duplicates.

[And maybe that's what I've been trying to get at with some other comments I have posted. The software might be nice, but as the kind of person who visits GAOTD daily and downloads occasionally, this giveaway is not compelling. Even at no cost, I would not be interested. I can understand how others might be interested, which is unlike the PDF to JPG converter which I still think has a very small target market.]

I have downloaded other GOTD duplicate programs but this one says it's geared for music so I thought I'd try it.
Running on XPsp3, loaded in seconds, activation went smoothly and it showed up as a personal license after I restarted the program.

Ran the program... took 3:45 seconds to go through 5,763 songs. Not bad really.
The interface is very clear and easy to use. You can even move some of the headers around to show what is important to you. It found 95 duplicate files. I went through them just to check to make sure they were dups. Turns out they were and the found dups were all located in other folders. Saved 369 megs it said once deleted.

The only Cons I have is after I clicked the tab to delete the dups, it came up with an error message... "Music Duplicate Remover" "External Exceptin 80000003." What ever that means. It did delete the files, but left 6 stragelers behind. I had to hit delete once more to clear them.

Other than that, it does what it is suppose to, fast and very easy to use. I'm going to keep it. Thanks GOTD for all you give us.
