I wanted to test a few things so I downloaded this GOTD.

Author of this program must learn a few things before making his software public.

1. Never, I repeat, never install in C:\MP4ToMP3Converter. This is very unprofessional and most laughable.
2. At least provide a recent ffmpeg version. The one in the data folder is 5 (yes, five) year old !!! LOL^5

3. If you want to use your own active X control, at least make the uninstall clean. On the contrary:

4. MSCOMCTL.OCX in the program folder is older than the one in system32. Author must learn how installers work. It's easy to check a DLL/OCX/... against the one already registered. Any beginner would do that, even the one who has taken correspondence courses.

Registry after uninstallation:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{1EFB6596-857C-11D1-B16A-00C0F0283628}\InprocServer32
@="c:\\MP4ToMP3Converter\\MSCOMCTL.OCX"

There are a few keys like that.

Seeing BS like that makes me angry.

My advice: *** DO NOT INSTALL THIS PRODUCT ***

Install is easy with the activation code in the zip file's READ ME txt.
Restart required as you add the code half way thru first use.
You use Drag and Drop - or navigate thru windows - to get to your choice MP4.

The different bit rate choices available in creating your MP3 have created different sized audio output results.

There is a simple snip and cut function to remove unwanted sections form the end result. The Hour/Minute/Second settings inside of OPTIONS are very simple.
You need other software to find your way, though. I had to use VLC Player to find my minute and second stop/start points. And VLC Player is not very accurate in it's seconds and minutes read outs. Just a moving dot that gives approximate times within a few seconds of the moving dot.
If any one knows of a better player to see where to count the seconds and minutes to use in Start/Stop, please speak up.

1st time on review forum.

Good to see we have the math figured out for this one trick pony. Yes... 100% faster means "twice as fast" (which I have my own suspicions about)

mp4—>mp3 can be done with so many free apps, even Gio could't possibly list all the free alternatives. And for an mp3 cutter... mp3DirectCut stands out among the free offerings. I'll pass on this $40 app.

I don't currently have any DRM protected files to test this on. However, I am curious as to this program's capability to convert DRM files. Anyone? A giveaway from a while back, Total Audio Converter did not have any success converting .wma files with DRM. However, what I like about the other converter, Total Audio Converter, is that it has a right click context menu ability to convert, and it allows me to combine many mp3s into one. I don't see that functionality here today. In fact, unless I select add folder, I am unable to select multiple files at one time (e.g. shift click or Ctrl+click). Kind of cuts into that "170% speed" increase when you need to put all the files in the same folder, or add them one by one. The free Format Factory (again no success with DRM), still has more functionality than this program as well. Also, for those with the DVD ripping programs from Aiseesoft given away regularly at this site, these rippers have the ability to convert audio files as well, and much more.

After being a regular visitor to GOATD for several years, it's really getting old to see post referring to free software comparable to the offer of the day. I think we all know that freeware is available for most any software you need for any purpose. The purpose of this forum is to evaluate and comment on the software offered. To discuss features or lack thereof. To offer suggestions for improvements. Not to say "hey, here is one for free and here is another one." It is ok to make comparisons to other products. But, to simply criticize a product simply because there is something similar for free somewhere is beyond the intent of user feedback. JMO

Re: No. 6,

Alan,

Assuming you're not pulling our legs, FYI, 100% faster only means twice as fast as before. Being "finished before it began" would be more than infinitely faster. Yes, more than infinitely fast since being done at the same time would be infinitely faster.

To fisch4billf #12,
170% does not mean 2 1/2 faster from a reference point of comparison.
You do not add 70% on top of 100%.
Example if the reference point is 10 seconds and that equals 100% of the time, multiply 10x170 and divide by 100 equals 1.7 times faster than the reference point of 10 seconds.

The % issue is symantics (I think that is the word).
If you talk in 'simple speed' 150% faster means '1.5 times faster'
i.e. 150% of UK motorway sped limit is 105mph.
If you talk in 'simple quantative', 150% larger/greater means '2.5 times'.
But there are more options in mathermatics ...
BUT there are also the use of nowns/verbs/etc. which can swap it to the other system.
So unless you have specific data or a 'good' qualification in both English & Mathermatics, you will never know which is correct.

I always find those multimedia converters/extractors dumb. Here's why.

You may know video files pack 2 streams: video and audio. Usually, in a conversion software, you have to fill a form with output information for the stream, e.g. audio bitrate = 128 k. This is wrong for 2 reasons: i) you have to type the bitrate (and other relevant data), ii) it's impossible to get a better quality than the original stream.

Instead of focusing on the GUI, developers should learn to think. The GUI sells. Thanks to Microsoft, the-guy-with-a-computer-at-home can "become" a "developer".

In the meantime, there's a much better way of doing things. Unfortunately, for some people, this wouldn't appeal to them because it involves the use of the command line. Fortunately for the others, excellent tools exist: mediainfo and ffmpeg. Please note both tools are often packed (almost always outdated versions) with the dumb software previously mentioned.
I'll show you below a way to get things done quickly, efficiently and lazily (!).

Goal: automatically extract audio from video and convert it to MP3 at 128k maximum.

Examples first (warning: double quotes are straight ", not the fancy ones you'll get if you copy/paste the codes below) and finally the batch file.

* RE-index a VMW file (how to pass parameters to a subroutine):

@echo off
set BAD_ASFWMV=M:\vidéos\films\Arte 20101129204219.wmv
call :ffmpeg "%BAD_ASFWMV%"
set BAD_ASFWMV=
goto :EOF
:ffmpeg
ffmpeg.exe -i %1 -vcodec copy -acodec copy -sn "%~n1.reindexed%~x1"

* Get and save audio bit rate from a youtube video:
@echo off
set MM_FILE=Frank Gambale - The Italian Job.flv
mediainfo.exe "--Inform=Audio;%%BitRate%%" "%MM_FILE%" > "_bitrate.txt"
set MM_FILE=

To retrieve the bit rate previously saved:
@echo off
Set /P MI_BITRATE=<_bitrate.txt
echo bitrate: %MI_BITRATE%
set MI_BITRATE=

And now, packaging the whole thing. In this batch, you'll notice an arithmetical operation (line 6). Right after, the conditional instruction uses the fact that the division in batches returns only the integer part.

@echo off
set MM_FILE=Frank Gambale - The Italian Job.flv
mediainfo.exe “–Inform=Audio;%%BitRate%%” “%MM_FILE%” > “_bitrate.txt”
Set /P MI_BITRATE= 128k, in which case we convert down to 128k
set /A IS128=%MI_BITRATE%/128000
if %IS128%==0 (set MI_BITRATE=%MI_BITRATE%) else set MI_BITRATE=128000
call :ffmpeg %MI_BITRATE% "%MM_FILE%"
rem Cleaning
set MI_BITRATE=
set IS128=
set MM_FILE=
del /q _bitrate.txt > nul
goto :EOF
:ffmpeg
rem frequency is automatically taken from source
ffmpeg -i "%2" -vn -ac 2 -ab %1 -f mp3 "%~n2.mp3"

Et voilà: Fully automated conversion (freeware, lol).

Compare the size of these lines with todays's GOTD: 10 MB compressed (why so much? does it include ffmpeg?)... and 40 bucks!

Homework: rewrite this little thing to process all or selected files within a folder and save the resulting MP3s in another folder.

Nevertheless, writing batch files doesn't prevent me from using a freeware like yamb for my MP4s sometimes.

Computers could help people better. They are intrinsecally stupid machines. But they are badly utilized because too many times they require a human presence even when it is not necessary.

The % issue is symantics (I think that is the word).
Depending on the wording, 50% faster means speed is '1.5 times faster'
QED 150% = 2.5 times faster.
But if you talk in quantificaton (e.g. duration), then 100% means '1.0'. i.e. 150% of UK motorway speed limit = 105mph = '1.5'
BUT then nowns/verbs/etc. come in, which can make the meaning swap to the other system.
So for simplicity, unless you have a degree in English & Mathermatics, or they actually supply specific data, no one knows exactly which is the correct ratio to be applied.

Once you start to convert a file or folder, there is no way to stop it until the whole process finishes, which may take hours if you have made a mistake or converting a wrong folder.
I had to use Ctrl-Alt-Del to stop it, but that made few files corrupted and made the converted files unreadable.
The speed is otherwise OK compared to the free converters.
Uninstalled.

Installed & seemed to run okay. After the file download, a pop up asked if I wanted to register; otherwise it gives only 50% of the conversion. I reread the instructions here on Giveaway; it says to unzip the file and read the readme file for installation instructions. This download file is not a zipped file nor does it have a readme file in the installed directory. I'm now uninstalling the program; I have already spent way too much time on this for a program that claims to work wonders in 3 clicks.

Funny how these things work out. I had some Flac files I needed to convert to MP3. Used one one of the Freeware alternatives and while I was waiting for that to finish checked what Giveaway of the Day was offering today. Used this program to finish what I was doing. It's faster and has more conversion options than my freeware alternative.. Boxsoft.... MP4 To MP3 Converter is a keeper for me.

Why advertise it as an MP4 converter when is also supports AVI, MPG, FLV, WMV, MOV?

Seems to undercut it's supposed use by advertising the main headline as for a single format.

Not the best marketing strategy.

I think you r bang right with your interpretation
But, i think the developer means that u can finish a process in 59 secs if it originally took 100 secs to finish. That is the conversion process will take almost half the time of what it originally took.

@Alan - no, 100% faster does not mean it takes no time at all. It means that instead of getting 100% of the process done in the original amount of time, now an additional 100% is done in the original amount of time. In other words, 100% faster is twice as fast, therefore 170% faster would be more than 2½ times faster.

#6 Alan - you mixed something. 100% faster means as fast as + 100%. ONE thing can't be more of itself without changing it or its attributes, but compared to something else it can take more or less space, as example.

I like the idea of extracting MP3 from MP4, but what about converting MP3 to MP4? Here is the tool, RealA2V: http://realware.webs.com/reala2v/index.htm

Simple review : Many users download You Tube videos. This allows them to Extract the audio and save it as an mp3,wma,ogg,wav,flac,ac3 or aac format. It can be used to extract the audio from MOST video files besides MP4 videos. It can extract the audio from flv and most other video formats. It allows you to choose bitrate - up to 320 kps and up to 48000 Hz. The sound it also very good. Sure it is possible to use other all-in-one freeware converters that take up the whole screen and are about 30 to 40 megabytes in size. But I do a LOT of converting and desired something small and simple for extracting ONLY audio. This is only 10 megabytes and I like it. I was using Pazera Free Audio Extractor but it has not been updated since December 2010. I already have converters that give me 100 options but just wanted one small and simple.

Nice and easy install. The registration key is included in the readme file. The program is very easy to use with all of the needed option readily available. The site claims it is 170% faster than other converters. that was not really true in my case but it was fairly fast and with it's ease of use I would say it is a great find for those that need this type of program. Thank you to the publisher, PDFZilla.com, for your offer and to the GAOTD team for all you do for us.
