Windows explorer on my vista home o/s began mysteriously crashing whenever I tried to use it. After diagnosing when the crashes began, I traced it to the install of this program. Uninstalled it and windows explorer now works fine. Maybe an isolated problem for me only, but if you are having problems with windows explorer after installing this it might be the reason.

I liked the program but found it contained the file shellext.dll which
conflicted with windows explorer in xp pro. Fortunately it was easy to uninstall. Shellext.dll was present in my download was it a virus or part of the program?

Many thanks for your comments, which are very helpful and reassuring. I made note of Carol's suggestion (#46), just in case I need to use it in the future.

I really appreciate your response, and hope that the developers correct this bug - sooner, than later!

#95, Suze, it would appear that Media Resizer Pro's shell extension doesn't crash all computers, although clearly the code is incorrect, and others have noted crashes under different circumstances. As long as you don't need it, the defective shell extension isn't that big a deal; Media Resizer Pro itself works, and doesn't require the shell extension. If you find that the shell extension does cause Explorer to crash at some point, you can simply rename or remove it, as Carol suggested (easier and more certain than mucking with the Registry). The next time you upgrade your ATI drivers, they'll probably replace the Registry entries for Media Resizer Pro's shell extension, but that won't affect Media Resizer Pro itself.

#97, E-L-T, since the Media Resizer Pro giveaway has separate Activate and Setup routines, if you still have the .zip file, you can try running Setup again. Some programs leave their registration entries when they are uninstalled, some remove them.

I also had the same right click problem. I restored my computer back to before the install and the problem is gone. This was the only new program I had installed and had the problem right after installing this 'freebie'. It looks to be a nice little program but I really do need to be able to right click! LOL

To #79 Fubar:

Although I had not rebooted my system before right-clicking on an empty area of the desktop the first time I did it, I've since rebooted with the same results: Windows Explorer did not crash.

Taking your suggestion, I then right-clicked on an image file type supported by Media Resizer Pro in Windows Explorer, and “Process with Media Resizer Pro” showed up in the drop-down menu of several types of images.

I also took a peek in my Registry, and saw the exact {new} code lines that you indicated. I don't know what the {old} code lines were, as I didn't know to check them. I'm sure they were ATI-related, since I have C:Program Files > ATI Technologies > ATI Control Panel in my system.

I don't know what to think at this point . . .

Turn your computer off. Then make a 'cold' restart.
Now you should be able to remove the folder manually.

There is a nice free program called 'Revo Uninstaller'

I share your opinion on the confusing terminology.
And it is an unusual way to 'register'.But it is necessary to remove limitations from trial versions and demos.
As for being counterproductive?I am not sure about that...
For a lot of companies a GAOTD means a salesboost since people get a taste of there programs.Same people that probably never would have heard about the company otherwise.

HELP!!! I am trying to uninstall this, and I cannot do it completely. The uninstaller, when finished, says there is stuff that I "must remove manually." I went into Program Files and tried to delete the folder - it WON'T LET ME. It says that I need permissions. I am logged on as Administrator (and I am the only one using this computer), whose permissions do I need???

I tried looking at editing permissions by using Properties, but I don't know anything about that and I couldn't change anything anyways (all grayed out.

Control Panel uninstall does not include the program anymore.

HELP me REMOVE this program! Thanks!

There are 3 files left. I am running Windows Vista Home Premium. Arghhh...Any help or advice?

Does a great good and quick job of resizing pics! However, I tried to see if there was a setting for automating the process of taking screen captures from videos and could not find anything. Is this program able to do this in a quicker way and if so how do I go about it? If it can't do it would anyone out there have any suggestions on a freeware or open-source program that can extract screen captures from video in an automated way by frames or time? Other than screen captures this program has worked great for me. Thanks GAOTD!!!

Thanks,
Larry

#75 Technically it is not available in your OS from the start, you did have to install it.
I am a great fan of powertoys myself, great software.

And about crashing right-click, it will only happen if you have ATI graphics card.

Running XPSP2, it also repeatedly crashed for me, but was OK after I rebooted. I suspect a firewall or virus scanner problem related to the CotD page that comes up after installation.

@72--didn't "register" generally mean voluntarily giving your name and other information to the publisher so they can send you info re updates, upgrades and other stuff (e.g., Microsoft)? Now GAOTD is apparently using it instead to refer to mere "activation," which is simply plugging in the product key in some form or fashion (a/k/a "validation" or "authorization" in some quarters, I believe). While registration has been generally been viewed as optional, the others are usually considered mandatory in order to use the product legally. It seems to me that the confusing terminology being used by GAOTD is unnecessary and counterproductive, since we give no personal info.

Recently we were offered Extreme Thumbnail Generator as a free program from GAOTD, and I installed it. Has anyone had the opportunity to test that program and this program, and would you care to comment on which program you consider better, and why? If this program works better I will install it instead of extreme thumbnail generator. I only hesitate to install this program because my hard drive is almost full (many of the programs are from GAOTD - lol)

Thanks GAOTD. As many others have said, the program processes images fast, the GUI (Graphical User Interface) is slick and very user friendly in the terms most users have basic photo editing skills.

If you have issues with the text being outside the image, adjust the font and/or size to suit. Better still the program allows resetting of the text box margins and dragging the text box whereever best situated.

Last comment I wish to make upon experience, This program would be best suited in a Windows XP environment as Vista still has many bugs yet to be ironed out.

I'm interested in feature that resizes video, but I'm hesitant to download and install it if it's just works the same as the feature in pinnacle studio (because I already have it). Studio allows you to make a couple types of video files for use in ipods and websites (real player and wmf). Is that what this does or is it some new kind of miniture avi file?

Some people like to have the option of not cluttering up their Start menu. I happen to be one of those people, actually. I just access less-frequently used programs from Windows Explorer, keeping my desktop and Start menu free of applications that I rarely use.

To those who claim that right-clicking on an empty area of the desktop doesn't crash their Windows Explorer--have you rebooted your computer yet? Another possibility is a DLL registration problem. Media Resizer Pro should be using a unique name for their shell extension DLL, but they don't. Your computer may be using another DLL. In Windows Explorer, right-click on an image file type supported by Media Resizer Pro. If something like "Process with Media Resizer Pro" (I'm not sure of the exact wording since I disabled the offending DLL on my system) doesn't show up, then your computer isn't using Media Resizer Pro's shell extension. It's possible that Media Resizer Pro's shell extension doesn't crash some computers' Windows Explorer, but I doubt it. I don't really care if you think that I'm a two-year-old with a gaping hole in my skull, but unlike many who post here, I never make unfounded accusations of problems caused by GOTD offerings. Not just GOTD offerings, but most software installations in general, do some Registry damage. I only bother to mention it if the damage is unusually severe. Here's the damage trace from installing this version of Media Resizer Pro on my computer:

To #64 Fubar: I've always gotten good information from your comments, so please continue :)

I downloaded and installed Media Resizer PRO earlier today. After I read your, and others', comments, I've right-clicked on an empty area of my desktop a few times to see if Windows Explorer would crash. It has not (knock-wood). My system is Windows XP SP2 Home.

#63 I appreciate your comment, but I can assure you it is Media Resizer Pro that causes my windows explorer to crash to the point of having to 'bomb' out and restart the computer, and that it is not a problem with my computer. The problem had never occured before installing this program, and ceased when it was uninstalled.

#64 I too hope people take heed of these comments, otherwise someway down the line they are going to wonder why/what is causing their computers to crash, and, as I mentioned before, there is a simple solution to stop it happening.

#46, Carol, I hope people pay attention to your comment.

I never know what to make of the irrational responses to my comments. A bunch of people have voted my comment #11 down. By voting my comment down, do you somehow think that will make the registry damage that Media Resizer Pro does disappear? Do you think that you're somehow "hurting" me ("I'll show that Fubar guy, I'll give him the old thumbs-down!")? Or perhaps you're upset because you actually believe that Bill Gates is the world's greatest programmer (it's trivially easy to illustrate that no one at Microsoft knows anything about computers or software engineering)? Now, you may not care that Media Resizer Pro damages Registry entries belonging to another program (ATI Catalyst Control Center), and eliminating the Catalyst Control Center's menu insertion into Windows Explorer's context menu is no great loss, but the fact that Media Resizer Pro overwrites other program's registry entries is clearly an indication of incorrect coding. What I wrote was correct, Media Resizer Pro's shell extension was and is incorrectly installed. All you have to do is right-click on an empty area of your desktop, and Windows Explorer will crash.

#11 #12 # 46 if you keep crashing just by right clicking on the desktop then you've got computer issues that this program isn't causing. As for the review by Bladedthoth, I think it falls far short of reality. I found this program to be very fast at converting images (Which is its main function), and a watermark option that is quick and easy. #38 Your review of this program shows that you didn't do your homework, but prefered to use anothers. For a freebie this program is up to par with just about any other out there within its parameters. I'll add it to my "Coolection",and that's a capital C on Cool.
