@Chris Locke: Check "Easy RoboCopy" (http://www.tribblesoft.com/Pages/EasyRoboCopy.aspx) - a user-friendly front end to Robocopy. The very good point is that it shows you the actual command line used, so you can just copy it to your script.
It did not handle well exit codes (sometimes reporting problems even if everything went well), but I've just noticed there is a new version, so maybe it got fixed.

@ #20 Mikechang. The answer is easy. Use another built-in utility, Windows Backup, to protect those files. I can't believe you missed that considering you have answers for everyone who doesn't seem to like the software. If used correctly, you can already backup and have access to all you files over a network on various computers without syncing software. If you need to travel, just copy and paste the files you need from the networked folder onto the hard drive of the mobile computer. The time you spend doing that may be the same or even less than the time spent using syncing software.

@21 DD, Yes FreeFileSync can be configured. The default is file size and date, but you can opt for file content comparison. I use it all the time to sync files to Dropbox so that I can transfer files between my laptop and desktop at home or work, thus saving bandwidth, an issue because I live in a rural area.

BeyondCompare Pro (which includes folder options) is the only tool I will trust with these kind of operations. After reading all the comments here, I see no reason to change, not even for free. I rely on that backup working every time, 100%, unconditionally. And I work in a field where even one file loss is devastating.

Otherwise, can you really call it a backup? If this is more expensive than BC Pro, how come? All I'm reading is that subfolders are made, not actual syncs. Is it so afraid to do destructive operations that it loses its effectiveness? Go bold! Or go home...

@Giovanni: Thank you for being here. And thank you for your comments re: "So once again I can’t figure out why it got a very poor user rating so far (GAOTD team please: do something to fix your misleading USERS’ RATING SYSTEM or everything here will go to the dogs)." DITTO FROM ME. I never even look at the rating - it is MEANINGLESS. I find your post and start from there.

That having been said, the VOSIbiz software you suggested today is only a free TRIAL. I could find nowhere on the website that told me when the TRIAL is up, and what happens if I don't care to purchase, but still need access to files I have "moved or backed up" using their program TRIAL. Could you help me out here?

Thanks GOTD to the program of the day. I felt that I needed to speak "DOS" again to do anything with it. I would say that this program should be used by people much more skilled than I am.

X1 X2
seems that ( source ) is where you check off multiple folders you would like to keep in sync... that is.... check off X1 & X2 here....
then select as target... a folder you name.. lets say ... Synced...
at first run it copies folders X1 and X2 as subs to your Synced folder..
if you delete or add files / folders to either X1 or X2...
on next run it will replicate changes in X1 and X2 in target folder Synced......
if data removed or added in target Synced sub folders X1 and X2 .... it will add data to the source folders... and will recover the data deleted in the Synced folders from the source folders.... and place it back once again into the target folder...
I can see the value in this....
I had a bad feeling I should spend more time with it before commenting this morning... but had to run....
But..... I'm not finding any drop down rule change lists where I can select what to do in respective sync folders with data addition and deletion etc... as you find with other Synchronization software
still... as is... this program creates a safety net against accidental deletions....
unless you simultaneously intentionally delete data from both the source and Synced folders... the data will be replaced on next run back into the folder from which deleted... be it the source... or from the ( copy ) target folder structure....
seems fast... useful as far as sync...
didn't try backup features....

I have Folder A with files whose content gets edited from time to time and Folder B with files that are either kept, added to or deleted from time to time but never modified. Will today's GOTD sync both kinds of files using the same exact settings and set to run automatically? I'm looking for a backup/sync program that does not require further action besides maybe choosing the right settings in the first place. Anyone?

Sure, there are plenty other syncro programs, but @Max SyncUp can syncronize via FTP. I haven't found this option in others. Will be very handy to update our website. Having to going into each subdirectory individually to upload new files via FTP program is very time-consuming. I couldn't figure out the FTP part at first, but I watched the Youtube:
"@MAX SyncUp: How to compare and synchronize two folders"
and it's really easy.
I really like this program.
