A little late on the commentary, but I just had the chance to try out this software.
While it is a fun software that makes some cool collages, the memory management is just terrible. I've gotten multiple "unhandled exceptions" due to being "out of memory" on a brand new quad-core with a boatload of RAM, etc. Totally unacceptable for an application to require so much memory, or not to use it correctly.
Disappointing, for sure.

As before if you've MS Word on your computer, you can copy and paste images straight into it, even directly from an image file. You will need to format text wrapping to 'behind text' for each picture to move the pictures. With Word 2007 go to Word Options (bottom of start button menu) select adavanced and set under cut copy and paste 'insert picture' to 'behind text'! No need then to set text wrapping individually for each picture! Resize pictures by corner tags to avoid distortion. To conserve memory, preferably roughly resize pictures before pasting into Word.

If you haven't got Word or prefer a simple approach then today's GOTD is a great collage maker!

Due to time constraints that today's society places on me (And most of us!) it's been awhile since I've been to GOTD, I've missed it! Now after installing this program, I've really missed it! I can only imagine what other goodies I've missed over the past few months.

When I first came here today I thought that I would never really need that and I am probably right, but it sure is neat to have it! Do I need any of the plethora of graphics apps that gluttonously suck up my hard drive? Nope, but they sure do make the computer fun! This one is fun and it takes such a small amount of space that it's a real winner IMHO.

I've already started on my first collage and find the program is nice and easy to use. A nice break from Photoshop where I actually have to use my mind to what sometimes becomes an uncomfortable extent--read, Photoshop can sometimes make my brain hurt! The ease of use coupled with the speed that this program does it's thing makes me realize that there is some real programming code under the hood. Try making a collage and slapping 1500 images inside a path in Photoshop and prepare for a long wait, Magic Collage does it in mere seconds. I've yet to print out a collage but I suspect that the printed output is going to be on par with the on screen output because the programmer(s) of this program seem like they care. The most impressive thing so far is the size of the program and it's speed. It reminds me of the old ASM days when programs spoke with computers!

This is one DOTD that I would not want to miss, grab it and install it before it's too late!

Downloaded and installed using MS7 Ultimate without any probs. Reg was automatic. Created a collage of 89 pictures and it turned out just fine. I have so many pics that this will be an easy and fun way for my family to enjoy. It would be nice to have had a greater range of shapes, if we can add it, then I didn't see it, if it is already there, then great. I didn't encouter any problems with RAM usage, bloat, was just pure fun. Something that is this easy my 4 y/o grand daughter could use.

Have tried this once some time ago. Have tried it right now, has no new features, has the same limitations, is still useless.
Cannot create any good mosaic due it says "out of memory, try with smaller immage or less images... "
I am using Andrea Mosaic doing the same job in the same computer and it works fine.
Thumbs down for Magic Collage.

I forgot to add that I found out by accident that you don't need to use one of their pre-selected output shapes - you can create your own by using any graphic (or even a photo) you have.

Installed perfectly on my Win 7 64-bit machine; registered flawlessly using the registration code supplied in the readme. It is VERY easy to use! Intuitive interface. Output also saved easily. I couldn't be more pleased! Thanks so much, GAOTD!

to #24 (Rafdaddy) regarding Failed to connect to the Internet message

This was posted by moderator graylox to the forums regarding a similar problem:

Please check if your IE is online, even when you don't use it as your browser. The GOTD activation process needs IE.

The program is wonderful, BUT after creating about 10 collages it puts the watermark across the middle of the entire collage, instead of at the bottom only, ruining it. This renders this program useless unless you upgrade, which also makes it not very appealing when there are plenty of truly free programs that do the same job. Not happy with this. Uninstalling.

Don't know whats going on with GAOTD lately but every time I download an offering and try to install I am getting the "Failed to connect to the Internet message. What's going on? I have been using the site for years and now with Vista. It will be disappointing to loose it.

What is the difference between this program & the previous Picture Collage Maker Pro we got in a earlier GOTD?
Before I load another program I will wait to see if anyone prefers one over the other.
Thank YOu GOTD

While attempting to export a collage of roughly 100 jpg images using the heart template, Magic Collage easily used upwards 1.8 GB of ram and five minutes later still no collage. On a positive note, processor usage was very low. Given the images used were all very high res (4000x3000+) the ram usage can probably be excused.

However, the infamous .NET Unhandled Exception errors grew tiresome after a while. So far, Magic Collage has failed to perform at an acceptable level. With some work and a bit of polish, it would make for a nice novelty application.

Love the freebie version for Mac. Disappointed that the give-away is only for Windows but kudos for such a generous offer. Will let my lucky PC friends know about it. ;-)

This is a small [1MB], *Very* orange app with a non-resizable window that doesn't handle oversized/enlarged fonts well in win7. Installation checks for & requires .NET 2, & registration is tied to a hardware ID -- changing something like a hard drive would probably cancel or invalidate registration. It uses the Windows Installer, which adds a bunch of registry entries & a few files to the Windows' Installer folder [IMHO more-or-less useless when you have 25 small .png templates (~112KB) in one folder, the 1MB .exe [program file] in another, & no registry entries needed... something the 7zip installer & similar could handle more efficiently with far less bloat]. In addition to what folks have written today, you can read prior comments for v. 1.1 here: [giveawayoftheday.com/magic-collage/]

This is one of the few programs that I have downloaded and actually kept (I have been using it since the first time there gave it away here at GAOTD).

It is easy to use, stable and just plain fun!

@Inas: Andrea Mosaic isn't really a substitute: photomosaics aren't collages.

Downloaded, no problem. Installed on Vista X64, no problem. Ran, registered, no problem. Created my own quick 'design', tools for that are a little limited, but, I got what I wanted. Picked 9 or so pics at random, opened, created, saved as JPG, looked just fine to me.

Definitely a paste-up collage effect, as expected, but as someone else mentioned, definitely not something I'd use every day, or even every m onth. If it's an effect you're looking for, to add to your designer profile, and you can't find it anywhere else, it's definitely a timesaver.

The help is rather skimpy; though the Graphic Library Manager is functional, I'd really rather know where the shape files are stored, without having to search my HD for them. As well, being able to resize the app to not seem so puny on my monitor would make it nicer to use. :)

Options for controlling the output are nice, didn't see anything I'd want in particular that isn't there. Speed and responsiveness of the collage to the changes is good. Would be nice to be able to save settings as a preset (including the shape), so a given set can be easily retrieved.

Definitely worth grabbing if you think you'll ever have a need for this sort of thing.

fun software but needs a bulk delete option. I added several folders of pictures and then realized that one of the folders was from a different trip and I had to delete each picture by hand

#6, Greg if there isn't a button labelled Register to the left of the button labelled Help Topics at the top right of the program window, then your program is registered.

Downloaded, installed, and activated fine on Vista x32. Simple, intuitive interface. Program is very easy to use - I created a collage of 50 pics, and applied selected edits, in about 5 minutes. Definitely a nice addition to my photo-editing software arsenal. Two-thumbs-up, and a big thanks to GOTD and Pixel-App Studio.

Does anyone know the differences between Magic Collage Version 2.1 offered here last time and this more current Version 2.3?

To install Version 2.3 is it necessary to uninstall the previous version or can this be installed over it?

Not something I'd use at 26.95, when there are so many free collage makers out there.
Personally this caters to a limited crowd. i.e. Someone in a family wanting to put family pics in one collage. Or a student or child wanting a collage of friends.
This is not an everyday program either, which is why $26.95 is steep.
This is a program you use once or twice a year.
I truthfully can't see anyone making a collage once a week.
Maybe once a month if you're really into it. But most collage builders use it 2 or 3 times and forget about it.
If I were going to charge $9.99 tops.
But I'm not selling it, so it's just my opinion and I wish the coders very good luck in selling their product.

And thank you GAOTD for offering us this fine piece of software.

The Good
* Straightforward and easy to use.
* Users can create picture collages based on shapes modeled after graphics or text.
* As a model for the collage, users can use a handful of graphics that come with the program or draw/import their own.
* There are various different settings for collages which can be controlled by the user, such as individual picture size, amount of pictures used, picture shadow, collage background color, etc.
* Users can view a "live preview" of the collage as they create it.
* Can output collages as PSD, in addition to JPG and PNG.

The Bad
* Extremely memory inefficient.
* Lacks support for other popular image formats like GIF and BMP when outputting collages.
* Program window is not resizeable.
