This may work fine for Blu-Ray, I couldn't test that, but for any other video or audio format this is virtually useless compared to VLC or other players because there are NO VIDEO OR AUDIO SETTINGS in this Blu-ray player.

You cannot adjust video brightness, contrast, hue, gamma, nor anything else related to video except for screen size, aspect ratio, deinterlace and track.

For Audio, you only have; Track, Audio Channel and Device, no other settings, no equalizer.

VLC player on the other hand is the most professional and advanced free video player available, with a huge array of advanced user settings when needed- you can even sync audio and video when those are out of sync. The audio settings are also 'advanced' if you chose the advanced settings view.

This Blu-ray Player does play other formats just fine BUT WITH NO SETTINGS available to you, so if your video file is too dark for example you can't adjust it in any way - no way to adjust for variations in color, brightness, etc.

I don't what the developers were thinking by even including these other formats in the player because they are quite useless without any settings available. the website claims: 'It can support any format of movie, video, audio, music and photo.' I think that is VERY MISLEADING to a potential buyer of this software, and at that price?? This borders on a SCAM in my view because it is luring purchasers by leading them to think that this player is versatile and good for numerous other formats when it is NOT.

The 'Help' file from the menu or from 'F1' for 'Help' does not produce anything- no help file or url opens.

In view of these findings I give this Blu-Ray player 4X Thumbs Down! That is like 4 negative stars. The only 'plus' (one star) is that according to other reviews it does play Blu-Ray.

To the company: I am surprised that you have been allowed to call this "Mac Blu-Ray Player". The company with the "Mac" trademark will not be amused. I suggest that you come up with an alternate name and have it ready.

The program looks very good, thank you.

OK for me the player will NOT work without AnyDVD HD. This is due to the fact my monitor is not HDCP compatible. So if you have any non compliant hardware it will not play BD movies.

Once I enabled AnyDVD HD, it removes all the limitations imposed on us by the media company idiots and plays my bought BD movies fine. I cannot test how it would work with the extras like if it is BDLive 2.0 compatible because no matter what I cannot use those features unless I buy a new monitor and that's not happening till I need a new one.

So remember it may not work for you even if all your equipment is capable of it because of the DRM imposed onto the software player. Also note that since there are no updates, it is very possible that it will stop working on new BD discs because of new keys or the current player key being blacklisted. These are not the fault of Macgo or the player, it is absolutely the fault of the BD consortium for their idiotic DRM policies.

Is it possible to see only the movie and not the controls on the bottom of the screen when in full screen mode?

I installed it under Windows 7 and it won't even run for me. Oh well, VLC works fine, so today is another useless program as far as I'm concerned.

Downloaded and installed in a notebook Dell XPS 15 (i5 with 8GB RAM, BD player and video card GT525M with 1 GB). I tried the options in the menu and I observed the "check for updates" did not work. Mac player plays BD but not smoothly. I have installed in my notebook today the PowerDVD 11 and Mac player is uncomparably worse. When I tried the full screen option Mac player starts freezing the playing several times. I will try it with other BD disks but probably I will unstall it. It is not a keep.
Thanks GAOTD.

Very bugg in playing full-featured movies from a folder. Maybe it does great with Blue-Ray, but it really is lacking for standard movie viewing.

Ok, more messing around shows that the macplayer WILL play both DVD and BD file structures (e.g., folders, not ISO) saved on hard discs. Curiously, it doesn't pick up the IFO or BDMV menu, but constructs one on the fly. All the necessary controls are there, however, so it is functional.

The menu format is also similar for physical discs, meaning the original BD/DVD disc's movie menu format is replaced with something created by Macplayer. Curious programming, again, but it does seem to get the relevant info you need to play and skip around.

It works great on a 6core amd CPU running at 2.8 with 8gig of ram and evga 550ti
but will only play DVD smoothly on a amd quad core at 2.2 gig 3gig of ram and asus 5830 video card.
Even after upping the program possess to above normal, higher and real time, no effect.
I removed the USB blue ray drive that was on the slower system and
it played the blue ray disk with no issue on the faster system.
So it seams the specs for the player are not quite accurate.
Also the same issue occurs when playing a video file in anything other
then standard 720x480

I agree with #35 Giovanni, that you can have an even better solution watching mkv files for free. Just set Media Player Home Cinema to hardware accelleration and a few other improvements. There are lots of tutorials out there for the job. However, this giveaway is quite decent for us having an ekstern bluray device. I use a LaCie eksternal, and I compared with PowerDVD from Cyberlink vers. 11 - and compared to the price, today's offer is quite satisfying. By the way....thanks to Giovanni for sharing a lot of gems and for bringing good vibes..!
And again thanks to the team behind GAOTD and to MacGo for a generous giveaway. It's a keeper for my laptop for sure.

Did some quick tests of playability - couple of things of note. Does play blu-ray ISO files on disk with full menu support. However, puts heavy stress on CPU. A BD iso took about 65-70 percent of 4 cores to play; a mkv of a blu-ray transcode required about 30-40 percent of CPU cycles. This tends to indicate it hasn't been programmed to offload heavy lifting to the GPU on the graphics card.

Also, among the alternative players people have been citing, no one seems to have listed the only program I know that can play a blu-ray file structure on hard disc with full menu support - Arcsoft Total Media Theater 5. Not cheap and seldom discounted, but indispensable if like me you're storing BDs on disc rather than burning them.

One thing I didn't test on this player is whether it passes through 5.1 or 7.1 sound, of interest to those of us with home theater setups.

I have downloaded and tested this program and it is good one thing I didn't like about it, is that it went to full screen automatactly when I opened a file but I think you can edit that. But besides that I like the program.

I was pleased to see this offer. My Gateway came with a Blu-ray player but would never play a Blu-ray. Gateway said the player that came with my computer was a trial and no amount of questioning gave me any help. I first put in Descendents and it would not play. But the next few worked fine.

I realy miss the eject button as the drive door on my laptop broke off and I have to go to the Windows Explorer file section to eject discs.

Loaded it on a Window 7 64-bit system with a Core2 Quad 2.66gHz with an external eSATA connected BD-RW player. Player seemed to work OK except for some stuttering.

For example, I played Avatar (was the closest Blu-ray at hand) and the part where he first links to the avatar body, and he's outside running, stutters like mad and the stuttering doesn't clear up till after he meets up with the Avatar project head. This stuttering happens 100% of the time in this part of the movie, and is just one of many parts of the movie that stutters. And Avatar isn't the only Blu-ray that there are problems with.

After trying various things like rebooting, raising the priority of both the player and it's behind the scenes support software (Raytooth.exe), etc, the stuttering never went away. I did notice that there is very high network activity while playing a Blu-ray (using Win7 Resource Manager) and at the point when it starts to stutter the network activity raises approx 10% over it's previous average. However the CPU activity shows no subsequent increase in activity and raising the priority doesn't have an impact. As a side note, it uses all 4 cores.

I does seem to play DVDs without an issue, haven't tried other media types yet since my main interest in this was the Blu-ray playback support. While I'm disappointed that there are problems with the Blu-ray playback, I may keep it for it's other uses.

Installed and worked well although takes a long time (up to a minute) to start, while recognizing the disc (I only have a DVD drive, so no BLU test here).

There's a HELP item in the drop menus (and it also references F1), but no HELP is included in the software. It does nothing. FAQ's on the web site are fairly complete, however.

The website exhibits the same broken English patterns that appear in the glowing and detailed reports here today. Do the math, they are posted by the maker posing as a customer. Deceit is apparently considered ethical in other countries. In the USA, that's only OK in politics and sports.

this player does NOT play my original "despicable me" blu-ray disk in win7pro64, however, with untouched BD ISO, it works fine. with disk, it hangs up. duh!

and, how in the world it works in mac OSX when a mac does NOT have blu-ray disk drive and OSX does NOT support blu-ray either? i don't have a mac, otherwise, i could have tested it.

@Mags
i have VLC 2.0.1 portable and it gave me the following error when i opened my original "despicable me" blu-ray disk in win7pro64:
This Blu-Ray Disk needs a library for AACS decoding, and your system does not have it.
bottomline: i can not rely on VLC to play BD and BD ISO. VLC is only good on DVDs and all kinds of files saved in hard disk like MKV, AVI, WMV, MOV, etc. VLC failed on untouched BD ISO file, too.

@giovanni
DAP does not play my original "despicable me" blu-ray disk in win7pro64, got this message:
Unable to open this Blu-Ray.
bottomline: i can not rely on DAP to play BD and BD ISO. DAP is only good on DVDs and all different files saved in hard disk like MKV, AVI, WMV, MOV, etc. DAP failed on untouched BD ISO file, too.

i have tried surodev as my laptop is having active 3D display. it does NOT work.

FYI, this BD (and other BDs/3D BDs) successfully plays in roxio cine player and powerDVD10 in win7pro64.

trust me friends, i have tried (and am still trying) many players that could possibly play BDs and 3D BDs and their untouched ISOs, and full-SBS, half-SBS, half-OU 3D files! i have got the best results so far with powerDVD10. powerDVD10 can play BDs and 3D BDs and their untouched ISOs (through virtual clone drive), and half-OU 3D files but failed on full-SBS. i posted the problem in their forum, and they say they support full-SBS in powerDVD12 only (can't verify as i don't have it!).

media players that failed to play a physical blu-ray disk:
VLC, DAP (and, i am more or less sure now that KMP, MPC-HC, splayer, etc will fail, too)

media players that failed to play a physical 3D blu-ray disk in "3D" mode:
VLC, DAP, TMT5, nvidia stereoscopic player, sview player, 3Dtvdotat stereoscopic player

If you're strictly using the English version, you can delete the locales directory

Keep your registration key as they have included a setup.exe file in the E:\Program Files (x86)\MacGo\Mac Blu-ray Player\setup directory

The uninstaller leaves behind the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\MacGo key and the C:\Program Files (x86)\MacGo\Mac Blu-ray Player directory with folders underneath it.

You need to restart or use IObit Unlocker (http://www.iobit.com/download.html) to delete the directories.

Ridiculously awesome!
Installed on my laptop, got out my newly traded on DVD for Blu-ray Dances with Wolves from Bestbuy. Cloned the Blu-ray an ISO file. Pointed this program to the ISO and after a little firewall popup for "raytooth.exe", wola full screen blu-ray with menus. I've never had a proper working Blu-ray software before and this program is the best I've tried so far, and Free thanks to Give Away of The Day.

Nice player, nicely clean interface and good performance.

I tested 3 different BluRays movies. It looks like you need an internet connection do decrypt/play the disc. After decrypting a title, it remember the key next time and an internet connection is not needed.

the player should be able to play a BluRay movie, even if you don't have a BluRay drive...

...You just need an ISO of the movie ;o)

I downloaded and then loaded the title. Went through the usual install stuff. The Splash screen loaded. I stuck my disc in to the "Blu-ray" ROM and it asked me to wait so that it could read the disc and then I got a about 1.5 seconds of image and sound followed by for total freeze that only stopped when I closed the program.
Why is it I can't find any software to rum one of my 2 Blu-ray burners????
Every tine I put a disc in this happens. The Cyberlink advisory tool checks my system and I get green light across the board. But still NO software will run on my system with out freezing, jutting, stammering, and and locking up. Core i7 2.44 CPU, Two (2)460 Graphics cards and 24 gigs of ram and I still can't get the sucker to play a Blu-ray.
Mac Blu-Ray Player, is just the latest in a long line of disappointments.

Works for me! (VLC did not... at least not without tweaking)

Some Facts / Details:
My system: A tower unit with internally mounted SATA Blu-Ray Multi-Burner / Player running Win 7 64Bit. (FYI: The manufacturers website seems to imply the software is to be used with a external USB Blu-Ray player but it works with both internal or external Blu-Ray players on both Macs and PC's)

NOTE: This software "will not" allow you to play a Blu-Ray discs in a standard DVD player. You must have a Blu-Ray player (internal or external) to play Blu-Ray discs.

My personal findings:
1) With "no" Blu-Ray software of any kind loaded on my PC I inserted a new Blu-Ray movie disc / movie.
2) Media Player attempted to play it and failed. "Cannot play the file"
3) I then downloaded and installed VLC 2.0.1 (todays most current version) and attempted to play the Blu-Ray. It failed: Received the message: your input can't be opened: VLC is unable to open the MRL 'dvd:///H:\'. Check the log for details.
4) I then downloaded, installed and registered todays GAOTH. It Worked! No problems, no issues, no errors. The Blu-ray movie played perfected. All the Blu-Ray menu, chapters and bonus items were available.
For all you VLC fans... Although the current VLC version failed, I was eventually able to make it work and play a Blu-Ray after some internet research, trial and error. NET: You "can" make it work "if" you are willing to Google the various forums and blogs, find the necessary dll based on your specific Win operating system (32bit versus 64bit) and place it in the correct directory. (Hint: check VideoLan forum for details)

Bottom line, you can spend an hour or so downloading and tweaking VLC or you can simply download todays GAOTD and be up and running in minutes. This one is a keeper!

Blu-ray Player

Pros: plays almost any media type including FLV and that very well
(no glitches or flickering)

Cons: Audio playback is severe and unacceptable
(an equalizer would be appropriate - why is something like that not implemented?)

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

Works great with Windows 7 and an external Blu-Ray ROM Drive.

I just got an external Blu-Ray ROM Drive from TigerDirect. It was $20 after rebate, but did not come with any software. So this simple (bloat-free) player is exactly what I needed.

Be sure to register it for every user ID on your computer before the free registration period expires. I registered it when it auto-launched after installation, but that only registered it for use with the admin ID. I had to register it a second time to activate it under my standard user ID.

There are no free blu-ray players for windows that actually work well. I know this because I looked for one for weeks before finally giving in and spending the money for Power DVD, which cost at least as much as this program does. VLC media player does not play Blu-ray discs unless that feature was added recently. The only free Blu-ray play I could find was DAPlayer, which kept crashing on my PC when I tried to play a disc. This seems like an excellent Giveaway to me if it actually works, but you're gonna get some whiners on this site no matter what you give them. If you gave some of them a thousand dollars they would bitch that's there's a Freeware program that would give them two thousand dollars instead. It's kind of ridiculous that people think they need to offer Freeware alternative to programs being given away for free.

Firstly I am a fan of VLC BUT their latest upgrades (v 2.0 and v 2.01) are buggy. I, like many others have reverted back to previous versions.

If VLC doesn't fix the problem I will be looking for something else, and today's offer seems like a good option.

Some poster said that they don't have a Bluray player. Why not try your DVD player/writer. Tried so far for my newly finish burned movies and just work perfect. It open files (MP4, MKV, MP3, WMV...) fast. If your movies have subtitle just go to tools/preferences/subtitle. One thing I like it you can temporarily stop the movie by pressing esc button of your PC. It will automatically minimize and pause.

No problem with installation, no problem with registration, no problem with running.
The last one is very important for me becuase my internal BluRay drive was bundled with PowerDVD 9 soft which even doesn't start( nor 12 version) on my system.

I've tested it with one BluRay disc( encrypted) and Blu-ray Player for Mac and PC ran it almost flawlessly - except for disc menu which is not original but only software rendered.

Definitely worthwhile downloading!

Can this Blu-ray player display subtitles properly, always fully within the screen area, but also outside the picture area (the interesting bit) wherever possible?

Can it convincingly de-interlace interlaced videos?

Can it distribute mono or stereo sound sources to all speakers in a 5.1 soundsystem?

Can the user crop individual horizontal or vertical lines of pixels in order to neaten up those annoying and distracting ragged edges that plague so many productions, including even recent ones?

If not, I doubt very much that it can match, let alone out-perform, VLC, which, for all its shortcomings, is hard to beat as a universal player (albeit one better suited to video rather than just audio).

Perhaps VLC's worst shortcoming is that it can't move subtitles outside the area of the video being played. If the video signal itself includes a black border, then the subtitles can be moved into it, but if not, they can't be moved into the unrendered black space below the video. This is not a minor shortcoming, yet it seems to be common to almost all players. (The developers of VLC have promised repeatedly to implement this fundamental feature, but still we see no change.) So, does this Blu-ray player beat VLC?

One question, will this software also play my HD DVD collection in my PC Mounted Blu-Ray/HD DVD player?
