Regarding Leawo Music Recorder 1.1.6:

After installing it yesterday and making an unsuccessful first attempt to utilize it, I found this morning that I had no sound. I checked "Adjust Audio Properties" and I found that Leawo had usurped the place of Creative SB Live! Series. When I reversed that, I got my sound back. I will be uninstalling Leawo Music Recorder

This morning I discovered I had no sound. I thought that would go away after a reboot, but it didn't. I checked "Adjust Audio Properties" and found that Leawo had usurped the default place of Creative SB Live! Series. After I reversed that I got my sound back. I will be uninstalling Leawo Music Recorder.

It seems that this Leawo Recorder can identify music while recording - but only from Spotify! It's completely unable to identify the exact same piece when played from a local mp3 file. I tried several different songs - same result with all of them.

@ ric:
Thank you very much for sharing your concerns.

"During the installation, you have to agree to install the proprietary audio driver that is required for this software to record audio."

I didn't encounter anything like this during my installation of this version.

"It damages the audio driver chain by usurping with its own audio driver.
After that, it seems Leawo must be running in order to hear anything from any source.
In other words, it has taken over control of your PC from you, the owner.

Even after you uninstalled the software and reboot. There will be no audio on your PC when using other software.
You have to carry out a System Restore – which brings back you system to what it was before the audio drivers were usurped."

Can others corroborate or contradict these concerns in regard to the version offered today?

I had the previous version offered here and I had no problems with it, i got this new download and tried it out and quess what?? I have no problems with it, it does what it says on the can, I read your comments so I uninstalled, I tried my audio out and guess what,, it still worked fine so I reinstalled todays giveaway, it must be your PC what the problem is, it's not this software

thank you GAOTD and Leawo a keeper for me

Yes, that's exactly right. The problem is that it does install a proprietary audio driver, which it switches to when you run it. And then it fails to restore the original system default when it exits. Instead it picks the first "Speakers" audio device it finds, which may be wrong. You have to go to your Windows Control Panel - Sounds, and re-select the correct audio output.

Hey Naq. i use to get that all the time as well it sometimes told me the software was corrupt till i found out it was kaspersky denying it soon as i turn that off to install it worked fine .

Relying on proprietary audio drivers is very dangerous. First, down the road a better software comes and you either buy or install for free and it may not work.
Second, you update windows or re-install it for some reason, then this software will stop working.
It becomes very tricky to navigate around it.
For example, many of my free audio programs depend on the behavior of the original windows drivers and 2 of them stopped working right away and I had to restore the system to make them work again and of course, I had to remove the Leawo.

My favorite GoTD giveaway in this category was Apowersoft Streaming Audio Recorder, mainly for two things that it does: 1) It automatically starts and stops the recording when the data stream starts and stops, and 2) It can automatically identify unknown music and tag it using some online database they access. Unfortunately the auto-tagging stopped working in my old version of the app some time ago, so I'm looking for a replacement. But I see no evidence that Laewo Music Recorder can do either of these things.

Leawo Music Recorder is an easy to use app with a simple GUI. You pay for that simplicity by not having a lot of control over things like the format of your recording -- the free, portable Wavosaur does much more, but its GUI can look I suppose daunting to someone not used to audio editors. Audacity I think sometimes scares people, though some may want to try using it to record the incoming stream of on-line audio as-is for example, rather than recording what it sounds like when played. However Leawo Music Recorder comes with a virtual audio driver -- those other 2 do not.

As a method of DRM many PCs, laptops etc. do not let you record playing audio. Sometimes this can be fixed [it can be as simple as enabling the device in its properties window], and sometimes not. If not you some people run a jumper from audio out to audio in, or you can buy another audio device, or you can use another driver, either for your existing hardware or a virtual driver, which works without having its own hardware.

During install Windows popped up a dialog that asked if I wanted to install un-signed drivers -- those who don't want to install Leawo's driver might choose no, or you can later uninstall the driver through Device Mgr., which gets rid of the registry entries for the driver, though the file remains. A copy of the driver files can be found in the program's folder.

Installing Leawo Music Recorder is more complicated than something like the portable Wavosaur because of that driver, & because it adds a copy of Microsoft's C/C++ runtime files. Check Windows Update after -- for me it installed "Security Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB2538243)". There were some temporary file from that runtime install left over in the Root directory, C:\ . With an app like this I'd typically use Universal Extractor to get the files minus the installation [though that doesn't always work], or copy the installed program folder(s) from a VM. [I didn't do that with Leawo Music Recorder because I've got enough audio related stuff installed that test results would not be useful, i.e. did it work (or not) because of what I have installed.]

You do not need jumpers to fix an audio problem, just buy and install alternate audio USB device, the drivers are included and the problem is solved.

Its a keeper for me, i was wanting to have this in my kit.
It does the recording very well, it capture's the sound emitted by another software called TextAloud into
mp3 file. I tried various other recording tool, but this seemed to be the best, still downloading though.
I am happy with this Giveaway.
Thank you.

A terrible software product. See my old comment of October 11th, 2013.

Be sure to create a System Restore point BEFORE you install this thing (if you want to).

During the installation, you have to agree to install the proprietary audio driver that is required for this software to record audio. If you do not agree, it fails to function. It damages the audio driver chain by usurping with its own audio driver.
After that, it seems Leawo must be running in order to hear anything from any source.
In other words, it has taken over control of your PC from you, the owner.

Even after you uninstalled the software and reboot. There will be no audio on your PC when using other software.
You have to carry out a System Restore - which brings back you system to what it was before the audio drivers were usurped.

An alternative to doing a restore is installing in the first place with a program that does monitored and reversible installs.

Revo Uninstaller Pro(paid) is the king but I believe free Advanced Uninstaller Pro also has this facility.

Hi Dual-boot here! Installed to both physical partitions (Win8.1.2 & Win10) & install was fine. The colour doesn't bother me, as much as the NOT FINDING where to register. My suggestion is - Go BACK to using words, like we are doing here. I don't add links, I don't leave cryptic icons and expect you to know what they are there for. I gave up hide & seek after my last Great-grandchild reached 7. Why do you think we need to do that - a downward arrow-head in a box is even more cryptic than a gearwheel in a box. For the people that want "NEW" & "SLICK" put an option in the almost NOT found SETTINGS to hide a "banner-like word menu" AFTER all of the picking and choosing's have been done. I've had enough for today and I really would like to say thanks to the authors Shenzen Moyea Software and to GAOTD for today's offering.

My favorite program for recording podcasts and the like. I lost it due to a system recovery. Glad to have it again.
I had tried Audacity, which another person suggested, but didn't know about the "Enable Stereo Mix" so I had no success with it. With this program, you don't need to change any of your computer settings.
Thanks Giveaway Of The Day and Leawo.

Why add another recording program when Audacity has all the features plus editing capabilities for free AND it is ported across platforms so it can be used on Windows, Mac or Linux. Yes this program works, but it is a pay program for most outside of the Give-away of the day.
If you're a first time audio recorder this will do the job, but if you are currently using another full featured product, then there is no reason to switch.

Reply   |   Comment by Hieraco  –  8 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+9)

I agree, however, the Audacity interface is let’s just say a bit overwhelming and intimidating. It’s downright scary to both power user and novice alike. Not to mention a steep learning curve to gain mastery of the application. I try best I can to remember that Open Source programs (and freeware in general) can be at a borderline beta stage in their development. To me that means questionable stability (something I’ve been alleged of having). ;)

Thanks GOTD, I think I”ll check this one out.

I will try this for the timer feature. I have used Audacity but agree with Renegade on its overwhelmingness and so far have not found a timer on it.

Installed on my old 2006 Dell Dimension 5150 using Windows 8.0 pro 32 bit.
When copy and pasting the reg code into the box, use keyboard Ctrl + V because mouse right button 'paste' does not work (at least for me.)
Installed and registered ok.
Program has a purple/maroon colour screen which it seems cannot be changed, but it's ok with me.
I tested it by running a video, and recording the sound, works well, and the format of the audio file was .mp3.
In the options the format of the recording can be .mp3 or .wav and the bitrate and sample rate can be set as needed for quality.
Seems to be a good quality program, clear and easy to understand.
Thanks to the authors Shenzen Moyea Software and to GAOTD for a useful program.

Well shucks. Tried several times to install different programs offered from here the past 3 weeks and all I get is, "failed to connect" each time. No problem downloading; Just wont connect afterwards.

Reply   |   Comment by Naq  –  8 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-12)

Hi Naq. It seems like, you have "a local issue". Do you extract the zip file to a folder ? Do you have some kind of security software, which blocks connection to the server ? It seems very strange, and I really hope, you'll get a fix how to make it work. Unfortunately, I can't come up with anything else, than I suggested. Best of luck :)

Make sure firewall is not blocking that site or domain & check the browser settings as well - had the darndest trouble last year too. Good luck - Dual-boot:)

Sometimes you need to turn off security like the firewall not just disable it to solve the problem.

Reply   |   Comment by CN  –  8 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

I used to have the same problem. I finally discovered that the culprit was my PrivateFirewall. If you have one, try exiting it for a couple of minutes, just for the time needed to install this giveaway, and make sure you turn your firewall back on afterwards.

Cheers,

consuella

If you turn off your third party firewall, turn on the Windows firewall temporarily instead for the duration of the download.

Reply   |   Comment by Godel  –  8 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+2)

The problem is probably that you're not using M$ internet explorer (ie). I use Firefox, yet, if I remove ie, I always had "failed to connect." Believe it or not, I reinstalled ie just for Giveaway of the Day.

Even with internet explorer installed, if ie glitches to "work offline" (often will) then the "failed to connect" message appears. Simply open ie, then, go to the ie file tab, and be certain that workoffline is ticked (checked / unchecked) properly. After that, just resume using FireFox.

Once I had "failed to connect" and work offline wasn't the problem. It was powercuts affecting the isp I use. It righted itself after some storms passed and it quickly sorted itself out.

A firewall or other isp problem could also cause "failed to connect." However, this certainly would not be intermittent, and not likely to "suddenly" occur. As consuella wrote, a local firewall may cause a problem.

The claims of clearing caches or extracting files from zip are rubbish. I've been using Giveaway of the Day since 2007 and never have once had to extract files from the zips here. Now, I use vista, so maybe there's some magic with that because I'm so privileged to save a step.

Reply   |   Comment by AJ  –  8 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

I run into this problem periodically and the result is Norton Antivirus Internet Security thinking that GOTD's installer is a hostile program and blocking its activities - then deleting the installer! There seems to be no rhyme or reason to it, it happens randomly - it's about a 70/30 success rate so far. So when it does happen, I turn off the Norton for about 5 minutes, let it install, then run reactivate Norton on the installed program. I've been downloading things from GOTD for a very long time and have never had a genuinely infected program, so I consider this a low-risk solution. In all liklihood though, the root of the problem is a poor connection between you and GOTD and the installer is timing out... might want to review your Internet settings carefully.

That's good advice but most newer model PC/Laptops e.g. Sony have removed the stereo mix option so will need 3rd party software to get around this.

I can't test the software, because I didn't allow the additional audio device driver to hook-up. The reason for that is, I had in the past audio playback issues with additional device drivers which lead to re-installing the OS. Apart from that, neat looking GUI and probably does a good job. But I have to wait until Leawo has a standard audio device chain.

cheers for now
Thanks for the giveaway

Installed and registered without problems on a Win 8.1.3 Pro 64 bit system. A clean install with an additionally installed driver.

A Chinese company from Shenzen with address, digitally signed Shenzen Moyea Software.
"2007
Certified as a member of Shenzhen Software Double-Certification Association
"

We had a previous version Leawo Music Recorder 1.1.0 on June 21, 2014. Here are the old reviews:
http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/leawo-music-recorder-1-1-0/

Due to the problems in the last GOTD of this software, they have changed the registration. The price tag on their homepage differs:
http://i.imgur.com/NFptfyH.png

Upon start a resizable window opens. Don't know, if anybody likes this color. In the settings you can switch the language between Chinese, English and German. You can define the input source, the automatic split after silence of 0.2 to 10.0 sec, format and bitrate. No you cannot change the skin. Take it or leave it.

@DEVELOPER
German text is usually longer than English text. You have to adapt the text fields to the longer text, otherwise it becomes unreadable:
http://i.imgur.com/6Yxm8Yw.png

You define an audio source, start the record and it should work in a simple way. Once recorded you can download the tags from their database or edit it by yourself.

A fancy looking, simple to use recorder. Nothing new.
You can take it, if you don't have already another product.

Uninstalled via reboot. Don't need this one.

Have a good start into the new week.
