Thought this would be a nice app, but it is ridiculously slow. On my super fast system, it managed 9 password attempts per second. Other programs like this I've tried got around 5000 per second. This one is really a loser. Sorry.

PS- A good password of just 5 digits could take weeks to crack.

Lots of similar FREEWAREs are available.

All have similar features. The only special in this is that it is being priced $19.95 .

I have a challenge for this software.
Tripod.com users can download the backup of their tripod site as an archive and it is password protected. How long will this software take to find its password?

This software or any similar software (password recoverry software) are really useful if you know that the password contains somany characters, you have confused among different passwords, you have forgotten last or in between 2 or 3 characters of the password etc..

Kindly use such software ethically.

GAOTD must have mentioned as "Strictly for Personal and Ethical use Only".

For all of you that are concerned about Russian and Chinese hackers distributing trojan or dialer laden software, you have more to worry about than you thought. Did you know some of the top hackers are Israeli? Indian? Filipino? Cybercrime is a worldwide phenomena.

I use XP Home, and I can see how this would be useful when you archived long forgotten files and ran across them again. I found the interface to be easy to use. I did 2 tests used an easy 6 char password brute-force and mask easily got the password recovered. Then used a 9 char with symbols, upper and lowercase, numbers. Brute force and Mask both took some time ( I supplied 4 chars for Mask). The passwords run attempts at about 3100-3400 per second according to the interface. Once the password is recovered the options were nice .... you can just save the password, drop it to your clipboard, or put it in a text file for later viewing.

Installed OK on my XP system as a replacement for the earlier version offered here.

Installed without problems/complaints, but did NOT run OK on my Windows ME (Millenium) system.

The previous version that was installed worked OK on the ME system, but I uninstalled it to replace and try out this newer version. That was a mistake!

This occurred even though I closed down all unnecessary tasks to reduce the system to the bare minimum of running processes (no antivirus, no spybot, etc).

The two error window messages read as follows:

(TITLE) Desktop

(ICON) (red circle with white "X")

(MESSAGE) A device attached to the system is not functioning

(BUTTON) OK

...and...

(TITLE) Error Starting Program

(ICON) (yellow triangle, black "!")

(MESSAGE) The C:\PROGRAM FILES\KRYLACK PASSWORD RECOVERY\KLPASSREC.EXE file expects a newer version of Windows. Upgrade your Windows version.

(BUTTON) OK

Not a very friendly message. I would have thought the installer would have performed this check first. It doesn't seem to be Win 98/ME compatible despite the misleading claim on this page.

Wish I still had the older one working... but at least I have the newer one on the other machine! I suppose I should say "thanks!"...

#16 - you know, you may be absolutely right... unfortunately, since you're not part of the solution - you're part of the problem....so really, you're just another whining A-hole, and just as stupid as the clueless newbies who post here about the screensavers and DVD rippers.

Here's a suggestion...if you want a better grade of "Free" - why don't YOU jump in and help the GOTD team cut some deals and find some better stuff to give away? YOu won't, because #1 that would require effort and #2 you'd rather piss and moan than get involved. Coward. Loser.

GOTD is giving out software designed to break the password someone has on their program. If you have obtained a password protected .rar or .zip file that you do not have the password for, perhaps it is because you were not meant to open that program.

Perhaps you STOLE that file from the owner.

This, on top of not one but TWO programs this past week containing spyware. Wow.

I suppose tomorrow they will simply offer a virus to infect all our systems?

I saw some earlier comments where people had password-protected a zip file, tried to crack it, and KRyLack said the file type was unrecognized. So I ran my own test. KRyLack doesn't really do anything useful, does it? I mean, even when you know the password and try to give it hints, it still fails. Hard.

I created a zip file using IZArc. Several different encryption methods were available -- I chose the PKWare 2.0 method. (For you who don't know, PKWare is the company that invented the ZIP archive, and this method is probably the oldest, and should be the most compatible.) I set the password as "test" with no punctuation, no numbers, no capitalization, nothing too difficult. I ran a brute-force crack using KRyLack's default options. KRyLack made it all the way through its sequence of 4 letter Ts, quietly skipping the word "test," and I stopped the process.

I then specified only a-z, no caps, no numerals, no symbols, minimum length 4 characters, start-at "ssss" and tried again. Yet again, KRyLack obliviously parsed all permutations of four-letter strings beginning with a t, and merrily tripped into the u combos.

Pssh. You'll have more luck cracking zip files by guessing.
