#73. It sounds like an incorrect profile was used within KooRaRoo for your Samsung BDP - if you can contact support (at) kooraroo (dot) com I'll be glad to sort this out.

Having a transcoded file on disk means that you can play it again or play it on a different, compatible device without re-transcoding. If a right profile is chosen, then transcoding is minimized as much as possible.

Serviio is only free in a limited version - the full version is not free. KooRaRoo can also be controlled using any DMC application - there are lots of those. Plus, you can push content from KooRaRoo to your device. KooRaRoo also has much more powerful organizing features and much more :) Thanks for the feedback though!

KooRaRoo also supports FF/REW on Samsung and other DLNA devices. Samsung devices are limited in this sense because they only support "skipping" through the file by holding the left/right keys on the remote, not FF/REW, as you would expect.

I wonder if anyone reads the comments after the first day.

I made some comparisons between Serviio and KooRaRoo.
1. I tried streaming a mkv video to my DLNA compatible Samsung Blu-Ray player. KooRaRoo tried for over 30 seconds to play the file and then a "file unsupported" message was displayed. Serviio started playing within 2 seconds with no problems.
2. KooRaRoo stores transcoded files in a folder that can take up many gigabytes of hard drive space. Serviio plays most of my videos without transcoding so they play almost instantly and it does not store transcoded copies of the videos on the harddrive.
3. Serviio supports online video. KooRaRoo does not as far as I can tell.
4. Serviio is free.
5. Serviio can be controlled remotely use an Android App called Serviio Droid.
6. KooRaRoo has a nicer GUI.

Until KooRaRoo does some major updates it compares poorly to Serviio.

Its way too slow in adding a folder of under 45gb.

Also the price is extreme considering the free alternatives. I hear XBMC is well made with a myriad of accessories n it's free.

Please also remember that KooRaRoo is very new - just 7 weeks since the initial release and there are many great things planned!

I appreciate all positive feedback - thank you again! I also take very seriously any relevant negative feedback and all the issues will be looked at.

Problem right off.... my computer overheated and shut down. At the install, immediately began transcoding everything while at the same time, this tried to install some kind of start up (blocked by my scotty dog).

Apparently that was just too much. Computer shut itself down in a matter of seconds.

This shouldn't start transcoding anything until asked. I really don't see how this is going to be of any use until these bugs are fixed.

Haven't had much time to play with it, but so far am a bit disappointed. I installed it for one reason, the claim that it can transcode backed up DVDs. I have a huge library of backed up DVDs on a computer I use as a media server. It required me to convert the DVD VOBs into mpg and avi files for my various devices. I thought great, this will do that for me. Except it won't. I can see the converted mpg and avi files, but when I go to the DVD video_ts folders I get told by my Bluray there are no valid files to play. I'm hoping I am doing something wrong, but even the product web site makes this sound automatic.

The VOB handling is pretty bad (although to be fair Plex is just as bad) but the blu-ray handling is non-existent. However I wouldn't put the effort into adding blu-ray unless it can be done a lot better than the way DVD folders with vobs are handled.

Have set up and configured properly but it will not play to device's that are shown. Also there's no way to add a device, I tried to change ip and Mac address's but that is locked with no way to change. I've tried to do this from the edit button but it won't accept a change. Also is this not a full program from your comment's the 30day version is a full version, please explain!!!

Update: To my surprise, all files were added to the library in about 30minutes. This program is really nice. I like the fact that it organized and named the music, video and pictures in there own folders. I do not have a smart TV, therefore streaming via PS3. Setup is as easy as download, fire it up and point it to your media. No messing with network settings is a plus( as compared to XBMC) and alos the PS3 recognized it without any issues.
Seriously, with an improved interface, it would be a serious contender. The only competition thus far is Plex media server (free and with free updates). Thanks for the offer.

Installed without any issues. Interface is very basic and simple, something more GUI will be more user friendly and useful e.g like plex and xbmc. tried to add my source, a 1TB Samsung HD full of video and music, via the add menu and it says that it will take 42days to complete. Plex was able to add my data in a few minutes to its library.
Was able to stream a music file to my ps3 without any issues.
I think with a more pleasing interface, you will have a great product able to compete with plex and XBMC.

I am back :)

Let me go through the questions and thanks for the feedback!

#33. If your Sony TV supports DLNA (what model is it?), then you should see KooRaRoo server on it and you can play files directly on your TV. You don't need to control anything from the PC, unless you want to.

#34. Can you please e-mail support (at) kooraroo (dot) com and we'll sort it out.

#36. The CPU will be used as much as possible while adding files in (to make this as fast as possible), but this is typically a one-off process and after that KRR is very fast to both deliver and browse through folders, no matter how large.

#37. Yes, burning subtitles is coming soon. Thanks for the suggestion regarding the Slingbox - KRR can currently stream online radio stations and this will expanded into video as well.

#38. DirecTV are probably not renderer devices, so you cannot "push" files to it. Instead, you should see KooRaRoo on your DirecTV device and you can browse and play your files from it. Feel free to contact support and we'll sort it out.

#39. Sorry, the download is controlled by GAOTD, so I don't know why it's corrupt. Perhaps try clearing your browser cache or try a different browser.

#40. Is this on an initial run or after you added files in? What does the status on the splash say? Please contact support and we'll take a look at what's going on.

#41. Thank you! :)

#42. Great, thanks!

Installs ok, doesn't seem to be too resource hungry even with FireFox hogging IgorII's 1Gb ram (old WinXP Thinkpad R52) though it still might be a good idea to stitch on some more memory and a bigger HD... 'course I don't have any DLNA-compatible hardware, yet, to stream to...

#11 here after a long day at work.

Not only is this cool, it is Totally Cool!

Turns out that KooRaRoo was using AAC encoding which Android apparently doesn't natively support.

With the installation of the BubbleUPnP and BSPlayer, now I can access all my media on my Nexus 7, with sound!!

Totally cool! I'll even spring for the new versions when they come out!!

Thanks again!

I'm guessing that most of the negative votes are from people who have no idea what this does.

It's a DLNA (explained in posts above) server. It allows you to easily stream media to devices that have DLNA compatible renderer's available. ie, a media player than can see DLNA servers.

The difference between this and Windows Media Player (WMP) as a server? Easy, WMP only supports basic files, such as .wav, .mp3, .wmv, .wma, .avi. It does not support (without some external software and fiddling about) files such as .mkv, .ape, .ogg, .ogm.

This software also provides a safe way of sharing media, without having to create users & passwords with possible (but unlikely) safety issues on your PC. The media player can only see what the server wants it to see.

If you have a Logitech Revue or a Western Digital WDTV Live or an HTPC or a Raspberry Pi running XBMC, this will allow you to stream media from your home PC (or server with a bit of mucking about) to one of those devices and play it on your TV. You won't need to use an external HD or thumb drive to move the media to it temporarily to watch your content.

It also has the ability to transcode (convert) incompatible media to a format that a player will understand. A lot of TV's are DLNA compliant nowadays, but still don't understand MKV's. This software can/will convert the MKV into a file the TV will happily play. This will require some tweaking from the user to find the best compatibility if the software doesn't contain the actual TV/Media player in it's list. This transcoding is done on the fly using the power of the PC it's running on to do the conversion.

I did have an issue with the transcoding on my Raspberry Pi in that I only got audio and no video. It's something I'll have to look into.

I also found that the software didn't keep the directory structure I have set up for my media. Everything was lumped into one big file list. This certainly needs fixing, unless I've done something wrong on my end (which was to add a media directory in and let it scan).

REMEMBER: All DLNA server software CANNOT reverse or fast forward while playing media. REMEMBER THAT!

I have a Samsung 3D TV and I use Mezzmo for over a year now and IT IS DYNAMITE, but I learned at that time, after doing extensive research on DLNA servers that THOSE 2 FUNCTIONS (fast forward and reverse) cannot be done because of the type of streaming it is over a wired/wireless network.

So, please keep that in mind in case you record something from a TV and then stream it to another, it will not fast forward over the commercials. It only has a PAUSE and STOP FEATURE.

Other free alternatives:

TVersity
PS3 Media Server (don't let the name fool you)
ORB Caster
Windows Media Player
Windows Media Center

The price is also a big issue. $39.95 for a software that doesn't really do anything free alternatives can do. The cheapest real world alternative to DLNA (wdtv, popcorn hour, etc. that use regular Windows/SMB shares) cost around $60. My advice, look at free alternatives, improve on what they offer, lower price to compete with alternative products.

Installed on a XP SP2 PC, 2x3,0GHz AMD Proc, 4GB RAM
On startup the initial window, the one with the reflected KooRaRoo Media inscription, doesn't disappear and it gets stuck on the "Starting UPnP..." message although the main window appears too.
Can't start server, is says "Pending..." forever.
Uninstalled and installed multiple times.
Once I got a crash of the application and a file was sent, I can't remember the error.
Enabling logging I got the following:

2012-09-21T21:15:48.234+02:00 [PLT_UPnP::Start] (1128) SEVERE: NPT_CHECK failed, result=-32055 (UNKNOWN) [(ips.ApplyUntil(PLT_SsdpInitMulticastIterator(socket), NPT_UntilResultNotEquals(0)))]

Downloaded and installed fine, but won't detect my Blu-ray player. Running Win 7 Pro, 64 bit. This unit is WIRED to Verizon FIOS Wireless router. Trying to detect Panasonic Blu-ray Model DMP-BDT-215 (not Wired). The Blu-ray does see the network, has an IP address, etc. Can I force KRR to find the player? If so how?

The software looks promising, installed and registered fine. System began adding video's to the programs internal database. I had over 1,000 video's in a folder with subfolders. My problems is that I could not stop the program from building the database. You can stop process but a window comes up and states that "files actively being processed will not be affected". What the heck is that? I say stop...then stop, damn it. Don't just take over my PC. When I tasked managered the program to kill the running task, it did but, it also popped up a window that said that some of the tasked could not be stopped. I restarted the computer, and it immediately went into processing the video's again "without me even starting the program". Yes, the box marked 'load on windows startup' was not checked. I don't like programs that have a mind of their own. I set the priorities, not a program that's shouldn't of been running after my restart. Initiative is one thing, what it did was rude, if not hijacking my processor to do it's own "processing". I plan to keep it, but I'll make sure to start the processing before going to bed.

Kevbirder, thank you for your questions. I am wondering the same things. I'm trying to make it work but I'm not sure what I need to do. My DirectTV device shows up on the bottom but I can't figure out how to play my movies from my computer. Whenever I clik on the "play to device" tab on top it says "no renderer devices found!" I don't understand how the device appears on the bottom but I can't use that device. I've even transcoded a video but I can't figure out what to do with it after transcoding and can't even find the video.

I know I'm a noob but I'm guessing there are more like me. It sounds like a great program if I could figure it out.

Looks like an interesting app - downloading it now.

From what I gather from the comments so far, the encoding of subtitles is not yet in the product but is a future feature.
I currently use TVMobili which is easier to setup and use that Serviio but has a pay per use setup which is now being used when streaming over the internet.
Maybe KKR can set up a feature similar to Slingbox to do this as a future enhancement?

Thanks,
Larry

Can someone explain in simple terms what this software achieves?
I probably represent a large number of PC users who have never heard of a WHS2011 server and have only a fuzzy idea of what a NAS device is.

I have:
A desktop PC with wireless router on the 3rd floor of my house.
A wireless laptop bought last year.
A 2 year old Sony large screen TV situated downstairs.
A modern Blackberry phone
I have no desire to watch films on the Backberry's tiny screen, but maybe streamed mp3s would be interesting.

Currently I don't share files between the laptop and desktop as I haven't found the need, but I'm sure I could set that up if needed.

Now are we saying that there is some way to play videos from the desktop PC upstairs on the TV downstairs and this software would help with any compatibility problems?

Is this all controlled from the PC? So I have to run up 2 flights of stairs to pause the video? Or perhaps it could be controlled from the laptop? Even if the video is on the hard disk on my desktop?

Is a wire needed to link the PC and TV (not practical) or do you have to buy some sort of wireless device to plug into the TV? Can the wireless router be used to send data from the PC to TV?

It sounds great, but what do you need to set all this up (without the jargon) so that I can make use of this software?

Congratulations to Dennis on being one fo the most responsive developers ever on here.

Just wanted to thank you, the developers, for this giveaway. I just set up a wireless router on my PC/cable connection the other day (All new to me). I also just purchased a Sony SMP-N200. Your application worked perfectly. I was delighted to see that the Media Player would recognize and play off of my Seagate FreeAgent drive so that I wouldn't have to turn on my PC to watch movies anymore. However.. this great application ALSO lets me access a MUCH bigger database of movies left on my PC, should I so choose to stream them. Absolutely wonderful.

#26: KooRaRoo Media provides more features than Mezzmo, such as support for multiple audio languages in video files, online radio streaming, parental controls, more powerful dynamic (smart) lists and a few others. It's also faster to browse and deliver your files. There are many more things planned and they are being implemented at a fast pace.

For some reason my comments are not appearing immediately, so sorry for the delay, but it's out of my hands :(

Just a quick note about the Windows' built-in server and KRR: the built-in server in Windows does not provide as much flexibility and is not as well fine-tuned for specific devices as KooRaRoo. KRR provides more organizational features than Windows Media and it works with more devices and has to transcode less because of the device-specific profiles.

Also, KRR is updated when devices' firmware changes to reflect those changes and is generally growing in features, while the server you get with Windows is not.

Thanks for the suggestion regarding integrating online services, this is something that will be implemented (and you can already stream online radio stations through KRR even now).

Cheers!
