I did like the simplicity of being able to define a bounding rectangle or polygon in the previous version giveaway, rather then having to paint over the whole area that you want fixed in this new version – can’t see any reason why that couldn’t have been left in.

Success with this progam is very much predicated upon the type of photo you're working on - its tonalities, hues and complexity.

I personally find Inpaint 3 extraordinarily basic, with a crying need for refinements, such as feathering, cloning and its brush size mechanism to be very much improved. I find results are pretty much hit and miss because of the lack of tool refinements.
I also don't like the lack of undo in certain situations. Just plain frustrating.

All in all, Inpaint is just too crass for image manipulators who have a keen eye for pixel perfection in their images.

This is one of my favorites for GAOTD and the improvements over version 2.4 are outstanding. I especially like the "brush" tool - much easier to use. I downloaded the program this evening and expected to see a few hundred positve responses but close to 800 "thumbs up"! Wow!

One important point to note is degradation of quality of jpeg images everytime it is opened, edited and saved again. In this programme the entire operation of removing objects has to be done at one go and saved to reduce quality loss. The developers could find out means of making this programme compatible with tiff. photo files which are lossless. Lasso tools for selection of the area to be removed would be a great improvement. Any red brushing would be confined to within the selection area and would not spread over. This is needed for selecting objects against complex backgrounds for removal.

Reference //32. The puppy was in the green field and even careless brushing, i.e., inclusion of areas outside the puppy would not matter as it is a flat background and pixel substitution will not show. This means clean removal of objects without evidence is possible in such photos and not others.

Once again it is reiterated that the application should be able to work with tiff. images along with a selection tool in future versions.

Finally got it to install but it is not as good as the earlier version I have just removed. You can add it to the send to menu but unlike the earlier version it fails to open the picture in the program it only opens the program without a picture showing. The earlier version I could right click a picture and send it to inpaint and it would open in the program now I have to go look for the picture again after opening.
Guess I will go back to the other version as this is not as good IMHO

I love this program. I had two previous versions, then got a virus, then re-formatted my computer, so I haven't had this program for five months. I tried altering some images with first adjusting the size of the brush stroke then re-sizing the resultant rectangular box, and the results are very good. I think this adjustable brush and resizable box combination is superior to previous versions because they allow for more control. Thanks, GotD!

I believe the "new" interface is like the previous 1.x interface with the red paintbrush, which I prefer.It's also, as previously noted, very similar to Image mender.

The multi-process the same area was very useful, so I'll keep the previous version too. I'm presuming they dropped this feature as zooming in a few times and multi-processing the same area caused the program to crash and lose changes made so far! Or it introduced artifacts into the multi processed area

Great and very handy program all the same!

@LSmith, #44 -- I agree that thumbnails are pretty essential. You did not say what OS you have, but ... well, I got the 'no thumbnails' setting, too, here in Vista, but if you use the "Tiles" view, you may see the thumbnails, like I do, in the "File Open" dialog.

One caveat, folks -- the first time I opened a file in this version, it had defaulted to \Windows\system32 for the directory. That's no sweat, I just navigated over to my pictures, edited one, then tried to resave it with "Save As".

At that point, it told me I didn't have permission to save the file -- I had not noticed that it was still using \Windows\system32 for its default. Again, probably the first time only, and no harm was done, but I think they really should set their defaults to somewhere in the Documents tree, eh?

Anyway, wonderful product, I've been touching up family pictures from the late 1800's with it.

Thank lemonadesoda. Your solution appears to work. Not sure if it's going to limit me to the number of times used before giving me a warning though; time will tell. I do like the polygon selection technique for certain cleanup work and that extra precision can come in handy. Cool that the new version installed and activated will also keep activation for the older versions. :)

After saving it to a different folder so I could keep 2.4, it wouldn't register on my Win7/32. I reinstalled it without removing the old one and it came up with the new folders. After activation once again, it registered. Always a fun program to have! And oh so useful when you break up with a significant other but want to keep those memorable photos of your trip to see the worlds largest yarn ball!

Help

I installed on Vista Home Premium and then used the Activate app in the unzipped folder BUT I forgot to do this as Administrator and under HELP it was asking for a serial number. Uninstalled the program, wound back Windows to the Restore point I'd made before installing the program, redownloaded it and activated it, this time as Administrator and it's still asking for a registration code. Any idea how I get round this?

Thanks

I've used Inpaint 2.4 for some time now. Well, since it was last given away on GAOTD and it's a great program but I always thought that the interface was a bit big and didn't look very nice. This new version 3.0 is a nice update! Have run it on XP and Win7 64bit with no problems at all. Very easy to use very effective way to edit pictures and remove things you don't want quickly without the headaches of a larger more involved graphics program. Thanks for offering this new version!

What a brilliant little programme.

I tried it out on a bush scene that had a power pole and a road marker peg in it and it replaced them with bush that fitted perfectly into the surrounding bush.

Quite remarkable, and the quality was something I wouldn’t have been able to achieve with my other Photo Editing Programmes.

Thanks GOTD and TeoreX

Thanks to post #39 for the link to V2.4 I downloaded and installed 3.0 then downloaded and installed V2.3 in different directory and both seem to be working fine. Though I did not get any registration key when I clicked activate. It just took me back to the GAOTD website. Must be ok though all seems to work fine.

I have used both versions mentioned a lot here. The version offered 2day makes the selection process more precise, although it takes a little practice 2 get a steady hand.

The reconstruction is better in some circumstances & not so much n others, so I would guess that part cancels each other out.

1 thing I think would help is a 'feather' feature much like the brush size on this newest version. Some of the reconstructions r rather abrupt which most things n photos r not, so it takes a lot more work 2 get them 2 look 'natural' & not 'fixed'.

Another improvement would b 2 have a circle in use on the actual photo depicting the size of the brush selected. Showing a size 10 or size 15 above & only a pinpoint on the photo makes 4 unnecessary trial & error, which is time-consuming, which is what the program seems like it is trying 2 eliminate.

All n all I think this is a nice little program that makes getting rid of unwanted 'stuff' easier than u can do w/the more xtensive programs. 4 instance, I have PS but I would use this 2 get rid of unwanted 'stuff'.

Have the previous version 2.4 installed on my computer and have been very happy with it. Installed new version (in a different directory) and glad I did not lose previous version. Tried unsuccessfully to remove a "table leg" from a picture with new version 3. I was successful with previous version 2.4 - removed the leg completely. I will be keeping the previous version as I find it more successful. Thanks GOTD and TeoreX for the opportunity to try new programs.

Seemed to work on a picture I chose to test it on , except it would not remove a solid black area anywhere on the picture.

Don't know if anyone else had this problem. I repeated it multiple times and still didn't work.

For all who install on win 7 64x, after download RIGHT click on "impaint.exe and click on "install as Administrator." Did so and had no problems at all with the install or activation. And remember to click on ACTIVATE AFTER you install.

While this version did away with the triangles, etc, and uses a brush, the SIZE of the brush stroke is ADJUSTABLE, so it can be as small or as large as you want. Sometimes a small brush stroke can go places where a bigger triangle is just too big.

Overall, I like this program. Maybe it won't get a complex picture "perfect," but if you have photoshop you can fix what impaint misses.

I had 2.3 (somehow missed 2.4) and COMODO antivirus striped the guts out of it so it wouldn't work. So thanks for this newer version. It's a simple program, doesn't have much of a footprint, so if you do any type of image work, why not get it today? After all, can't beat the price!

I have used the older version of this program before on an older computer with good results so I was very interested in the new version offered today. I used the suggestions mentioned here to install both versions(worked great, thanks guys!)on this new computer running 7. I then tried both versions using the same photos. The new version did a fast and perfect job, excellent in fact. I have worked with lots of photos and artwork so I admit I'm apt to pick photos that can be cleaned or altered with the best results, but this version does work very well. I wanted to mention, for those who may be novices at using graphic editors, the red circle on the toolbar with the white numbers is the size of your edit brush, it has a slide that if you move it up or down will downsize or enlarge your brush. Click on the red circle to bring up the slider. If the edit result is not to your satisfaction and you would like to undo it quickly, use the two keyboard keys "control" and "z" at the same time, to redo if you decide you liked it after all is "shift" "control" and "z".

@ #68 Terry: I beleive you were referring to #58 on this forum as far as possible virus,not 53. I'm 53 and I commented in regards to activation on Vista. Also,I would like to state in regards to the removal of unwanted items; Once you trace and fill in in the object for removal you can resize and/or drag the outer dotted outline to whichever area you want to use as the blend fill-in prior to conversion. This will replace your unwanted item with the area you have chosen in a blended manner.
Exmple: You want to take that person everyone hates out of a group photo: Simply trace the person,fill in your selection,then drag the rectangular dotted line to a wall for example and resize it so it only takes that color with it's shades for a blend fill. Start your conversion and voila ! Hated person was never there !

Outstanding program, it simply removes artifacts in a picture file, this is exactly what I want and no more than that. 9.8/10 STARS, Not sure why some are posting "The Bad" listings, this program is one of the greatest artifact removal tools for the PC, KudozZz! I use it frequently.

TIP:

Minimize Your clutter do this:

Load add/ remove or preferably use alternate: "Revo Uninstaller Pro..."

AND take a look at how frequently if ever You use softwares that are installed;

If Never after months of being installed ( If not system tools, )

Then uninstall those and get Your space back, afterall if it's not paying the rent, kick it out ( Meaning UNINSTALL IT! )

#42: "... Now all I’ve got to figure out is what’s gone wrong with the registration process:..."

Assuming you downloaded "InPaint3.0_new", Activate.exe adds entries in the HKCU area of the registry -- if it doesn't have necessary permissions you won't get the key entered. Running Activate.exe as admin [as in the GOTD readme.txt] usually is enough, but I have seen policies/permissions that have been changed so that it wouldn't [AV software?]. If that's the case Google/Bing for info on how to set permissions for that portion of the registry -- don't forget to backup before diving into the registry.

* * *

#46: "Tested on a few simple paintings, worked well with simple backgrounds, not so well with a watermark – it jumbled the surrounding images."

The seam carving Wikipedia article [linked in other post] has more detail, but long story short the process relies on data in the surrounding parts of the image to fill-in-the-blank area where you've painted. Large, somewhat monotonous areas work well [the larger the better] -- small diverse areas don't work so well. While I think it's *usually* more practical to resort to traditional cloning tools in those cases, you can if need be try creating a montage of sorts in an image editor, made up of similar bits & pieces of the original image, & feed that to InPaint, copy/pasting the section you need back on top of the original.

Try Malwarebytes if prob still persists. Have you tried downloading using Firefox, Opera or Chrome rather than I.E.

I had a similar Virus a while back and these steps worked for me.

InPaint 3 is a simple to use, 1 file app that *appears* to use seam carving to let you remove objects in an image. Selection tools [to mask what you want to go away] are limited to a [primitive] brush -- once you paint over the area you want to "disappear", you see a bounding box -> adjust it to include the surrounding area of the image that you want to be sampled to fill in where you painted -> then hit the InPaint button [looks like a media player Play button]. If the result isn't good enough, try repeating the process, painting over the area(s) you want to improve. Easy & quick to use, InPaint alone won't work on every image or in every situation...

I've used the earlier versions [from GOTD] on just a part of an image I isolated [e.g. select -> copy -> paste to new image doc/file] in an image editor that didn't have seam carving -- afterward, back in that image editor I've overlaid that fixed portion on top of the original... it's always worked well, though sometimes I've had to do a bit of touch-up using traditional cloning-type tools. And it's been worth the effort IMHO -- in some cases it's difficult to avoid patterns using a clone brush or tool, & it can also be hard to match gradient shadows &/or lighting. Used like that (on parts of a photo exported as a new image), InPaint can also be handy restoring old photos with damage &/or fading around the edges, creating something you might use to help fill in the blanks.

InPaint itself is a 1 file app [~5.5 MB], though older versions came with a help file. After installing InPaint you have 2 new registry keys, 1 for uninstall & one for Inpaint, & as already mentioned by others, today's GOTD key appears to work with older versions as well... in fact I renamed v. 2.3 Inpaint1.exe, v. 2.4 Inpaint2.exe, & placed them in the same folder with today's version -- all seem to work fine.

Very Brief Seam Carving History...
Ariel Shamir & Shai Avidan did a research paper on math that could be used for Seam Carving, which is the basis for [seam carving] features in image editing apps & plug-ins that can re-size an image without distorting the relative size & aspect of objects in that image -- removing objects from the image is also possible, but as it was not the original goal & doesn't always work perfectly, it receives less attention. AFAIK the 1st Windows app using it was ReTarget, which was bought by a P/Shop plugin company. You can now find lots of info etc. searching for "seamcarving" -- "image retarget" also works, but with less relevant hits. It started with Ariel Shamir http://goo.gl/fkXDu -- click the Research button, then Seamcarving. Wikipedia has pages on both Seamcarving & Inpainting: http://goo.gl/NRnI -- http://goo.gl/2GMQg . If I remember correctly this was one of the original implementations, finding it's way into the GIMP [downloads available] http://goo.gl/XKrC -- GIMP: http://goo.gl/02xh . The Liquid Rescale GIMP plug-in is here: http://goo.gl/XaCf1 .

@17, Bentley Siva
@47, WaveThemes

You’re both quite welcome.

After reading my initial post, a fellow employee decided to tinker with @39, lemonadesoda’s suggestion.

As I type, he’s experimenting with dual installs – 3.0 and 2.4.1 over a 2nd 3.0 install. Similar to renaming the directory, start program entry, and icon, it appears that we can all have the BEST of both 2.4.1 and 3.0 with some creative file management and activations. Of course, at this time, its difficult to ensure that both will work passed day 31 and beyond - if any trial period engages.

Thanks for the kudos!

I installed InPaint during a previous GOTD offering and subsequently purchased it (ver 2.3. It has some crashing issues but I love what I'm able to do with the application. I appreciate the warnings about the shortcomings in the newer version - so glad I did not purchase the upgrade and thereby lose my current version.

I have two previous versions of InPaint from previous GOTD offerings. Both have provided very needed time savings in processing image portions that needed alterations. I am anxious to test-run the new offering, but three separate times since today's version has been available, my computer has error messages and files from GOTD do not download. I hope I can obtain today's offering before time expires today. I offer two thumbs-up from both previous, but can't at this point in time, yet. GOTD, any suggestions from your end?

I call the program from my photo album software (FastStone Image Viewer) as a way to edit the picture with an external editor, Ver 1.0 and version 2.x will open the file passed to it. Ver 3.0 will NOT accept a filename passed to it and open that file. I may stick with ver 2.4 because of it.

I've been a long-time user of Inpaint and have been using version 2.3 for the longest time. I downloaded this 3.0 version, tried it out ........ and quickly removed it!

I prefer the shape selection on the older version .. either a rectangle or a freehad drawn shape. I prefer the option of being able to redo a spot without redrawing it. What's with the drawing with a marker in the new version before a box shows?

Some may perfer the new version, but I can't foresee me using it.
