They should really rethink the softwares name. iconlover is not very professional sounding. here is some free ideas.
icon studio, iconshop, icon designer, icon drawer pro. the list of names is endless. put the developers in a room and brainstorm

What do you think about this portable software:

_ "IcoFX Portable (Freeware)" - "http://portableapps.com/apps/graphics_pictures/icofx_portable" ?

It's good enough for you expectations?

I cannot believe some of the responses here regarding this product. I have only been testing the product for a couple of hours and I think it is pretty good. Sure the interface may look like other software packages but surely that is a positive in that there is a minimal learning curve - ease of use is good.

Now to the complaints about price. Firstly you are getting this for free today so you do not have to pay a cent. BUT even if you did, how much effort has gone into producing this software package? Lets say it took 10 hours (lets keep it ridiculously low just for those who cannot do math) which includes testing across the various platforms etc. That means they are getting $3.95 per hour per copy. There is no guarantee they will sell many copies (and not from here). So is $40 too much, I think not.

So to those whingers out there, if you think you can do better then go ahead and deliver something worthy to the community and of course it must be under $40 considering you think that is a King's ransom.

What a bunch of whingers !!!

The opening "design icon" screen sort of reminds me of the old "Icon Editor" but the similarity ends as soon as you start looking at some of the tools and features this program has.

This is not a 15 minute "I'm ready to give a review." program. There's just so much it can do that it will take awhile to get used to it.

But it looks like it's a keeper. TNXs to Aha-Soft and GOTD.

Thank you GOTD and aha-soft for this nice program!
But I keep having it crash on my XP SP3 computer:

Using the "Download icons from the Internet"
results in errors (repeatedly) (after a lot of downloading/extracting)
with the program crashing and ultimately
Windows crashing, EVERY time.
After a reboot trying "Export" and "Icons to folder..." with the results (of what icons it did manage to download) also results
in the program crashing and ultimately Windows crashing...

Any ideas?

A website in the 70's? What Internet was that? The World Wide Web that I use was created by Tim Berners-Lee in 1989. What were you using in the 70's, ARPANET?

No problems with download and install on my win7-64 system. Looks like a good program I like the icon library functions and especially like the automatic internet icon downloader

BUT...............

There is a problem with the icon download process! Apparently there is some kind of size limitation on an icon library (program? filetype?). the program craps out after about 20k icons and says something like "too many icons delete some and continue downloading. However the control dialog foor downloading has vanished so one has to restart the process, soon overtaking the limit again! I tried a few work arounds, but couldn't get to the end.. :(

suggestion:
either eliminate the limitation (if it's the program's) or fix the dialog so one can actually continue. there is a pause button but that doesn't help because you cant get to the menu items when paused so cant eliminate duplicates, for example

First, I'd like to say thanks to GotD and Aha-Soft for today's offering. Great little program that does an excellent job for the intended purpose.

But now a condensed version of the rant I originally started here.

I've visited this site daily for a few years now. Sometimes I download the program, most times I don't. Depends on whether it's something I personally want to check out. But I appreciate that GotD makes this possible.

But I have to say I get really tired of constantly reading so many posts here complaining about so many things. If the program offered today isn't what you need/want, move on. Check tomorrow. Do you walk into a store and complain about every product on the shelf that you don't like or need? Maybe you do.

And the people who want everything for free these days. I applaud the people willing to devote the time and energy to develop a great product and give it away for free, but some people do this for a living. How many people here would devote hundreds of hours to creating something and be happy when everyone wanted it for free? When you do, let me know so I can see the comments on it. You come here looking for a paid product that is being given away today for free, then complain about the regular asking price. Seriously? If you think everyone should work for free, I have some projects around the house that need done.

Then there are the people who complain about having to register, or can't get the activation to work. Too much trouble to register for something you're getting for free? Sounds like my kids when they were six. Can't make the program work? Check the software between the chair and the keyboard, that's likely where the problem is.

There are some good posts here, and some helpful and/or productive comments, but there is also so much whining here on a daily basis it's hard to believe the posts are made by adults.

And before somebody posts back "If you don't like the comments don't read them", I usually don't anymore. But I do appreciate knowledgeable comments about the pros and cons of software I haven't used, so I do read those.

And yes, that was the short version...

E.g. Can these icons be used for folder identification?

I can't believe some of the bad reports elicited by this program. As an Iconophile dating back to the DOS days this program surprised me more pleasantly than any other similar has in a decade. Even though it lacks the raw power of Photoshop (and layers) the Effects are plentiful and really very good. I can see myself using this for one-off jobs or modifying existing icons.

People, be aware! Shrinking down a (large) image to icon size doesn’t make it a good icon. A good icon is one you can easily identify even if it’s small. In most cases, icons with only a few colors are preferable!

It seems like a nice icon editor. But the "Download icons from the internet" option isn't very well thought out. When you click on it, it begins to rapidly download vast numbers of icons from different internet sources with no apparent means of selection or organization. It doesn't say where it's putting them on your hard drive. It apparently puts them all in one huge icon library in the program until it eventually hits some limit and stops with an error message "Too many images". It's not clear what to do then - are the icons already saved somewhere, or do you need to save the icon library? Some of the archives downloaded trigger a virus warning.

This brings back fond memories of wasting hours painstakingly creating tiny custom albeit primitive icons for my win3.1 OS using a rudimentary icon maker (cannot recall the name, just a tiny grid box maybe 16x16) and pretty much guessing where any line or letter had to start in order to fit the grid.

IconLover is nifty keen. The ability to export to other image formats suggests a fantastic, easy method of doctoring images for use as avatars on forums.

Begs the question, why doesn't GOTD allow avatar images? (or have I overlooked that personalization feature or am I blocking one too many cookies?)

@Paul, did you actualy look at the program, comparing this to paint.net is like comparing motorbike with a bike, yes they both have two wheels and a steer but there the comparison stops. You can do some things with a bike that you can do with a motorbike and vice verse but I guess you agree they still are two different things. Paint.net (an excellent image editor/paint program) can for example not save in ico or cur format.

@free-everything... the roaring 70's did not use the tc/ip protocol but ARPANET, cyclades and a few other protocols, there was no standard and more important... there where no graphics. In 1982, the Internet protocol suite (TCP/IP) was standardized, and consequently, the concept of a world-wide network of interconnected TCP/IP networks, called the Internet, was introduced. Either you worked for a gov or military institution by then to know how it "looked" back then or your full of oxpoo

TIP for the users of the good ol'WINZIP.... if the GOTD setup does NOT have an activate.exe and activate.gcd with it you do not have to extract the package but can run it from the extra (In Dutch it's extra, might be tools in English version)tab using unzip and install, if the activate is there you have to unzip it first.

Thanks GOTD and Aha-soft, nice program

With free online apps at http://www.iconj.com and we can convert any photo or pic by clicking on their second listed tool "Pic To Icon Converter".

If you use Firefox you can then use "Bookmark Favicon Changer for Firefox" http://goo.gl/m5BtP if you want to change any bookmark icons.

If you use Google Chrome browser, then you can use the http://www.iconj.com "Favicon Hosting" through that home page on the right near the top so that you can then import the resulting url to the "I hate your favicon" extension for Chrome http://goo.gl/EL0Cr and change the bookmark icon if you wish, for any bookmark.

Hello,

Thanks for your interest and comments. We got a lot of letters about registration problem with IconLover downloaded from giveawayoftheday.com.

There are 2 variants to register IconLover and remove splash screens.

1) You should to extract files from IconLover534.zip
and execute Activate.exe. It will put a registration code into the
registry. Activate.exe requires Activate.gcd file, thus it can not
work when you start Activate.exe from unpacked .zip.

2)Put a registration code into the program. We can not publish the code. Please visit our support page and ask for registration code
http://www.aha-soft.com/support.htm

I think that GAOTD sent this instructions :)

Thanks for using of our software.

#2, there's nothing wrong with the website. In fact I find it clear and clean and very functional. Just because it doesn't fit your idea of a modern design doesn't mean that it doesn't work perfectly well for others. And I don't know where you are coming from, but there were no websites in the "roaring seventies," as the web itself was not even invented until the 80s.

I haven't yet tried the software, but it would be nice if comments on GAOTD could be kept to evaluations and notations on the usefulness of the software itself, not so many peripheral issues and personal preferences.

#1 Paul...this is NOTHING like Paint.net! Try them out and see for yourself.

#21 Deacon...the info IS in the read-me text. Click on Set up first. When finished installing, go ahead and open it. Then close the program. Then click on the activate icon where ever you extracted the files to. Then open the program again, and look under Help > About. It will say registered to Giveawayoftheday.com.

I use a lot of graphics programs: Paint.net, RealDraw Pro, Dogwaffle, Photoshop, just to name a few+, and this program is awesome! It's an ICON maker! You can't compare apples to oranges. However, because I use the sizes 256 x 256 and 512 x 512 most often,(not for icons) which is possible in this, I decided to check it out! What I like about this program is its graph! Makes it easy for me to line things up better with my old eyes!

It's a great program, and I gave it a thumbs up! It is a bit pricey though.

Thank you GAOTD and Aha-Soft!

@ post #2 from Free Everything: Wonderful to see GOTD graced today by an arachnologist who for our pleasure has recalled his memories of how web sites were in the 1970s. I’m no expert on spiders, so was entirely unaware of the significant modifications to the web designs at those sites, these past 40 years. I always find something new of interest on GOTD so sincere thanks to Free Everything for his specialized, expert insights.

And now, to computers, and today's software. More like a fully fledged Paint program than a simple cut-down editor, this really is an absolute treat, beautifully engineered and typical of best-in-class software in that there's a lot of power under that hood and a heck of a lot of user controls and choices.

The developer is to be congratulated on a matured software that works right out of the box -- not something you can say of every offering on here -- and which is as clever in its execution as its concept: I've previously checked out other icon creation and editing tools and not one of 'em has come within a country mile of the elegance of this offering. Kudos to GOTD, then, and to today's developer.

** As to install and activation difficulties: this is getting to be a fairly familiar problem and may, in part, be due to the wording of GOTD's standard Read Me text file (though I'm by no means certain of that.)

That Read Me states that you should Unzip the package you`ve downloaded and install the software by running Setup.exe.
What it doesn't say -- and perhaps there's no need to in every case?? -- is that "install" means just that. And nothing more than that.

Unfortunately, just about every software offered here concludes its installation process with an option box already checked to 'launch now'. Leaving that box in its default state will do just that. . . but launching and running isn't what the Read Me text file says at all.

Thanks to the excellent advice of another GOTDer on here, I've found it best to uncheck that launch option during installation and instead, go back to the unzipped folder and click Activate. Then, when I do 'launch' the software for the first time, it comes up registered to giveawayoftheday -- as is the case here.

Hope that helps someone?

@2.. Don't laugh too hard. I find it amazing of the 3rd graders today who can't do any webpage design unless it's "point and click". Experience in the shop is paramount when some new wiz kid with a mouse can't edit a simple page error without a mouse. Now that's what I find amazing. ;-)

On topic: Program is a little rough in the UI but isn't a bad tool to have around. However, @1 is right. The freeware pro is a better tool to have in the box. Thanks Goto

#21: I, too0, was a bit confused by the activation process since I opened the ZIP file and ran the activate program from there. No good! You MUST extract the contents of the ZIP file to a folder, then run the activate program from that folder. Works fine.

The program itself is great. To those wondering why some people leave negative comments without trying the program first - typically they are the competition trying to boost awareness of their own creations. Folks presenting alternatives often are making money by doing so - for example, sending you to their website to get more information on alternatives is a way to get traffic to their sites to boost their advertiser revenues. So take such comments with a grain of salt, and make up your own mind.

Again, this program is great!

@Deacon & other bewildered people:
Yes, you have missed a critical step. Read the "readme.txt" file more carefully (& in the future, too). It says to run the "Set-up.exe" file & then run the "Activate.exe file". Make sure that the program is closed when running "Activate.exe" file. It should work.

As a former graphic designer, I can tell you that most professional GD will not use such a tool as this one. Professional icon creation usually starts in a vector program such as Adobe Illustrator and then finishes in a editing program such as Adobe PhotoShop. Most of us will use Adobe software to do the job because we naturally will own the software, so there would be no need for an icon-editor software. But if you are looking into creating some professional icons without Adobe's expensive software, then you should download this tool. If you want to make some great looking icons, then you should install a vector program such as Inkscape to go with IconLover. Or if you just want to make some small icons(16px-48px) for a toolbar or program icons or something like that then IconLover is all you will need. You will NOT find an icon-editor with many features that IconLover has to offer with the exception of Green Fish Icon-editor or some other similar tool. And to add to that, there are not many free icon-editors available which are worth installing.
This program would be the PhotoShop part of creating icons; adding touch ups, filters, sharpness, etc. and maybe create a 16px version for your large 512px/256px icon. And the unique function that a real icon-editor has is that it can create Windows icons. It can package all of the different size PNG icons into an .ico file.
$39.99? Well it not bad considering that popular icon-editors Michael Angelo can run up to $80 and Axialis can go up to $70(recently it has gone down to $50). IconLover has many of the same functions as those.
If you are looking into seriously making some icons then it would be foolish not to download and try this. It is a good tool for amateurs and can be used professionally when teamed up with Inkscape(or any other decent free vector/3D program). It is user friendly for beginners and has a familiar set-up that many GD are use to. The only free "true" icon-editors(programs without the need of a plugin) are GreenFish Icon-editor, IcoFX(the old free version 1.6.4) or AHA-soft/SibCode's own stripped down version of IconLover, SibCode Icon-editor.

Recommended software to accompany IconLover: Inkscape(inkscape.org) & Toolbar Paint(www.donkeysstable.com/toolbar_paint.htm)

@#19, smiller: Read the system requirements! This program is not for Mac. It's a Windows software that can create icons which can be used on Macs (among others).

The weird thing is the readme.txt file does not contain the registration/activation instructions. On installation I got the 30-day trial version. There are two buttons on thetoolnar saying: "Register" and "Get registration code" and on clicking the register online link I got this page:
http://www.aha-soft.com/iconlover/reg.htm which asks for " $39.95 or 29.00 EUR" to buy IconLover.

The "Get registration code" button prompts for your name, email and key, with a link called "Click here to go online and get your registration code", which leads to the ditto page above: http://www.aha-soft.com/iconlover/reg.htm which asks for " $39.95 or 29.00 EUR" to buy IconLover.

Did I miss a critical step?
Can someone please enlighten me as to how to get the
