~~unscrupulous software vendors make it appear that recovery depends upon the type of file, this is a total fallacy.

Not really. A fuller understanding of the various ways in which data recovery works might help.

~~When a file is written to the hard drive it merely writes zeros and ones nothing more, the operating system knows where they start and if fragmented where the various pieces are and that is more or less it.

Yes, the file system does record where files are but that's not all there is to it. When that information is missing, it's still possible to find deleted files.

The data recovery program will scan deallocated sectors (deleted files) looking for file formats that it can recognise. If an entire file was written to contiguous sectors and the file format allows some way to determine the length of the file then, once you've found the start, there's a decent chance that it can be recovered.

The more formats that it understands, the more files may be recovered. With a complex file format the higher the chances of the recogniser being incomplete implemented. That may lead to unscrupulous software vendors making claims that ought to be qualified.

This software is great. I just paid $180 for a store to try to extract my honeymoon (July 2011) pictures off of my crashed harddrive. (The drive crashed before I was able to back the pics up off the drive) They couldn't find the desktop directory. I used icare - the deep scan mode and it was able to pull off all the pics. If you want to pull off individual files without directory structure, its great.

I found 6 things I didn't like, otherwise I'd say it is a worthy product to buy:

1st: If the REGISTRATION button was on the first panel, it would NOT cause so much confusion. Look at all the negative coments about it. Other programs have it where people can register it quite easy. This is a bad flaw for your product.

2nd: It draws from files that are NOT deleted and adds them as copies to the recovered list as copies.

3rd: If a file is totally corrupt, it can't be restored and you're out of luck.

4th: It won't allow you to save files to your C Drive, only an outside drive. I'd prefer a program that allows you to save on your C Drive. This really annoyed me a lot. It would have been a waste of money if I didn't know this.

5th: A product that is not 100% ready for sale should be listed as FREEWARE until all the glitches are completely eliminated.

6th: You have a search button to find files by name. It searches for files not by the original name, but by names the programs creates for each file. This is an inconvenience.

Otherwise, the program does [basically] what it is meant to do. I would not buy this, unless the programmer can overcome such problems. I'm glad GiveAwayOfTheDay makes things available, so that people can actually see whats what, and see's what is worth buying.

I uninstalled the program

This is one giveaway that I have always recommended to grab whenever possible. If you have installed a previous version, the previous version key still seems to work automatically.

Yes, iCare does organize itself by function (i.e. starting approach to recovery) to change the order of search strategies, so this confuses some users, but it is a valid design approach.

For those who say that this doesn't work (e.g. comment re .MOV files) - no undelete / recovery program will recover a fragmented file! Read some of my comments with previous giveaways of recovery software for more info. Defrag on a regular basis.

Thanks giveawayoftheday & iCare.

When I try to run setup.exe, I get, "Giveaway period for this software is over"? Never ran into that before. Computer date/time are correct, if that makes a difference.

Anyhow, downloaded version from icare's site & that suffices.

---

It should be better.

There are enough things wrong with the UI that it should be better.

Some files are marked with a "d", no explanation.
Search by date, the from/to date boxes are truncated.
Virtually no right-click options.
No mouseover of various icons so you know what they do.
No method to rearrange column order.
Columns can be sorted, but sort order is not retained when you change to a different directory (or if you return to the prior directory). So you need to resort after each & every directory change.
Appears it lists ALL files, including deleted files. Never understood that. Why not list only deleted files? (OK perhaps you want to "recover" visible files too? But that's stretching it IMO. At the least, an option to only display deleted files.)
And while we're at it, where are the Options? Why can I not decide what RAW file types to look for? Why do I have to look for "MOF" files when all I'm interested in are "PDF"?
File Preview is not bad, but why not be able to jump to the next file without having to close Preview, clicking the file, then clicking Preview again?
Recovering a file(s) does not deselect them. So if you recover some, then search through another folder & select a file or two, then those two files plus all the earlier selected files are recovered (unless you go back & manually deselect the earlier selections - assuming you know which were which, which you likely will not know after traversing the dir-tree after a while).
Column data; size, type, times, should be padded. Would make it more readable & understandable IMO.
Support Center button opens IE regardless of your default browser.
The "Save to" folder is not remembered, so each & every time that you click Save Files you also need to specifically provide a location. So if you're picking & choosing & saving one here a few there, specifying that location gets old, quick.
If you're selecting files to recover, individually, from within the file browser box, & then if you happen to inadvertently click an upper level directory box in the dir-tree, all directories/files in that tree are selected, wiping out all of your individual picks. And in the same way, you say oops, & deselect that upper level directory box in the dir-tree, all directories/files in that tree are deselected - including all of your individual picks. So one slip & all your selections are wiped out.
There is a size limit to Preview, but gives no information at to what it is? In the same way, even for a larger file, if it only gave the first few hundred bytes, that would be better then nothing.
Find By Name does not find/present found files in a "flat" listing, instead traversing one by one, from directory to directory. So you can't find (all at once) all files "bob*.*".

These same shortcomings existed in the 3.6 version offered before.

It should be better.

Massively and unnecessarily complex. Take a look at Recuva for an example of how to make an app like this user friendly. Although this isn't helped by the endless broken English, eg "Patience is appricated since it will definitely pass", "Are you sure of abandoned files", etc etc

Also it was showing me EVERY file on my computer, not just deleted files. Maybe I missed a setting somewhere to filter them but that is just stupid for a file recovery program!

I also have chosen one of the recovery modes without seeing a registration section. I notice I had the software from last year and even after I had uninstalled both last years and this years program and reinstalled the program again there was no registration section. I guess the registration is in the registry so there is no need to reactivate the software again.

Thumbs Down

Simply for the fact it seems to only be able to recover some predefined categorys, like zip, Icon, Cursor files. So far I have not seen any indication to as how much of the file it can recover. Before I recover some thing, and this can be a lengthy work if there is much to recover. I like to know if it is worth it. If it is zip files and they are overwritten, there is much likely they will be a waste of time. Basic for all I know, those files found can be wiped (filled with random data). I actually do wipe my space from time to time, and have the file names scrambled. I found that this give less older possitives, and lets one focus on the more right file to recover. It can also, depending om wipe software and recovery software make a smaller, but much more accurate list of found files. The market have other recover softwares, both free and less costing, that tells you how much the file can be recovred by, but also lets you look for ANY file. Todays give away is very basic, so basic it alsmost can not be called a recovery software, but the price tag sure can be called a PRICE. Its good for a giveaway, but not to make a buy.

Helium2 @#25 - Ah you mistake me. Whilst pointing out that backup/restore was likely to be a speedier option I did draw attention to likely realities. Pity the poor soul, who's backup disc gets corrupted, eaten by the cat etc (Are you listening #24). My intent was rather to spur discussion of ways of making recovery more speedy (and effective), perhaps raising iCare's game thereby.

#29 - Briefly today's Data Recovery appears to do all that Format Recovery does and more. You'll only find the Format version on their website if you search for it specifically {curious}.

All - It would be useful to know if #35's experience re format recovery failure is shared elsewhere.

(One of the nice things about most (paid for)recovery software is you can try before you buy (when you really need to). iCare will let you save huge 32 k files for free anyway . And it says here on the website "Advanced and unique deep searching and scanning algorithm that recover lost files in seconds" I don't think we're quite there yet.)

You state that it cannot recover Word files; unscrupulous software vendors make it appear that recovery depends upon the type of file, this is a total fallacy. When a file is written to the hard drive it merely writes zeros and ones nothing more, the operating system knows where they start and if fragmented where the various pieces are and that is more or less it. The extension of the file tells a system or the program how to display it, if graphic, or how to play it if audio and so on. It can be compared to a newspaper were letters of the alphabet are grouped into articles, sometimes at the bottom it says continued on page whatever, in hard drive terms this is fragmentation. A newspaper uses letters of the alphabet and numerals, binary systems use zeros and ones. When a vendor states that its software recovers a certain type of file, he filters out all the others and shows only the type he claims it recovers. This means he can sell basically the same program many times but with different filters for each type. In my opinion a total and utter con!

This, like every other file recovery program I've tried, will not recover .mov files (recorded by Canon SD4500 IS digital camera) that were deleted from a fat32 partition on an SDHC card. It finds them, but they are corrupted when recovered. No files were saved to the card after the videos were deleted.

This is a great little software app. I LOVE that it installs on a Flash drive. I can move it from machine to machine. #31-not true. I just tried it successfully on 2 different machines. I did install it directly on the flash, maybe that's the catch.
Sometimes I delete pics from my camera's CF card but wish I hadn't. Now, where ever I have access to a PC with a couple USB ports free, I can recover them. Again, I just tried it and it seems to work for me. It does take a long time to read tho-, but I guess that's a fair compromise to recovering lost treasures.

I had no such problem with Win7-64 bit.

If you open the software after install, and attempt to run a process, a "Register" button is highlighted. Click on this; paste the code from the ReadMe file; and everything operates as it should...

Granted, there is nothing to tell you that you must attempt to run the software, but it works.

No problem installing and registering this software.

For those of you who have the "trouble" of registering, just click on any recovery option, such as "Lost Partition Recovery". Then look at the lower left side, there's a yellow "Register" button. Click on it, enter the serial number. It will still say "Unregistered Version". Close the software, re-run it, and it will not show "unregistered" anymore.

As for the overall quality of this software, I still haven't got time to fully test it yet. But I don't think this is a 100% accurate software as it pointed one of my deleted .jpg file as a PDF which I also have deleted from my smartphone memory card.

Work as good as free solutions available online (e.g. Recuva, Pandora, PCI file recovery, etc). It recovered deleted files.
It did not recovered any files from deleted or formatted partitions.
I have tried paid recovery software (e.g. Diskinternals,Ontrack, etc)that do really recover deleted or formated partitions. They might cost more (3x to 6x) but they do the job.

My previous experience with this software was a total revelation. My intent was to test file wiping program from SourceForge by the name of “Eraser” which normally supply absolutely top notch programs. I used Eraser to wipe unused file space, my assumption being that this would include deleted files, then I ran this program.
It produced a huge list of files some of which had not been seen for months, some that had been deleted recently etc. Quite frankly I found it hard to believe my eyes; one thing it did show is that it is extremely difficult to make files unreadable.
I was hoping to repeat the same experiment today, but unfortunately Eraser would not install, a net framework fault.
It is a very expensive program for the average user, but if you are a company who has lost important data is probably worth its weight in gold.
From my previous experience I can wholeheartedly recommend this software.

I had an earlier version of this program from GOTD. I installed this one without removing the old one without a problem. I didn't need to register, and the software opened just fine after installation. I'm using Win 7.

Unfortunately, it doesn't do what I'd hoped -- recover files on my NAS drive. It doesn't see the drive and there's no command for mapping a network drive. Oh well.

Before I get blasted I did read through all comments currently shown posted before mine and I don't see or can't figure out the answer to my question. So please bear with me if the answer is already here and point me to it instead of admonishing me.

iCare FORMAT Recovery 1.1 was given away on April 27, 2010.
http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/icare-format-recovery/#more-12076

I installed this version to a portable USB drive at that time.

1.What is the difference in the April 27, 2010 giveaway and today's?
2.Should I keep iCare Format Recovery 1.1 and install iCare Data Recovery also?
3.Is today's giveaway better than Format Recovery? I noticed there is a Format Recovery 2.2 that is also available for the same price as Data Recovery.

I'm so confused. Any help to clear it up for me would be really appreciated.

Thank you in advance!

I had a 1TB drive that I used with my Windows Home Server that decided to fail, but I plugged it into a caddy and into my laptop with the older version of the installed, and, like magic, it recovered all of the data and put it on another drive! I would definitely recommend this, even if you don't think you'll ever use it.

I had no trouble installing on a flash drive and activating. I just opened the file recovery function and the "Register" button was right there in bright yellow.
I'll do some testing of the app later.

@Simples> Sure, restoring a missing file from a backup is a wonderful thing, but in the real world there are not always backups available.
Even if there are backups, they can't be up-to-the-minute updated and might be useless in a lot of situations.

If you are the sort of person who doesn't back up you system and does need this sort of software, what are you going to do when you have a serious hardware meltdown and your hdd is physically fried.

Ain't nothing as good as a proper backup.

To those who are having troubles registering.

If you had a previous version on your system, you might not have to register this version, therefore you were already registered for that version, you don't have to go through registering this version. Only time will tell.

I had version 4 installed from a previous GOTD. I didn't uninstall it! I decided to install this version on a USB. Installation went without a hitch. I didn't see any register button, so followed the instructions to do a recovery. Still nothing for registering. Decided to check out my previous registered version and found that it had been updated to this version 4.5.2.

Hope this helps. And as mentioned in my first paragraph, only time will tell.

I don't often recommend software like this, but this program impressed me the very first time I used it, to the point that I recommended it to the computer company I work for, they purchased a license for the shop and we have used the program many times, increasing the profit margin of our shop, $70 is a bit steep of a price for an individual, especially when the average person may only use the program once or twice, but it does what it says it does and remarkably well in my opinion

Finally...

Reoognises all drives including those not mounted but does not display the names for all.

File preview seems limited in the number of file types that can be displayed and it can't look inside .rar/zip files.
Consider being able to link to an alternative viewer and/or state of deleted files. Add a right click option to open file.

There is some degree of file damage reporting but not a to files (not reported).

Overall, iCare does much of what you'd expect it to (it recovers what it can very well) but there are certainly ways in which it what it does do well could be made easier to use.

Improving the appearance wouldn't hurt. File preview handling could be much better, search by content and being able to save a scan would be useful additions.

Thanks for a useful alternative recovery solution, GOTD

How to register iCare Data Recovery Software
Step 1, Run the program and select a recovery module to go.
Such as Lost Partition Recovery-Deep Scan Recovery.
Step 2, You will see a screen with "Register" button, click it.
Step 3, Enter your license code from the Readme File in Setup folder.
Using Windows XP I tried Deep Scan Recovery.
I am looking at two hours and thirty minutes before done.

:And with one bound he was free:

Checking memory CPU usage shows that iCare is using around 25% of my processors time. It might be helpful to be able to give it greater priority (when you're desperate to comment on the program's virtues for example).

However, it seems you can run more than one instance of iCare at once. So I now have two iCare's each using a quarter of my CPU time. Opting for format recovery this time (19 minutes required for a 60GB SSD sector)....

Stopping scan when you get bored allows you to view what has already been scanned. You can filter by file type, size and date and by name (but not by text content) and the preview works well (Alternative list and thumbnail views). The program adds a tabbed window for each search (but doesn't seem to give details of the search parameters were

{Ignorance on my part - Is deletion recorded as a modification? If not would deletion time be a useful stat?}

There is no option to save the current state/list of files of the scanned directory, so if you forget to restore one of the files you really wanted, then you have to go through the whole process again - ugh).

Suggestions
Add ability to search for files by content
(Have option to filter) searchable file type list by those that are actually present.
Add option to for auto preview window
Show search parameter bubble when hovering over search result windo tabs
Make it possible to save the 'image' of the scanned folder(s) so that you can resume recovery if necessary (a much loved feature of Easy Data Recovery).
Spell check!

The message which pops up during a scan:
"Building lost file trees may take hours if the disc is large. Patience is appriciated {sic} since it will definitely pass." is definitely worth a bonus point (but adds weight to the last two suggestions).

Elsewhere: 1 hr, 36 mins to go.

{Interestingly, the second instance didn't show the register button, even though I haven't registered yet.
