For some reason it will not play audio when converting .mov files. I tried converting it to other formats and even to just a audio file, but will not work. When trying to convert to audio, it just tells me there might be insufficient space or rights to do so.

@70. I don't have a definite answer for your Q, but I think such companies may reproduce the video in the new HD format. Physically, the HD picture has more pixerls than the SD. To convert the SD to HD the program has to add the extra pixels. Smart programs will try to figure out the extra pixels, based on the existing pixels (at SD). It will never be the same quality as if it was created in HD from scratch.

If it was 'impossible' to convert SD to HD, then don't you think new releases of old things in HD would also be impossible and hence fraudulent? There are a lot of old movies, released before HD even existed, (The Lion King, etc, etc, etc) that are now being sold on blu-ray as HD... It's not impossible to convert, if you have the proper equipment. Although, I highly doubt a program like this would work nearly as well as the professional grade stuff that the big movie companies do.

I recently tried a similar program to this from another discount, giveaway site,at a better discount than what wonderfox are offering for their product, and you do see an improvement of quality if you zoom in, less pixelation. But apparenly this technology works best if there is more movement in a video,if it uses previous, next, frame to upscale.Though I have not tried this software as I don't need it, I would advise as some have earlier to turn off auto-update as wonderfox site say's this will update to the next version. Then you will lose it or have to buy it.

I just downloaded it and had a try, it works fine to convert my AVI files to MP4 till now. As for the SD to HD conversion, the best part of it is that I can change the parameter settings, resolution and aspect ratio freely, the high-quality output video can only be based on excellent original effect.

Installed and registered fine on Win 7 x64. As noted by other comments here, the default install location is Program files, not Program files (x86) which it should be since it is a x32 bit software. However, that is easy to remedy simply by typing in "(x86)".

I will say that it is nice to get a serial key for registration without having to share my email address and waiting for hours for a reply email which sometimes never arrives. So, thumbs up there.

The program opened with no problem after having to navigate to the installation folder and forcing an icon to be placed on the desktop even though there was a check placed in the box during the installation to place a shortcut on the desktop.

The software seems to be pretty good. However, I am not fond of the default output folders being located in program files. There is a reason that location is hidden by default by Windows. This may prove to be an issue for the average home user.

I would also like to see a frame by frame option when editing/clipping. The program lacks control features in that respect.

Program installed and registered fine on WIN7 32bit. I tried the upconvert feature on one episode of Falling Skies. It left me a 6.96 .avi file with the original video name. Original video was still intact, but, it appears the upconvert doesn't work. Surprise, surprise. Reformatting videos is a function that seems to work though.
Take it for what it's worth folks....

I love this converter! I had 2.0 from a Give-away years ago, converted over to an SSD with x64 and haven't had it, so glad it's back. It will convert just about anything and it is one of the very few converters that has a sharpen tool which I find to be very useful to improve the quality of some crappy videos, I usually convert all my wmvs to mp4. Wish it had drag and drop function and more of a choose of resolutions (it goes from 900 to 1500kps with nothing in between), but it works great. It's not the quickest, but the output quality is pretty good.

I don't know why people are so hateful about upconverting. Did you realize that large format advertising is the same type of an interpolation which makes these programs work? When you see a giant billboard size advertisement, ask youself if the picture was taken in ultra-billion pixel resolution... even the movie industry uses it.

The smoothing of sawtooth edges with fake interpolated pixels is not as good as real pixels, but I was taken back by the lack of knowledge in this group.

I'm getting really weary of amateur know-it-alls who say it's impossible to upscale SD to HD. They evidently know nothing of digital interpolation, a technique that's been used for years with still images, where you add more pixels, and therefore more information, and therefore more *definition* to an existing image. Don't tell me it can't be done. I do it a lot. So do many who work with digital images both as a hobby and as a profession.

But video? Frame-by-frame-by-frame requires the kind of engineering that no software can currently accomplish. What're you going to add to a frame if (a) it simply isn't rich enough in information in SD form and you need to use adjacent frames but (b) the next frame isn't exactly the same? If it's, let's say, a football game, how the heck are you going to boost the information / definition of one close-up shot of players running to the ball when all you can pull in by way of boosting it is data from an adjacent frame which happens to be a jump-cut to a wider shot of the crowd?

That's the problem all pseudo-upscaling software has and it's one that today's giveaway doesn't remotely begin to cope with. In short: its claims are nonsense, and its software 'engineering', such as it is (which ain't much) is waaaaaaaay short of what hardware engineering achieves. Fact is, a welter of academic research papers exist on video upscaling but nothing in this pseudo-maker's product blurb (and the maker is pseudo: this is a re-badged uRex offering) suggests that the research has even been understood, let alone implemented.

I've tested out this offering and the SD-to-HD promise is rubbish. But as for those who claim it can't be done at all though, try abandoning your ivory towers for a while, will you? And go here:

http://www.infognition.com/articles/what_is_super_resolution.html

Infognition hasn't mastered this by any means yet, but is a darn sight nearer the goal than today's idiotically re-badged offering of an existing, failed, app. Thanks GAOTD but definitely, no thanks.

The software seems to work fairly well. It only uses one CPU core though, so seems a bit slow. I didn't have any problems with audio sync in my testing.

It would be nice to have drag/drop to add videos.

I don't see any value in recoding SD video to HD resolutions, unless your TV/player does a terrible job up-scaling. It wastes a lot of disk, and doesn't add any quality.

For a 'Pro' version, it seems like there should be more options for higher-quality audio sample rates. Most top out at 160k. Many output formats/devices that support 6-channel audio don't have the option. For those that do support 6-channel audio, you should be able to keep the original 384k or higher sample rate.

Also, if keeping the same codec / sample rates in the output container for audio or video as in the source file, it would be cool to have the option to copy the input stream to the new container without recoding. I know of only one or two GUI converter applications that have that option, and it makes conversions VERY fast, with no loss of quality.

Some of the Creative Zen portable devices have a 320x200 screen resolution, so it would be nice if that resolution were available as an option for those device profiles (such as Zen .avi).

The 'Auto' aspect ratio option didn't seem to work right for me, as 16:9 video got recoded to 3:2, and looked 'squished.'

I also experienced an error creating the output file a few times, but it wasn't consistently failing, so not sure what caused it. Maybe there's a file handle being left open or something causing a locking conflict if you try and convert to the same output file/format more than once in a row.

I'll have to play with this one some more before I decide whether I'll use it much. The video quality seems decent, but the lack of high-quality audio options makes for pretty noisy sounding video.

Thanks GOTD for giving us the chance to try the software.

2 Slight Correction: It's no address of "offices in foreign countries" but their one and only address! No Chinese homepage or address are to be found with google. By the way I had and have friends from different democratic nations!
3 Constructive comments I appreciate greatly.
4 I feel free to post my considerations and knowing them, everybody is able to do as he/she likes. I myself am cautious in general and especially to avoid bloating "my" registry, using a professional uninstaller.
5 Unfortunately neither Jim nor anybody else was so helpful as to answer to my other questions (1 smart encoding and 2 delay video/audio).
6 I didn't want to mention it but half a year ago I bought a renowned commercial burning and video suite not much above the regular price of this software and without any smart encoding or delay problems. I like recording MPEG ts (transport streams) from TV as mkv (HD) needs too much storage (supplement to #1).

Upconverting by software is a useless effort (sometimes a waste of money).
It is like you have a small box of pebbels and somebody sells you a bigger box. Will you buy the bigger box, just because you have a big wardrobe where there is enough space to keep your pebbels in a bigger box ? Or will you keep them in the original smaller box ?

It seems installed A-OK on Vista Home Prem., X64. I say it seems because when Registering it showed "Registration" took but when I look under "About" Button like most Programs it does Not indicate if the copy is Registered or Not!!!

Also the Shortcut the install program generated was Shot ... no good, it had no Icon picture and it would not click ... so I created another one from "All Programs" button. And I could Not Delete the bad Icon, I suppose it will allow me after a Reboot ... let's Hope!

I have not tested the proggie yet ... I downloaded it because it says it has Cut, Edit options ... which I plan to use!

Thanks for the Freeware!

@ #7 (frog) Up converting in a PVR / DVR is done with hardware not software. If cable companies could do it with software, like this suggests, they definitely would as the hardware runs between 200 to 500 for them. Even the devices you get like at best buy for up converting is done through hardware because software, being simply 1's and 0's can't reproduce what the hardware does.

To upcovert a video means the software interpolating between pixels to increase sharpness and definition. Just in the same way as photo zooming software works.

Incidentally, on the whole this can work quite well. No magic involved!

Maybe this app uses technology that uses frames prior to and following each given frame to increase the clarity and make it appear to be finding pixels that were never captured. The FBI uses that technology to significantly enhance the clarity of video. I'm not saying this is the same exact technology the FBI uses, but perhaps similar technology.

Major skin problem, you need 20/20 vision for this software because it is in that silly stealth mode display type. Forget it if you have any vision impairment because you wont be able to see it.

The company should think about making their software disabled compatible, like the others that have similar interfaces. (only you can see theirs)

It's impossible for someone to convert a standard definition video into a high definition video because once you record something, that's the quality you get no matter what you do to it. You can sharpen it a bit maybe, but you won't get 720p or 1080p out of it.

This program is useless.

The new trial version of Windows 8, on a Dell Studio Laptop:
Installation went well, registration also went well as instructed.
I have not tested the program with all formats, but I have converted a few *.asf, FLV 800X600 format video from my backyard webcam to a 1920*1080 mp4 video. To my surprise, it has performed great. The program's trimming of video, and effects are easy and precise... So saying this, I give this program a thumbs up for a armature video editing tool. It does not have all the bells and whistles of a professional tool, but then 95% of us get into trouble and really don't need these professional tool. We want something quick, easy and can do a decent job. It has pass the test for this. thanks GWOTD and thanks Factory Pro :)

Thanks Moudy, I grabbed that one when it came by, I was going to install HD Video Converter Factory Pro to see if it was the better of the two.

Can it do anything different, such as convert at high speed?
If anyone can point out advantages in having both programs I'm sure visitors to this page would like to hear about them.

For those who don't know, uRex offers over twenty formats to convert to such as different Blackberry, Android & Nokia phone formats. Whether this is necessary, overkill or a gimmick I don't know but it looks impressive.

Of course it's up converting but that doesn't mean it can't make the video into a better viewing experience for those who playback on devices w/o up converting such as the new iPad.

Frex, the new iPad (gen 3) can display HD content but will not up convert from SD. I'm sure there are other devices which are similar. That makes this software valuable for playback on those devices.

This GAOTD is an excellend HD video converter, especially designed for NOOBS and home users since it has a very clean interface and it's very easy to use!!

What you have to do is simply import video clips (AVI, VOB, FLV, MOV, MKV and 3GP) you want to convert to HD format and then specify the output profile and destination (batch processing supported)...that's it!!

So this tool is definitely a KEEPER if you love watching videos/movies in HD format!!

Pros:
+ Recognizes and converts from Microsoft .WTV files (as written by Windows Media Center 7).
+ Has Clip/Crop/Merge functions.
+ Video output quality looked pretty good.
+ Easy to register.

Cons:
- Only uses a single CPU core.
- Slow. Converting 1 minute of 720p WTV video to 720p H264 at a lower bitrate took 5 minutes. MediaCoder x64 took 38 seconds to do the exact same conversion (using all six CPU cores).
- There's no way to enter custom values, so you have to choose resolution, bitrate, etc. from pre-defined menu choices.
- Under Windows 7 x64, installs to "Program Files" directory. It should install to "Program Files (x86)" instead, as it's 32-bit.
- Puts .ini files (and others) in the "Program Files" directory. In Windows 7, these can only be written to if you run the program as Administrator.

I'm sure I could have found more good and bad things about the software if I used it more, but the single-core issue (with the related slow speed issue) made it obvious that this wasn't the program for me.

why oh why don't you wish us to know your true identity?
a Chinese company masquerade as an American one, what for? if the product is good enough, I could care less for your origin.

Anyway, comparing this product to previously given here (thanks) Aiseesoft Total Media Converter and to the free and excellent Freemake Video converter http://www.freemake.com/free_video_converter/, today's giveaway lose big time. it lack the graphic acceleration which in comparison resulted over 5 times longer duration for conversion (for 7 minutes clip) and way too load on CPU. quality wise, it was not as good as the other two applications.

speed
fastest Aiseesot
second Freemake
last (by a huge margin) Converter Factory Pro

Quality
Best Freemake
second Aiseesoft
third Converter Factory Pro

I have tested it on Win 7 64bit with nVidia CUDA featured graphic card. if you do not have nVidia or ATI card that supports acceleration, I would recommend Freemake, without the acceleration, speed wise I am not sure it will make any difference, but the output, sure to be higher quality.

Good choice. Does what it says it does. Speedy conversion for web-resolution, low bitrate conversions. Slow for the SD-to-HD, high bitrate conversions. (An hour for converting a 4-minute 480-line AVI to 720-line MP4.) The results are good though.

I like the effect choices. You can adjust the amount of the effect and combine many affects in one conversion.

This is a keeper, worth paying for if priced right.

The program has features that you would expect from a commercial video converter and has some nice video effects (I particularly like the old film effect).

I converted a DVD video file to HD, it was a slow process (about 50 fps) and the result was slightly worse than the original.

There seems to be no way of maximising the program making it feel fiddly to use, video editors should always be full screen, for this reason I uninstalled it.
