Hi, thanks Mike (mike) ever so much, I had no idea of Your entry on something I posted here few days ago until today. I truly value Your Comment(s) because You not only address specific 'pleas' but give the rest of Users comprehensive lesson. I am not very fluent in 'video matters' dealing mostly with static Images, so I'm still learning, and as certain challenges arrive at my shores, no complains of shortage:) - I try to wrestle with tasks before me, not realizing fully I might go about something more complicated way than it's worth or needed..

I didn't have enough time to explore 'nature' of VOB Files, which naturally played well when watched on TV monitor over Christmas, but left with that dvd Copy on my laptop (the only disk went back with Guests) - jumped next onto the notion of converting these Files so they could be watched also on PCs/laptops and in other such 'cosy' environment. Now I know to best leave them alone, but perhaps after burning them to dvd disks (done finally today) - suggest to the rest of my family best media 'Players' they can additionally use to watch this video. Yes, it's quite old (years '92, '94, '97), but I believe my nephew, much more fluent than I - burn his father's original recordings from cassettes using most suitable methods, and it is I who never came across this particular (VOB) format before. Many thanks once more for Your attention, explanation and advice!:)

Ps.I burned my video on standard DVD-R 16x 1.7GB disk using ImgBurn placing actual big VOB Files only, and leaving behind what else was in that Folder - several VIDEO/VTS Files, that is IFO and BUP Files. What's on my dvd disks now has sound and quality of original dvd, from what I can see and hope that nothing else 'suffered' in a process. As for editing these separate video Files, merging a.s.o is at the moment left to my recipients..(most of them so young on that video, now in their 30s.., ah well, mama/auntie did her best for now:)

I tested WinX HD Video Converter Deluxe .The software is not bad .It allows some customizations, especially I like the filter of deinterlace.
But could be better with some advanced setings . Especielly i miss possibilities of dual pass of video or AMD APP /OpenCL / Cuda acceleration. All in all the program very good for less advanced users (y)

To Fran...

" ... Copy of old family video I obtained over Christmas – consisting of 4 equal in size (0.99GB) Files. All Files are in VOB Format, so before burning them to dvd disks to hand out further – I decided to convert these Files to more familiar MP4 formats to make it easier to be watched on more popular PC Players."

IMHO you might be better off leaving the video you've got alone.

OK, to start with the video's in mpg2, & if it's old video, unless it was film professionally scanned & encoded, it likely originated at best as Super VHS or Hi-8, which by today's standards are poor quality -- if the original was regular VHS, which was far more common, the quality levels are much lower. You can get a quick idea by comparing the quality to a current retail DVD, but look at it frame by frame rather than playing. The quality matters in 2 ways -- 1 is just a matter of personal preference, if you want it to look as nice as possible, & 2 is whether or not the effects of re-encoding, regardless the software, will reduce the quality to where no one wants to watch it. Encoding video is a lossy process -- you'll *Always* lose a bit of quality, & it's called generational loss. *IF* it is wanted/needed, you *might* [& I really want to stress *Might*] improve the quality a bit running the video through filters available for VirtualDub &/or Avisynth -- you can post a few frame shots or grabs as stills in the appropriate forums at videohelp.com &/or doom9.org for advice on the filters & settings. You'll also find loads of info on how to use VirtualDub &/or Avisynth with mpg2 video. Bear in mind that the player you use in Windows as well as your graphics hardware settings can alter the video's appearance, so as possible turn that sort of thing off if/when you're analyzing video.

That said, the only advantage to re-encoding the video would be to use AVC/H.264, which would both reduce file sizes & make it more compatible with current cell phones & tablets etc. PCs/laptops natively handle mpg2 much better than AVC. I can't think of much of any overall advantage to re-encoding the video to Xvid mp4. If it's in DVD format already, with .IFO & .VOB files in a VIDEO_TS folder most anyone can play it in Windows, & Windows Media Center actually does quite a nice job with DVDs on your hard drive. I Use Nero Express but ImgBurn can do quite nicely to burn that VIDEO_TS folder [if that's what you have] to a video DVD. If you want to extract the files to a single mpg2 file, that's fairly easy -- there are several apps/tools available. Note: mpeg2 video can exist in a .mpg container, that contains timing info & *usually* audio, or as a .m2v file without audio or the same timing data. It's pretty easy to mux mpeg2 video into .mpg files, or demux them into .m2v -- you do that to work with the audio separately, & some programs require .m2v or .mpg.

Finally you said that one player gave you problems seeking [fwd - rev]... If the nature of the video is something that you want to be able to repeat certain scenes & such easily, you might consider re-using the video as-is but redoing the DVD layout to include more chapters where you want them. That way the player could very easily skip to the exact points you want, & repeat those scenes as you want. Personally I'd use DVD Shrink to re-write the DVD layout to include just one, larger VOB file to make things easier, or rewrite it all as a mpg2 file, then likely import that into Sony DVDA or similar where you could set your chapters wherever, & add a menu or 3 if you like. I've seen versions of DVDA as cheap as $0 after MIR, or Sony offers trials -- it's been years since I tried one of their trials, but they used to be fully functional for 30 days, which would allow you to complete your project.

"my File was ready to be played – checked the quality of it, initially happy that it shrunk from 0.99GB to 781MB – but NO, the quality was nowhere near to original VOB Format"

Things that effect video quality & file size -- the efficiency of the format used, the bit rate set in the encoder, the quality of the encoder itself, the encoder quality settings you make, and the quality & format of original source that you're (re)encoding. AVC is an efficient format -- a DVD movie will take up roughly 1.5 or 2 GB encoded to AVC with a variable bit rate set to about 1.5, and look as good as the original on my Galaxy Tab 2 7. At the DVD frame width of 720 pixels, using square pixels in Nero Recode 10, with height varying after cutting off any letterboxing, I usually like to stick with a bit rate around 1.5 or so. [I actually convert video to create DVDs so I can use Recode, embedding DVD subs in the video file]. You can research [Google] the x264 AVC encoder that's included in the ffmpeg WinX & similar converters use -- it's a very good encoder, but you can't make many of the settings in these converters so you've little control over things that effect quality. A front end GUI for x264 like Simple x264 Launcher will accept Avisynth input [if you decide to use some of that filtering I spoke of], & let you set everything about how x264 encodes your video, but the process is not user friendly in that there's a lot to read & learn about those settings. Mpg2 itself is a decent format quality wise for video -- it's just not the most efficient thing around -- so the only remaining variable is the source quality. Judging from your file sizes you might have used Xvid [I don't recommend it] -- from your comment on the result I suspect that the quality of your source might be questionable.

"... choosing only ‘Use High Quality Engine’ (previously combined with ‘Deinterlace’) ... quality as appalling as first result...
... opting only for ‘Deinterlace’ this time – resulted in a File size 777 MB, ‘smoother’ outlines of everything on video, but horizontal lines and ‘jumpiness’ from scene to scene made it worst than everything I achieved so far!!"

Don't use deinterlace. There's not enough room here to explain it properly, so I'll just say don't.

"Briefly considered Giovanni’s suggestion of AVC, but the free Version only converts a little ‘teaser’ of large video File, that’s all."

You should see no big difference in the results because ffmpeg is still powering the process & you've not mentioned any frame resize [that I saw anyway], which can very from app to app depending on the code used. If you wanted to access more of the Xvid, mpg2, or AVC encoding settings there are apps or tools that let you do that, but they're harder because you have to learn what settings to make & how they effect the outcome.

#21: "Need better support for GPU acceleration technologies (NVIDIA CUDA / AMD APP Acceleration). This is a must for any paid conversion software IMHO."

Respectfully disagree on GPU assist being any sort of Must with free or paid software... it's not some sort of grail or anything. What matters is quality & how long it takes to transcode or convert. My personal experience is it's about as fast with GPU assist turned off as several other apps that I can verify use the graphics card. Using the GPU may or may not be any faster -- it depends on how the decoding, any resize, & encoding steps are coded -- & it can lower quality.

#30: "I tried the option to add photos. You cannot choose single photos. Okay, I took one with 4 images. Could not see the result, because of “abnormal termination, error code: -1″."

Added a folder with 15 or so .png files & it worked/works just fine.

Reinstalled the new version, but the YouTube video integration is still faulty: cannot give OK after the youtube video appears in the little screen. What's wrong?
By the way, it would be useful some features like brghtness, sharpness, hue etc. adjustments to.

#35: "Two questions/warnings in the context of “obligatory” update and unwanted silent installations (if any) combined with Digiarty offer:

1. Has anyone of you who already installed today’s offer, checked if the software does/or does not silently install(s) any “additional” programmes, sofware etc.?

2. Has anybody tried to ban this software from acces to Internet using his/her firewall? And if so, does the software work with Internet access blocked? ..."

Running, installing hd-video-converter-5-0-2.exe added 2 folders, one for the app in Program Files or Program Files (x86) [32 bit vs. 64 bit Windows], the other in [UserName]\ Application Data\ or [UserName]\ AppData\ Roaming\ [XP vs. Vista/7/8/8.1]. Uninstall info's added to the registry, but nothing having to do with running the app is added. No other software or anything.

As far as updating goes, I've no idea if the software checks for updates over time, but the app's config.ini file includes "Check For Update Index=0" on line 4, so perhaps it's grayed out in the options because that's been disabled? I did not try setting it to 1 or anything to see what would happen.

RE: firewall blocking... It works as far as conversion goes -- there's nothing the software needs on-line access for. Of course if you want it to access YouTube it has to connect to YouTube. Some security software will let you select IP addresses that are allowed &/or blocked.

Personally I don't do a lot with trying to save on-line video, but when I do I use separate apps dedicated to that function -- there are plenty. Then I normally leave it as-is -- I might re-name it but as long as it plays that's cool. If I want/need access to the audio/video contained in the file I use something like FLVExtract. About the only time I'll re-encode it is after editing [if I'm doing some sort of mash-up], or a few years back [before tablets & when cells were more limited] to fit & work on a small MP3 player.

The "fixed" version is still broken. It doesn't ask to update for YouTube URLs, but wouldn't always recognize any resolution/format for download.

A sincerely apology and giving a new download version link and longer valid activation time is quite rare for software developers, for that I give you Digiarty a +1 on first post and plus a thumbs up for your product.

Tip: If you already have a previous version of this software on your system you can keep it and install today's version also. I had previous version 3.12.6 installed from GOTD last year. Here's how--> Install new version in a different folder. I installed today's GOTD in a new folder marked 'WinX HD Video Converter Deluxe V5.02' . THIS WORKED!! I now have both versions on my hard drive. And the both show up in the Digitary Start Menu list.

If I decide one is better than the other then I can keep it and uninstall the other version. Time will tell which I like best.

Installed successfully, and decided to do a test run with a Youtube link. It failed to analyze the link, and instead opened a pop that requested I update to the latest build for 5.0.2

I declined and closed the window, and it immediately opened a browser to the vendor's site: http://www.winxdvd.com/hd-video-converter-deluxe/?force

Turns out that the latest build for this version V5.0.2 was done in Jan-3-2014, while the version being given out today was the December 26, 2013 build.

If the program can't seem to successfully analyze a link, part of it's core functionality, and suggests to get the most recent build for that to work, why then are the vendors giving away the previous build that is obviously not effective at what it claims to do?

Just for the sake of curiosity, I downloaded the January's build, for a test, and it was able to successfully analyze the link: yes, functional. However, it wasn't possible to enter the activation code for today's give away, as that option is absent.

So, the vendor is deliberately giving out a buggy version, so that users will hopefully pay and upgrade to the more effective edition of the same version 5.0.2

Hope I'm wrong, but since it failed to do the very first task of what it claims to do, I had to uninstall it.

What a crock. I grabbed this to see how well it works, including downloading. Installed and registered. Was told I get no updates. OK. Immediately went to You Tube, copied a URL for a video that I thought I would try. Pasted it in to the You Tube URL section and clicked analyze. A few seconds later I was told that I need to update to the newest version.

Needless to say, my opinion of WinX isn't very high now.

Installed the v5.0.2 from this page, activated and tried to download a YouTube clip. It says I need an updated version of the software and does nothing. It says it is Xmas licensed key. I used the information in #1 above to get the license key. Is this a tease? It really isn't the latest version? This is my first experience with GOTD and I am disappointed!

I confirmed the results of #10. An attempt to "Paste and Analyse" a YouTube video indicated an update was needed. When I tried to do that, a choice of Buy or Download was presented. I chose Download and the result was labeled differently, But, guess what?
The version info was still 5.0.2, and the Giveaway key was invalid.
Garbage; Bait and Switch; Indian Giver, many labels come to mind.
I will wait for resolution of the problem according to #14.

I am so often fascinated by those who remonstrate about the speed that a program operates while undertaking the process that it is designed for without actually mentioning any of the specifications of the hardware they are attempting to use the software on.
Generally as a rule the specifications of any software is usually presented in one of two ways or both. That is the minimal specifications and or the ideal specifications. For some this is quite obvious, for others it is not. I would suspect that to claim that something operates 32 times faster than previously would require at least the optimal circumstance for that to happen. For the uninitiated that means if you are using your convertor on a single core system with say 256 megs of ram and 250 g hard drive, it is going to be slowish to begin with and more than like not get any quicker (let alone 32 times quicker). Yes, there will be software out there that will be faster but the same theory applies, a classic model T with mag wheels is still only a classic model T.
As an afterthought on this topic maybe it would be prudent for GAOD to provide a place where the hardware specs and OS of the poster can be inputted alone with their post.
After after thought:
7# Frank - No, It cannot rip DVD’s, it is called a Convertor for a reason.
11# Don Hill – Built in self-destruct? Two thing. (1) Don’t use the convertor while on line. That way it can not check for updates and (2) You can’t click the cancel button when the pop-up occurs?
18# Trig – See above
19# Mark – In a word, no. However, it can convert a video file to a VOB then simply download the WINX DVD author and then burn your file. It’s all free.
22# Fran – Why are you trying to delace a VOB? You earlier post states that it is an old family video, the question would be, how old? Is it a digital copy of a VHS or was recorded on a digital camera? These are important consideration in what conversation settings you need to choose. Generally VOB’s shouldn’t need delacing. Read http://www.100fps.com/video_resolution_vs_fluidity.htm

Downloaded, installed, entered registration code - all seemed well. When I tried to download a youtube video, entered the URL, and clicked the "Analyze" link... A box appeared that told me I needed to update to the latest version, a browser window opened to the page where I could do so, and the YouTube downloader box closed (back to VCD homescreen). Even if it had worked, it seems very tedious to download a video, when I have an add-on that does it with one click. I don't know about the other program features, didn't bother trying them. If WinX or someone else can tell me what's happening and why, and how to fix it, I will continue testing and see if I feel this software is worth keeping.

Following the recommendation to install the software (which I was going to do anyway), I quickly discovered the "photo" button and tried to create a video slideshow of 30 photos of a property I have for sale. When I clicked "Run," I received the same error message mentioned in several previous comments - "Abnormal termination - error code -1").

I suppose one could work around this malfunction by creating the slideshow video in Windows Movie Maker, but that sort of defeats the whole purpose, doesn't it? This is an obvious flaw in the software which, if fixed, won't do US a lick of good since we aren't entitled to "free upgrades" under the terms of this giveaway.

I'll continue to play with the software using various videos I already have, and probably keep it since it's bound to do something that other converters can't do.

Notwithstanding, the balance of my previous comment stands as written. I appreciate all of the positive votes it received (Usually my comments tend to ruffle a few feathers here and there. I'm glad someone found my previous comment worth taking the time to read, and I'm grateful for everyone's support and all of the people who take the time to express their opinions and experiences here. I think all the video converter products we see given away regularly here on GoTD are based on ffmpeg as the conversion engine. They get a performance upgrade when ffmpeg gets a performance upgrade. It's mainly a question of which one uses the best default parameters for your purpose, and which one has the UI you prefer (although they all seem remarkably similar in that respect too). I like the WinX products well enough - about the same as the similar Aiseesoft products. I've been using them both for years, and they are equally quick and effective. But for consistent quality I still prefer Handbrake. I know it's just a matter of fine-tuning the parameters, but that takes a lot of work, so I'd prefer to use an app that has them well tuned in the first place.

install and.. uninstalled, why?
A) No GPU acceleration (in speed comparison, slower than Aiseesoft, Video to video and freemake video).
B) Quality comparison - lower quality than Video to Video
C) the "check updates" is set to "always" without changing possibility

Excellent Video Converter.
I have used WinX video converter for the past 2 years thanks to regular GAOTD offerings...which keeps the versions current.
And, yes, Wondershare, MediAvatar, and several other vendors offer excellent video converters....but, hey, WinX is free today...and the others are not!
Thank You WinX.

Thanks for comments and for the offer.
Two questions/warnings in the context of "obligatory" update and unwanted silent installations (if any) combined with Digiarty offer:

1. Has anyone of you who already installed today’s offer, checked if the software does/or does not silently install(s) any "additional" programmes, sofware etc.?

2. Has anybody tried to ban this software from acces to Internet using his/her firewall? And if so, does the software work with Internet access blocked? This could help to avoid updates resulting in the loss of licence for this version.

Why I ask question one is that when I installed another offer of Digiarty presented on this portal some weeks ago,I checked out all "additional" sofware included into the installation packet, but the programme silently installed a package of third party software that not only was useless for me, but changed a lot of settings in my comp and appeared hardly uninstallable. All in all I had to restore my whole system from the latest HD backup to get it work properly!!! (The detailed description of my "affair" with Digiarty’s previous offer may be found on this forum).

Since then, I am very, very cautious when it comes to the offers of Digiarty that once I considered pretty decent software provider.

#5: "I tested this and another one of the many video converters, which showed up on GAOAT.
- A 1.2 GB .wmv video (res 1280×720) to a 619 MB .mp4 (res 720×480) file in min 11:54. The Aiseesoft Total Video Converter Platinum (GOAT Sep. 2013) finished the same task in 7:35."

If/when your output file is AVC/H.264, you can check the results with the free MediaInfo, & that *may* show some of the x264 command line arguments that were used. Often a ffmpeg-based converter that's a lot faster uses faster encoder settings, though again that may or may not show up as a difference in the MediaInfo window. The x264 encoder built into ffmpeg has loads & loads of possible settings -- one of those is speed vs quality, which is an either/or proposition, where as quality increases speed goes down. As long as you're happy with the results at whatever speed setting that's cool. What you need to look for IMHO are all the other settings as well as the specs MediaInfo shows for the file. If you've been using converter "X" & the results play fine, look good where you want/need to play them, & then along comes converter "Y" which is a lot faster, if the stuff MediaInfo shows you is different, that file out of converter "Y" may not play, or play as well as what you've been getting out of converter "X".

If your output is Xvid there are different encoder settings too, but since Xvid uses so much less pre & post processing than AVC, they're not nearly as critical for playback. You can dig up some comparison tools on-line to put some sort of numbers to before & after accuracy, but for general, at home use, personally I think quality is very subjective & you being happy with the results is what matters.

#11: "this giveaway has a built-in “self destruct” with the lack of the ability to stop the program from checking for updates."

You probably are running [or should be anyway] security software with a firewall -- just set a rule that the app can't connect on-line, & it can check all it wants with no ill effects.

#12: "I need a video converter which can deal with subtitles in foreign languages, especially with the accent characters. This one can’t do it, so it is not good for me."

Subs are either graphics or text based -- graphics-based subs are used on DVD & Blu-Ray movie discs -- text-based subs are used during creation & editing, & as long as the file name [not the extension] is the same as the video file, they can be played/used by a lot of players when they're in the same folder next to the video file. Most ffmpeg-based converters only *burn* subs permanently on the video, whereas embedded or separate subs can be switched on/off. Text captioning can be embedded in mpg2 files, graphics based subs can be embedded in .mp4 or .mkv, though the number of players for either are limited. Graphics based subs can also be included in .m2ts [used for Blu-Ray] & of course the VOB files used on DVDs. When the video might be re-sized by the player, e.g. used on your PC, tablet, & cell, graphics based subs don't look as good as text based subs that the player renders. Use BDSup2Sub to re-size graphics based subs before embedding them in a video file or muxing into an mkv container etc. Use SubtitleEdit to OCR graphics based subs to text.

Now, special characters... Graphics based subs can be anything -- they don't even have to be text. Text based subs can use &/or contain special characters as long as the text file is unicode -- saving/creating a unicode text file is a separate step in something like Notepad. Software for dealing with subs &/or captioning *may* include restrictions on what formatting is legal, & since text-based subs are simply text files with special formatting provided by certain characters [it's similar in that respect to HTML], you can run into issues converting one format of text sub to another, &/or if you want to display a character normally used for formatting purposes. Since loads of video software comes out of Europe stuff like accented characters aren't often a big problem, though right -> left or top -> down reading may take a bit of hunting & trial & error to find software that works.

#4: "Having said that it did hammer all my CPU’s four cores even though I have a graphics card and at medium quality it estimated it would take around 50 mins to convert."

Using all the CPU cores is what you want -- in fact the closer you can get to 100% CPU use the better. Encoding video the same amount of calculations or work is going to be done whether you use 10% or 50% or 100%, so you want the higher usage to go ahead & get it over with. That said, you'll very rarely hit 100% unless you've got a single core CPU -- that was one of the problems when they 1st came out with dual core processors, much lower CPU use, & the percentage number became a measure of how good the software was, the higher the better.

On GPU assist...
Very briefly there are 3 types of assist possible -- DXVA [Direct X Video Acceleration], proprietary methods of accessing the GPU [Quick Sync, CUDA, & Avivo/Stream], & OpenCL. The max amount of assist in all 3 categories depends on the hardware -- with add-on graphics cards the more expensive the card the more powerful it is, while with built-in graphics it depends on both the ranking of the CPU & how new it is, as Intel & AMD have both been increasing capabilities. Working with video most software will use DXVA, normally at the least for reading, decoding, & playback, & while you may or may not see your video playing, all 3 steps are used to get the data that will be re-encoded. OpenCL like the name says is an open standard, a means of accessing the GPU's number crunching capabilities. AMD, Intel, & Nvidia all have OpenCL support, though Nvidia backed off OpenCL a bit in favor of CUDA.

Think of Nvidia's CUDA, Intel's Quick Sync, & AMD's Avivo or Stream as coding shortcuts -- in that respect it's a bit like Direct X -- where software might send a relative few calls to the GPU, getting more-or-less the same results as if they wrote much more code targeting the CPU. One catch is it's proprietary rather than open, e.g. CUDA only works on Nvidia. Another is that like DX, what you get is not always what you want, since you can't do everything that you can with regular programming, and so may have to write a bunch of code to transform the results you do get. Using this proprietary tech usually means slightly lower quality -- that applies to DX & OpenCL too, but not as much. How much quality is lost is hard to say, since 1) there have been very few comparisons published, & 2) software that concentrates on something like CUDA very often focuses on speed more than quality anyway.

Nvidia's CUDA is the most widely used, but then Nvidia did a Lot of developer outreach & support. Intel's Quick Sync is probably the fastest of the 3, but they've hardly supported it, so you'll find much less software using it. Another problem using Quick Sync has been that Intel's built-in GPU was rather anemic a few CPU generations back, & even with the latest, greatest from Intel, a lot of people still run add-on cards from AMD or Nvidia -- when you're running a graphics card you can't access the Intel GPU the same way as when it's powering your display. This is changing, 1st with a technology called Virtu, later with win8.1. Using either you *may* be able to use an Intel GPU's Quick Sync alongside Nvidia or AMD cards -- ffdshow & the LAVFilters may be your best shot, & then probably for the video decoding phase, which is after all a pretty important but often user-neglected aspect of transcoding video. That said if you're interested you'll need to do a bit of research & jump through a hoop or two setting things up to access Intel's GPU.

Now, the Achilles heel of GPU assist is that it can't do everything, plus you only want to use those functions that provide some benefit, so you still have to do a lot, often most video processing the old fashioned way, using your CPU. Getting the GPU & CPU working in tandem is hard, while getting them to work together in some sort of sync is much harder, especially when CPU & GPU horsepower vary so widely. Very often you'll see the CPU sitting, waiting to receive data back from the GPU -- often you'll see the reverse, with the CPU somewhat rarely sending data the GPU's way. When you're re-ecoding or converting video it's pretty rare to see both high CPU & GPU useage -- usually the CPU % will drop, & you might only see a small GPU % monitoring with something like MSI's Afterburner or GPU-Z. [One way Afterburner is handy is that it lets you use a fan speed curve for your graphics card. A graphics card's built-in, more-or-less hard-wired curve often focuses more on keeping fan noise as low as possible, which can mean a lot of extra heat released inside the case, raising CPU & chipset temps. Some graphics cards can almost double as space heaters.]

At any rate, check total (re)encode times & quality with GPU assist on & off. You might or might not see CPU % drop, you might or might not see GPU % rise, but quality & time to (re)encode are what matters. Something like Process Lasso might well come in handy. Watching, checking the processes for your security software can be a good thing -- I always put Bitdefender in Game mode & it helps. If it's been a while since you fired up or re-booted your PC, try a re-boot to clear the graphics processes & memory, especially if you've been running a game or playing video or anything like that that uses your graphics hardware. If you have video software that you regularly use & that gives you decent GPU assist, be wary of driver updates -- back up 1st in case driver changes effect that... I've seen both increases & decreases in GPU assist after updating AMD graphics drivers. Get & save a short video clip in the format & frame size you usually convert, then use that for all your testing -- that way you have a clear baseline so you compare Apples to Apples.

If you want a good program for ripping DVDs, I have found for me that "DVD Cloner" works best for this. I have used this program (and earlier versions of it) for a number of years and it makes excellent copies of DVDs. This is great for backing up DVDs so the kids can have copies of their favorites out in the car and we don't have to drag them back and forth all the time.

Compare it to other DVD rippers and to download the program. It's not free but it is a very good program. It's worth the investment.

I wish I had read #6 Lok Man Loong's comment before I installed this over my older version. I liked the UI of the older version better. This looks like it has less features than the older version too. However, that may just be that they are only shown as needed to give it a cleaner, less cluttered look. And, unlike #6, I no longer have the older version to do a feature by feature comparison to find out. I hope I didn't downgrade with this newer version. It will probably still do what I need, and most likely still has the former version's functionality.

Also, in my experience, Digiarty products are reliable and when I've needed support for their products that I've purchased from them, their responses have been prompt and effectively resolved my issues. Their online guides and help have been useful too.

I tried the option to add photos. You cannot choose single photos. Okay, I took one with 4 images. Could not see the result, because of “abnormal termination, error code: -1″.

I am trying to install on a windows XP 32 bits and he keeps saying I have to install a newer version.
I have the version 5.0.2. and is saying that it is the Xmas Licensed Key.
I assume that is the latest version, but it is not working.

Doesn't look like it will create a standard DVD from input, but it will convert MKV to MP4. Both of our disc players will read these on a DVDR, as I suspect most modern players do.

Really solid video coverter!

If your arsenal doesn't include this free - WinX HD Video Converter Deluxe 5.0.2, giveaway, grab it while you can. Digiarty makes some very respectable software. Although todays GOTD isn't the fastest kid on the block, the end results are [well] worth the wait.

Thank you all, for your comments, most appreciated.

Hi, FOLLOW-UP on my first post..
Converting 1 VOB File (0.99 GB) to MP4 Format and choosing only 'Use High Quality Engine' (previously combined with 'Deinterlace') - took again over 1hr, File was back to 781 MB in size, quality as appalling as first result (without checking any boxes on the right of Console)

Unchecking 'Use High Quality Engine' and opting only for 'Deinterlace' this time - resulted in a File size 777 MB, 'smoother' outlines of everything on video, but horizontal lines and 'jumpiness' from scene to scene made it worst than everything I achieved so far!!
So - NO GOOD converting my VOB File to MP4, using this Software anyway!

Last attempt - trying to see if converting VOB to AVI File brings better results..:
Output AVI File - 1.38 GB and quality horrible!

Guess I tried my best here testing VOB Files and I can honestly say - This Program is NOT for I needed it for. It simply failed.. and tested my patience to the brim!
Briefly considered Giovanni's suggestion of AVC, but the free Version only converts a little 'teaser' of large video File, that's all.

Might try something else in my spare time (what's left of it, lol), but with this Giveaway and today - I'm done.
That said - if Anyone can give me any advice on my quest today I'll be most grateful!

I got vers. 5.0.2 from the Digarty's giveaway on their site in December. Opened it just now and got a pop-up from within the program. It told me I was using the giveaway version of 5.0.2 and offered to let me upgrade to the paid version with lifetime updates at up to 70% off. I just needed to click "Cancel" and no update happened. The Check for Updates option in this version is set for automatic and grayed-out just like others have commented on here. Looks like the update check is used to trigger the upgrade offer. I opened it a second time and got the same pop-up.
Probably not an issue unless clicking "Cancel" is to much of an irritation to get FREE software.

Need better support for GPU acceleration technologies (NVIDIA CUDA / AMD APP Acceleration). This is a must for any paid conversion software IMHO.

Will this convert a mp4, mkv, or avi file into something that can play on a standard dvd player (ie. create the video.ts files etc.)?
