HAHAHAHAHAHAHA This is some of the most humorous Chinglish or Indglish or Ruskglish or whatever I've seen in a long time. Thank you for the great laugh ROTFLOL.

Seriously though - this could be the greatest developer's text editor since UltraEdit - but nobody is going to take you seriously because of the ridiculous attempt at a translation. PLEASE developers - if you're going to sell into English-speaking markets, hire a NATIVE-English-First-Language speaker/writer for all your copy-writing chores. They don't even need to speak your native language, as long as you can get a machine translation we can take it from there.

What has happened to the moderation? Nothing has been released for over 13 hours.
=========================
Downloaded, installed and registered without any problems (XP SP2).

I was most interested in their scripting as it touted using
Javascript as their scripting language. However, it looks
like more hype than substance. Has some nice features but
not much really unique that is not found in other freeware
apps.

Pros:
=====
Customizable toolbars (placement & content, vert & horiz)
Built-in HTML syntax checking (but a little flaky)
Javascript script engine (but no help doc for usage)

Cons:
=====
Error Prone web site [Makes one question the quality of their apps]
Dangerous "conversion" of Unicode files
Ludicrous Annual fee €24 (~$30)
Inconvenient access to scripts
Missing basic math functions: Abs,Floor,Ceil
"Rectangular Selection" somewhat of a joke - three steps to copy, no "RS" paste

Freeware alternatives:
======================
NoteTab Lite [http://www.notetab.com/]
Tabs, RegEx, Full Script language (automate not only text editing but
embed internet retrieval, on disk file operations, Windows registry
operations, on disk editing, and much more), customizable toolbars,
built-in multifunction calculator (cols as well as linear), block cut
copy & paste, edit GB files. Std & Pro versions available. I use this
app constantly (the paid version) and have written hundreds of clips
to automate normal text editing as well as internet downloading and
data extraction/processing. Also supported by active forums.

PSPad [http://www.pspad.com/en/]
Tabs, RegEx, Scripts

Notepad++ [http://notepad-plus-plus.org/]
Tabs, REgEx, Scripts, User defined language rules, syntax highlighting,
auto indenting

HxD [www.mh-nexus.de]
A powerful, small footprint Hex editor. Edit/copy files or raw disk media,
edit GB files, view RAM by active app.

TextConverter [www.sttmedia.com/textconverter]
[Just found this - from the website]: Multiple text conversions: char set,
char encodings, batch conversions, insertion, replacements, RegEx, etc.
The site also lists a number of other useful freeware tools.

It'll be shameful to NOT use vim or emacs as a developer. I personal use Vim.

When talking about a text editor for programming, it should be either Vim or Emacs.

I like that extensions can be coded in Javascript rather than Basic (or MockLisp). It doesn't bother me at all that the writing sounds like it was translated from Russian with the help of Google and a 1920's textbook; what does bother me is the character set handling that doesn't display the cyrillic comments in the javascript extensions properly and suggests strongly that only 8-bit character sets are supported. (Haven't found the documentation of how to write extensions yet, but have been too busy so far today to look properly.)

These comments are a treasure trove of recommendations for free text editors. I'm using PSPad right now (which I only found after hours of google searching). I'm pretty happy with it as a programming editor (mainly got it for the built-in hex editor), but I'll be trying out a bunch of the others that have been suggested to see if there's anything I'm missing. Many thanks.

I will pass on this one... The one year license and auto-renewer is just too far out! :o/

The screen shots *are* on there webserver.
Just view one of the small thumbnails. From the URL, remove "tm_" in front of the image name. (Right click in Firefox and select View Image).

This gives:
http://www.gridinsoft.com/images/screenshots/notepad_spellchecker.gif
http://www.gridinsoft.com/images/screenshots/notepad_autocorrection.gif
http://www.gridinsoft.com/images/screenshots/notepad_codefolding.gif
etc...

As others have noted... just poor unneeded php code :o(

I did try IntelliPad as another comment suggested. Uninstalled after I was unable to set it to use TAB character as TAB and keep a spacing equal to 3 spaces (how hard can it be???).

Now I use notepad++, bus miss an option to change to hex view/edit like in UltraEdit.

As usual Giovanni is um... brilliant.
What planet and from under what rock did these obscure developers come from / crawl out from? In today's world, for better or worse, they should learn english first and then C++, Python, Basic, Ada, etc ad nauseum.
But srsly, from Jan Goyvaerts site there's the ORIGINAL EditPad; EditPad Lite, EditPad Pro, and more... http://www.just-great-software.com/
And gee, if you want to code cheap html who would you torture yourself with a text editor?

Win7 x64
v3.3.2.9, Pro

registers simply with the provided key

installs into directory of your choice, 7 MB,
essentially self-contained it looks like

CHM help file, brief, but enough to get you
started

it's more a programers text editor rather
then something a "homeowner" would use on
a daily basis

seems full featured, plenty of options &
settings for you to work with

in a hex file, i cut a block from the top,
pasted it at the end, & seem to have lost
1-byte in the process? (second try & i was
yet 1 more byte short)

there a lots of these editors, pay or free,
so it will boil down to, "how do you like
the way it works" & if you do then it
should be fine & if you don't you try
something else

think I might love this 'lil notepad.

usually use webnotepad for html coding but gryffindor?...grind n soft?...(gridinsoft) notepad seems pretty cool.

even has templates and can predicatively start off some coding for you like a table in html, or PHP coding or whatever!

will definitely keep and play around with :-)

(am also impressed with notepad++ which have heard about but never got 'round to trying and finally did because referred to here so often today, thanks guys!)

...it even pointed out had left out the proper html code for the ampersand (&) symbol in my code ("& a m p ;").

For those looking for a way to write prose comfortably, add Focuswriter to Giovanni's list. It is like a cross between a text editor and a word processor. As long as you don't think in terms of pages and layout, but in terms of sentences and paragraphs, it is a tool that can liberate the essay or story you have bottled up in you, and save it in plain text or RTF.

On installation Avast gave me some alarms, but the setup could be sandboxed with no problems. The key in the readme.txt worked like a charm. Easiest installation to date in my experience! Kudos to the GAOTD team and GridinSoft for that one!

But I'm giving this a skip. It looked really promising, but this:

GridinSoft Notepad read UNICODE or UTF-8 file and translate it into ANSI mode so GridinSoft Notepad can edit it. When user want to save it to disk, GridinSoft Notepad will translate it from ANSI to UNICODE again.

That's really unwanted behavior. ANSI can be anything, there are mulltiple Windows code pages. Also, Windows code pages are not ANSI standard either. If this editor looks at the User's locale to determine which code page to use, then opening a document on a machine with a different locale will screw up the document's contents. There goes all the hard work...
[...] as well as the possibilities of flexible integration with compilers...

Couldn't find that option anywhere, the faq says nothing about this, helpfile is vague and the forum is a barren landscape. Promises, promises...?

Overall a really nice editor with lots of features. Comparable to NotePad++, my own default editor of choice. But the lack of native UTF-8 support is the main reason I'm giving this a skip.

This software is intended for people who can afford to pay for using it and not freeloaders. Sorry boys and girls, software developers are also people who need to feed their families and send their kids to schools and buy houses and cars and go on vacations, etc. just like everyone else. Now quit complaining and send your contributions through PayPal or equivalent online payment services. Sayonara!

Thanks to GridinSoft + GOTD.

The calculator using syntax was alright. I tested that. The usual priority of mathematical operators [* / + -] in calculation applies. Remember to use brackets to control the sequence of calculation.
The calculator is not a big deal. But may turn out useful one day.

The built-in spell checker is nice. But needs stronger dictionary.
I typed in "The quick bown fox jumps over the"
The spell checker was not able to suggest the correct word "brown" although it picked up the spelling error "bown".

In comparison, Google spell check was able to suggest "brown" from a drop down list.

I still use EditPad Lite (free) most of the time.

Their website truly is a programming disaster - too much .PHP that doesn't work and is not necessary in the first place. This does not bode well for a company (Ukraine) that supposedly specializes in PHP and other related programming. And yes, the screenshots simply do not exist. VERY POOR programming and web design.

You can use DownloadThemAll in Firefox to get the thumbnail images but they're too small (187 pixels wide) to be of much value.

A word of advice to non-English software developers:
If you want to sell your product to English-speaking users (or any other language) invest a few dollars into creating a website, instructions, etc. in an acceptable version of the market's language.

When in Rome, do as the Romans do. Remember that one?

Also, in this case, the prices of their products are exorbitantly high - especially for the conversion rate of US dollars to the Ukrainian economy!!!

The software is customizable which is great to adjust the visual settings to my needs. But selecting text with the mouse is a bit buggy. They need to fix this. Other than that, of cause there are alternatives, however I have my preference with a different text editor and will pass this one today.

When it comes to editors, everyone has their own personal choice, depending on their needs and budget.

For me, my standard text editor, is Notepad-mod, which is an alternate build of Notepad2, with new features like code-folding, support for 32/64-bit Windows 7 & 8, syntax highlighting for popular new languages like Ruby, and lots more. It loads up fast and is so stable, it replaces the dumb Notepad on all Windows machines I own. And need I say, it's free?!
http://code.google.com/p/notepad2-mod/

Notepad++ is a good freeware alternative to Notepad2, though I prefer Notepad2-mod for its relative simplicity. Notepad++ is better for bigger files (max upto 2GB, but I have found it choking even on 300MB files), though you should turn off syntax-highlighting before using it.
http://notepad-plus-plus.org/

My programming file editor of choice, has always been the awesome EditPlus, that has been around for ages, and lots a great community who creates plugins and syntax files for new programming languages. I find it to be extremely customizable (through cliptext files, keystroke-recording macros and document templates), and powerful (for instance, I enjoyed its WYSIWYG DHTML editing/browsing, and even used to debug and execute Perl programs from within it!). It is not free, but it gives quite a lot of bang for its buck.
http://www.editplus.com/feature.html

Textpad is another commercial programming file editor, that is also popular, and is good for large files as well (upto 2GB), but I don't like the fact that it uses non-standard hotkeys for default actions (e.g., search). I prefer my editors to work straight out of the box, without needing to reconfigure them for simple activities.

I recently heard of a new (commercial) editor called "010 Editor", which is said to be quite good:
http://www.sweetscape.com/010editor/features.html

For cross-platform tools, gVim, SlickEdit and GNU Emacs perform admirably.

Wikipedia has a good comparison list of text editors:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_text_editors

My suggestion to today's Giveaway promoters Gridinsoft, would be to move away from an annual subscription model, as it would have fewer takers and the competition in the programming file editor market is extremely fierce. Rather, try to foster an active community to support (and extend) your product, and periodically hold some contests and giveaways, and you'll find, it'll pay off in the long run. Your product looks good, keep improving on it. All the best!

UPDATE: I tried the software!

Please remove the word 'excellent' from my previous post. Actually, I think I was referring to the same product in a very old version which, at that prehistoric times (a few years ago), was a considered a good product. But now, it's way behind ANY competitor. Not worth a dime.

The product is very poor:
- Syntax highlighting: does not recognize python language (all text is black), cannot modify the colors (VBA is ugly).
- Hex view: view, not edit and only for binary files. Useless feature here.
- Evaluate function: laughable, can only do + - * / and ^. I tried sin(30): evaluated to -0.988031624092862, log(10) is unknown...
- Help: THere's a help file but it serves no purpose since it has almost no contents. Excepted for some kind of javascript, but language in itself is not documented.

Other than that, features are very basic, excepted for the SVN menu, but only if you have Tortoise installed.

Should I pickup a very light text editor, the simple but efficient Notepad2 would do the job. It is portable, only 740 KB, and truly freeware.

Thumbs down and uninstalled.

Another freeware text editor is DocPad [http://www.gammadyne.com/docpad.htm]. According to their web site: DocPad is a free alternative to Notepad. Although it fills the same role, plain text editing, it offers an arsenal of time-saving tools: block indent/unindent, bookmarking, case conversion, customizable toolbar, encoding conversion, file history, jump to line/offset, keyboard macros, print preview, search and replace, skinnable interface, spell checking, statistics, variable pitch font, and much more. It also includes a built-in calculator, calendar, and character map.

And like lots of other people have said, DocPad is truly freeware, not a subscription based program.

This is a text editor for programmers mainly.

My preferred text editors, with indication of some important (for me) features/options:
- Notepad++: lots of plugins (you can write your own); incremental backups; can modify the apparence of the cursor; regular expressions.
- Scite: run/compile command; high level of customization through .properties files; lua integration; can modify the apparence of the cursor; allow for multiple versions of the same compiler; regular expressions. Although I don't know C++, I still managed to modify the python lexer and compile it successfully with mingw. Unfortunately, the developper refuses to implement incremental backups. Also, the developper created the Scintilla component (on which Scite is based) utilized in many, many text editors (Notepad++, ...).
- NoteTab Editor Light: can handle VERY big (up to 2 GB if I remember well) files; very powerful macro language (easy to learn) that allows to create your own libraries with custom functions/procedures; incremental backup; regular expressions; and interesting features not found elsewhere. If you never heard of this true gem yet, then I urge you to discover it right away.

In my Windows boxes the stupid notepad is replaced with Notepad2. Then I have a special editor for python scripts, and another one for php scripts.

This said, GridinSoft Notepad is an excellent editor. Offered for free today, I'll download it and see how I can make use of it.

Do we all agree that annual software fees is NOT consumer friendly? It might be OK in the enterprise market, where you have a tiny cost per year per user multiplied by thousands of users in the multinational company... but for a consumer product, "selling" software that sets up a $25 charge per year to your credit card - and goodness knows how to cancel that! - is not in the spirit of giveawayforfree!

In going to the website to discover the actual purpose of this program (without the technical jargon), in clicking on the screenshot examples and one of the images in a tutorial, I got warnings and fatal error messages. NOT a good sign. If the page was written with the editor itself, it raises serious doubts. Then, to see the purchase price was for a one year license (automatically renewed) was a shocker. I can see renewing updates an additional year for a fee, but not licensure of the program itself.

The the GOTD setup procedure for todays offer, "Gridinsoft Notepad 3.3", offers a number of advantages for use in programing when compared with Windows' Notepad. In addition to the syntax checking feature mentioned above, Gridinsoft provides a 7-language spell checker and an engine for authoring scripts that goes way beyond the *.bat file capability that makes Microsoft's Notepad a popular website development tool.

Those that are considering configuring Gridinsoft Notepad so it will replace Windows Notepad when a call for Notepad is issued, should read the installation readme file that accompanies Gridinsoft Notepad and put into place the suggested precautions to keep from loosing today's offer.

The webpage indicates that UTF-8 files are silently transcoded to "ANSI" (windows CP 125x?), losing characters not present in the "ANSI" character set, then transcodes them back to UTF-8 on saving.
