Thank you for a very useful note pad. The features far outshine the regular note pad that you get with Windows OS. Things just get better and better

Want to know about text editors with LaTeX ability for example, Google "Text Editors+LaTeX". That was hard wasn't it? lol

@BillW50 - "First of all, Google Text Editors for free. What is so hard?"

Maybe I don't just want text editors for free, but want a text editor with specific capabilities I'm looking for? I can search for text editors, and then go over them all, one by one, by myself, to determine what does what. Or I can find someplace where people actually compare programs and features, and save a lot of time. Why not learn from other people's experience?

"Secordly this comment section is for the gaveawayoftheday program. Thus talking about other software here is off topic."

Not if the other software is one that complement, or compete with, the GOTD program. That makes it on-topic.

"If over a thousand people start writing here about their favorite free software, this comment section would become useless and unreadable."

We're still far from a thousand different commenters here, so I wouldn't get too worried. And you know what? If so many people will write about their favourite text editors, and discuss their comparative strengths and weaknesses, then this would be a wonderful comment section.

"Why does someone has to be told which software has it?"

I don't even understand the question. Are you saying that if someone looks for a text editor that can do A, B, and C, nobody should say anywhere which program has these features? If this someone gets here, nobody should tell them that either GridinSoft has all three, or maybe it just has A and B, but there's a different program that does C? Apparently I made you laugh a lot, but... are you serious?

"Gosh! Want me to hold your hand for you while you install your software? That has to be the height of laziness if you ask me."

Not that I'm asking you, it's just a matter of having way too many user accounts on too many places already, and so a lack of will to increase them if it's avoidable. Since I expect most of what I'll have to say here on GOTD will be in the comments, and not the forum, I don't want to handle yet another account. Not for the sake of a single discussion with you.

“Elimination thing” indicated in post #73, BillW50 (NLOL)…

1) When typing in Word Wrap mode (F2), periodically upon reaching the right margin, if a space is typed and the first letter of the next word begins on the next line as a wrap, the space is removed and the two words are joined to form a single word on the next line. For example, when I just typed “when typing” and reached the right margin as described above, word wrap eliminated the space to form “whentyping” on the line below.

Oh thanks! I never noticed that cdbourbon. I am trying the Lite (free version) and see if it still happens. So far so good.

Spell checker for the free version is at:

http://notepad.gridinsoft.com/faq.php

It too checks your spelling as you type. How cool is that?

Hi Yaron...

@BillW50 - “And reading through this comment session would turn into a full time job! I am sorry, but who has the time? If someone is interested in an alterative free program, just Google it.”

Yaron: There’s a fault in your logic. If nobody would mention similar programs when talking about any of them, and no search engine will manage to find the comparisons.

Fault of my logic? lol First of all, Google Text Editors for free. What is so hard? Secordly this comment section is for the gaveawayoftheday program. Thus talking about other software here is off topic. Other software is on topic at:

http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/forums/forum/8

Yaron: Mentioning similar programs adds value to this post. Sure, not for everyone. There are people who will be looking just for GridinSoft Notepad, and all the extra comments will be clutter to them. But on the long run most of the people who will get to this post, and others like it, will be looking for a program to do text editing with. And finding several such programs mentioned and discussed will be more useful to them then going and comparing them all one by one.

If over a thousand people start writing here about their favorite free software, this comment section would become useless and unreadable. As it would be as entertaining as like reading through all of your spam email. lol

“Now that isn’t to say that someone wishes that GridinSoftNotepad had this or that. This is perfectly fine IMHO. And this is what this comment section is for. As people wondering whether to download the current giveawayoftheday is worth it or not.”

Yaron: Exactly. But if someone else looks for the same features, it’s better to tell them which other programs have it. And someone who doesn’t care about these features, will similarly know that GridinSoft Notepad focuses on the things they do care about.

Why does someone has to be told which software has it? I can write books about this subject alone. I don't think anybody wants to hear about it. lol

“And not taking me up in the forum sounds like a cop-out to me. As you can use the same login and out that you use here.”

Yaron: Err… Posting here does not require login and registration. Just type the name and an email, and that’s that.
The forum requires registration, creating another username and password. It’s a hassle. And since for now I don’t expect to have much else to do with the forum, an unnecessary hassle.

Gosh! Want me to hold your hand for you while you install your software? That has to be the height of laziness if you ask me. lol

the export feature provided by gridsoft is faulty. they said we can export any file as a latex file. Well, I was expecting any text file to be exported into latex file by automatically adding the required latex tags that represent the actual formatting of the text. But it gives us an xthml file with an .tex extension.

Great effort by GAOTD team, thankyou guys. Just for the record, I never had problem with downloading, installing or activating the software provided.

Oh, and here is another addition to the nice choices for little NOTEPAD-like text-editors:

METAPAD
from www.liquidninja.com

free.

It's just a simple one. It's not a programmers editor. It does not have all the bells & whistles like this GridinSoft Notepad, but it opens FAST, and it might suit some people out there.

Keep in mind that no 1 program solves every use for all people. It's why we have tricycles, bicycles, mopeds, motorbikes, cars, trucks, boats, planes, and helicopters! All of those perform the same function of transportation, but they all provide some sort of variety. And there's no point in really saying that since you own a car you don't need a bicycle. Maybe not, but other people might like to have one. Some people even have both. Or several. Some people even have several kinds of bikes, and maybe a few cars. Whatever people want, is fine. That's what makes life fun.

*** FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS: ***

1. To activate the program, Read the README file and do what it says in there.

2. Aside from the README, there is often a program called "ACTIVATE.EXE" included in the download. RUN IT to activate the program.

3. When you run the activate program, Make sure you have internet access turned on and you have access so that it can 'talk' to the giveawayoftheday.com website. I believe it might need to phone home to confirm your activation. Make sure your firewall etc is not blocking anything.

4. If you still think it's not registered, not activated, or it still says TRIAL VERSION, or if it still says "nn days remaining", then QUIT out of the application program and open it again. If it's the type of program that minimizes to an icon near your clock (that area is called "the system tray") then you need to click that icon and exit that too. Sometimes just clicking the [X] box on the application window doesn't quit, it is just minimizing it. Make sure you QUIT out of it completely. Then open the program again.

5. If all else fails, REBOOT your computer and then check if it is Activated.

:-)

Try doing those before posting and see how it goes 1st. You'd be surprised how many problems a nice reboot will solve. :) Try it.

#82 VINCENT WROTE: "No it is a useless program I like Microsoft Word better XD"

Haha. Ok, this one made me smile. This is like saying "Ok, I own a 747 JUMBO JET, so I have NO need a motorcycle!"

haha.

First of all, having a lot of choices for something is a *GOOD* thing. Diversity. People come in all shapes and sizes, and each person has different needs, and things that they like. So be it! It's all good.

If you like this editor, GREAT! If you don't, it's nice that some people have mentioned some others you can look at. In fact, people who listed some others are very helpful. Posting some other alternatives, free or pay, and maybe some suggestions is More helpful than people who just post an 'it sucks' message. Because you can learn about what other people tried, how features compare, and the DEVELOPER of the FEATURED program can take a look at the competition and maybe incorporate some features that people like from those other ones into THIS program to improve it and make their program even better.

If you, ...*cough*BillW50*cough*... don't like free software, or you don't like open source things, then simply don't come to sites that offer free software like this, you have that option. Just browse the sites that you DO like. Life is too short, don't get yourself all worked up. Some people will always prefer free things, some people will always be there and prefer to BUY things. So let 'em. If the author has a good program, then it should stand on its own, and by describing features that might be appealing, and by letting people try it, the author might convert some of those freebie users to consider that it might be worth purchasing it. And if the program is good and suits someone, the author can make a sale. Nothing wrong with that.

People making suggestions, reporting problems or errors, or like those above that reported that icon issue on 98/ME or the wordwrap spacedeleteionproblem are great! They provided a nice informative post and good observations to be aware of. Quite nice of them. And also the people that tell how it compares to other similar programs are nice too. So all of you who are in those categories, thanks! and please continue.

The only issue that is not as great is when someone makes a post saying that the program is bad when they don't understand it. When its incorrect information or misleading or just plain wrong. Or when a person just doesn't 'get it' and posts something hasty without looking into it a bit further. If you dunno what you're talking about, then take some time and learn a little bit and then post, ok? Then that kind is not such a great post, but others are able to spot those on their own and disregard it.

(By the way, it was nice that a few people posted in here that some abc program was better, but then came back and posted again and said upon further investigation that they learned otherwise. That's nice that you came back and made a new post and corrected that. Nothing wrong with that. )

Oh, and #90 Myron Crebbs who WROTE "60 days…for free? This is shareware, not “freeware” as the site implies. A real rip!
Comment by Myron Crebbs — January 16, 2007 @ 7:27 pm"

It is a very smooth running application, i'll give it that. I am a bit stuck about this one. Why? Well, if anyone has something as simple as MS works, Word and notepad, i'm not too sure this is something I would pay for. There are dozens of free text editors, etc..out there that will do the same. At the same time, the interface is good, as stated , smooth runner, some features other notepad\like apps don't have. I truly do like it and if it was always free I would use it but I just don't think I would pay for this. I did give it a thumbs up as it is a very nice piece of software and i'll enjoy using it until I can't anymore but it won't go beyond that. Thanks for the try though.

Oh #42, it's great that you stand up for GAOTD, but please, to say "I have NEVER had any problems" is getting just as old as the whiners\stompers replies. Some of us do have real issues with some of the software and don't simply whine about it. Nothing is perfect and some things go beyond reading the directions. Please consider this and not catagorize as some of us have had problems with software, there is a big difference between the whiners\people who don't read, and those who have actual issues. Thanks.

Paul

I installed this on my Windows ME machine and when I went back to my desktop, Start menu and Windows Explorer, all my icons had disappeared. I restarted the computer and things were fine. Launched the GridinSoft Notepad and again my icons disappeared. Restarted again and things were fine. Has anyone else run into this?

Seems like a neat little program, but after making my icons disappear I uninstalled it.

The feature list seems a little meager, and I'm betting this doesn't start up as fast as notepad anyway.

Run Grindinsoft notepad all all icons disappear from desktop AND Start menu, text still there and ability to launch shortcuts still there, but no icons.

I also uninstalled and restore my previous registry backup. I can't recommend this app for Win 98.

Hi Yaron... You make some good points... but there is a time and place for that. Here is not the place for alterative free programs IMHO! As there would be thousands of posts if everyone did this. And reading through this comment session would turn into a full time job! I am sorry, but who has the time?

If someone is interested in an alterative free program, just Google it. That is what Google is there for. No need whatsoever to duplicate what Google does right here. As it looks and smells just like spam. Anybody wishes for more spam? Yeah right! lol

Now that isn't to say that someone wishes that GridinSoftNotepad had this or that. This is perfectly fine IMHO. And this is what this comment section is for. As people wondering whether to download the current giveawayoftheday is worth it or not.

And not taking me up in the forum sounds like a cop-out to me. As you can use the same login and out that you use here. Just remember to logout before posting back here.

CJ: Nice if you have not got Microsoft Word, or Open Office, or … a gazillion other free equivalents.

I have both and I find this program very useful. It is smaller and saves me tons of steps!

vincent: No it is a useless program I like Microsoft Word better XD

If I only could have one, yes! Both I don't have too. As I can use this one too. And it is far faster too. Something you probably could careless about. :)

Hedron: There is smaller more powerful text editor than this. It is called Vi...

Oh please! Free and open source! They are a dime a gazillion! Why don't you tell us something we don't know? The reason why bad programmers give away their software as open source is because they couldn't sell it to save their life! They are the lowest of the lowest. Let us be serious here! It is open source because they want someone to help them. As they know they are not good enough. Trouble is virtually everyone won't help them anyway. lol

@BillW50 - The forum post you link to would indeed be a better place than here to discuss it, but it also requires to create yet another user/password for a login to the board. So for now I'll pass, and just try to use notepad programs as example to make this somewhat on-topic here.

You are correct that this is a post about a single program, the offer of today, of GridinSoft Notepad. And so discussing other programs may seem to be irrelevant.
But that isn't entirely true.

The obviously proper things to discuss here would be what GridinSoft Notepad can, and cannot, do. Extremely relevant, since people would want to have more reviews on it.
A part of it is a comparison to other programs of the same kind. It doesn't exist in a void. It also doesn't exist solely together with Notepad that comes with Windows.

So other programs are relevant in this regard. It affects the impression of GridinSoft features, and the assessment of how good it is in the field of, say, text editors. If it has a lot of features that are useful, and few other tools have, it provides a greater incentive for people to try it than if it contains useful features which are considered standard.

Of course a more details discussion on the features and behaviour, and more detailed comparison, would be better. But even a synthesis of "Text editors X,Y, and Z, also have spell checker, but only X and M and syntax highlighting for C++" can be relevant.

Maybe the people commenting don't provide all the info one could hope for when they mention other editors, but a little bit is still better than none.

Then there's another issue. Not everyone who comes here does it on the day GridinSoft Notepad is released on GOTD.

People can browse past offers. And this site is indexed by search engines, so people can come here searching for info about GridinSoft Notepad, or just searching for info about text editors in general.

And mentions of other similar programs can be exactly what many of these people look for. They could see the info here about GridinSoft Notepad, and see the info and pointers to other programs, so they could then go and see what suits them better. It may be GridinSoft Notepad for some, and may be another program for others.

It really doesn't matter, on the general level, if the other editors mentioned are freeware or not, apart from the fact that it's another "feature" for consideration. The important thing is that it places the program in context, and makes this post more useful for many of the people who will read it.

If GridinSoft Notepad is good, and that is certainly the impression I'm getting, then it's even good for them to have some alternatives mentioned here. They count on other people to actually buy the program. And people who get to see alternatives mentioned, and who can go check both them and GridinSoft Notepad, would feel much better about buying it if they really got to compare and decide it's better.

Many of the programs mentioned here do seem lacking in comparison, so that actually helps GridinSoft Notepad, by making it look better. While on the other hand it also helps people who want something similar, but maybe different, or need less features, or maybe can't justify paying for what they need.

By providing and discussing some alternatives everyone wins, and this post becomes more relevant.

Your setup program would not connect with your site so I could get the license file. I'm running Vista. Nothing I tried would let it through the firewall.Seemed like a good product (I downloaded the trial version), but I did not get the free copy you promised.

So, you say "Small, fast and powerful text editor". Why use GridinSoft Notepad I ask. There is smaller more powerful text editor than this. It is called Vi, and there is a gui version, called Gvim. It runs not only on *nix systems, it also runs on windows. And more important - IT'S FREE AND OPEN SOURCE!!!

Superb app from a superb developer -- freeware just doesn't compare with the power / flexibility of this notepad replacement.

Makes me wonder if too many people here are too darn quick to boast about how good this or that freeware is in comparison to the GOTD offering, without having spent sufficient time to compare fully or fairly.

Is it, methinks, a desperate rush by some to display their Amazing Knowledge of Every Application Available On The Internet????????

Well, gosh, aren't you the clever ones then.

As to the usual moaners, I really do wish GOTD would scan these comments and delete the twenty seven thousandth post from someone who a) says "but my download says it's only a trial version, boo-hoo-hoo" or b) asks "how can I keep this free prog if I change computers / reformat / emigrate to Accrington?"

Congrats to Gridinsoft for a class act piece of software -- and congrats to GOTD for working with developers of such a well deserved pedigree.

Is there a way to change the tab spacing? It seems stuck on 8

My first feedback, though have downloaded several good apps, including the exceptional True Launch Bar -- which has replaced the Windows taskbar on all my computers.

Despite its limitations, I've relied on Notepad each day and have yet to find a suitable replacement for it. Have been working with Notepad Pro now for several hours and find its interface and feature set terrific. Beyond spell check, just the ability to convert typecases, resize fonts, drag & drop to open, and have multiple files open and accessible in one window via tabs to elliminate clutter on my desktop is worth the price of admission and then some. Two concerns at the moment:

1) When typing in Word Wrap mode (F2), periodically upon reaching the right margin, if a space is typed and the first letter of the next word begins on the next line as a wrap, the space is removed and the two words are joined to form a single word on the next line. For example, when I just typed "when typing" and reached the right margin as described above, word wrap eliminated the space to form "whentyping." Perhaps there's an auto function I need to turn off to remedy.

2) Cannot get Spell Check to work. Have checked the install directory to ensure "notepad.dic" is there and it is. Why won't it work? Big concern.

If these two issues can be resolved, this Notepad Pro will become my default notes app. Thanks GOTD.

BillW50, people suggesting alternatives are not wasting anyone's time.

Remember that people may hit this post even after the giveaway period expires. Or may not like GridinSoft Notepad for some reason but be interested in a similar editor. Just because you think that two of the suggested alternatives don't compare, doesn't mean that mentioning them is a waste of time.

And while I'm commenting, PSPad is another very good freeware alternative. I haven't checked GridinSoft Notepad, since I'm not looking for another text editor right now, but PSPad at least contains the features of GridinSoft Notepad that I noticed mentioned on this post and comments so far.
