I had never heard of this software before I came to this site. I currently review registry and PC optimization software for a few websites, i must say that this software is not much different from most of the available repair software that can be downloaded for free. If you are having problems with your registry I would suggest doing some more research and getting value for your money.

The follow steps can get shortcuts back,
1. Click 'Start'->'Run'
2. When Run dialog popup, enter c:\windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe
3. Restore your system to a earlier time.

I loved this...it worked great. Notice the past tense. It worked once. Next time I started my computer it didn't load on startup and there is no .exe in the directory under program files so...thanks for one good cleanup. Will stick with my Windows Care Professional.

I also lost ALL my program shortcuts. System Restore put everything back correctly, but it makes me a little nervous about using the program. I retraced my steps and duplicated the problem. It happened using Glary Utilities Uninstall Manager when I uninstalled a program entry named AOLIcon. Be sure to make backups when using this program.

It cleaned my computer oh yes and it took a part from my virusscanner too. Some parts were completely dissapeared!
I was lucky I could do system restore
My friend had to install word and excel again after using this awful program!

Ok....uninstalled. My antivirus acted very slow tonight, this never happened before but I think I'll stick to CCcleaner and my standard Windows Task Manager. (The one included in this software seems to make a habit of writing memory to my HD and nothing more). Adious. D:

thanks, yes, it is lsasse.exe
I am going to get chewed out by my in house computer expert, too,,, I like GAOTD, but I do have to be careful, i was so thrilled with all the excess junk it found yesterday, but when it wouldn't start up this morning, a major feeling of dread came over me. Thankfully, i know enough about F8 and system restore, but i am still trying to correct things.

Julie, just so you know, in case it was a typo, lsass.exe (as opposed to lsasse.exe) is a valid Windows process.

Hello everyone,

#213 Fubar:

Thank you for all your warnings, but I'm afraid it was too late to take any of them into consideration. :( I'd already tried a system restore, but even that doesn't work now!

My husband is a software programmer but knows an enormous amount about computers in general. I didn't have the nerve to tell him yesterday, as he's been warning me about using system tools from GOTD for weeks now. He hates bundled software with a passion, saying that he'd rather use a dedicated program that performs a specific task expertly, than a program that performs multiple tasks and none of them as good as they should be.

I guess I've learned my lesson, I won't be downloading any more system bundled software from GOTD ever again.

Hi Julie,

That file is a serious worm that opens up a backdoor to your system:

LSASSE.EXE - Dangerous
lsasse.exe
W32/Rbot-DI
Aliases: Backdoor.Rbot.gen, W32/Sdbot.worm.gen.o virus

It is a worm which attempts to spread to remote network shares.
It also contains backdoor Trojan functionality, allowing unauthorised remote access to the infected computer via IRC channels.

It spreads to network shares with weak passwords as a result of the backdoor Trojan element receiving the appropriate command from a remote user.

Copies itself to the Windows system folder as LSASSE.EXE and creates registry entries called MICROSOFT UPDATE Machine under the following keys so as to run itself on system startup:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Use RegRun Startup Optimizer to remove it from your system.

Removal: LSASSE.EXE is removed by RegRun.

Need help? Get rid of a Virus/Trojan/Adware/Spyware? RegRun - User's Choice

Constantly updated. Last update: January 12 2007

Application Database is recommended by The Washinton Post.

I really hope you manage to remove it - I'd check the McAfee site for the file if I were you. They list all malicious files.
~ Swan
P.S. Still dealing with my own deletion issues too :(

You have to question some of the comments on here. Either people are commenting before trying. Or without realising the damage the program has done. Or they are false comments by people connected with the company (or this site) just trying to get as many people as possible to download it.

If you remove any so called 'invalid' reg entries, duplicate files or empty folders with this program you WILL cause damage to your computer, I can absolutely guarantee it (just because it seems ok at first doesn't mean the damage isn't there and won't cause major issues further down the road).

You'll also be removing some of your spyware protection if you use any anti-spyware program which adds sites to IE's restricted zone (eg Spyware Blaster, Spybot) because it flags this protection as adware which should be removed!!!

What a great program! One of the best in a while, I think. I love the Process Manager utility that keeps check on background programs running, and if your'e not sure, just hit the "google it" and it'll tell if you need to keep it or not. Great program again guys, keep up the good work! P.S. Works great on Vista!

#153, Swan (and others with similar problem), nevermind, the forums indicate that you can do a System Restore (if you have a suitable restore point). This is assuming that only your shortcuts were deleted, which is what others have been reporting.

#153, Swan, see my comment #213. I suspect that your programs are still there (in Windows XP, typically in C:\Program Files); most people are reporting that only their shortcuts are deleted. I don't know whether a System Restore can fix this (Microsoft doesn't define what "system" is in this context), but doing anything that writes to the hard disk can overwrite any recoverable data. You can try NTFS.com Data Recovery Software; they have a couple of different products that have bootable CD's (download and burn on another computer). Shortcuts are small, some of the demos might be able to recover them. If you don't have another hard disk, a USB drive (possibly even a floppy) should be able to hold recovered shortcuts.

Microsoft AutoRuns has been available for years (from Sysinternals) for free, and does a much better job of handling startup, shell enhancement, context menu, browser helpers, browser toolbars, Google process name searches, etc. As I stated in comment #39, the Registry Cleaner is pointless. The duplicate file finder doesn't check for duplicate content. Empty folders are generally harmless, and some software may expect some of them to exist. The temporary file finder takes forever and is pointless--you can just delete the temporary files yourself (it doesn't know which to leave--you should), the XP Disk Cleanup is otherwise better, browser temp files are handled via the browser properties/options (including reserving space), the Recycle Bin you can empty yourself (or change the reserved space), etc.

Yo, 175 ("Little" John), cut back on the steroids--they're not only shrinking your gonads, but also your brain.

When we install stuff like winrar, winzip, antivirus, anti spyware software they add their link to the context menu. For a non expert it is not easy to remove them. "ShellExView" is handy to remove the unwanted context menu items. This software makes management of the context menu easy.

#153, Swan, don't touch your computer--use another computer if you need Internet access, e-mail, etc. Did you have Glary Utilities create a backup? Have you checked the Recycle Bin? Warning: even starting the computer may be destroying recoverable deleted files. Personally, I like iolo Search and Recover 4. However, if you don't have file recovery software already installed, that could be a problem. I'll do a little searching later and see if I can find something that will boot and recover from a CD. Also, most recovery software requires another drive/partition to recover to. One option would be to take out your disk drive, and attach it to a computer that has recovery software installed (or you can pay a fortune to a recovery service that you trust). I did warn people that Glary Utilities was lame (it's even more lame than my initial impression; I looked at some of its other features), and several posts after mine indicated that some people were having problems with it deleting things that it wasn't supposed to. Not to rub it in, but this is a good example of why external backups are useful. In today's market, an external FireWire hard disk drive is usually your best bet; external USB 2.0 would be second best (actually, eSATA is best, but nobody has that on their PC's).

Thanks much for a nice program. Especially helpful are the links for more information on, for example, Start-up items, whether or not they should be deleted, or are necessary. On first running this program, it found MANY errors, missing links, etc. and is easy to figure out. I give it a definite Thumbs Up. Thanks again!

Hi #200,

So far I have no problem dl GOTD sw.(Other than from AVS4You). Why not you try this. First, create a new folder ( I mostly use D drive as is safer for me). Then click on the activated key, follow the set up.exe. browse your installation to the new folder you just create. Then it should be good then. By the way mine is Window XP. Unless yours is Vista if not it should not have problem. Take care.

Good, useful program today, thanks Glarysoft and GAOTD!

Re #167; Mark - I don't think anyone better count on you for help based upon your spelling and language skills! Apart from the fact that you don't even follow the instructions in the "Readme" file, which says to "Activate" FIRST then run "Setup"!

Sorry, but many of the comments here read like the authors just can't follow simple instructions, and are in need of "Computers 101"!

Here it is, not even my birthday, but you guys have just given me one of the best presents ever. What a wonderful piece of software GOTD...a true "killer app"(and I mean "killer" in a good way)! I have been using Tuneup Utility 2004 for my WinXP laptop, and have loved how well it's kept my laptop humming nicely. But I have been looking for a long time for the same type of utility for my Win98 desktop. And now, here it is. Actually, Glary Utilities is like a little brother to Tuneup, simpler looking, but with the same ease of use. Yes, I am being very careful with my deletions, but with the optional backup and the excellent and in-depth reasons given for deletion, I feel very confident. I'm very, very impressed! Many thanks!

I agree completely with #47. I just loaded it on my home PC and I was amazed at some of the functions. When I got to the Task Manager portion I was blown away at the usefulness. I always wondered what some of the cryptic names were and it gives you the option to google it right from the program then gave great details. I also loved the fact that you can control startup progs. I butched a few days ago at length about the crappy freebies GAOTD had been dishing out. This was a great response. I am glad I stuck around. All the bitchers should just be patient, all the honest complaints should be stated, and everyone should be heard. I think GAOTD is listening. Thanks Glary, you put some thought into this and it is worth paying for so I am doubly plaesed it is free today. I am installing it on my work laptop next. YEEEEEEEHAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!! From Iowa. Shout out to NY.

The program is good, BUT it is NOT for novices or those who delete first and ask questions later!
Be EXTREMELY careful with the utility! If you do not know what you are removing, you can mess up any number of items from Desktop Shortcuts to System files. THINK, ASK, SEARCH and be CERTAIN you know what you are removing before you do so!!

I ran three programs ; ccleaner, register booster and glary utilities.

Ccleaner ran without giving me problems. Registry Booster checked and fixed part of the registry problems; and will fix the rest when I pay up USD29.

I ran Glary utilities - yes my pc speeded up no end; and it fixed 300 ?problems.

On the negative side -
(1) when I ran registry booster again; there are still 400 more to go.

(2) #134 - This program is DANGEROUS ! I let it clean up my hard drive and it erased programs I use every day !!

Sad to say, I agree with #134 in part. I spent the better part of my night checking and restoring programs AND program shortcuts.

So, I would caution those who use it; use it intelligently. In that respect I agree totally with #136.

I give the program 6 out of 10. It cleaned up my disk; but I also lost my "wanted programs" shortcuts; and yes, I lost some minor utilites too.

If I had to pay; sorry, no will do. Hope this helps everyone.
