Wll, this remark is late, but I change my comment of #10. For the company in the person of John Carricaburu send me many e-mails to solve the problem, why the program didn't work on my computer. We found out the problem was the use of 2 routers instead of one. But also for that problem there came a solution. Absolutely great, how this company helps to solve your problem! And now the program works, it's very useful. So now in a scale from 0-10 I give the program (and it's company!!) 10 points.

@85: Thank you for the helpful hint - although I may not install the software today, I found a way to change the language to default (english):
- run regedit
- go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ShalSoft\GigaTribe\kernel
- change "LangId" to 1
- start GigTribe, register
- change back the LangId to the value before
;-)

I downloaded the program with the idea of using it for graphic and script file exchanges in a PaintShop Pro learning group of 30. I am behind a router & Error 17 popped up right out of the gate - but the error message came with a button linked to GigaTribe's help page about the problem. I read the help files relating to the error, followed the link to http://www.portforward.com/routers and methodically followed the instructions to select my router, then choose the program called 'Tribalweb' - I worked slowly and methodically thru each screen and inside of ten minutes, I was connected and hustling to find the tab to accept invitations from waiting friends.

For what it's worth, the Gigatribe's and portforward.com's help files are what made a believer out of me. The instructions were easy to understand and lined out in the order each task needed to be done. Ample screenshots made it easy to stay on track. I was never left wondering if I was plumb stupid or if the help files were written by babboons. When a software company puts that much effort into the help files, you can bet they take pride in all areas of their work and you are getting a good product.

Gigatribe is light, attractive to look at. Easy to use.

Thank you.

After a rocky first run this morning, I was able to get it working tonight after work. I am not a tech, nor do I play one on TV and the help at GigaTribe's website walked me through the process of setting up a static IP and then convincing the router to handle the port issue.

GOTD - Keep up the good work.
John (giga) - Because of your customer service skills I will have no hesitation about buying a program from your company if a need arises in the future. You also make it very easy to recommend it to friends, many of whom have even less technical skill than I do.

This pro would be wonderful if it allowed the download and upload speed to 100+ kbs/s. My friend and me tried this, it only allowed 48-50 Kbs/s transfering files, that's pretty slow (for me). Anybody has anyidea about how to speed it up?

I've not downloaded today's giveaway, but I'd still like to make a comment.

#63, #69, #70 - These people didn't sound like they have downloaded the program and gave it a try before making any comment. Who are these people? competitors of GigaTribe or GOTD?

It's useless!
I can't use it cause I'm behind NAT.
If could use port redirecting, I'd rather set my own file server.

#72 BillW50, absolutely. Lots of non-techies here who shouldn't be out downloading from anywhere and everywhere. There are safe sites like download.com, caiman and game hippo for games, etc. But this site is better for the many non-power users here because the comment section has evolved into an instant help area for those having trouble with downloading, activating or running the day's software.

#63 Sher says: "A lot of the games are makeovers, and the software you offer that can be purchased, are duplicates of what is already out there FOR FREE. The interface is just different."

Yes lots of the games are makeovers but so are many of the games people buy. At least the makeovers at their game site are free. GOTD doesn't offer software for purchase, they offer it for free for one day. If user interface was not important then we would all still be using command line, and Microsoft and Apple wouldn't be multi million dollar companies.

I have intalled quite a few apps from this site and their game site, and uninstalled those not kept. Yet I am certainly not "having major headaches" with my PC. Have also downloaded and installed free apps from other sites but know what I'm doing, like how to check a site's safety and do multiple scans on any downloads before and after installing. But for the reason mentioned above (instant help) this site is better for newbies and non-techies. You haven't been paying attention, GOTD has had utility apps from several shareware companies and not just 3 or 4. The game site has offered selections mostly from the same few developers, but GOTD has only been around since late last year. Be patient, more developers will likely get on board once word gets around.

Also "Sher" your overuse of CAPS and multiple punctuation marks are rather annoying. Can you say "hyperbole"? Oh, and the site you tried to reference is download.com (singular) not downloadS.com (plural) but plugging in the plural still goes to the right location so perhaps many others have made the same mistake you did.

#70 I think that is pretty bad advice you gave hpb IMHO to people. As you are telling non-tech savory people to go out in the world of the Internet and feast on all of the malware, trojans, viruses, etc. you can get freely and unknowingly unleash them on your computer. Yeah that is really a smart thing to tell people. :(

Hello,

_______________
A Bit Off Topic
_______________

Although this is a little late in the Comments list, I noticed that a few of the above users were experiencing router difficulties.

Although this is only one scenerio, I have found in the past that the D-Link Router is very faulty sometimes, and even on a Demilitarized Zone, the router will continue to prevent data transfer. The Ports are blocked in more than one location, and one of them is listed as "Not Active", implying that port isn't being blocked, yet it is. The Router is a bit of a runaround system so it will take some patience to remove it.

I know this isn't a troubleshooting forum, but if I can help just one person, it wasn't in vain.

About the program:

Excellent. I was in need of such a file transfer software, and it seems that every software you choose to add, GOTD, is like you are reading my mind. Just last week I was in need of a "Batch Photo Resizer" for the Slideshow program I am currently writing. Are you spying on me? Just Kidding.

#63 (Sher) I guess you are right. I think it's better to look elsewhere for good freeware or Open Source software and help (by donating to) the author to do his thing, than to download the (normally too high prized) and middle-of-the-road software which is offered here for free but but which can't compare in any way to the real good and real free program's which exist out there on the internet.
I'm afraid I dozed off here a bit. Maybe we're all a bit greedy after all.

So bye everyone, nice meeting you, I'm off!

And GOTD: there will be enough people who disagree with me, so don't panic and keep up the good work.

Not into P2P but this is a great alternative to all those free P2P apps that come with unadvertised "freebies" that can potentially hurt the user or their computer. Most of those are loaded with either spyware adware or viruses. (Correct plural form is 'virii' but nobody uses it.) This program is clean, you only have to accept those you invite, and files are encrypted.

It's also terrific that John from Gigatribe is posting here to lend some support. According to the GOTD agreement he's not required to do that, very considerate that he's doing it anyway. Thumbs up on the program and the support offered by its developer!

You are providing garbage programs to these poor souls. Why? Money? Greed? Stupidity?

A lot of the games are makeovers, and the software you offer that can be purchased, are duplicates of what is already out there FOR FREE. The interface is just different.

If anyone thinks they are getting something for nothing, deserves the anxiety they go through when using these so-called 'freebies'. NOTHING IS FREE, FOOL.

And, if you MUST HAVE FREE SOFTWARE, just go out to other FREEWARE sites, downloads.com and search for keyword, freeware, under Software or Downloads, and thousands will come up, with the majority being excellent! They are even RATED FOR YOU! So, you don't have to wonder if they're good or not. Don't waste your time here.

Everytime you install this crap on your drive, you are BEGGING FOR TROUBLE. Just my two cents. When you begin having major headaches with your PC, such as what I've read thus far (above), maybe you'll take the hint??????

BTW: ever notice that this web site doesn't do business with any other developers than the same 3 or 4 or so?????????????? Mmmmmmmm...get the stars out of your eyes, stop sucking up to this site, and call a spade a spade. this software sucks.

As a tech-support professional myself, I appreciate how responsive you are in answering users' questions, even if some of them are not well thought out!!
This is an indication to me of both the quality of your product and the quality of the support one would expect to receive during use of the product.

Here's an idea: why not use torrents? Most(if not all) BitTorrent clients offer the option to create a torrent. For privacy password protect an archive and just be your own tracker. This way, only the people you trust to give them your password will be able to open the file. Also being your own bittorrent tracker will make the torrent "live" only when you chose to seed it. Even more: modern clients support encryption, use multiple sources, resume interrupted downloads, they're free and continuously developed. Here's a tutorial: http://torrentfreak.com/how-to-create-a-torrent/
Torrents are the best way to send large(and small) files.

And about the program, it might be useful but there are better alternatives.

P.S. To those who are complaining:

1: Check the website FIRST to see what Giveaway of the Day is giving you. There is a nice free version that isn't nerfed badly. The Premium adds features moreso than the Free takes away features.
2: Check around online for tutorials on how to set your router correctly
3: Be smart. Don't blow your mouth off before you know what you are saying. :)

I am using a 2Wire router/firewall/ADSL and it works fine. I had to setup the hardware firewall settings to add GigaTribe to the Hosted Applications list and allow it to use port 3728 though.

#31 Okay Deano, I didn't know that, thanks! Although GigaTribe can be used on 2 PCs of a local network. Thus using the maximum speed possible. Can MS FolderShare do this?

If you have Firefox you can use the free Allpeers extension to do a similar thing:

http://www.allpeers.com/

No file size restriction, although you can only add 300 files with no subfolders each time you add a folder. It's still in Beta, these restrictions will be removed soon.

There is no limit on foldershare transfers apart from a 2GB limit on the size of each file that is being transferred. Most people don't create files of that size.

Foldershare DOES use encryption. From https://www.foldershare.com/info/faq/AboutFolderShare.php?#overview05

"FolderShare is a secure peer-to-peer system. Only you and your invited members can view or access files in your FolderShare library. FolderShare encrypts all files and messages exchanged on our network to ensure user privacy. All P2P communication on FolderShare is authenticated via RSA and encrypted via AES over SSL."

But MS FolderShare has a 2GB limit. Nor does MS FolderShare use encryption either. Unlike GigaTribe which is also free and uses "Blowfish encryption with a 128-bit key".
