thanks for your rather oafish comments, but if you'd actually read my comment, it was to the effect that NO lic had been provided when I downloaded and installed. Please try comprehending comments next time .

Might be my computer but I installed it. Licenced it ok. After launching the screen came up. I went to check out all the tools in the top menu bar. Every button I tried the sub menus were blank unless I ran my mouse pointer over them. Reinstall 3 times but same thing each time. Web capturing worked ok with IE but did not show up on the right click feature in FireFox. Not a program I really needed but was willing to try it out in case I could use it. I guess it made that decision for me LOL

Looks like a great program. Thank goodness for comments or I may have not been able to get this for lack of understanding on how to register the program. With only a short time left to activate it i saw that you were to paste the license key into the program file. Thanks GAOTD

Kym #95.
Please read very carefully.
It DOES NOT SAY to click on register.
Dont open the program AT ALL after you install.
Drag or copy the lic file INTO THE FOLDER that contains the program.
Just like #68 says.
The readme file in the downloaded zip file says the same thing.
If you can not understand by now,
I suggest you give up.
It is not possabile to explain any more such a simple thing.
no one says click register.

Just drag or copy the lic file into the program folder.
THEN start the program.

Remove demo database.

Now here is the trick,

It is NOT hauntingly be undeletable,
as u put it.
It just requires some looking and some thinking.
Hope this is not too rude for poster69

#54, mike, #92, drsarkar, I get tired of people who post meaningless installation statistics and people who think that the statistics are significant. I only mention installation issues when I see a real problem. Oh, look, I installed some software and it changed the registry and installed some files! Well, duh, what did you expect? It's easy to tell the people who don't know what they're talking about from those who do.

Expanding on my comment #21, I have to give this a thumbs-down.

#28,30, Shellca, I was able to export in various formats, but with severe problems. For one, PDF format uses their online service, which I find unacceptable from a performance and privacy perspective. For another, Adobe Acrobat Reader (fully updated) couldn't read the PDF file, so the PDF output is useless. Dumping a captured webpage in MHTML format indicates that the problem is with the capture, not with the display, so the webpage capture is useless to me.

I'm using Firefox 3 beta; the GKB extension installed, but like many extensions, it's disabled (incompatible) under Firefox 3.

Regarding the GKB IFilter, apparently it's only for documents which have been exported in GKB's .kbd Knowledge Base Document proprietary format, not for documents in GKB's database. Additionally, I see no need for yet another proprietary format. There are so many document formats; they may not be perfect, but one can find a standard format which is good enough.

Considering all of the basic, severe problems, and the proprietary nature of this application, I can't recommend it.

I save webpages locally, but some people may be interested in Google Notebook. Google Toolbar beta (currently, IE only) supports Google Notebook.

Having only a few hours to examine a program like this is not really enough to make a well-informed comment. But this program seems to be really good - for it's stated purpose of creating a knowledge base.

I don't think a comparison with Evernote is really possible, though their base functionalities might sound the same at first description. Evernote is a note taking application (version 2.2 - not the Beta 3 they're screwing around with now) and has all the little bells and whistles to make information gathering, arrangement, rearrangement, etc., very easy and adaptable. It's great for daily jottings, broad disconnected research assembling, random stuff.

But General Knowledge Base seems much more oriented to specifically building a reference "book" to be consulted later for purposes of training, help desk, or for specific ongoing project use.

To put it another way, Evernote seems oriented towards the "front end" of info gathering, making it easy to collect and group data, GKB seems oriented towards the use of that data after it's been collected, analyzed and organized. Evernote is a great catch-all, but if I wanted to create a reference source (a knowledge base) for some topic or project or business, I'd probably use General Knowledge Base. In fact, I'd probably use Evernote to gather the data initially and analyze it, then export the good pieces to a GKB for subsequent use as reference material.

This program has a lot of good features for putting together a good reference book - native document editor with formatting, table and templates. Ability to database text, html, pictures, etc. Links to external documents. Ability to add attachments to any database record. Ability to search, to bookmark groups of documents, change the viewing layout, different ways to navigate records, etc, etc. Very nice.

Thanks very much GAOTD and Baltsoft for making this software available. Just what I needed! Installed fine on Win XP Home.
I'm now looking at the MakeSurvey software. Glad to be made aware of this company's excellent products (no I don't know them, I'm just a grateful GAOTD fan)
