you will absolutely miss something really useful tool, CutePDF (a PDF printer, just like any other free/not free PDF printers) can't substitute Foxonic Pro, because Foxonic Pro can really do a lot of thing which CutePDF can’t do.
you'd better go http://www.caisdata.com/faq.htm to learn how to use Foxonic Pro.

#82 “My question (#2) was actually not a dig on this product, but simply a question on whether this is needed if someone has the Adobe Suite.

absolutely you should take this handy PDF tool, just thinking about how long will it take for you to merge 1000+ PDF (NOT image, Foxonic Pro can really batch merging PDF files in it's file browse window just like it do with image files) files in Adobe Suite (1 hour/2 hours, 5 hours, even more), and how long will it take for Foxonic Pro to do the same thing (5 minutes, 10 minutes).

You can do the right choice, right?

@30 I think Foxonic is a play against popular Foxit Software.

@67 Look at the free Foxit Reader http://www.foxitsoftware.com/
which includes a typewriter tool

The images are not shown as thumbnails (right click / View As / Tiles, List, Details only) so you can't see which photos you want to use / choose from a folder. It defeats the purpose because I now need to open Windows Explorer as well to see what the photo looks like. Anyone with a solution to this or if I'm missing something, please advise. Thanks :-)

hope IAM not too late, but, ACTIVATE first extracts an icon which when clicked launches an activation sequence; a flyer splash comes out of it bearing highlited text, sometimes with the serial#; or, before you activate the colorful icon you can find the # in the extracted README file; else, ACTIVATE wakes up the s/w automatically; registers the indication in your TOOL bar at bottom of screen; on my xp sp2 it flashes an alarming orange, saying, ACTIVATED.

Next, run setup, allow pgm to run, go to help, usually, unless it tells you on the splash screen to click REGISTER HERE.

If you go to HELP, usually ABOUT will say, PGM IS REGISTERED TO: Registered, or, GAOTD, or the name spelled out.

Then you know the skinny on the results of the activation; or the pasting of the highlighted serial # of the README or, optionally, the activation highlighted splash in BLUE (on mine); don't click close unless you want to go to the GAOTD page asking, WHAT NEXT? I leave that for last in case I have to redo my steps for some reason; DIALUP is a PAIN! and if AOL drops out on me then, i can easily sped hours trying to re-install! while the going is good, keep on going until you run it and see if it's properly registered; then, when you're certain, give GAOTD the signal that it went OK by closing the ACTIVATION notice in your TASK bar at bottom; I suppose it tells them something, I certainly would want a tally on the process if I were they.

I hope this helps forever because I sure feel stupid saying all this, but, if someone doesn't really understand, they'll walk around all night until 2AM when it's all over with in vain.

I like this discussion and people because no matter how seemingly lame the reports, I glean valuable info out of it all and build a folder for every pgm in discussion...yall's all save me hours of labor in search and retrieval! THANK YOU ALL! I mean it! I believe in strict and tight documentation; I could never feel free or comfortable without it; I value criticism, inputs, brass, decision,...and GAOTD and its sponsors, contributors and etc. I hope this doesn't get printed, i so embarrassed.

Now you KNOW!...a lookahead thingie on the intro...thanks for the convenience item, I feel known and included now.

V good program. Had used the Version 3.0 also offered here some time ago. So I downloaded this updrade and instal. Everything went on smoothly but the 3.0 version remained. It did not uninstal the old version before this new one is installed. Now I have 2 registered version in my pc. I will try both for awhile before uns=installing the older version.
Many features and need to really dig in and get the full benefits. Still it is a great program and well worthwhile to download and try.
Thank you GAOTD and Caisdata.

Hi #15 Ashraf and #65 giovanni,
just downloaded the 3 example PDF file that u(Ashraf) created from eXpert PDF, but can't find the PDF files that you create with
Foxonic Professional.

I think a good review on products must be based on u REALLY know how to use it, NEVER post a review that can't tell users what it is just
because u don't know how to use the app that u reviewed.

Some useful info and advices about your review on on this app AND anyother apps from GOATD:
(1) Foxonic pro: please adjust the PDF page size to "Auto size" in "Settings" -> "Page Options" before converting, I think you will get the same good result when converting your testing images.

(2) suggest u give us a more detailed review on, such as, TIFF image converting, include OJPEG TIFF image converting test,
multi-page TIFF image converting test.

(3) when u said about PDF printer, what about a review between PrimoPDF printer(free) and eXpert PDF printer(free?), I think this 2 apps both can be used as a PDF printer , compare the same type of app is more sense for us.

from the developer's site: "Foxonic is a powerful and easy-to-use software designed for batch converting image files
(JPEG/JPEG2000, TIFF, BMP, GIF and PNG) to PDF document. You can also merge PDF, split PDF and extract PDF pages", it's a PDF tool used for converting images to PDF, merge PDF, split PDF and extract PDF pages, it's not a PDF printer, a PDF printer can do something which this app can't (yes, print anything to PDF, but a PDF printer can't do anything, anything has its weakness, like PDF printer: nobody have time to print 1000 files to PDF one by one), also Foxonic Pro has its limit (such as only images to PDF converting), but also Foxonic Pro can do something which a PDF printer can't, such as batch converting 1000 or more image files with just 2 clicks within couple of minutes, yeah, really save us a lot of time, they are for different cases.

(4) how about a batch converting test between Foxonic Professional and eXpert PDF in "Batch Creator" mode, 5000+ images one time or more what about 10000+ and even more images (100000) convert testing, I would like to know the result about the review on this batch converting job.

(5) when u recommend a free PDF printer lately in GAOTD or whatever else places, can u recommend PrimoPDF but not eXpert PDF.
because:
(1) eXpert PDF is not free
(2) PrimoPDF is really more powerful than eXpert PDF when printing 1-2 files to PDF.
(3) PrimoPDF is alway FREE, not like eXpert PDF v4.0 and v5.0 free (maybe), but v6.0 is not free.

(6) I recommend u to read through the developer's help page (http://www.caisdata.com/faq.htm) to learn how to use this app
before u post your review on the app.

(7) advices: appreciate your reviewing work, but PLEASE, before u post a review on some products (such as this app or any other apps from GAOTD), u SHOULD learn to know how to use it for some days (30 minutes or hours testing can't output some good result, how
about changing your reviewing cycle to 2-3 days a product/review but not 1 hours a product/review).

(8) Finally, I would RECOMMEND Foxonic Professional also, u can always find ways to use this app.

Ashraf, looking forward for your further reviewing on this app again and keeping up this good working.

Giovanni, thinking before you do or saying something, but not whatever else say something and you say something, don't be a
follower, to become a real thinker that can real thinking, u will be happier.

I was really excited to see this giveaway since I had long been searching for a free program such as this. it installed perfectly on Vista 64-bit and runs very stably. Everything file I've merged and image I've converted to pdf has worked flawlessly.
My only (huge) issue with this software is that it doesn't allow the same "select all" merging of pdfs as it does for converting images to pdf. With image conversion I could select all/convert to pdf. The problem with that is once I've converted, say, 100 images I can only merge pdfs by 5 choices at a time rather than selecting all as I had just done. That takes an intense amount of work having to merge and remerge to fit those 5 slots that you get. That's my only major complaint is that the pdf merging is hugely limited. There should be the same option to "merge all" pdfs as there are to "convert all" images.
Just letting you guys know if you're all excited to merge the poster book you scanned ages ago only to find that merging the pdfs will take longer than the scanning process while there could have easily been made a "merge all" pdfs option which would have made a scanned book conversion in two steps! That would be amazing!
Hope that helps someone.

Hi, Doc (#78) - thanks for the response.

Yes, version 3.0 and version 3.2 can co-exist !

But, I took the obvious choice and uninstalled version 3.0 - they both seemed to have identical functionality, and did not go deep enough to uncover any added functionality.

cheers, Matt

It took me several tries to get it registered, but as several commenters have already stated: run "activate" first AND THEN run "setup". that's what worked for me. when you finish setup the registration fields should be filled out when Foxonic is open and you look under the Help --> Register menu.

There are many free alternatives over the market.
There is a command line tool called pdftk (for pdf toolkit). As command line is not user friendly, some developers built graphic user interfaces.

You have GUI for PDFtk which is powerful but quite ugly (and not so user friendly).

You also have PDFtk Builder, a little less powerful (it doesn't use pdftk all capabilities...) but really beautiful.

You also have PDFTools which I never used. It seems quite user-friendly.

Thanks to these pieces of software, you can merge, split, rotate, watermark (stamp) pdf, change permissions...

Regarding any conversion TO pdf, any free pdf printer will do it...

Regarding conversion FROM pdf, I don't know if this giveaway can do it.
However, free pdf reader PDF-XCHANGE VIEWER can convert pdf pages to any image format

Excellent program! Takes a bit of time to learn how everything works, but overall very simple.

Registration was confusing; it wasn't like usual giveaways, where there would be a pop up with the registration name and key and you could copy and paste it somewhere. I ran ACTIVATE.EXE first, contrary to the readme file, and then SETUP.EXE, and when I clicked Register in the file menu of the program it was already registered (running setup first and then activate left it unregistered, I had to uninstall and try again).

It's fast, makes good quality PDFs, and has many great features:
* can convert all files in a folder to one PDF
* can convert each file to their own PDF
* can select a few files and turn them into a PDF
* can rotate images before converting (under Settings, Image Layout)
* can add header and footer
* can add watermarks and security
* can even shut down the computer after converting (under Settings, General, Miscellaneous)

I just used it to convert some scanned images of a book into a PDF so I could print it out. It was very fast and very easy -- just open up the folder with the files and click Build.

If you missed this giveaway and are looking for free PDF creators, there's plenty of freeware out there. Before I had been using PrimoPDF, a print-to-PDF program. It doesn't have as many features as Foxonic, but it gets the job done, and I highly recommend it if Foxonic is unavailable.
Other freeware products: PDF ReDirect, PDF Printer, Solid PDF Creator, PDF Creator Service

All in all a great converter, and a definite keeper.

@19 -- The resolution of a screen shot is too low to wind up with a useful PDF. Also, why go through all the steps you suggest when there are so many free programs to convert other file types to PDF? That doesn't diminish the usefulness of today's offering for graphics files, which is all it was desinged to handle.

Hi Matt #48

The software actually installed under the start menu as
Foxonic Professional, leaving the other install intact.

So if you watch the install path, it seems the two coexist
fine.

Try it and see what you think.

From the Foxonic Pro 3.2 Readme.txt: "Foxonic is a powerful and easy-to-use software designed for batch converting image files (JPEG/JPEG2000, TIFF, BMP, GIF and PNG) to PDF document."

Most alternatives work by adding a PDF printer to Windows -- it would be (painfully?) tedious to open many images in a folder & print them individually, so Foxonic Pro should be pretty useful, assuming of course you have a bunch of images to convert to PDF. Since most image formats can be at least previewed in Windows -- right click & select preview -- I'd guess converting to PDF might be most useful for images in the TIF format (used for faxes), which isn't included in Windows' built-in preview applet.

As far as where the company's located, &/or details on it's size, history etc, that's the advantage of GOTD -- personally I've come to trust them *MUCH* more than any shareware & most company sites. If nationality is important to you, well, maybe you shouldn't be using a PC since most every aspect of hardware & software is multi-national.

RE: the version of Foxonic Pro offered today -- the newer version is dated 4/19/09... personally I prefer to give the GOTD team the benefit of the doubt, figuring the newer version wasn't available at the time they were writing the Activate.exe app., & planning for today's offer.

Does anyone know a (freeware) product that will override the passwords/security settings if you are not the author nor have the passwords? One might ask why and my reasons are sincere. I am an engineer and frequently download tech manuals free from manufacturers. Some of them however password protect any commenting (highlighting/crossouts, etc.) The difference in being able to highlight or not is drastic. With highlighting, I can reference back to a manual regarding a piece of machinery I am working on and see the important parts immediately from my previous work. Without this, every time I open the manual, I have to start from scratch.

Cheers all,
Phil

Maybe you'd better read Ashraf's review here, rather than senselessly criticizing his remarks:

http://dottech.org/gotdreviews/6513

If you go at the bottom of his article, he compared the QUALITY of eXPert PDF Pro 5 and Foxonic, taking the same three images he used for Foxonic examples and then converting them to PDF with eXPert PDF 5 Pro, leaving a link where you can download them to see the difference.

And as you can see, the QUALITY of the PDFs created with eXPert PDF 5 Pro is noticeably better (he used "Batch Creator" btw instead of the PDF printer).

As for “PDF merging”, “PDF splitting” and “PDF Page Extractor” features, yes this TOOL is pretty cool but there are tons of FREE TOOLS out there that can do this job pretty well (PDF HAMMER, PDF FORGE, PRIMO PDF,PDF TOOLS 1.3 etc...)

In the end I give 2 THUMBS UP for this GAOTD but eXPert PDF 5 Pro is much better because not only can convert images but also many more different types of files, including text files, that this GAOTD does not support, not to mention that the eXPert PDF 5 Pro output is of better quality than this (see above) and you can not only create but also edit PDFs with eXPert PDF 5 Pro.

In other words I think that ASHRAF is, as usual, RIGHT....LOL!!

So pls think twice before you leap next time...ok??

Cheers from Italy!!

Giovanni

Downloaded & installed Vista Vista Home 32bit very easily, but I activated it first before set up as per #43. Registration took some doing to figure out. Open the program, then RE-START the program. Go to the HELP button on the top toolbar. Go to Registration & see if it opens with GAOTD info & numbers already in there. Box will be grayed out so no changes can be made. BUT, I am thinking it is registered!!??
Only played with changing a few photos from jpeg to pdf..went fast & opened individual pages with the photos for me. Hope there is a way to make more images on a page, but I don't have time to play more right now.
Looks like a good program for my uses and I'm keeping it! Thanks for another great one, GAOTD!

Nifty, to-the-point GUI. Tools are easily Toolbar-accessed, with PLENTY of options. Good flexibility in PDF-output. It, though, and the Settings Menu, is best viewed at <1280 x 800 desktop pixels, methinks, as they are kinda "small" at that setting.

Foxtronic needs: a THUMBNAIL View in its Explorer Window, AND more Control of DPI-Output (and more, see below). But, overall...a GREAT PDF Tool!! No kidding, it does ALOT. Worth, dare I say it...Buying?!! :-)

One question...How does one get the image's PDF-Output to COMPLETELY "fit" the resulting PDF, so as to eliminate Background, please? Does it mean pre-sizing the image to the desired PDF-size? Tanx for the tip!

My BEST free PDF-creator Utility is: " CuteWriter ", because it seamlessly allows: 72 dpi-4000 dpi Output Print Quality!!, 50+ standard-size Output Presets w/custom-sizing, too, ICM (Image Color Management), Scaling to +/-%. TANX GOTD/FOX....

In my experience:
Activate, and if that unzips giving another chance to 'activate' with the GAOTD key icon do that too.... only then hit the Setup icon - I hedged my bets and had to go back and redo to get the programme registered. Well done and thanks to those commenters whoas expected, really do know what they are talking about.

I can't find a registration code either, says it's activated ok but nothing shows up under "Enter Registration Information," still says it's a 30 day trial. Unusual, normally GAOTD registration works automatically. If anyone has resolved this issue, please let the rest of us know. Thanks.

I disagree with 15 on overcrowded interface. Very simple and straightforward. Another "bad" though.. You can only set your 'Views' to Tiles, List or Details. Would be nice to have a Thumbnails option so I don't have to keep switching back and forth between my folder and the program before making a .pdf.

If I want to convert an image (or anything else) to PDF, I can print it to a PDF printer. How is this different?

#46... Program description clearly states "you can convert TIFF to PDF, JPEG to PDF, BMP to PDF, GIF to PDF and PNG to PDF." So obviously it isn't going to work for XLS or TXT files.

Watermarks and Headers not functioning well----only write vertically, text in headrs are also truncated. Not the same build of the software as in their site, but on trying the latest build, the same defect exist. But still a worthy download to turn various image files to pdf, although I believe there are various freewares around that can do the same. It wound have been better too if they incorporate a pdf reader.
The price of $79 , I think is quite expensive, comparing it to various other softwares having the same functions. PDF Exchange Pro has more function, with the benefit of a viewer, and if I remember correctly, not as expensive. Also, the encryptation technology for locking the various rights (copying, etc), is almost useless, not only for this software, but for almost all softwares doing such, because it can easily be removed in less than a second with such software as PDF password cracker. Unless the pdf is password protected to open, password protection from various permissions are almost useless.
But I must thank Caisdata Software for the generosity of giving us the Pro version, when they can elect just to give us the Lite or Standard version only.
