    Hi Bubby,

Do you know whether or not those sites are download safe? I test every site I recommend to people with McAfee Site Advisor but I don't remember having gone to any of these sites before. If you haven't tested them, I probably can over a period of time and report back here when they're done, if you think it would be useful.

  3. These sites aren't really "download sites" but rather just straight marketing sites offering free samples, products and discounted offers (like the free USB key offer yesterday).

I would use the same precautions visiting these sites that I do with any others (I wouldn't download any software directly from their servers but only from trusted and well known download sites - eg be wary of free screensavers or PC "fix everything" type software)

As they are marketing sites - they will all request some form of contact information
(most likely a postal address - so they can send the free "gift" or "offer" to you).

When providing an email address - I would strongly recommend using a secondary email address - there is no guarantee that the companies offering the freebies won't spam the supplied email address or pass it onto others. Seriously - don't use your primary email address.

In terms of a postal mail address - spam or junk mail isn't quite as likely as even sending junk mail costs the sender in both printing and postal charges. Gets expensive to do on a large scale if the recepient is just going to drop it in the trash.

BTW - I always take Site Advisor reports as "advice only". Often quite harmless sites have a "red" rating because 18 months ago they linked to a site that also had some bad downloads on it or similar. Sometimes the comments from users, conflict with the official "rating" but are much more accurate. Sometimes the reason why a site got a "red" rating has no bearing or overlap on the use that you have for the site. Site Advisor comments are sometimes as researched and technically supported as a typical "vox pop". The accuracy and relevance of the ratings varies from site to site - much more than I feel can be expressed by a "red" or a "green" light. In the absence of any other checks or balances - it could be claimed that "Site Advisor" does provide some level of user education.

An alternative to McAfee Site Advisor - is the (free) "Web Security Guard". http://www.websecurityguard.com/ (I am have recently started using this also and it seems to improve on the reporting format I was familiar with using Site Advisor). It is still very much in beta testing and a firefox version was released for beta last week.

    Hi Bubby,

I agree with you and use a gmail account for sites that I feel might send out junk mail. I don't take MSA as gospel either, but they do seem to at least give a guideline of what to expect when I visit any particular site.

I'll take a look at 'web security guard' in the morning, but at the moment I really need to get some sleep. Thanks for the great tip on the beta release for Firefox too!

Will visit again in the morning, ;)

I tried to download it, but Spyware Detector wouldn't allow it. Since my visit there SD has logged 3 spyware with 305 associated threats! (That't within 5 minutes of the visit.) They include: keylogger, registry data, values and keys. Are all these "protection" services just working against each other?

  6. Well I trust WSG and Spyware Terminator - http://www.crawler.com/Awards_Certificates.aspx

Sometimes other products do have "political issues" between each other - or they can be false positives - or they can report on "traces" which some users misinterpret as "threats".

As I've asked you to send me the detection log, and I'll have a look. The Crawler spyware products do have public forums where the products are discussed, pulled apart, criticised - they are fairly open - and if there were the source of a security threat - the news would spread far and wide. But as the number of other antispyware groups have given them the thumbs up - I'm not too worried.

I'll wait till I see the detection logs to comment further.

    Hi Bubby, :)

Could you please post the results of your findings here? I'm interested to see before I download and install. I'd actually forgotten about your great tip for Web Security Guard!

    Thanks in advance,

  8. At the moment I am frustrated with WSG because since it has become more popular - it seems people who are largely clueless are giving bad reviews to good sites - which means you get a warning before visiting good sites. You can easily override this by saying "don't warn me in future for this site". But that defeats the point of the software.

Until they work out a way to not allow idiots to affect a site rating - I'd say, hang off installing WSG (unless you enjoy the feeling of frustration).

    Hi Bubby! :)

Thanks for your recommendation to hold off for now. I know what you mean, I've also found that MSA is reporting bad sites when I know they're not.

I will however keep this thread in my favorites, in case you have better news about 'Web SC' some time again in the future.

I do appreciate all that you do for the community Bubby - you're a real asset to this website.

BuBBy, don't worry. Overall site ratings for sites (the color which WSG gives a site) is determined by ratings and reviews from more respected users of the WSG community. Users who prove to provide accurate ratings and quality reviews will be given more weight with their future ratings/reviews.

It's been awhile since anyone has posted here. As a matter of fact, I didn't even know this thread existed until I searched for the word "reviews" today.

Well, I like free stuff and have gotten many free samples in the mail via offerings listed at Mr. Free Stuff. Most of these offers are only available in the USA and Canada.

Hey.. I just got my first magazine copy of "Games For Windows" in today's mail, that someone told us about awhile back!

Hi Copmom, would this magazine "Games for Windows" be something I could subscribe to from New Zealand? I do subscribe to the UK mag "PC Utilities" so I realise that the postage all the way out to here costs a bundle, but a whole mag devoted to windows games sounds like me!

  14. Nola, I've seen it on the newsstand here in Australia - (from memory) it sells for about AUD$17 an issue (give or take). Might be easier to start with asking your local newsagency to get the magazine in so you can trial it for a few months - before committing to a full 12 or 24 month subscription.

    Hi MrB
~9 months ago u recommended WSG, which I don't know
More recently u recommended WOT, which I really like. Since then I've removed SA on all our PCs
Most of us also use LinkScanner for immediate scanning. They were bought by Grisoft (AVG) last December, don't know if quality is still the same or ...

Could u please tell us which "recipe" you use or which you recommend:
    A-Link+WOT
    B-Link+WSG
    C-Link+WSG+WOT
    D-None of the above ;*)
    Merci

There are free samples at Walmart too. Right now they have contact lenses, trash bags, hair care products, lotions, toothpaste and more. The samples change occasionally so keep checking back. Also, if you click the "free sample" button on the menu bar the page will refresh showing some different choices.

  20. @LeKanaw - my current recipe is WOT only. Most of the time I go to the site anyway - but at least it is a "warning" hanging over the front of the site, that reminds me to be a little more cautious while on that site.

At the moment I am also running the giveaway of mamutu, Spyware Blaster (v4), and NOD32 AntiVirus.

    Bonjour MisterB
Huhhh? No LinkScanner? It has helped me not go where I shouldn't many times!!
Well, maybe it's more important for us newbies, than for tech gurus like yourself...
Anyway, I'm keeping Link+WOT installed for now at least.
    Merci

    Posted 4 months ago #
  22. Yeah - I don't have a problem with Linkscanner. Acting as an early warning - it is probably quite useful for most people. I think it is doubling up a little with WOT (similar products) - but that's not a huge problem if it comes down to your own peace of mind.

I also use Firefox surfing through AdMuncher which can remove almost all of the browser based nasties. If you can't afford AdMuncher (it isn't expensive for what you get) - 2nd best would be something like AdBlock. It's not the same, and coverage is more limited and restricted to your browser - but at least it is free.

    Peace of mind: Check!
I've read LinkScanner reacts quite quickly to newly infected sites, updates fairly fast, sometimes within the hour(but not always...)

AdBlock: Yep, I've used it since the beginning. Luv it!

AdMuncher: I looked into it, last time u mentioned it. Had BM'ed it - went there to investigate, but could never find the price. They do mention their partnership program A LOT, but never the SW price per se!!!
But it's entirely possible I must be blind!! Can't see if has to be renewed ea year either. It must be there somewhere... Just can't find it!!

HostsMan: On that same thread, u also talked about HostsMan, recommended by RM.
I've read and read... Still haven't figured out *WHAT* does it do :-(
Another case of blindness I'm guessing (saying blind, thinking big ignoramus!!) *sigh*

Mangoette, simply put, Hostsman works by redirecting your browser back to your computer whenever a pre-identified unsafe/unwelcome domain or adserver is encountered. It's blocking over 70k domains now (a number unimaginably unwieldy for the antiquated method of creating a Notepad hosts file some may remember!), and I see no apparent performance lag. Betcha Delenn could give you a more techie answer.

IMHO, using the free and easily configurable Hostsman is beeeee U tee ful, but with a few caveats. You may have to add your own set of unwanted domains (like you would with a firewall or webshield) and you might not agree with all the domains it blocks. Easy enough to make changes, just remember to SAVE the changes rather than just editing the list. On the last update, I finally allowed hpHosts to merge into the others. Well, it and I obviously don't see eye to eye on acceptable sites (I don't need no steeking NetNanny mentality governing my wanderings) Even some safe sites (sears, IMDB, ehow and imageshack) were suddenly blocked. I had to do some tinkering.
Tip- Parents should password protect it so the kiddies can't go in and unblock nawty or violent sites.
Tip- Both for security reasons and to greatly enhance speed, most who use Hostsman recommend that DNS Client service be disabled. It gives that option during the install process.

One drawback to having a number of ad server thwarts running simultaneously is that sometimes, a site you really really want to see won't load. It can take some trial and error to determine which appl is doing the blocking. Still not sure if that's why Funky's Walmart site opens but nothing "FREE" appears. Dontcha just love computers? errrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

    oookkk... she says, scratching head!
Mind wondering a bit for lack of sleep - will re-re-read later.
I like it that it's beeee U tee fullll though ;-)
Myabe I don't navigate to so many dnagerous sites... for it to be worth it?!?!

I'll study it some môre! Then think about it.
    Merci Beaucoup, Mangoette

  29. @LeKanaw:

Had BM'ed it - went there to investigate, but could never find the price.... Can't see if has to be renewed ea year either. It must be there somewhere... Just can't find it!!

It is under the "button" marked "Register" (Top Right, or Bottom Right)

You go on that and then select your currency - for Canadian it is currently - $27.67 CAD.

Renewals are based on version numbers - this is for all 4.x (for the past few years I've been on 4.x - The last few months have been moving from 4.71 -> 4.72 which is full Vista support. The detection rules are updated/refined daily (usually about 50-60kb per day), of course you can supplement those with your own if you desire. Most users can quite happily just install and forget - it won't infringe or block where you can go or what you can do - will just make the ad's and nasty scripts disappear.

But don't worry about purchasing it yet - they have a 30 day trial - download it and actually take the cow for a test drive for the 30 days to see what you think first.

Honestly, I must've used every type of AdBlocker, Host File Editor, proxy server and this is by far the easiest, most hands off, and best supported product (forums, email or an IRC channel to chat to the developers directly) for browsing I have found to date.
