I turn off automatic updates but later find that "something" has turned it back on!. Is Microsoft doing this? or am I turning off incorrectly? Surely Microsoft would not take over my computer.

Are you the only one who uses your computer? Because if you aren't it's possible someone else turned automatic updates on.

i am not 100% sure but i think the other day after installing some windows updates manually my computer reverted to automatic updates. It was set on check and advise but coming back to it one day it had just re-booted after installing an update that i had not even seen come up
It is posible that i have recently installed some software(maybe from here)that decided to change it for me,but i cannot think what it may have been thoughPosted 1 year ago # -
I'm glad someone else has noted this. I'm suspicious of Microsoft but who knows? No one else uses my computer. Just checked and it's done it again.

I haven't had a look at this in any fashion yet, but to rule out the obvious - a system restore point isn't involved in this, is it?

This might help.
To Disable Automatic updates - you can always disable the following two windows services.
Automatic Updates
Background Intelligent Transfer ServiceSome other articles and information about working with "unnecessary" windows services.

Thanks BuBBy..I went to your 2nd url and as advised went to Control Panel,Admin Tools then Services and turned off Auto Updates so I'll see what happens.

Great. Note that you also need to "disable" the service. If you only "stop" the service, it will start again when you reboot, or another process can also restart the service too.

Problem solved...why is it so complicated!
Posted 1 year ago # -
It's not complicated if you know about it.
I think maybe Microsoft prefer users don't 'accidentally' disable automatic updates.

I'm posting this as an update to my earlier problem. It's happening again no matter what I do. I suspect Norton Antivirus 2007(that recommends Automatic Updates as part of the overall security thingy) might be the culprit.

Possibly... Nortons is nasty. As an antivirus product Nortons is OK. As a team player on your computer - "playing nice" with everything else - Nortons has been known to have a slight "attitude problem". I prefer software that can accept that "Antivirus" isn't the reason why I have a computer.

Yep, Norton used to turn the auto-update function back on - prolly still does.

Yes folks it is Norton AND STUPID ME who doesn't read directions too clearly. Norton puts an icon on Start bar that has a red dot on it when something needs attention and I have been clicking it and simply clicking "Fix Now" without realizing that that "fixed" back to Auto Updates.....thanks for helping me sort myself out
