GOTD - Does it work for you?

Well I keep coming back, but can count on one hand the numbers of things that have been worth downloading.

    The usual process is:
    1. Am I interested in this at all (and you can't please everyone all the time, especially as anything big enough to be an all round "hit" is unlikely to end up on GOTD)
    2. Can I find "unconditional freeware" as an alternative, that I can install when I need it, and wherever I need it, or "portable freeware" that I can carry on a USB-stick.
    3. Can I be bothered. I tend to run no "OS-improvers", as this means no end of aggro if you get used to it and then use a system that doesn't have it. Also several of the more OS-related programs seem to have serious compatibility & uninstall issues.

So for me, GOTD is very much a second choice to free and unrestricted, but I guess I'll keep trawling for the occasional gem.

  2. Well the way I see it - the occasional gem is better than nothing.

Reading the daily comments, the way some people react when they have no need for a certain free giveaway is like the "useless offer" was a huge inconvenience to them.

I suspect if the same people were visited by their neighbour who had decided to bake them a cake simply as a kind gesture, they would abuse them screaming that they don't like chocolate icing and how inconsiderate the neighbour was, by baking something that is of no use to them.

Perhaps these unsatisfied users might be happier if GOTD always offered a program the user could use. But only made the offer once every 3 weeks. For the rest of the month, there was no offer available. Then I expect these users would complain that the offers don't come frequently enough - that GOTD should offer a new program at least once a day - but still every program must address a current issue the user has. What can you do?

At the end of the day - the decision to install a giveaway or not - is entirely up to the user. If the user doesn't like the free giveaway - it's not because GOTD is being "cheap" or "stingy" or only offering garbage. It is just because that is what is on the table, and no matter what - to someone, somewhere this is just what they have been looking for. To somebody else, this educates them to some software they previously knew nothing about, and to the software company letting thousands of people know that this company exists and a brief overview of the other products they offer.

If GOTD doesn't offer something I can use - there is always a freeware solution out there that should fit the bill. It's a big internet out there and when it comes to free software and special offers - it's available if you are willing to look. Failing that, I can simply purchase a license and have the program forever.

I guess I should mark the ones I have found positive...

    1. Blindwrite (jumped at this, as it's something I had heard of and might find a use for sometime).
    2. True Launch bar (yeah, I said I wasn't keen on OS improvers) only thing that attracted me was the caps lock light plugin that fits nicely into the bar, as I have a cordless keyboard and it's own utilty only pops up the status.
    3. I-sound recorder, as my old Win98 favourite, "messer" is really too old to be reliable on XP

Was very tempted by Aston Shell, but swerved that one after the problems everyone seemed to be having, also, with misgivings about getting dependent on a non-freeware alt-shell, however pretty!

TheLeecher, my "gem" was the Aston Shell haha! And if I ever lose it - I will buy it. Nothing wrong with trying out software and seeing how much you love/hate it. Nothing lasts forever, baby! Kat

I found a few programs that were very helpful, one program that I have found extremely helpful Amust Disk Cleaner. I took the Amust Registry Cleaner off my computer, but I kept Amust Disk Cleaner and I think it is actually a freebie http://www.amustsoft.com/disk-cleaner/

It doesn't actually clean the disk, but it shows you what folders/files are taking up the most space on your hard drive.

  6. The gems I am still using are "Sticky Password", "I-Sound Recorder", and "Smart Type Assistant".

@Michelle, for a freebie that shows what is taking up the space on your hard drive, check out Space Monger 1.4 http://www.sixty-five.cc/sm/v1x.php

The Shareware version 2.1 of Space Monger http://www.sixty-five.cc/sm/ would make a great giveaway (But best to wait until 2.2 is released).

It depends on how you view things in general. You said there have been very few useful programs as you can count on one hand how many you downloaded. You would rather have unrestricted freeware so GOATD is a second choice. Because of those two things you are now wondering if GAOTD works for you.

Even though there have so far only been a few programs you wanted, you would have had to pay for them otherwise. I guess for those particular programs you could not find freeware alternatives that were completely comparable, so you went with the second choice and got them here.

It's true you could have tried those programs without GAOTD, but only with time limitations or certain features disabled. Instead, by getting them here you got the registered versions with all features and without time limits. Go back to the page for each and add the total cost, that's how much you saved in money. Access to all features and no time limits represents how much you saved in aggravation.

To me it sounds like you got a pretty good deal, and because this site exists you now have a second choice if no completely comparable freeware is available. So I would say the site does indeed work for you. It depends on point of view, no?

I guess its kind of like a fishing trip to look everyday and see if there is something good. I also enjoy the comments with all the arguments about being ungrateful vs being helpful to the developers always a good read.

I have actually gotten maybe 3 worthwhile programs in the last 3 months. I kind of liked Aston Shell I hope they offer the updated one.

Well I will keep my fingers crossed for another good gem in the mean time I scan the posts for good freeware

    @Bubby

Thanks for the "space monger" mention... LOL this thing is hilarious to watch... very cool to see it open in front of your eyes. Can't wait to see what happens after it finishes the scan. (wow I need to burn a whole lotta pictures to disc from the looks of things already!)

    Thanks again

Heard of spacemonger, but I started off with Sequoiaview instead ... http://www.win.tue.nl/sequoiaview/ - another excellent space visualizer.

Or http://windirstat.info/ - more evolved in presentation than Sequoia

And for Linux users - http://kdirstat.sourceforge.net/

  11. That was my progression each time finding something better.

    Sequoiaview -> Windirstat -> SpaceMonger 1.4 -> SpaceMonger 2.11

Sequoiaview has a shortcoming in that it doesn't label the treemaps - so it shows there is a big block of data - but you still have no idea what it is just by looking at it. Perhaps the developers felt labelling the graph/map would make it look less "pretty".

The programs have progressed from looking nice, to being true file & data management tools to get a "birds eye view" of where all my free disk space went.

There are many others that just show a numeric total for each folder, but it's treemaps where the true state of your files / structure / layout is shown simply.
