Some rules to be written about

(64 posts)

  1. A typical set of rules and regulations to which I have signed upto in the past.

They seem firm enough, however some of them can be modified to fit this particular site.

We welcome you to participate in the Give Away Of The Day, however as with all social circles there are a few rules you must abide by in order to maintain your active membership within these message boards.

We are trying to provide the highest quality community experience for all of our members and following these guidelines is the best way to maintain a quality environment for all age groups. If we find that you break any of these rules, your account may be disabled and your posting privileges removed. These rules are very basic and we hope that you read them fully. .
No Graphic Material of either a macabre or pornographic nature.
Any posts or links to such content will not be tolerated.

    No Warez (links) & Cracks.
Help, requests or posts that discuss circumvention. This includes linking to illegally obtained software, movies & music files - posting about it, and suggesting to get it.

    No Cursing or Swear words.
We encourage you to use our Communities as a forum to debate topics, but please use proper adjectives to express yourself. We do not tolerate circumvention of our word filter or abuse upon another member.

No Racism, Threatening, Personal Attacks, No (citing) Victimization or Hateful posts / Retaliation of any kind against a user, or group of users.
If you are a long standing member, act like one; lead by example and assist other newer users rather then attacking them. We look upon our veteran users to use this opportunity to teach the newer users the appropriate way to conduct themselves in this community.

As above, if you are a long standing member, act like one. Lead by example and assist other newer members rather then attacking them. Members that reply to posts simply to instigate argument will be dealt with and shown no mercy.

Posts in a particular forum need to stay on topic.
If you want to talk about something that is drastically removed from the topic of a forum, please take it to General Discussion. General Discussion was set up and designed for members to discuss issues not related to a specific forum section. We welcome most general conversation in the General Discussion, but discourage it from other forums.
Use a title that describes the content of your post. Don't use all caps or special characters to draw attention.

    Unacceptable Forum or News comments.
While some members feel that post count is important, there are some posts we that feel do not contribute to the community in any way what-so-ever. Observe, because these are examples of unacceptable posts. If you wish to direct a fellow member to something that has already been posted, please do so in a courteous manner.

Comparing, judging the content/value or raising the opinion of other sites, recruiting members or staff, bad mouthing (or victimizing) & negative discussion about non/affiliate site issues on our forums is neither wanted or tolerated.

    No spamming, Ever!
Spamming is characterized by the initiation of threads or posts that contribute nothing to a forum, be it off topic or on topic. Examples include: empty bodies, bodies with few words that have no relation to the current thread or discussion and those posts that state they are spam, either to annoy, advertise or increase a member's post count. Resurrecting old forum posts is also not appreciated unless it serves a worthy cause to the forum. This determination is made by the forum Moderator or Administrator and is not up for discussion.

Give Away Of The Day requires that members respect the decision of moderators.
Threads and posts questioning the actions or decisions of forum moderations will be deleted on sight, and the appropriate action taken (up to and including forum bans) against the thread starter and/or participants. However, as a member you reserve the right to PM any moderator or administrator regarding action taken at

Reporting System: Do not abuse the report system, while we appreciate members reporting bad behavior, we don't appreciate rude comments or your opinion on how 'quick' staff are at handling problems around here.
    No alternate accounts are allowed.
Should you be disciplined with a restriction or ban, you are not allowed to open a new account to obtain freedom to post. Restrictions and bans are given for a reason, and usurping that ability by re-registering is not tolerated. If another account is opened, that account will be banned immediately, and the original account will be further penalized. Anyone who has warnings on their account are automatically excluded from changing their user name.

Give Away of The Day reserves the right to change or alter these rules at any time and an Administrator's or Moderators word is final.

You're really good at this Lee, being a moderator is in your blood and I hope you're enjoying it too. I, on the other hand, have more than enough from rules and regulations everywhere. What made internet so special for me was the freedom and anarchy that was the very backbone of it. This freedom is now dying, guess it has to, it was nice when it lasted.

    G.O.

  3. Well that probably depends on whether you view rules as restrictive or enabling.

It would be rules that permit you to express an opinion without being abused or witnessing offensive behaviour directed towards others. Rules would in effect provide an environment where the individual is respected and their rights protected.

Without rules you run the risk of a vocal minority destroying any chance of a positive online experience for the majority.

Hopefully the rules we agree to here will promote friendly and helpful communication. They will allow these forums to become a useful resource where people can easily find information or get assistance with GOTD related issues.

If it does that, I say rules are a good thing.

Shouldn't that read "rules we enforce here"?

  5. Some people see rules as something that results in punishment.
Other people see rules as a guide for correct and acceptable behaviour.
Depends which side of the prison bars you are standing on I suppose.

If participating within the rules causes someone ideological issues, they are quite welcome to not participate. That is their choice.

    • The Draft Forum Rules:

    1. Treat others with respect. Allow others to make their own choices in software (no religious wars). No foul language.

    2. No discussion or links related to warez. No publishing serial numbers or registration codes.

    3. When a software recommendation is being made - where possible a link to the developers/official site should be provided. Affiliate/Marketing links are not allowed and will be removed. (You should recommend a product because you believe it is a great product, not because you stand to make money by recommending multiple programs).

    4. For forum posts recommending software, the GOTD team may edit to remove off-topic discussion, incorrect (dead) URLs, or factual errors (eg. claiming something is Freeware when it is actually Shareware). Also excessive "banter" may be removed to keep these posts brief and concise.

    5. Keep questions for support and assistance in their own threads. Posting in a thread discussing another product may result in your cry for help, not being heard.

    6. When starting a new thread or topic - make your topic title "brief and descriptive". (a dozen topics with a title of "Please Help" does not help)

    7. When suggesting a program for a giveaway - please do not repeatedly post asking "when is it being given away"? Once the suggestion has been made - we will do what we can. We do not publish details of future giveaways.

  6. Also that needs to be added is:

No racist comments or remarks. That goes all ways, when the colour of someones skin is mentioned to put them or a group down then thats racist. That goes both ways. This includes using terms such as 'white trash', 'black this black that'.

No sexist comments. This works both ways.

No xenophobic remarks, this includes terms such as 'Paki', 'Pom', 'Frog', 'krout' etc.

No homophobic remarks, especially such terms as 'fag', dyke' etc. This includes mentioning your own sexuality, thats your personal business no-one elses.

I am not sure if we have a swear filter, however, if we do, no bypassing it.

Examples like fu-k, s-it, c-nt and any other swear words.

Sure more will arrive when others contribute.

  7. I was hoping people wouldn't need to state every permutation (including racism, sexism, theism?), and hoping the "respect other people" rule would cover all of this.

It would be sad if we need a rule list the size of "war and peace" in order to ensure every possible loophole is closed.

As lots of people have said - "the thing about common sense... it's actually not very common".

    Oh I see!
You're actually encouraging people to participate in creating a set of rules of conduct for this forum? (or even for the whole site?) That was not clear to me from the thread title nor from the content of Lee's opening post.

Maybe a better option for you will be to discuss this amongst yourselves somehow? If I got it right, you have a team of 3 mods and at least 1 admin now. With your commutative knowledge and expertise it shouldn't be difficult at all. There's no need to play the democracy game here, really.

Well how can you count having a religous war in this point?

    Doesn't make sense.

Better would be the point I wrote from another forum:

No Racism, Threatening, Personal Attacks, No (citing) Victimization or Hateful posts / Retaliation of any kind against a user, or group of users.

You could then argue the toss that agnostics, buddhists, atheists & pagans don't come under religous groups as they do not follow a religion such as Christianity, Judaism or Islam.

Still needs to be fine tuned so that users can feel comfortable, users feel they will not be victimised and also that cannot victimise.

    I like concise:

RULE 1. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you
RULE 2. Violate RULE 1 and you will be shot.
RULE 3. Survive RULE 2 and you will be shot again.

    ...But seriously,

I doubt this subject is yet ready for member debate.
Lee & BuBBy - You each have e-mail and IM, perhaps even Skype, I presume. It may be best to get your heads together, draft something simple and concise, then post for member feedback.

    What say ye?

<grin> Thanks Bobby (I'm using ESP - Have a feeling you are about to post).

Interesting comments, all. Have you considered review of the IGF (Internet Governance Forum) for ideas?

<grin> good military perspective there, Wolven.

There are still some places left on internet where the public can post absolutely free of moderation of any sort. The worst it gets is some flaming and badmouthing. So what? It might look like chaos sometimes, but it always settles down at the end.

The difference here is that GAOTD is a commercial business and as such it's understandable they don't want a situation which might lead to actual revenue losses. A case in point was the false accusations of planted malware in the downloaded software. For that end it's understandable they need policing, which is what moderators are about.

Question is then, shouldn't Lee and Bubby & Co be paid? I think they should.

Business is business! Where money is being made the one who works for free is being misused. I don't know any other word for it. Well, exploited perhaps?

    Sorry, that's my bad. I should've clarified - internet/software/platform religious wars.

I'm referring to the never ending arguments between windows/mac/linux playstation/xbox microsoft/apple. The type of arguments that will never end, continue to raise the same points to support their view, a fanatical fight to the death, and neither side will see or accept the others viewpoint.

The other type of religious war (between religions - just doesn't belong here at all, any more than the discussion on breeding techniques of frogs).

Question regarding the pm function. How do we pm the moderators or any user?

    Hi,
Your draft is very good, BuBBy, but if I could make a suggestion, add "Bumping" of topics or threads to be disallowed, it starts out being, annoying and then gets to be very aggrivating in a hurrry, for everyone, to see that happen very often. Most forums I go to, do not allow it. Other than that I think you pretty much have it covered.
    Take care,
    Barry

  20. @Michelle - I'd say a lot of the rules don't make sense here, as we don't have an equivalent: we cannot post graphic images, no word filter, no PM (private message), and no report system.

@Barry - I agree 200% about "Bumping". To the above rules - I will add.

    - No links to graphic material of either a macabre or pornographic nature.
    - No discussion or links related to or discussing circumvention of copyright or licensing laws, or illegally obtaining such materials (This includes software, music and video)
    - No Spam, No Bumping, No ALL CAPS, No Multiple accounts. No, No, No !

Oh I see, though it's possible we could get the pm function in near future if many people ask for it. The more people that ask for it the better chance we will get it. At least that is what I think Lee said regarding the pm function.

    Posted 1 year ago #
  22. Well I can't dispute that - "The more people who ask for it the better chance we will get it". It leaves some interpretation how close to 100% does a "better chance" actually become. (3% is a better chance than 2%).

It would certainly allow for some flexibility if people could send the moderators or admins a private message or request. But I'm getting ahead of myself. At the moment there definitely isn't any PM functionality.

Posted 1 year ago # | Login to Send PM
  23. Two moderators at that mentioned site are real jerks.

However I thought it was the closest and worth taking some options from to fit here.

As for OPS only one winner, linux, he he.

Regarding certain functions, if you wish to use contact form and send requests, I am sure it could happen.

I did have a quick look at the site mentioned. I didn't know it was a site (forum) till Bubby mentioned and then I had a quick look and there were many people online and many guests. I never registered for the forum.

How many requests can one person make Lee? I mean could you sit there all day long and e-mail giveawayoftheday.com about the pm function? LOL. It's going to take more than just me.

    Posted 1 year ago #
  25. I did remove it from being mentioned as I did not want to be seen as using their rules
as ours, which was not intention I just found them the best so far.

Infact if it wasn't for a news poster there I would not have found this site.

So I didn't want the site thinking we were alf inchin their rules.

You might want to join that forum as it's very addictive and one of the best.

I will email slava myself now, hopefully if we start now and others reading this thread also use the contact sheet then hopefully it can happen soon.

    Edit

    I just sent this:

Any chance of adding a pm function, then in future avatar and sigs Slava?

    Thanks Lee

Thank you, I wasn't telling you to do it though. It's nice that you are doing it, but I hope because you wanted to.

With regards to the site I may register one day and I may learn a thing or two.

Could I just copy and paste what you sent and sign my name instead of your's? Forget it I'll just ask about the pm function. It would be nice to add avatars but that will just take longer for the board to load and it would be nice to add signatures, but on most boards other then security forums that doesn't work out too well.

The only board I have ever been to that is has remained in place is the Mcafee forum. Usually I found out a lot of administrators or at least on the boards where I been to disable signatures because of abuse.

    I just sent this

Could you could add a pm function to the giveawayoftheday.com forums?

    Thank you.

    Michelle

As for the avatars and the signatures Lee I don't think they would be enabled that long before they got disabled.

Thank you for asking about the pm function and thank you to anyone else who requests it.

I agree with the PM function, however, don't thank ME. If Admin are too busy to occasionally scan their own site for requests/problems et cetera, and post the odd, brief reply, then I am too busy to use their contact sheet.

Sigs are unnecessary here - Avatars are fun, but do we need them?

Well then don't do it Wolven.

Not really, but I think Lee requested what some people may ask for in the near future. It was nice of him.

    A question about this part

"Comparing, judging the content/value or raising the opinion of other sites, recruiting members or staff, bad mouthing (or victimizing) & negative discussion about non/affiliate site issues on our forums is neither wanted or tolerated."

We can't do that here especially the part about recruiting members or staff?

I am on Lee's side, "Thanks Lee" - Also agree with your request, Michelle.
Remember, the Moderators are volunteers. Member's (also unpaid) suggestions can enhance this site. It would be nice if Admin would poke their head in here from time to time, to help moderators, and perhaps leave a brief note to member suggestions, a la, "Thanks for a good suggestion. We will look in to it and have a moderator get back to you"....But they rarely, if ever, do.

    Thazall.
