   I have Vista Home Premium, Service Pack 2 on my computer. For the past week or so, the Windows Defender icon in the taskbar shows an alert symbol that WD needs to be updated. However, when I check for updates, everything shows to be updated. The alert also shows up in Control Panel/Security/Windows Defender. Does anybody know what's up with this and how to correct it?    Brian, Have you tried restarting your computer? see if that works.

   You can manually update Windows Defender. The updates come out daily.

   I have the same thing on my computer, i have restarted several times but still comes up, thats windows for you

   I've had no problems! I've got Vista Ultimate SP2. I've had several updates lately, including the big monthly one at the beginning of the week but no "false alarms".

   Than again, I shut down my PC every evening and boot it clean each morning. It only checks for an update once a day and if nothing new is there, it goes into "monitor mode".

   I'm waiting for all the language packs to show up. I had about 35 originally that went away when I got SP1 and then came back a few weeks later. It's been longer since I've updated to SP2 and still no language packs. I don't install them, I just ignore them (along with Dreamscape and Windows Live Essentials).

   I think there is a menu item somewhere for checking updates. I think it's under the Help menu. Try that. It should work...

   I think some of you folks are misunderstanding Brian. I think he's saying it's updating normally but warning him that it isn't. If I'm understanding you correctly, Brian, you're looking at the bottom of the front screen of Defender and you're seeing the update version and date changing on a consistent basis. I'm not sure it's everday, but it should be. Is that the case? The problem is, Windows Update problems can be tough to run down. I've been chasing down similar bugs, and could put you onto some more solutions if you need them.

   But as I understand it, that's not your problem. A false alert is your problem. If that's so, maybe we can help you with that.
