Junior Icon Editor - freeware?

I downloaded Junior Icon Editor from the freeware library.

According to the brief search description it says: "Use this free utility to edit Windows icons. It contains a variety of paint tools to let you edit icons in either standard or custom sizes..."

In reading the full description it says: "...and fill in the squares to create an icon that maximizes your artistic skills. Junior Icon Editor is free!"

Installation went perfect. When opening the software the main splash screen shows unregistered trial version. It is good for 15 days. Is this or is this not freeware? If so where to I obtain the registration code. If it is not, why does it say free in both descriptions?

    Any thoughts?

  2. Some programs are incorrectly listed as freeware. Other sites classify programs as "Free Download". This is not the same as Freeware.

True freeware does not expire, is not crippled, and generally has no restrictions except possibly excluding commercial usage, and the author retaining copyright.

The fact this program displays "unregistered trial version" and is good for only 15 days - means it is definitely not freeware.

I agree with you. If you do a search for "free game software" you will definately get the "free download" software as well.

I was under the impression that listings in the FREEWARE LIBRARY was just that, freeware software. When digging further, by visiting the home page listed on the library page, you notice the trial limitations and cost.

Why then is it listed here if it is not free? Who determines what gets listed there?

A little "false advertising" going on here?

Please don't get me wrong. Since I have found this site, I visit it everyday and truly do appreciate the giveaways of software, although I don't take advantage of every one. I just didn't realize until after I download my first piece of software from the freeware library that what I wanted wasn't really free.

    Live and learn.

    Thanks for the thoughts.

  4. The free download is such a pain, when you search for freeware.

Fell for that a few times myself.

  5. Junior Icon Editor is not a freeware, you can free trial with limitations: 15-day trial period, the price is $19.95.

    good luck.

    http://www.snapfiles.com/Freeware/gmm/fwicontools.html - a few options here.

About the only site I've seen that manages to maintain a good seperation - other than a few promotional suggestions of shareware (hey! got to pay the bills somehow), you choose freeware, you GET freeware, not the largest selection, but few if any duds.

I hate "free download", maybe worth using as a "NOT" condition in any searches, and I refuse to consider any software or company that indulges in such abusive SEO practices.

Yeah some freewares have trails and you need to pay when the time is over. Also some limit the number of features you can use. I simple key or crack maybe he needed to unlock this problem.

Everybody wants to get paid in some way for their hard work. There are a few exceptions but there is still a lot of free stuff out there.

  18. Wolven,

I have used AWIcons Lite too. One really nice thing about it is that you can edit cursors and animated cursors as well. That comes in handy now and then.
