  2. Without knowing what is going to be offered tomorrow or the next day - I couldn't say. Most software in the past should've run just fine. You can always visit the vendors website each day to see if Vista compatibility is mentioned anywhere. Or ask about a particular program on the day it is offered for giveaway.

  4. It will say if it's vista compatible in description, example: runs on 9x/2k/xp/vista etc.

Suprised anyone is using vista, I will wait till sp2 at least.

  5. @Lee - I'd recommend waiting also, but anyone purchasing a new PC will unfortunately not have much choice as it will come with Vista installed.

Lots of software, that runs ok on XP should be ok on Vista - but there will always be exceptions and "suprises".

  7. XP is da bomb! Best OPS since win95.

You can say (when buying a new pc) you want it to come without an OPS. Then goto amazon and buy o.e.m. windows xp sp2.

It is dropping in price, amazon.co.uk must have bad sales as they are giving away half price software with it also as well as dropping the price.

  8. Yes you could request that your new PC comes without an OS. But many big vendors may not do it - and the typical "mum and dad" buying a PC for their son Jimmy to help with his homework - won't even know what an OS is - let alone the difference between XP Oem and Vista Retail/OEM. They will just buy a computer with whatever OS it has on it - ie. Vista.

My point is regardless of what anyone here thinks about Vista compared to XP - now that Vista has been released - the numbers of users coming to GOTD (and everywhere else) will only continue to climb - and XP number will continue to drop. That's just the way it is.

As I said - I'm not going anywhere... XP is staying put on ALL my PCs.

  9. not a lot will work with Vista http://www.cio.com/article/364163/XP_Change_Corrupts_Data_Hamstrings_SP_Rollout

May 21, 2008 — Computerworld — Microsoft Corp. confirmed on Wednesday that it delayed the rollout of Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) because changes to the operating system can corrupt data in the company's retail point-of-sale and store management software.

The company has also suspended automatic distribution of Windows Vista Service Pack 1. "Yes, we are temporarily holding any additional automatic distribution of Windows Vista SP1," said a spokeswoman for Microsoft. hope sp3 for Vista is better than XP sp3
