Just to let people know that for this day only Left 4 Dead is free to play on Steam.
Don't know what timezone they are based in as to which hours GMT this works out at.

Thanks SpodoCommodo, wish I was going to be home today! It says on the web page 'Play FREE TODAY until 11:59pm GMT (Friday 4:59pm PDT).' I think there's an hour missing in there somewhere...
You are of course right about 11:59pm GMT - I noticed that the game was mentioned on teletext first thing this morning and then only saw the news page on the steam hub where it says that it is a 24 hr free trial without mention of the time. And since I'm not intending to play it I didn't look for further details.
That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!!!
Yeah, I only looked deeper because I was hoping it was a free download, I didn't realise it was free to play today. I don't really use steam so I didn't understand till I saw it. Wishful thinking! It is 40% off (£16.19) this weekend, however.
I started playing it a minute after midnight this morning and quite enjoyed the game, though after an hours play (singleplayer) I decided to have a break and return later. I expected to be able to return to my last save pont, but it took me back to the beginning again, which was a little annoying, but hey, whose to complain for a free session. Anyway, I completed the single player portion of the game in around four hours; though at the time I thought it was just the first section; howevever that's it for the single player part of the game. I'm primarily a SP fanatic, so doubt I'll be buying this version despite the 40% off; though I was tempted until I found that the SP portion was so short. Apparently the game of the year version which is released in two weeks time will contain more content with four different sets that include urban and rural environments. So I think I'll wait for that as it was definitely a playable game. (It'll cost me about £8 more but it'll be worth it).
There's less than three hours left of the offer here in the UK, so it may be a little too late as it'll take a while to download as well.
Was GMT +0 time, so in NZ is Friday Midday - Saturday Midday
EDIT: Extended for another 17 hours (Sat 5pm)
Thanks for the heads up Chronopie. Iwould have miss the extra time if I'd not seen your edit.
I wished I would have seen your post rabbit before I bought Left 4 Dead. Hopefully they will update old copies. I've bought worse games for more than 20 bucks.
Man, awesome! I can finally get a full copy of L4D to replace my demo copy.
(In case you were wondering: I got a backup of the demo released before the official game release day.)
I was wrong about the single player campaign. There are four different scenarios, each split up into five or six missions, which run ncurently while you are playing the game. I'm definitely going to buy the game of the year version.
Maybe there will be a patch like there was for Unreal Tournament Black. I bought the Black version via Steam and was surprised to find there were additional modes and maps. However I later found that my DVD copy could be updated by applying the latest patch though it remained red as opposed to black. It would seem grossly ufair if those that bought the earlier version didn't get the extra content for free.
The free weekend finised about an hour ago yet my game is still running. I think it continue until you close it down, so I'm keeping it open until I've played all the single player campaigns, lol. I've only got one more to do and I'll be sated.
Ehh... My download didn't finish before the free weekend ended, so I never got to play. However, at least I have the complete set of files, so I'll do something with them...
Despite having played the whole of the single player campaign, I do think the game is worth buying. I played it on easy and the hardest setting to see what the difference was. I was hoping for hords more undead on the harder setti, but all it seeedo do was reduce my health easier. I died within about 10 minutes of game play on the hardest setting, lol.
I thought I was getting loads of free time, but when I closed the game down a few minutes ago nearly 10 hours after the last deadline, there was a new message saying the free play had been held over for the night, plus it also said that the game included the extra content that the game of the year version will include on disk. As the disk version (which as mentioned previously is released in 2 weeks) is £8 more I've decided to go with steams offer. I don't think having a hard copy is worth the extra money. Now I can go to bed, lol.
