I had a problem a couple of weeks ago where my keyboard stopped working inside of Windows Vista. I fixed the keyboard problem by upgrading from Vista Basic to Vista Basic with my Gateway laptop CD. Then my sound stopped working. I downloaded the driver from Gateway and the system says the driver is installed and device is working properly, but my sound is still not working. No Audio Output Device is Installed and Open Volume Mixer is greyed out. Anyone had a similar problem?

The only time I have had that problem is when either the speakers weren't properly plugged in, or when the system had been 'Muted'. I had that happen just the other day, only to discover, when opening my sound manager, that it was, indeed, on Mute. I unmuted it, and went on from there. :D

The sound is not muted. The Device Manager has no question marks or exclamation points in it. The sound device is Sigma Tel High Definition Audio Codec and is shown to be functioning properly. Updating the driver reports that I have the most recent driver installed. Rollback is greyed out. Sfc /scannow does not fix it. It is a laptop computer with built in speakers.

Hello penneddragon, it sounds like your audio drivers are corrupted or the windows audio service is not running.
First, enter "services.msc" in the start menu search field. Scroll down near the bottom and look for "Windows Audio". Make sure the Status is "Started". If it is currently Started, right click on and select restart. If the service is not started, right-click and select Start. Then check to see whether your audio is working.
If audio is still not working check the Device Manager. Enter "devmgmt.msc" in the start menu search field. If the Device Manager is aware of any hardware problems the tree of those items will be expanded automatically. A yellow exclamtion mark will be displayed next to any hardware that is not functioning properly, similarly a red x means the hardware is currently disabled. If neither icon is shown next to your sound device your drivers are likely corrupted. Right click on the audio device and select uninstall. This will uninstall the current audio drivers. Then reinstall your audio drivers. Hopefully that settles your problem, good luck!

When I tried to restart the service the green activity bar did not pass through to the end. It ended after flowing 1/10 the way down the bar. However, the service said it was started. I tried the second solution with device manager. Uninstalling the driver didn't work. Updating the driver didn't work. There is no rollback option either. I tried restoring the backed up driver from Driver Magician. That didn't work. I downloaded and installed the driver from my laptop mfg. That didn't work either. Thank you for your suggestions. Appreciate the effort and advice.

Sorry SimpleMinded, you're great!!!!!!!!!!! I didn't check the checkbox in the driver uninstall confirm box. XP didn't have it so I thought it wasn't necessary to check it in Vista. So it just kept putting the corrupt driver back in when I scanned for hardware changes. It works now. Thank you so much!!!! I've been struggling with this for two weeks.
