I have the same problem.. when I click it, I hear a loud 'ping' and then nothing.
Yep that sounds familiar. Anyone not having this problem who is running XP-SP2? I tried uninstalling it and then reinstalling and it still will not get past the splash screen.
I'm running XP SP2 as well.
I’m having the same problem as you. I have WinXP SP2. I had the prior version but it said it was invalid, so totally uninstalled that including the registry entries, then installed this one. Now all I get is just the spash screen, and a ping sound, then it’s gone. When I opened my task manager under programs it showed it was running, but not any place I could find. Is there a ‘fix’ for this?
Update: With all the problems, I figured I don't really need it that badly after all, so now have uninstalled it. Already have several other burning programs, so all is not lost.
copmom see if it's in C:\Program Files\Give Away Of The Day\StarBurn because that's where it runs in mine. Incidentally, I'm xp sp2, not having any problems. But here's a head twister for one and all. Today's GAOTD is Starburn v.10. I didn't see any need to upgrade because that's the same version I installed the last time it was offered here which was on 3/28/08 StarBurn v.10, same as today (and I'd be happy to send anyone a screenshot who doesn't believe me).
People twitch everytime they see a big price tag, which in most cases they're justified in doing so. The exception being software. I bet you there were land speed records broken by people who couldn't download this thing fast enough. They saw that $500.00 and zoom, zoom, let me at that keyboard, WikiSend must have been glowing. Don't get me wrong I was just late getting to my PC this morning so I had the benefit of reading some scary posts, that otherwise... Sorry to hear about your loss though, how do the French put it, "say la vie!"
I'm more surprised so many people are using SP2 at this point....
I upgraded to SP3 awhile ago, and the sky didnt fall....
I thought that it would update automatically on it own but I guess not. I have heard a few horror stories about people who had installed SP3 so I was in no hurry. I probably will do it one of these days.
Same here: splash screen, ping, nothing.
I got this before when it was offered and really liked it. Then it stopped working with the same symptoms people here are finding. I hoped a new download would solve the problem.
Even stranger: Normally, once I activate a program my browser opens to a "Now what" screen from GAOTD. Not this time. Instead I got a screen that said "This giveaway is no longer offered." It then goes on to explain that this was a March 18 offering and is no longer available for download.
Does anybody who actually answers questions ever come here, or is this forum only a place to feel better by venting?
Proffate,
I am surprised that none of the moderator have posted here yet. Usually they hop right on it when there is a problem like this. Hopefully they are working on a solution.
I'm on Vista Home Premium and when I double click on my shortcut icon, I get the splash screen and then nothing. So I right clicked on the icon and selected "Burn now." Then it started up. Perhaps it was running but was just waiting for me to have something to burn?
I have 3 computers, a desktop a laptop and a virtual machine. All are XP pro sp2.
The desktop is the oldest so it has the previous version of starburn installed. I haven't used it in a while sp I fired it and surprisingly got the same errors other people are having after uninstaling the older version and installing the new one. A bunch of dll messages and version should be this instead of that and so on, but if I answer all the error messages correctly it starts and may work.
I installed the new one in both the laptop and the virtual machine and I am getting the same error as everybody here. A start screen, a ping and nothing. There are two processes on is a service for starwin lite and the other is the one that starts when star burn is ran. It lingers for a while and then it dies.
I have ben able to start the different wizards from the GAOTD folder, but I have not test them. I installed the version on the VM using Ashampoo Uninstaller and I remoced all traces of it. The one in the laptop was installed without the uninstaller, but it makes no difference.
I remember that this program requires a restart in order to work. Maybe that's where everybody is having trouble with. I am going to do a Uninstaller install but will reboot before running it once. I'll let you know how it goes.

I have read three comments that say that the culprit is Romeo Disk burner. If it is installed in your system starburn won't work. If you uninstall Romeo, starburn works. This explains all my problems cause I installed Romeo when it was last offered and that sort of broke my starburn.
I also have Romeo in the laptop and the virtual machine. I never like Romeo that much, the version prior to the one I have now broke the startup sequence and gave my desktop lots of problems which took me a long time to fix
AxCut
AxCut! Maybe that's the answer! I keep seeing references to Romeo popping up here and there and truthfully didn't remember what it was! So, let me uninstall Romeo, and see if I can get this one to work or not. Will let you know in a little bit!
AxCut! You solved the problem!! I uninstalled Romeo, and then did a new download and install of StarBurn, and viola .. it now works! I looked in Explorer, found in the GOTD directory under StarBurn/wizards, 2 entries. Starburn Limited.exe and Starburn Total.exe
both measuring 3035 kb, and both dated 7/31/08.
Anyway, now it works!! Maybe I need to cross post this in the StarBurn download for others to see how the problem was solved!
-------------------------------------------------------------------
ADDENDUM: When I did check the Romeo program, before uninstalling it, I found there were a couple of similar files that were in Starburn. DLL's. So that might have been causing the conflict!
Hey, I did the same thing on my Vista Home Premium. I uninstalled Romeo. I didn't even have to uninstall/reinstall Sarburn. It started right up.
Good deal nonie.. glad it worked for you too. Now I just hope all the people that were upset on the download page will check the latest comments and get theirs running too!
Well this wasn't the cure to my problem.
It install ok but went to run the program and the first screen that popped up was one telling me that this was registered to Giveawayoftheday day, that goes away after a few seconds to be replaced by a small error message saying "Failed To Create Empty Document"
pops up and the program will not load.
Uninstalled, clean traces with CCleaner and reinstall with same results. Seeing others too were having the same problem on the comments page, I also wanted to post that I too was having this problem, but for some reason my posting didn't get past the moderators. I posted the same way as above.
Anyway, I was reading here and the comments page on how the Starburn.dll in the Romeo program might be the culprit into not allowing the program to run. So I took out Romeo which is only a back up to my Nero and all traces of it and reinstalled StarBurn and still same problem. Too bad, I thought this one would have been better to have then Romeo as a back up too.
I dont have Romeo, and still have the same problem after the splash screen, I'm on Windows Home Xp SP3....
Hey copmom if you had read the comments I told you about the two programs interfering with one another post #149 I found it to be a dll problem and could actually keep both programs after changes to my dll files but a quick fix was to tell everyone that wanted StarBurn instead of Romeo to delete the Romeo. I guess you will read the Forum but dont bother to read the comments I like to read the comments some are funny and some people honestly need help and if I can help I will. But thanks Axcut for posting my fix to the forum. LOL
Just for information in case anyone is interested, I did a search through all my directories for starburn.dll and all the occurences were from GOTD programs. In alphabetical order, these were:
Abyssmedia Audio CD Burner
Advanced Audio Recorder
Romeo
Starburn 9.0, 9.5 and 10
Something broke Audio CD Burner so I uninstalled it, and I had been having the same problem with StarBurn 9.5 and 10 not fully opening, as many others have reported. I have uninstalled Romeo, as it gave an error when opening anyway, and now StarBurn 9.5 and 10 run ok.
What I find interesting is that both StarBurn 9.5 and 10 failed to work correctly with Romeo but StarBurn 9.0 did open properly.
And please don't ask why I have 3 versions - it was to ensure I had at least one working version if that day's installation failed for any reason.
Advanced Audio Recorder did not seem to have been affected.
Well that's interesting that all of those programs all had the same .dll! Makes no sense, I just did a search for starburn.dll, and so far it's in:
Program Files\Advanced Audio Recorder
Program Files\GAOTD\Starburn\Wizards
For that matter don't even know why I've got Advanced Audio Recorder.. got too many things on here that looked good for some reason or other and then I never even use them!
At any rate, removing Romeo did the trick for me.
As for why you have 3 versions, you're probably a pack rat like me and want to have something to fall back on in case one or the other doesn't work?
ADDENDUM: Also just found a Starburn sub-directory with ws.burn.exe in it under Wondershare Photo Story Gold on here.
