Are talking about a certain msi file program downloaded from here or just any msi file you get or come across? And does the error message have an error code number or value number with it?

    ActivePerl-5.8.8.822-MSWin32-x86-280952 , apache_2.0.63-win32-x86-no_ssl..etc..

it shows nor error code number.
It shows one popup ..eith the error "The installation package could notv be opened.Contact the application vendor to verify that thius is valid windows Installer package."

I update my windows installer by downloading from web.

    but no any change.

It still gives the same error....

A little more information about the system you're using would help.
Which windows version are you running, Windows XP (SP1 OR SP2 OR SP3) Vista?

I know with some .MSI files you have to be the administrator on your computer to install them if your computer is set that way. Vista is known for this.

ActivePerl is a open source script code used for programing. And Apache is a open-source web server software used a lot on Unix and Linux severs.

This is the value number-1620 you should be getting with the error code,

"1620 This installation package could not be opened. Contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package. ERROR_INSTALL_PACKAGE_INVALID"

If this is just happening on just one program you're trying to install then contact that company and see if you are using the right file or does it need to be open by an administrator.

    System:
    Microsoft WindowsXP
    Professional
    Version 2002
    Service Pack 2

    Computer:
    Intel(R) core(TM)2 Duo CPU
    T5450

First There was Vista. After that XP installed. I was able to execute .msi file.
But because of some viruses I formatted PC and installed XP again.

How can I check that I am administrator or not?

But it is not only for activeperl.I also tried apache_2.0.63-win32-x86-no_ssl ...it shows the same error for that..

Not knowing how you had your windows setup I’ll go over a few things with you. If you had set up windows xp where you need to sign in a password every time you turn on your computer to get into windows then usually the first account is the main account and should be set as administrator. Any other account names added need to be set to have administrator privileges to do what the main account can. (I’m the only one that runs my computer and I don’t store any personal information on here. I just have it where I turn my computer on and it just goes straight to windows without having to log in.) There are a couple ways to check if you have administrator privileges.

Right click on the START MENU button, a list opens up. If you see "Open All Users" rather than just "Open," then the account is in the local Administrators group.

Some programs that you install or run you have to right click on the program's icon and you'll see run as_ _ to open the file or program it gives a couple of choices.

In control panel you should be able to access User Accounts to change or tweak any settings.

If you think you are set for administrator do the following to see about the MSI problem you are having:

Go to control panel. Click on Administrative Tools. Click on services. Scroll down the list until you find the Windows Installer. Highlight the line and right click and then click Start to start the service.

Then try installing the MSI package again.

You did post that you had to install Window XP, you might be missing a fix or patch so if you still have a problem go here and update your windows.

Make sure your Windows XP is all up to date with all the latest updates and patches for SP2. At this time avoid downloading SP3 for a few months till they work all the problems. Too many bugs with SP3 right at the moment.
