AVG8 FREE AntiV Software

AVG is one of the programs that caused me heartache this past weekend! It was always running in the background and didn't provide an option for me to use it WHEN I wanted to! It wouldn't even allow me to terminate 4 things it showed as running in task manager. It conflicted with some of the other programs I had installed from PC Tools.. long story short, system restore, as well as delete, delete, delete! That's why I've been so interested in ghosting/cloning my HD to avoid that again.

AVG's anti-V routinely scores at or near the top of the field. According to the review, AVG8 anti-V garnered a top rating, though the full suite wasn't impressive. I never liked full suites. Despite every developer making the one-stop shopping pitch and claiming to have the best integration, I prefer to use individually highly rated appls.
Seems conflicts are occurring all over the place, a fact of life as the variables of # of developers, types of software, and OS variants rise exponentially. Logic would have you expect incompatibilities more from smaller or non-standard companies than from the big guys, but with suites and bloat, clearly that isn't the case. Did you try posting queries on the AVG Free Forums before embarking on a painful system restore?

Good luck with AVG's 8 lacking FREE forums . . . be sure you read all the posting guidelines or you won't be happy with the help you're NOT offered by their moderators. You can expect their initial system scan to fine hundreds of "possible" dangers. I haven't had any issues (yet) but many have. I disabled "automatically" fix ANYTHING. If now possible, besides NOT installing the new AVG security toolbar, try and not install the "link scanner" too, as it's apparently greatly slowing down FFox. IF it's not possible to "pass" on the link-scanner, disabling it thru FFx tools won't result in your AVG tray displaying an alarming ! point. You'll see.
If I had any cajones, I'd likely try another brand now that AVG8Free is so bloated . . . with the anti-spy and all that.
Getting answers from the free forums is exasperating! Have a look. It's maddening!!!!Posted 1 month ago # -
Grouch, I've downloaded the new AVG FREE anti-V, but haven't installed it yet. As I said previously, I don't like suites, and it's just common sense not to allow any software to do much of anything "automatically", certainly not an unknown product or a new version of an old product. Personally speaking, I won't be enabling anything except the highly rated anti-V. It isn't wise to double up on certain operations anyway, e.g., firewalls or active malware or links checkers, because it's known to cause slow downs and conflicts. Guess I've been doing something right because I just ran EWIDO's Online Scanner (they're a member of AVG) and it found absolutely nothing to fix. Over the last few years, that's the same result I get from SpyBot, Lavasoft, ScanIt, Verisign, Panda Nano, TrendMicro and XClean, too.
Your complaint that AVG found "hundreds of possible dangers" doesn't surprise me, if the full suiteload of check and repair functions was enabled. FWIW, several other similarly good products mentioned in these forums, e.g., Registry Mechanic and I believe FixIt Utilities, discovered hundreds of "possible problems" and to be quite frank, many were very questionable. I did not permit them to "fix" all. Woe be it if a PC newbie downloads some of the free but not-ready-for-primetime repair utilities GAOTD offers and then foolishly gives carte blanc repair privileges!
I won't allow any custom toolbars from any developer to be installed on my system, partly because of the trouble many cause, partly because I don't like companies having intimate access to my system, and partly because I don't want my monitor to look like this!
Every linkscanner I've run seems to slow down my system, but by adding my most frequently visited sites to the exclusion list, things perk right up.Posted 1 month ago # -
Good luck with that limited function install, Rune . . . I think you'll find the AVG "something's wrong" tray a concern when disabling options . . . it's a real nuisance. It's pretty obvious with this build that AVG8Free considers itself the most important app ever and they do not want the user making any real decisions, as far as the set-up is concerned anyway . . . ie: it's not written to allow you to just use the AV engine, at least it wasn't yesterday.
Had I not had a fairly decent experience thru the years with AVG7-7.5, I'd definitely try some other free AV at this point, but after a 3+ hour DL for me, I'll hang in there until I have a AVG related problem.

Thanks Grouch. Aside from their irritating habit of sometimes downloading updates that require a reboot to take effect (always timed to the most inopportune moment when I have 39 other browser windows running) I've been happy with AVG, too.
3 HOUR download?? Didn't think anyone was still using those antique 300 baud modems. :-) Seriously, just to make sure we're on the same page... you did follow the link that said "The product will be available for download from http://free.avg.com starting on Thursday, April 24."
The d/l for AVG Anti-Virus Free 8 was only about 46mb, a lot smaller than the similarly named AVG Security Suite 8.Posted 1 month ago # -
Ok, so now ya know why I'm so GrouchE . . . all that waiting!
But seriously, at 56k (52actual/varies) about 2 and 1/2, and I can't do much of anything else on-line during that time, unless I want to risk pausing the dl (have lost connection doing this) so it seems like at least 3!
And it's the free8.
