  1. FREE - 1 Year iolo AntiVirus

If you have not heard of iolo before, they have a very popular PC tuning product called System Mechanic which has been around for many years.

    1. Visit http://www.iolo.com/ads/vnu/avpromo.aspx and click Continue button. You should see a page with the Item Code AV1FPRM, Description iolo Antivirus Free Promotion, 3 PC, One Year with the order total showing $0.00. Click Secure Checkout button.

    2. Enter your first name, last name, address 1, city, postal code, country phone number and email address. You can actually enter fake or bogus information but make sure the email address is a real one, (best to use a disposable one if you have one). Click Continue button.

    3. Make sure Email Delivery is selected and click Continue button.

    4. Review Order page will load and click Place Order button.

    5. Once you see a page that says “Thank you! Your order #XXXXXXXXXXXXXX is complete.”, check the email address that you’ve entered at step 2. Open the email from iolo technologies, LLC (orders@iolo.com) with the subject “Thank you for ordering from iolo technologies, #XXXXXXXXXXXXXX“?. Note down the User ID and Serial Number.

    6. Download iolo AntiVirus at http://download.iolo.net/av/1/trial/ioloAntiVirus.exe and install.

    7. Select "I own iolo AntiVirus and can enter my serial number later" and click Next.

    8. Enter the User ID and Serial # that you noted down earlier. Click OK and continue with the installation.

Hey K8 . . . Are you Raymond, or just keeping folks from visiting his site by lifting HIS finds?
Then again, maybe HE'S stealing yours. Whichever, try and find a useful review of this iolo product. I looked for over an hour and found nothing useful. Kinda hate to mess with fresh AVG8free install, but would IF I could find some positive feedback on iolo AV.
BTW- the steps work great, except you may need to disable ad-block to get the initial page to load all the way with FireFox.

    Thanks K8.
I wonder if they still use the Kaspersky engine...

Robt - Could be, but I haven't found any reference to this? I know it's less than half the size of AVGfree8 (+45mb's), which is always a consideration for any dialer-uppers and/or folks with limited free HD space.
I'm mainly interested because AVGfree's forum is prone to answering sincere concerns with matters of protocol . . . and just a week ago, AVG's 7.5 killed a bunch of peoples OnlineArmor Firewall with a false + . . . and they can't accept that AVGfree8 is changing some Windows settings. Just because an issue begin's the second one installs AVGfree8, that doesn't mean AVG had anything to do with it, according to their free moderators. The moderators are much more concerned with "how to ask a question" than with helping anyone's stress levels decline. I'd like to wring "Big Al's" neck!

I won't download from a site that asks me for:

"address as it appears on your credit card statement"

This implies that they will be pestering me for $. No thanks. I get enough spam already.

Thanks for the heads up K8undeadfox. I'm all for trying new products if I think they may be useful; so went ahead and installed this on my gaming rig and was surprised to find several viri. That F-Secure my usual AV hadn’t picked up.

I've been pretty meticulous (or so I thought) at securing all my computers against malware attacks, but my children are increasingly looking to the net for answers and in the case of my 9 year old son I’ve found evidence of visits to sites that deal in cheat codes. I've tried to tell him about the dangers inherent in going to such sites; and have asked him to restrict his searches to one computer that I’ve designated ‘his’ computer. At the moment though he’s been playing a couple of games I have installed on ‘my’ computer and despite installing the same game on his, he still uses mine because he’s designed a lot of new levels (the game – Prof Fizzwizzle and the molten Mystery – comes with an editor). He says he wants to be a games developer and spends a lot of his computer time designing levels for this and other games that have levels editors.

I set the scanner going about 10 am this morning and it’s still going strong at nearly 1pm and it’s yet to scan my G, H and I drives (I’s a removable desktop drive). Of course the time it takes to scan is dependent upon the number of files you have on your computer. I just happen to have hundreds of gigabytes of data on mine (mainly games) – virtually all of the drives are full so I’m going to have to do some house keeping soon.

    Regards

    Stephen

    p.s.

The iolo AV software was actually offered via a computer magazine previously, so K8 may very well have found the developers site through this, there are also thousands of references to this software on the www, so I'm sure there are loads of links that would point to this developer, not just Raymonds. BTW thanks for the link to Raymonds; it looks like quite a useful site to visit occassionally. :)

The system scan finally completed about 7pm this evening that's 7 hours to check about 1 tetrabyte of files. I'll keep this one for awhile to see if it's worth keeping. :) Again, thank's for the heads up. That's what's so cool about these forums. I've bagged some pretty cool stuff thank to community members posting details here.

Robert..........yep your correct System Mechanic had the Kaspersky engine all with IOLO Labs, i used it some years ago and found it " very good " i did have a problem when uninstalling perhaps because files were headed System Mechanic/IOLO Labs/Kaspersky,
Add and Remove failed to uninstall it, as did Brute Force Uninstaller, in the end i used JV16 Powertools last freeware version, plus visited regedit to delete the remainder, not a place for the inexperienced and even touchy for the advanced.

I installed this AV program on Wednesday and since completing the scan (which took over 9 hours to complete a full system scan) I've had nothing but trouble with my system. The blue screen of death (BSoD) has been a reoccurring problem. It’s taken me several attempts to get the computer working each time I’ve booted it up. I made notes on what programs were causing problems whenever the system was rebooted while windows went through the usual repair cycle following the computer being shut down improperly.

The main culprit was a file called css-dvp.sys, which after some research I found belongs to Authentium and is used in Iolo's AV program. It seems others have been having problems with this file as well:

    http://search.msn.co.uk/results.aspx?q=css-dvp.sys&go=&form=QBRE

There were several other references to problems with this AV program during the repair cycle, but I didn't make a note of them.

There's no uninstall facility with this program. If you wish to uninstall it you will first need to go into the task manager and click on the processes tab and then shut down any processes pertaining to this program, (there were at least two processes running) then you can safely delete the program from wherever you installed it to. If you’re not sure which processes to stop, just try and delete the Iolo file and you’ll get a message telling you why you can’t delete it. It is the file that is mentioned in this message that you need to shut down. Keep trying until the Iolo folder deletes fully. The sys file css-dvp.sys will be found in two locations on your computer:

    C:\Windows\System32\drivers

    and

    C:\Program Files\Common Files

I’ve made a back up of the file just in case there is any problems removing it due to finding it in the common files folder as this would indicate that other programs may have been using the file, though this would negate the whole problem, unless the original file was an updated one. Anyway, I’d definitely back up the file just in case. You can rename the file as a safety measure i.e. css-dvp.backup If you’ve installed the AV program to it’s default location you’ll find it by following the path:

    C:\Program Files\Iolo\

Delete the whole folder once you’ve shut down the processes and remove the files from the locations I’ve mentioned above should sort the problem out. (That’s if you’ve been experiencing any BSoD’s). It may be that the file is stable on your computer

Apparently the developer of this file is trying to fix the problem (which has something to do with incompatibilities with the XP kernel), but after all the bother I've had with it over the last few days I think I'll stick to my tried and tested F-Secure. The program has now been deleted, and I've manually removed all traces of it from my registry.

    Stephen,

Did you once have Command Antivirus or PCguard anti-virus installed?

Hi Robert - No I've never used either of those programs.

I've been using F-Secure for the past four years.

I did research the file that was causing the problem and realize that it is used in other AVprograms as well as system mechanic.

Since purging my system of Iolo this morning it's been working well. No BSoD's. I'm sure it was the program, but it may also be a combination of the program and my particular set up; though as I mentioned above, this problem has been reported by others; that is a problem with css-dvp.sys. Once Athentium releases an updated file it may very well mean that the program will work fine, but I'm going to stay with f-secure.

    Hi Stephen

Glad your Windows is back to normal...
Please let us know should Athentium release an update.

Anyone else having troubles with Iolo Antivirus?

I will. I still have the executable and my registration details, so I will be keeping an eye out for an update. Though once bitten ----

    :)

I'm sure if others were having the same problem as I did, it would have been reported here; so I can only assume that may particular set up was party responsible. I do have probles running some games that work perfecly well on my other computers (for example Crysis - despite this computer being my best one in terms of cpu speed, system memory and graphics card.

More bad news from the world of security... AVG downloaded their regular anti-v defs update today, along with a surprise. They slapped a popunder on my monitor warning that AVG8 ($35 annual subscription) will officially replace/obsolete the free AVG7.5 at the end of MAY.

I've fallen behind the info curve on options/alternatives. Any concensus as to the next best free anti-V? Comments welcome.

UPDATE Okay, I'll start by saying I'm now officially bemused. First hit on my google for freebies kicked out a PCMag Ratings Chart... with AVG8 FREE at the top.

Apparently, they hope the existing captive audience will buy without jumping ship to a competitor, but there IS indeed a freebie version! Check out the May 2nd review of AVG8 FREE that includes valuable guidance should the install not go smoothly. Here's a brief excerpt-

Grisoft recently changed its company name to AVG Technologies in recognition of the popularity enjoyed by its free AVG antivirus. AVG Anti-Virus Free 8.0 is an especially significant new release because it integrates full-powered spyware protection and adds AVG's new LinkScanner Web-protection technology. This version is free for noncommercial home use only. It doesn't include any support from AVG, but if you run into trouble, you can get help from other users in AVG's discussion forums.

Another find worth mentioning is this twist on reviews... a comprehensive review of reviewers. Antivirus Software Reviews Reviewed
