Moderation AKA Outright deletion of all comments made by me

So why doesn't a single comment from me survive moderation?

I'm polite, on-topic, no spam or links or anything like that.

In this last one I just pointed out that todays giveaway has been on the publishers site for a while, so there was so reason to call a comment about vista bugs a lie just because it was posted 2 minutes after the giveaway went live.

Did I do something wrong or what?

I am assuming that this site has a refresh type cycle?

Sometimes when I post, my comments are not there awaiting moderation. I just chalk it up to a server glitch!

I do believe I saw your post, but I run XP, seeing Vista makes me buggy, lol!

I don't think it is a personal issue, there are just a heck of allot of comments coming in at that time.

Well, my post showed up as awaiting moderation, only never to be seen again.

Just feels funny with it happening with every comment past a certain date.

  5. Do you have a copy of the comment from today that I could read - perhaps I can suggest why it didn't appear (no promises though). Also it would help if as well as the message - you could provide the name you posted under and the time reported on the post.

It isn't just being offensive, or spam or links etc that will cause your comment not to appear - sometimes users just post stuff that fits inside the above criteria, but still isn't appropriate for the "comment on the product" guidelines that are required.

  6. Well No1, if it's a comment on the front page it gets checked first.

I have had comments not passed.

Hopefully that will answer your rant.

I don't moderate front page either, thats admin or owners permissions.

@Lee: is this a rant? I really am terrible sorry if I offended you, please ignore this user to save you mental distress.

@BuBBY, no I do not have a copy of the comment I posted, but it was basically what I repeated in my OP. An explanation why poster #14 Catty Childs shouldn't call people liars just because they have prior experience with a product. I posted under this name ("No1").

    Rumor #1

Just two minutes this software showed up, and you told us Bugs with Vista, Have you download this software for 20 minutes and test it for several minutes?

Shame deals Steven you said your word.

We need more fair and true comment here.

I too have noticed that some of my comments never made it past Moderator review in the giveaway section of the website but just assumed that it was a website posting issue since some comments did make it, or that they were moved to this forum under a different section since they were program install comments.

Bottom line sounds like it's probably not specific to any one of us and just a queueing issue with the website softwaretrying to handle concurent posts

  9. There are lots of types of comments (front page) that experience has shown are candidates to be killed.
Comments not directly related to the giveaway software - such as

    - Requests for future giveaways
    - Questioning/Disputing Voting
    - Moronic "I'm first" posts
    - Personal or contact (eg. email) details
    - Attacking other people
    - Unsupported arguments against others comments.
    - Asking questions that have already been answered
    - Posting a comment multiple times
    - Asking how to unzip/activate/use a mouse
    - Posting or asking for serial/activation codes
    - Some posts identified as spam by the spam filter
    - Offensive, Abusive, Trolling, Spam
    - Obvious self promotion (Buy my program, visit my blog, click my link etc)
    - Blatantly incorrect or misleading comments
    - Inappropriate or unsafe links.

There are probably more types of comments that get moderated - but at this time of the day that is all I can think of. If you cannot understand what is meant by any of these - just say so, and I will try to fabricate an example.

I've always moderated based on post content before looking at who the poster was. A lot of the time I know who the regular posters are, just by their posting style and tone. I will still try to read each post/comment while I am moderating (There are others who moderate the comments also - more often than myself).

Some comments/posts might slip through if there are a lot to moderate and we are tired, pressed for time or we have lots to read.

Sending a message via the contact form to the GOTD Team include a copy of the comment (and the URL if you know it) - and what you think is wrong with the comment.

.. or you can PM me (it might be a few hours before I get to it if I am away).

I would suggest a better way than posting this 2 minutes after the giveaway starts and having people get the wrong idea - actually mention in your post:

"When trialling version 2.01 of this software in January of this year, I found there were a few issues when running under Vista. These were:
    a) blah blah blah crash
    b) blah blah freeze
    c) blah blah blah graphic glitches

So if you are using Vista, keep this in mind.

Apart from these issues, I found it to be a great little program

As you can see - by mentioning that although posting early (explaining why you haven't downloaded and tested it yet) you have used the software before - you have had "problems" on Vista. To help out the Vista users you explain what those problems were (also Vista users won't think these "problems" are just coming from someone who is bashing Vista). Finally give your recommendation.

Sometimes not being in a rush to post, and thinking about how others might read your comments can clear up problems down the track.

Yes, there are better ways to make the initial post, but it was made by steven it seems, not me.

I still did not see any reason to attack someone based solely on the 2 minute timestamp and a lack of details. There seemed no good reason for it and yet people seemed to have rated it up and the original comment down, so I thought I would offer another (more logical IMHO) point of view.

    Hi

    Let's put it another way.
BuBBy is likely to receive and moderate a lot of comments each day.
Sometimes a message disappears(that happens to all of us)and at another time of that day a bad comment slips through...

Or the server may have been (too) busy at that particular moment.

    Posted 4 months ago #
  13. Actually TBH I haven't been doing a great deal of moderating - been working on a few other projects that are sucking up my free time. Occasionally it's been more putting out fires where a "questionable comment" gets through - and I start reading through the following - and a mini flame war has started. People have forgotten that they are supposed to be commenting on the program. Instead people are criticising spelling, rubbishing other peoples nationalities, ridiculing peoples "choice" of Windows version - stupid stuff like that. And when those "useful" comments are removed or edited people then want to throw rotten fruit at the moderators.

The forums can be a much more sane (and at times, fun) place to have a reasoned discussion or ask a question.

  15. I have to say that I find the moderator '****'ing out words like 'idiots' to be somewhat annoying. Especially when apparently 'morons' is just fine (and appeared a couple of posts above the one of mine that was cut). I only object mildly to the actual censorship; it's the fact that people think I was swearing that I really object to when when in fact I was merely being insulting.

(If the key words are censored in this post too, it'll be somewhat difficult to follow!)

    Posted 4 months ago #
  16. Well it usually takes too much effort and time to censor with *** (and people are far too good at playing wheel of fortune - for it to be of any point. If the post is actually offensive, insulting or abusive - It is far easier to just delete the entire post (and possibly just ban the user from the forums, outright).

Well, speaking of offensive, insulting and abusive posts, they seem to be rather frequent. I hate seeing people refer to other users as "morons". I think that word is unforgivable.

I also hate seeing so much xenophobic stuff - it's very offensive and totally irrelevant. So honestly, if you wanted to go a bit heavier on the moderation, I wouldn't mind at all.

BuBBy, p-p-p-pulease lemme respond!!!!! I haven't used the M-word in a while, especially to label one of those hypersensitive PC speech policey furriner*-lovers. :-)

I've lived all over the world, but never in the USA, and whatever you're burbling on about is lost on me. Although you're obviously trying very hard to offend. Sad.

Actually, Steph, I'm trying hard NOT to offend... but some folk make it so darned INVITING, especially when they feel a need to announce how offensive this or that is while proudly displaying passports and vaccination papers and whistling Kumbaya.

BuBBYCo does a yeoman's job of enforcing TOS with a whip and eraser, but IMHO, keeping a leash on those who would vote for more censorship is just as important.

BTW- We have a special thread dedicated just to highlighting the M's from Crazy Comment Theatre. Maybe to assuage the sensitivities of the PC crowd, "STUPIDEST" substitutes for the M word, but I think it's implied.

BTW2- Some of my favoritest posters are furriners. I luv 'em to pieces. (you know who you are, don't make me embarrass you in public.) If I also spoof a furrin M who's making a fool of him/herself, does that make me xenophobic, or just intolerant of ignorance?

I've been to Canadia (Yes, I misspelled it on purpose). I think wanting to go back would be like wanting to go back to the dentist for another root canal.....without novacaine.

Speaking of which, do the dentists up there even USE novacaine? I would imagine everyone's gums are already so frozen that they can't feel a thing anyway. MwaHaHaHaHa!

graylox- i did not need to know about all the critters i share my home with!

mango-mama- rune was referring to the "m" word which people are finding so offensive.

personally i am not a fan of those kind of words myself. having a 3year old, those kind of words are worse than the usual swear words. although i was not too pleased when my "little angel" used the word frickin' to me...........where could she have learned such frickin' language? i've been restraining myself.
