  1. Thanks for thinking of me, Maizey. While not really into random push photo galleries, I much preferred Astronaut's approach. FlickrTime just couldn't deliver on its promise to limit searches... maybe because people don't fully grasp the "tags" concept.

FWIW, I used Waterfalls and Moss as search tags. While FlickrTime sent me some photos of waterfalls, it also kicked out a lightbulb, 5 identical headshots of someone sucking a lollipop, the Woolworth Bldg in NYC, a stunning nude, and this, um, eyeopener.

The next time the "random" mood strikes you, may I suggest an idle time questing "game" I started for myself years ago. Pick a word, any word, noun, verb, adjective - fractal, dreamcatcher, melancholy, escher, purple, legs, cloud, angry, cube, prism, tattoo, butterfly, waterfall, vortex, ocean... whatever, and then Google Image it. Stumbling down unexpected tangents and wandering through sites I might never have had reason to visit simply because an image looks intriguing (or totally out of context to the word searched) provides a neverending source of entertainment and education.

RM, you may be right about people mot grasping tags. I for one put some unusual tags on one forum topic here just so I could find it again.

Your "Google game" reminds me of a game I saw on Tangler.com. It's been inactive since 7/07 but looks like it could have been fun. The Google Picture Game!

  3. Well, there you go. Nothing new under the sun... or great minds think alike? I can hazard a guess why it's inactive. It forces itself to stay on top of all my other browser windows until it finishes loading all the images! (never seen that since I barred pop ups) Can you imagine it running as long as your What Is It thread? 1000+ photos might crash some computers.

FWIW, way back when Google first launched, I know I was the first (or second or at least eleventy-ninth) to try to pick words that would only generate one result. Way later, I read that it was a popular past-time for other inquiring/bored minds! Same with the phrase "stumbled upon"... I am absolutely certain I was first (or not) to tie it to finding interesting Google results. I just didn't think to snag the phrase as a domain name!

I didn't notice the thing with it loading all of the pictures. But I didn't try to switch tabs while it was loading. Maybe they should have limited the image size of the submissions.

If you'd have registered that domain name you'd be too high-hatted to mingle with the likes of us. Sorry for you but happy for me! :)

  5. Awwww, that's sweet, Maize. Never one to get too high-hatted (always wear 'em low over my eyes), I promise that no matter how famous or rich I get, I'll always be just as condescending to the little people I stepped on to reach the top. :-)

RM, have you taken the"awareness test" over on the giggle thread? Just curious...

    Posted 8 months ago #
  7. Yes, I did. Not sure why the creator didn't see the bear. I'll admit it distracted me... I counted 14 of the 13 passes! And, I didn't realize it was a bear until he asked. I just thought it was a really ugly gangbanger.

To keep Funky's ladies club thread alive, I'm about to post a video you'll probably like, though not for the same reason I did!

  14. Maizey, wish I had time to delve into my 10-year collection of nature photo FAVsites right now. IMHO, NATURE Gallerias deserves its own separate thread, to differentiate from PETS, Cultural Geography, and other distractions. I canceled Natl. Geog. because there was IMHO too much cultural stuff, not enough about the natural world. Canceled Scientific American when I realized all the wondrous technologies had advanced so far past my ken that it'd become gibberish to Ooog the Caveman of the 20th century! :-(

  15. NATURE Gallerias deserves its own separate thread
    Yes ! Let's begin.
Hey, caveman, in the today-world it is nearly impossible to differentiate between "pure" nature and landscapes with cultural traces. A lot of amazing landscapes which are worthy of protection are in fact man-made for some time ago, e.g. heathland or antique irrigation systems, those magnificent megalith buildings...
All that had become a "natural" part of our landscapes.
BTW, most "people" are natural made too ;-)
But dancing pets and chinese circus are another part of amazing things.

So you all want to start a new NATURE Gallerias thread? Who wants to start? Rune? Graylox? Do you think we should repost the ones in this thread? Please start ASAP because I have some more! :)

  17. Okey Dokie, Dazeymaizey, I'll do it. Am on a conference call break, no time to put anything in it right now. Add my Yes vote for transferring your excellent real natural nature & wildlife sites to it!

Today is A Holy Day for Half the World. Good Friday! Happy Purim, Eid, etc...
Friday, March 21st is Good Friday for Christians, but it’s also a sacred date for many other religions. People are celebrating Good Friday, Purim, Narouz, Eid Milad an Nabi, Small Holi, and Magha Puja. That doesn’t happen often.

Ed Reingold and Nachum Dershowitz, co-authors of the books Calendrical Calculations and Calendrical Tabulations, determined how often in the period between 1600 and 2400 A.D. Good Friday, Purim, Narouz and the Eid would occur in the same week. The answer is nine times in 800 years. Then they tackled the odds that they would converge on a two-day period. And the total is … only once: today. And that’s not even counting Magha Puja and Small Holi.

  22. Is it true that in their next book, they're devoting a chapter to examining the probability of half the world's population sneezing simultaneously in the same direction and causing the earth's rotation to slow down? :D

Rune, please refer to these formulas to determine the results:

You should know all of these cold.

Definition of probability when all outcomes are equally likely:

p = (count of desired outcomes) ÷ (count of possible outcomes)

    The rule for complementary events:

    P(not A) = 1 – P(A)

The special addition rule, for mutually exclusive events only:

    P(A or B) = P(A) + P(B)

The special multiplication rule, for independent events only:

    P(A and B) = P(A) × P(B)

  24. "You should know all of these cold."

Oh, yeah, you betcha! Talk about being whipsawed... your opinion went from me being a lowbrow/monobrow caveman to a master of algebraic formulae in a matter of minutes. Nearly 40 YEARS ago I took one semester (maybe 2??) of statistics, realized the math side wasn't any funner than it had been in high school. Don't count on me successfully proving that all those equations simply generate a big zero.

Rune, obviously I was mistaken. Even your vocabulary is suffering from the thoughts of probability analysis. It's back to caveman for you! :-D

  27. Oh, Maize, typos I readily own up to and then quickly blame on lack of sleep, no coffee or the dog eating my homework.
OTOH, I've been known to inject a bit of nonstandard patois as a way to break the monotony way up here in my redneck treehouse. Fer instance, sez, wuz, danged and ain't come to mind. Funner was just the idiolect du jour. Now, check your admiral seeds, woman!

RM, I love the JibJab flick! I've been a member at JibJab for sometime now. It was disappointing when they started "charging" to send their customizable movies. They still throw in a couple of free ones. I like to insert friends and relatives faces into them and send them off for a good laugh every now and then!
