Not a paw paw tree or a dogwood (although I could take a pix of a dogwood blossoms except they're all gone now), it is a fruit blossom, and that dog needs it's toe nails clipped!

Funky, thanks for the PRIZES! (Ha, Ha, I got 2) I really like spot the difference games.

Copmom, I agree with Graylox. It looks like blueberries or huckleberries to me, too. As a matter of fact, I looked through my photos trying to find one that I'd taken to compare. Never did find it. Is it a tree or a shrub?

graylox.. you've got it!!!!!!!!!! Ta daaaaaaaaa! The blueberries are just starting to flower. We've got 8 bushes of them. Now to see if I actually get any this year. Usually the birds get them before they turn purple! Tried putting a net over the bushes one year, so what did the birds do? Walked under the netting! Guess I'll just buy some at the grocery store like I usually do.

not enough detail for me to tell about the blossoms (aside from appearing to rule out cherry, plum, apple, etc.- the wide, flat, well-defined petal types), but the leaves seem familiar. narrow, paired, too green, not blue enough for eucalyptus IIRC, not dusky enough for olive (alas, california and oregon are the extent of my travels)... almond, perhaps?

Fothergilla(Witch alder)bush? -Aint a "tree" if it' s under 15 feet tall(ok 12 feet)! And I agree detail is tough.

    I don't think it's height that makes a tree.

"To most people, a tree is something living longer than a year and has the general shape of a single thick stem with leaves or branches with leaves."

"For specialists who work with plants, a tree is defined more specifically.

In addition to the general definition is the specific requirement that there is growth in the diameter of the single thick stem (technically called wood formation)."

the japanese maple down at our civic center is certainly a tree (specifically, Acer palmatum var. dissectum 'Crimson Queen', or Cutleaf Japanese Maple) but as yet is under 6 feet tall and usually stays under 10 feet.

Yes, but those are specifically dwarfed. Landscaper specialist enough?

sure, that's cred enough for me- but then, I was quoting a general rule. are you saying this species has been bred dwarfed? I know the groundskeepers haven't a clue.

if you look hard enough you can find rule-breakers in every class. I'm a generalist (jack of all trades) and that's about the one constant I've learned.

besides, a dwarf tree is still a tree, right?

love to get you to look over some of the puzzlers I've found right here in town- like this most definite tree: 5 broad leaflets, c. 35' tall... drain, oregon.

Is it only me, or has this thread (and the entire forums, for that matter) gone wild? I'm having a hard time following what's going on. For instance, I think Paulga wants someone to guess what's in his jar. Now, copmom has another tree/shrub to identify. With the last shrub, I thought it was something that she needed help identifying. You know, something like the stuff that Goody posts... a little side conversation. I'm not sure anymore.

The original concept of this game thread was to post a closeup or enlargement of a section of something bigger. Then later, after some confusion, we decided on a naming convention that would include a shortened ID of the poster and a sequential number for their submissions. (i.e. CM-100 for copmom's 100th What Is It submission.)

So, what do you say folks? Should we start new threads called "What's In My Jar?" and "What Am I Growing?"??? Or, should we go back to the original, semi-orderly, "What Is It" format??? Please, convey your thoughts here.

Ya, if u admit it' s a general rule I' ll admit it' s too early to put the : ) after the witch hazel family I was referring to (sloppy growing,multiple-stemmed -even at ground level "flexible scented shrub"). Since there' s no GOTD today : ( I' ll go trim my bonsai shrub (ooops)and be back tomoro.

If nobody whacks me for it, I'd go for a separate thread for 'anybody got a clue?' and go back to showing stuff we know the name of for guessing here.

heck, the 'I don't care' thread is too much like jeopardy for me- all answers have to be phrased as questions, and such.

as for the jar, better lighting would help- could be anything from used motor oil to magnetite sand.

no need to run off, goldeneagle- no offense meant.

and yes, 'gone wild' isn't a bad term (check out the movie 'world gone wild', you get a chance) but 'splintered' might be better.

maizeydaze........yep! you are correct in saying the thread has branched out/off in various directions? and as a result ,confusion has set in! so i will start the "clean up", by exposing myself!.........well i mean the "what is it.....thats in the jar, light was dimmed so you HAD to guess, so now to kill it, http://www.divshare.com/download/4559342-d06

paulga.. "exposing yourself".. are you exposing your hand? Who's hand is that and why is it in a jar? Are you collecting body parts to make a new Frankenstein?
goody, is not a fruit tree.
OK maizey.. I'll rephrase mine to say, "What did I grow"?

Dearest copmom, That's not what I really suggested. What I'm getting at is the "What Is It?" game should be for pictures of closeups of larger objects to guess. The "What's this plant ID?" should probably be given it's own thread. There does seem to be a lot of interest in this topic! Why don't YOU start this new and exciting thread? I'll play!! :)

This sure would bring a little bit of organization to the chaos! Does this make sense or am I being too fussy? Please, don't take offense. It's nothing personal. I'm just having a difficult time following a given theme. :)

maizey.. no, you're not being fussy, and NO offense at all! Truthfully, I've gotten totally confused on what to post where with all these threads and following who said what. I guess I started because of that closeup of that tulip poplar flower, and then got off the track.
Yes, the original concept of a close up seems to have gotten pushed to the back burner, so next post I'll make a new thread.
