I am currently having vista home premium, and while the icons there are good, i would like to replace some of them and those for some software apps. that i have installed, with icons that i found from the net.

anyone of you having suggestions for a good freeware , that does that?
    thanks!

    Hi Ender,
Sorry, I know how to do it in XP without any additional s/w, but I know nothing about Vista. I'm sure one of the gurus will come by soon.
I've already changed almost all of my yellow file folders and programs folders w Icons.
Much much easier to find stuff you are looking for! And of course much prettier!!
Did u get the Icon Organizer & Icon Constructor offered last week? Those are fun!!! :-)

    On the subject of Icons:
I'm looking for a freeware Icon extractor (for XP) that does the job right.
Yes indeed, I confess: I've become addicted to Icons. Really don't know why I find it interesting to have such a huge collection, but I like having them, and still, it seems I don't have quite the ones I need... Old age makes u go gaga for silly stuff, I guess!
    Peace, Manu

    Na Nu Na Nu LeKanaw!!
The forum has been a little boring without you. I to like Icons, haven't tried the Icon Constructor yet,I've been busy trying to organize all the games and s/w that I've d/l over the past weeks.
The Icon extractor you talk about, exactly what will it allow you to do if you find one.
It seems I can never find the right Icon to use for what I want.
Let's have a glass of Mango Juice.

P.S.Is there a site that explaines the meaning of the Icons that come with Win/XP.

Hi, Manu LeKanaw try this extractor tool, it's without whistles and bells, and without install.
Some other useful tools at this site too.

Hellooooo my prankster partner, how are u???
    Happy 2c u are around :-)
Yeah, of course it has not been as much fun lately - bc her Royal Clowness wasn't around to spread the silliness!! HeeHee!

Have u been spying on me? Who gave u my home address? What spy agency are u in cahootes with?? U.NC.L.E.???

Well, guess what I've been doing?? Exactly the same as you!! Na Nu Na Nu!!! 8-@
Organizing the s/w & games, taking notes, adding a bunch of folders in my BM organizer. Have been completing my Writely files where I put all my notes/Reg.#/C° links/tutorial links/reviews/ etc,etc...
Hey, it's hard work!! More than ½ of the s/w I have isn't in use yet, just laying around waiting for me to learn what to do w it all.

    Anyway, about the Icons:
1-I want an extractor to get the icons the companies don't give us. For example, IconConstructor3 or DownloadHelper have nice icons, but I've been unable to get them. I want to apply them to their BM folders or the files. I'm a visual person, so all my folders/files have the corresponding icon. I don't understand why some companies make it soooo hard to use them.

2-Now, the IC3 is a nice thingy. I've been able to convert some GIFs & PNGs into .ico format. Made quite a few nice ones.
But it has a limited range. Only 16x16, 32x32, 48x48. The 16s and 32s are unusable, way too tiny. And sometimes even the 48s are too small.
But hey, better then the 'nothing' I had b4, right?

At last count I had ~a few thousands in my folder, but overall really NOT many .ico, and the majority already have their own s/w assigned to it. So most of them are unusable :-( It's hard to find the "right" one, and I never use the same twice, otherwise it would defeat the purpose of recognizing each folder/file.

3-I don't understand ur question in the "PS". What do u want to know?
    Peace, Manu

    Hi Graylox :-)
Thank You VERY MUCH, I'll check it out indeed.
I'll let u know what comes of it.

Are u a crazy Icon collector too? ;)
Remember when we were young, ppl collected stamps?? Well, new Century so I guess new collections. I can't look at a GG search without snatching a few, just in case I'll need them "later"... Now have a lot, but few of what I really need! Duhh...

Good Day or Good Night to you

If you'd like to replace the icons that come with programs, Hoolicon is a very good utility to use. It used to be a 'pay' program, but has recently been changed to be freeware. It does many things, icon related, on many different file types. Part of their description is:

"Hoolicon replaces the standard icon of a Adobe/Macromedia Flash, Director or Authorware projector into one that you choose yourself. Give your (CD-ROM) projects a more personal & professional touch!

It consist of an easy-to-use wizard interface, which makes the replacement of an icon a breeze.

In fact, almost any executable file's icon can be altered with the help of Hoolicon."

Might be something that is of use to you.....

thanks a lot for all suggestions, expecially to FreewareFan, i think, i will wait for icontweaker to be vista ready, as i have vista.

I am not looking for an all inclusive program, as i dont want to create my own icons, nor do i want to extract them from somewhere.
I just found a set of really pretty icons, and i wanted to replace some windows icons, plus some of the software icons on my computer.

i am not collector of icons.
i just want to replace roughly about 20 or 30 icons.

hoolicon also looks very good, i will test if it works on vista.
