Offensive Add

(49 posts)

  1. BuBBy you are right, the original poster's words are polite and unoffensive, but the meaning is - in my ears - offensive; perhaps, because I connect those harmless words to a
growing threatening danger for democratic values, not only in America. Democracy is not linked to only one Nation. Like Tripphammer said :
we have to put up with others who have the right to think and say any way they want, but they have to do the same.
Maybe the diction in the 2. post is intense, but I read in it the expression of growing anger against censorship and moral cowardice.
As a German European I can not speak for "the land of the free" if this only means the USA, but I'll never forget Who brought democracy to my land.

  2. sorry, for my fit of rage, but just this picture inflamed the same discussion in my country, for some years ago, and I had bad memories of this time.

  3. graylox, I understand you perfectly and I agree.

However, on a forum, message board, or in a chat room it is different. The OWNER makes the rules. As some of you know, I ran a chat room for 10 years. In RL I am all for freedom of speech but not in my chat room. No politics or religion chats at all. You know why? Because someone always gets mad and it causes problems/fights. Then I had kids on there so no sex talk..etc. It was always keep it clean.

I explained it this way to my people this way. This channel is like my home. What I say goes. You are a visitor in my house. Please respect my rules. If you don't like them..there is the door. Make your own channel or join a channel more to your liking. There are tons of political, religious and sex channels out there. Pick one.

graylox, IMHO, there's absolutely no need for you to apologize for your post or your typing. The land of the free sold out to liberal and conservative special interest groups years ago, so we're a lot less free these days, though the overly sensitive and polarized are extremely well protected from nasty emotional trauma. You can spot them all bundled up and cushioned within the flag that used to wave freely.

  5. Delenn, I agree 100 % with you. I did it the same way in my RL seminars, but such rules apply to all posters, to the 1. too.

Delenn has a valid point. Moderated forums do need to constantly be on the lookout for brush fires. There are different techniques to quench them, including just letting them burn out on their own. I've launched and moderated a few, not nearly to the extent Delenn's done. The healthiest and most civil forums enforce a TOS, but also maintain a tight rein on membership. There really are no controls on posts or posters here save for the dreaded BubbyCo Purge. There's no invited members program to access a restricted forum (not that I'm suggesting or even hoping those things be implemented), but also no way to rate member posts. (peer pressure works, at least to some extent)

Ah well, the Super Bowl's over... time for some motion picture entertainment... after a NEW HouseMD, that is.

when i read the original post, i immediately went looking for this "offensive add"....and found it. i didn't have time to respond. now, i come back, and this thread has exploded. and not one of you has seen the add(sic). so, being the ever-helpful person that i am, went looking for the add(sic) again.....and found it right on the gaotd page. and now, being the ever-helpful person that i am, i will let you all judge for yourselves:

    http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n113/funkymom/imgad.jpg

i hope i'm not offending anyone by posting this link, but i figure if the site administrator is willing to show the add(sic), it shouldn't be a problem.

personally, i think that if the op isn't a troll (great term, btw), he/she is someone who is very easily offended and must have a very difficult time living in this world, because i'm assuming (i know i know) that if they are online and/or are living anywhere even remotely "modern" (for lack of a better word) they are bombarded with much worse on an hourly basis.

how's that for a run on sentence? (if i'm not the champ, i'm definitely a contender)

Uhhh.. no bellybutton, and one can only assume it's of the female gender.

I call it oversensitive at least, and troll reasonable- unless following the link found more evidence for offense.

nothing blocked on the page by my router's firewall, and even IE doesn't show it- strange.

Nope, a bit obnoxious, but otherwise mild and tough to get worked up about. IMHO.

Thanks for the link. Even the pseudo-see-through is male. girl with tape measure, back turned? naah.

What I don't understand is why everybody thinks that she's on a diet. The ad makes it clear that she got her colon flushed out.

Actually, the mental image that it brings up is pretty offensive itself. At the very least, it's pretty gross.

    >runesagemagik(just noticed)

"The land of the free sold out to liberal and conservative special interest groups years ago, so we're a lot less free these days, though the overly sensitive and polarized are extremely well protected from nasty emotional trauma."

Actually, it's the other way around. The "special interest groups"(read: the ACLU) actively promote offensive and criminal stuff like child pornography and mandatory "sex education"(read: showing eight-year-olds how to use a condom), but a simple "Merry Christmas" is considered "hate speech". I'd recommend reading The ACLU vs. America to clarify my point.

Now, I have run this thread into the ground with my politically-charged post! Muahahaha!

Hey, if funkymom can post off-topic, so can I.

  13. I knew there was a reason to get my little blackberry pearl! I'm 550 miles from home and still love coming here to see what's happening.

First off why would anyone want to complain about an add here in the forum? I to don't like censorship either but does anyone other than the member starting this thread find anything wrong with it?

Isn't it bad that someone loves this place and members so much that they will come here even when there away on business? LOL wished I was home to download todays software giveaway.

lockett- i am not going to let this get too political. let's just say i don't agree with you.

everyone please don't let this thread turn from a funny/weird mystery into a heated political, right wing vs. left wing debate!
that will be a sure way to get it deleted, and i find it pretty entertaining and educational (trolls, anyone?)

i have no problem with you being off-topic. in fact i don't really think it's off topic, there was plenty of fuel for this particular fire.

    please let it end here.

Funky, was that add(sic) being displayed on GAOTD? If there's a bare midriff within 20 miles of me, my radar usually senses it!! Must be broken. :-)

Lockett, I'm a centrist/independent, and find so much wrong with the ACLU, I wouldn't know where to begin the list. Everyone has a POV, and it seems the younger and more idealistic they are, the more convinced they are that their POV is the "right" one. Only with time do (some) people begin to recognize that extremists are dangerous, but even the contrasting shades of gray that make the world go round can sometimes make it fly off its axis.

But, as HouseMD is over (a great one, as usual) and Funky is wisely championing rationality by pulling the curtain down on this thread, I'll go back to watching my talkies.

PS- I'm happy to see that the wise guys behind the curtain kept your Yahoo Games thread up, Funky!

  16. Well it was never actually about the original post - I wouldn't expect GOTD would redesign their site to change advertising arrangements over something that most consider tame. Still, I do respect the OPs right to say that it offends him/her. It doesn't offend me, or probably anyone else - but if somebody wishes to say seeing a bare midriff is offensive (my bare midriff probably IS offensive... maybe if I waxed... no lets not go there. I need to shake those memories of that waxing scene in "40 Year Old Virgin")

Still if somebody doesn't like it, and wants to say so in a polite manner, that is OK. If somebody registers in the forums just to shout them down and make them feel stupid that is not respecting their feelings. Often it's not what is said that is important, it's how you hold them around the neck and punch their nose in till they get your point.

Posting with the intent to start an online argument, or unprovoked posting with clear and obvious intent using a concealed diatribe of abuse to crush the dignity of another person - is an offence in this 'ere town. (I just hate filling out the paperwork - It should just be called "Being a jerk")

Just gotta be civil, and respect one another. Bein' able to cut someone else down to size doesn't give you a spine. Waiting for them to turn and walk away, and hitting them across the back of the head with a tree branch.... that takes a spine. Not that there is anything wrong with that, mind.

But I've been told that respecting one another is a good thing, especially if you cannot run faster than the other person - getting away in one piece might be a problem. I don't know how that applies to the internet. Maybe that's why there are so many brave people on the internet who can stand tall (on a chair) and attack someone, knowing they can hide in the cupboard under the stairs, and nobody will probably ever come looking in there for them.

Uh oh, looks like that old brush fire in the eucalyptus forest still has some embers glowing. Where's smokey the bear??

IMHO, the whole PC movement has done a lot more wrong than good. Self-esteemism ideas such as gold stars and medals for simply participating in a competitive sport (or eliminating scores so everybody "wins"), the debasing of the word hero to mean anything, even Lockett's point about how PCness is turning any word/phrase/funny joke that happens to rub some sensitive soul the wrong way into hate speech CRIME, it's all bad news for freedom. Some cheer, but many others are sick to death of the downward spiral as PC-lovers cater and pander to anyone with an upset tummy.

I should have been MUCH more specific... bare FEMALE midriffs within 20 miles! BubbyCo, the image you've left in my head (hairy paunch) is enough to make me demand that your post be removed... and replaced with that picture Funky found of the jeans and bare midriff! :-)

  19. I thought I would add.

I answered this thread 3 minutes after it got posted, you don't see what I wrote as I kept getting a 504 error.

I gave the user a contact for owner from front page and explained that most fat fighter type regimes show a woman or a man extending their sweat pants or trouser to show the inches they have lost.
