i want to purchase a new laptop. What is the next step now after the dual core?

  2. the quad core, and after it will be the eight-core and so on :) for the moment i'd recommend buying a dual-core, for the good reason that they currently give you best bang for the buck.

Wouldn't that be the octo-core? Anyway, Intel is already marketing a quad-core Xeon microprocessor, and AMD also has a quad-core model. They're really expensive, though.
