Because GOTD has not put up tutorials or anything that we have advised them in order to help new users, I am gonna tell you how you can STOP having actvation problems.

WHEN YOU INSTALL SOFTWARE, UNCHECK ANY BOX THAT SAYS THE FOLLOWING:

    "Run software now"
    "Read readme.txt"
    "Give feedback on software"
    "Go to website"

If you check any box that sounds like this it will start up the software, and then when you run the activate.exe, it will not activate.

You will need to close the software (check the system tray to see if it's running) and then run activate.exe.

It will activate you just need to exit the program and re-open it for the changes to be recognized. Thanks for posting this!

Hmmm, I guess that reading the "readme.txt" that is included with all the
downloads I have tried would be a good thing? It seems to me that the team DOES include instructions...you just need to READ them.
Most all troubles break down into a couple of simple catagories.
1: The user failed to read the readme file first
2: The user has not followed a proper schedule for critical updates to his/hers system
3: The users connection is not the cleanest, (cafe connections, dial up, ect.) and the download was corrupted.
If you get past those three common errors, then you may have a real issue.
I am always amazed as to why people feel the need to blame others for their own lack of knowledge. I am in NO WAY an expert on the computer, but I have a good connection, an updated system, and I can read instructions. I have never had ANY trouble with ANY of the 50 or so downloads I have tried.

  7. PapaSmurf, you are soooooooooooooooo right!
I have, neither, had any problems with any of the downloads from here.
Even though I use dial-up connection!

And I don't believe it's about the systems updates, either. Because, everything the app needs to be started MUST be installed with the product and not to be supposed that the user will have it on his/her system! Example: If software runs on .Net2 framework it must come with setup and be installed when app is installed. Author must NOT suppose that everyone now has it installed on their machines.

It has more to do with users not reading README.TXT file, before "activating", "installing" and running the software. This is mostly the reason why users get their "TRIAL INFO" in the app. They don't fallow the order.

But we can not rule out that there are software bugs and incompatibility with some other software apps (which the user might have installed) and stuff like that...
And not to be forgotten: Some times you must have Administrators right on your machine! And all of the users have it!

Help please, before the time runs out!

I disabled Norton after getting the Spyware problem, but it wiped something before I caught it. Now I get the message:

An error occurred while copying file
    C:\DOCUME ... \sta.exe to
    C:\Program Files\SmartTypeAssistant\sta.exe

To retry copying press "Retry" But when I do I get:

System error message. This process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.

So I shut down everything and I get the message that SmartTypeAssistant is still run ning - but I've gone to Windows Task Manager and it isn't there.

And when I go to Add/Remove Program - I can't because it says it is running and to close it.

So does anyone know how to shut this thing down so it can be installed with Norton turned off, so I get the piece Norton removed before I could catch it?

I'm sorry this sounds so convoluted, but that's the general idea - Help!! (Only 15 min. left and I really want this program!)

Don't worry Face. As long as you have it activated by the deadline (and it sounds like you did). You should have all of the time in the world to get this Smart Type Assistant to work.

    Thanks Bill

Any help on getting it to run? Or since it thinks it is running, how to find that copy?
When I hit set-up, it opens to the silvery full-page version, but that's where I get the message to "Re-try" (see original post). And when I go through Start, All Programs, Smart..., nothing happens, but according to Task Manager, it is not running. Any thoughts?

Okay for starters, programs listed in the Task Manager can be very cryptic. But I am 99% positive it is listed as STA.exe. As long as you are sure it isn't there, here is what I think is happening. As I believe it reports as in use, as Norton's (or whatever you are using, I'll just call it Norton's for now), is locking the program so you can't use it. Thus it reports a cryptic message it is in use. Norton and others, you can turn them off temporary. And this should allow you to access Smart Type Assistant. Give that a try and report back.
