problem keeping games installed.

For some reason I have not been able to install and play these two games. I used to get a text, activation and then setup. Now I just get the activation looking key to setup and the text. I kept yesterdays game installed to try it out, but because it only had the activation key thing it said it was to late to activate, although I did activate the day it was given. Today's game gives me an error, it says it has a problem and must close.

So the bottom line is I am not getting the setup icon, just the text and activation icon. I have never seen this before. I hope someone could help. I have windows xp.

    Donna, there is no SOP.
Every day, the procedure may vary slightly. (activate then set up, or set up and then activate, or just set up with autoactivate)
The contents of the zip file may vary. (setup.exe and README.txt or setup.exe, README.txt and ACTIVATE.exe)
It is imperative that you open the README file EACH time, and follow the directions to the letter.

Each download has to include a setup.exe, BUT, sometimes it can be misleading in that you'll do the unzip and get a window that says EXTRACT files before running setup. It seems redundant, but you gotta do it and click on the next window's ACTIVATE and SETUP files. You can tell the difference because the extracted files will have colorful icons for ACTIVATE (and maybe for SETUP, I can't recall).

BTW- Your post lacked some critical info that would help narrow down your problem. There is an on-going effort to standardize the Download/Install/HELP with Problems cycle. Towards that end, here's a rough draft of -

    GAOTD INSTALLATION FAQ (patent pending)

Q: Do we really only have 24 hours to download this software?

Yes, Virginia, there is a 24-hour time limit.
Please Note: You MUST download AND install within that period or you will miss out on the offer. Period. Tough noogies and hasta la viesta. 24-hours is carved in stone because of heavily lawyered-up agreements with the generous vendors supplying the freebies.
    Just to repeat... there is:
    >>> no "do over" if you wait until 5 minutes before midnight to start the download with a dial up computer connection;
    >>> no way to save and install later;
    >>> no way to reinstall if your computer crashes and you have to reformat the hard drive;
    >>> no blaming GAOTD if their server goes down, the electricity fails, or terrorists hijack the pumping station;
    >>> no crossing over the International Dateline and asking for immunity;
    >>> no way any regular member is going to send you the secret code because then we will have to shoot them and sell their computers on the black market.

Q: I downloaded but something's gone horribly wrong.

The instructions for downloading and installing are simple, BUT THEY MAY VARY. You really gotta READ the README and follow it step by step.
Sometimes, the zip file will only contain a README.txt and a SETUP.exe.
Sometimes there will be a totally separate ACTIVATE.exe.
Sometimes you have to ACTIVATE before running SETUP.
Sometimes you SETUP and then ACTIVATE.
Sometimes activation is automatic (it checks with GAOTD to make sure you're within that pesky 24-hour time frame); but sometimes you have to physically copy and paste a secret registration name and code.

When you unzip the download, you may see a window stating that it has to extract all the files before proceeding. EXTRACT them! If you don't, something is likely to go horribly wrong.

If you're new to computers, keep the README file open. Not only does that make it simple to follow the 2 or 3 step process in the right order, but having that text file open gives you a handy place to copy and paste the registration info for safe keeping.

During the activation process, sometimes the little activation window pops up UNDER another window. Always look for these things by clicking the Toolbar, clicking SHOW DESKTOP and then reopening one window at a time. Trust that GAOTD doesn't intentionally try to be irritating. Play hide and seek with a smile, if only to keep your blood pressure under control.

Q: I still have a problem. What do I do?

A crack team of unpaid volunteer moderators plus a rapidly mutating roster (rag tag gang) of uncertified/quasi-qualified/eager members stand at the ready to welcome you and answer questions or help with problems. However, they need you to be as specific as possible, starting with your SUBJECT LINE. "HELP" doesn't cut it. Neither does "Couldn't install it!!!"

The helper drones and dronettes aren't mindreaders. They need to know:
1 - The name of the problematic software.
2 - Your OS (operating system) Did you check the vendor's home page for minimum requirements, and if the appl works with your OS?
3 - The EXACT wording of any error message.
4 - As detailed a description of the steps you took during the install process.

Before asking for assistance, you might want to try clearing your temporary cache, and uninstalling the new program if it's running but not working right. (Don't delete the original zipped download that you wisely saved in a special folder created especially for GAOTD downloads)

Then try rebooting, and reinstalling, always following the README file step by step. If nothing else, by taking notes and copying the exact error message, you may be able to demonstrate a replicable problem that can be solved by the aforementioned team or by the software vendor, thus saving many others heartache and frustration.

  3. Hi RunesageMagik; Love your take on FAQ! A little humour goes a long way to knocking sense into some people. I've only been downloading from the site since June'07 but I've learned a lot from reading the posts and more recently the forums. I'm still fairly new to computers as I only got this one in October'06. It is a WinXPpro/sp2 with a 20gig hard drive and only 256mb ram. I'm saving up to buy a backup drive and more ram but that may take a few months.

    In your comments you said:

Before asking for assistance, you might want to try clearing your temporary
cache, and uninstalling the new program if it's running but not working
right.(Don't delete the original zipped download that you wisely saved in a
special folder created especially for GAOTD downloads)

Okay, I have wisely saved the zip file in my GAOTD folder, extracted the files, and succesfully activated and installed a fully functioning game. Having done all that, is it necesary to still keep the zip file or can I safely delete it and free up a little space on the hard drive?

  4. Two other regular things - Activation can't connect - check the IE "work offline" isn't ticked. Even though you use Firefox for a browser - it seems like the Activate.exe / Setup.exe processes from GOTD still use the Internet Explorer program to connect.

And one more - the "bad key" or "invalid key" (I've seen it enough - I should know if off by heart now) - check in the Internet connection settings that you internet isn't passing through some sort of proxy or filtering server/program. Don't specify a proxy configuration if possible - just try to connect direct to the internet (even if it is just for 2 minutes while you activate the program).

If we can get people understanding those two points we could probably clear up 20% of the "can't activate" support. The next 79% just falls down to reading and following the supplied instructions. And the remaining 1% are GOTD Server stuff ups.

Ah - a bonus one before I forget:

The giveaway has expired - when there is still 15 hours left (according to the website counter). Each giveaway has a magic "key" - When GOTD try to fix up a problem and put together a new download for the existing giveaway - they assign a different key - which means the old giveaway doesn't work. Due to a lack of useful error messages - instead of saying "This giveaway has been updated/fixed - please try to redownload" they just say "Giveaway has expired". Then the confused user - posts comments or comes to the forum wanting to know how it can have expired if it still has 15 hours left - and leaves in a storm muttering something about "GOTD and bloody scams."

    So

Failed to Connect - Check IE "Work Offline" isn't checked.
Can't connect or try again later - It is busy - give it 10 minutes and try again.
Bad/Incorrect/Invalid Key - Check for proxy settings or internet filtering (antivirus?)
Giveaway has expired - If it hasn't "expired" - perhaps you have an old version of the giveaway.

If we can keep this going - I might draft up something official - and sticky it where users can go before asking the "new" and "never before experienced" problems, that I especially enjoy solving.

DNS, after installation, my SOP is to retain all zip files except for GAOTD's. (you're right, because of the narrow install window) Over the years, there's been just enough instances to justify it -
when a file's been corrupted or I delete a program and then have second thoughts, only to find that the "newer" version wasn't compatible with my "older" system.

Until DSL arrived, there was also the pain-in-the-derrière (err I mean download) nuisance. Hated downloading everything, especially twice! However, I slipped in that comment about keeping the zips mostly because several other members' download dilemmas were fresh in my mind. One ran out of time because she was downloading too close to the 24-hour cutoff and the download broke (wasn't using a d/l manager) and another had an ISP with a bandwidth limitation, meaning downloading huge files quickly ate up his monthly limit. The old carpenter's "measure twice, cut once" saying applies in reverse... "download once, install twice"

Thanks for catching it, though. The final version will likely explain that you can indeed delete zips once something is up and running. One value to these boards is to compare my SOP's to those other folk developed for their own PCs. FWIW, in the zip file's folder, I also keep shortcuts to the developer's homepage, the GAOTD comment page for that software, and even links to forums I find that deal with a particular program.
That's why I asked Bubby if he knew of a free link verifier that could scan my whole PC as opposed to just the "favorites" file... I gots links coming outta my ears, some older than certain posters on this board! :-)

I know I'm veering off the thread's topic for a moment, it's just I really have NO idea where else I could post this. Hope it's not a major faux pas, punishable by lightning strikes...
    =*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*
Helloooo my Winterpegger!!! Wow, this is a new word for me, but goes well w ur kind of Winter ;-)
Nonetheless, 'round these parts we have been having tooooo much of the white stuff too! 4 storms in a row b4 Xmas w a few meters of it, freezing rain off & on since, had roof problems bc of the ice, way toooo heavy for the roof, hubby got sick braking it, shoving it off. You know, the normal "joys" of Winter!! 8-@ *sigh*

Huhmmm, did u say "floppy"? As in disquette? Ohhhh boy... But u do have a CD tray, right? Otherwise how did u transfered the 300CDs into ur PC? Me confused!!

Anyway, no worries, I might have a solution, have a couple of ideas :-D
1-With our older PCs, we used to use a Iomega ZipDrive. At the time, the darn critters were expensive as were the zips. As of now we don't have any use for it, have USBs and externals to transport and bkups. So, it has been collecting dust for the past ~2years. I could send it to u, if u find it useful. Better than lying around in a drawer, right? Pass it forward is my motto in life!
It's easy to use. Don't know how many blank zips we still have, if none, I'll empty out a few and send the whole thing. It's only a temporary solution, but at least it could help u out till u get either a newer computer or a big external. And u have to start thinking about back-ups, b4 u lose the whole HD!!! As they say, it's not *IF*, it's *WHEN*!

Have to wait till later tonite to give u all the details(model, capacity and most important if it's still in tip top condition - wouldn't want to send u a lemon), don't know where my husband stored it, must be in the office somewhere... We are so organized, it wouldn't surprise me if we still have the box AND the instructions... (probablement en Français)

I need to know if u have a compatible connecter(yap, these critters are pre-USB). They were common in older PCs, donno how old yours is/ours were old enough they didn't know what a USB port was(Oh Gee, I'm old!!!).

2-If u find yourself in a bind for lack of space, keep the photos, delete the music. As I told u, not only do we have loads & loads of music (that I can send u/all we need is a GMail accnt. to tinker with), and I also have some great links, so by deleting u'll loose nothing.
We don't have much in our library in the categories u stated (big bands, 50's, etc), but... we'll see! There's lot to choose from. And could be u'll discover other gr8 musik! ;*)

    Peace, Manu

LeKanaw.. now you're bringing back some memories. On 2 of my older computers I still have LS120 floppy drives in them! They were the "big" thing way back for extra storage! I think it was made by Exabyte. And like you, I'm a packrat, I still have instructions, etc. for all that stuff. But, sometimes the odds and ends I keep come in handy, like when a keyboard drops dead, and the old GOOD ones need an adapter to make them fit on the newer machines. Why am I keeping them? Well my flatbed scanner is SO old that I don't even think it would work on the newer machines. And on my 4-in 1 spare printer (that I use just for receiving faxes), I can't always scan lumpy things in there. I do use that occasionally for copying and reducing/enlarging pictures.. especially when daughter gets all those school pictures! She gets the minimum and I make her copies to send relatives.

Does anyone need A/B switches? Remember those? So you could use more than 1 printer?

Gee, the good old days, when we thought a 20 mg HD was really flying high! Now we're into GB. I've got to get rid of some of these older machines.. taking up too much room! Even have an old dos machine in the hallway for when my grandson was just getting started on computers about 3 yrs. ago. He's just turned 8 now. But they were the GOOD games.. Jazz Jackrabbit, the original Duke Nukem, Mystic Towers, Cosmo, etc. For that matter I still love those games myself! Think I'll strip that one down and donate it.. just taking up room and now grandson is into X-box.. so DOS games are too tame for him! Boy they learn fast.

Do you think we could get some high dollars for all the old stuff as "antiques"?? *-)

  8. Hey LeKanaw; thanks for the info.

I did mean disquettes. This was a used computer when I got it - no manuels. I got it through a friend of a friend paying it forward. I can play or upload CD's but I can't burn anything onto a CD. Was going to install a burner but don't have enough space for it to run effectively. I really don't want to delete any music as some of this was REALLY hard to find. I had a "wish list" a mile long of songs and artists that I was looking for and have found all but about 30 songs over the last year.

I know this may be sacrilege but I would rather loose my game files than my music! My music is my sanity. It has gotten me through some very dark times in my life.

I've never heard of a lomega Zip drive - and no - instructions in French would not help me at all - sorry. Have no idea if I could use such a thing with this computer or not. If there is any part of it that has to be installed internally (ie. opening up the tower) then I don't want to do it. I have enough trouble finding the right connections if anything coems loose. With my lack of sight I'd be terrified of screwing up the whole harddrive! I'd have to bribe someone with home made chocolate chip cookies to set it up for me and help me figure out how to run it!

It is very kind of you to offer this to me and to link me to other music. Have no idea how any of these things work.

To the moderators, you have my permission to give my e-address to LeKanaw so we can continue this discussion without hijacking this thread.

    Hi CopMom:

Does anyone need A/B switches? Remember those?

Ohhh boy, do I?? We did have a couple of those, and not only for printers. Had one for VCRs too 8=D
Hubby also concocted a rather complicated install to have just 1 monitor for 2 PCs, as at the time screens were way too expensive for us and we also lacked the space. But it didn't last long though, more often than not we were waiting for the other to finish to get our work done. As u can imagine, some arguing ensued...
Good times indeed, as u say!!

Oh Yeahh, we *still* have those first computers around here somewhere. Somewhere along the years we threw out the Commodore64!!!
You make me laugh!! We ALSO have an old flatbed scanner, that is still compatible w ...... NOTHING at ALL!!! Arrghhrr
Hey, btwn your stuff and mine, we could open an "Antiques" shop!!! Bwhahawhawa

Hi Winterpegger (Oh, I DO like this word, a LOT!! It's fun to say)
No no, there is NOTHING to be installed internally! Not to worry. I'm crazy but not insane.
    Well... maybe a little :>)
It's like the ancestor of a modern external, only it works in a different way w different connectors.
There were NO USB's at the time, remember?

No, for me loosing games is not that important, I'm not a gamer AT ALL! B4 coming here only had played a couple of games in the past ~25y. But I have a GameBoy, which I only had time to play with maybe a couple of times during the same 25y!!! Work, work, work, that's all we did...

I quite understand your reservations about deleting/losing *Music*. Music is essential to one's well being. Don't worry, we'll concoct something.

BTW, you can NOT authorize the Mods to give me your eMail. They don't have it, as they don't have access to our info, maybe only the Administrators, not even sure of that.
You have to send a PM to Bubby *with* your address, then he will forward it to me.

one note I didn't spot- on the 'activate and text only' games and such, especially the big ones: make sure your system temp directory has enough space for the whole thing, as they stage from there. Good reason to move your temp directory off c: if it's getting full!

I haven't tried it yet (I moved mine the "hard way"), and for all my distaste for eaz fix- under freeware they have this:

    http://www.eazsolution.com/en/download_foldermover.php

    "Software: Folder Mover
    Type: Free
    Size: 1.69Mb
    OS: Win9x/ME/2000/XP
    Version: v1.0

Why move System Folders to another drive or partition?

Most folks place their personal data in My Documents, in Outlook Emails or on Windows Desktop. Unfortunately, these files or folders are by default located on the C: drive, the same drive that contains the Windows operating system. Storing these two things together on the same drive is not a great idea for several reasons. Here are just few:

First, your personal data is very likely to be growing in size while Windows is not. In this era of multi mega pixel digital photos you are in real danger of filling up your C: drive. This progressively degrades Windows performance. Sooner or later you'll fill up the disk and have to make more space by deleting some of your personal files or get into the complex and problem- fraught exercise of increasing the size of your primary disk partition. "

BTW, I moved all 1000+ of my diskettes onto a couple of cd-r's years ago. well, not the 8" ones...

In my disc catalogs I have 442 CD-R's and just burned DVD-R #503. Packrat? naaah. but I'd be sunk without InsideCAT. (free version does 100 discs http://www.insidecat.biz/)

and if y'all pay the shipping, I have an S-100 system with spare boards, a couple of terminals and a 20 meg 8" hard drive I'm giving away...

    Hi GGotd,
I don't know if the spare parts u have would be useful for DNS, since he is legally blind, and I don't know enough to do it for him. But if it is something useful for him, yeah I'll pay the shipping and send everything 2geder from here. I think what he most needs is a bit of extra storage.
Lets see what he says, ok? Thank you for the offer.

  13. Hey guys - not a "he" but a "she" - guess it never ocurred to me to state gender lol!

Thanks goodgotd and LeKanaw for your ever so generous offers. I honestly don't know what is compatable with my system and what isn't. Will try to contact a more computer savy friend here in the city to help me determine what the best options would be - this may take a week or two as they are quite busy.

As I said before, this computer was given to me in Oct.'06 as a "pay it forward". It included a 20gig harddrive with 256mb ram, WinXP pro sp2; keyboard; optical mouse and a 19" moniter. All I had to buy was the speakers, surge protector and mouse pad for optical mouse. In June'07, I was also given an HP Deskjet 930C printer.

I'm on a fixed income and really can't afford to upgrade at this point. Your generous offers are overwhelming. Thank you!!! :)

trust me, winxp won't run on *any* s-100 hardware- CP/M or Oasis 8-bit (z-80 cpu) only- and you can't connect enough 30-pin simms together to make 256 megs, much less better it. those were in response to the a/b switches. I have both serial and parallel stashed. and a timex-sinclair 1000, commodore 64, and an atari 400.... managed to give away the apple ][c...

Fixed income here, too- wife and I both disabled- and all my 'modern' and most of my 'outdated' hardware has been gifted from my 90+ year old high school data processing teacher from 1976-77. Including this laptop off ebay (110 bucks delivered, 4 months ago) to read ebooks on, since I can't afford even paperbacks. If you like sf/fantasy, Baen websriptions gives disabled readers a free unlimited subscription. see below.

if the motherboard is year 2000 or newer, you can install at least an 80 gig hard drive in it, and starting with a 20 gig drive in there, it has to be IDE, not serial ATA.

Alas, the only spares I have are 10 gig or less. Depending on the video card, I *might* have a better spare, but it'd be a low bar to surpass.

And I prefer user names or y'all- remember a boy named sue!

"Baen Books Free to Disabled Readers

Baen Books (www.baen.com), a publisher of science fiction, will provide its books to fans who are blind, paralysed, or dyslexic, or are amputees, in electronic form free of charge, effective immediately.

Baen Books is making this offer in recognition of Veterans Day, and all our disabled military veterans. Many Baen authors are veterans themselves, using a military setting as the setting of their tales. Right now convalescing vets might welcome an exciting, fast-action tale to pass the time.

Jim Baen, founder of Baen Books, who passed on June 28, 2006, decided to "provide each challenged reader with a permanent pass" to the regular e-publication of Baen’s new books. His successor, publisher Toni Weisskopf, is implementing his idea with this program.

Since 1999, Baen has published its new books as ebooks each month, in several formats, with no Digital Rights Management, through WebScriptions (www.webscriptions.net), for a small fee. Now, this service will be available at no cost to the disabled, who must apply for this privilege.

Applications will be processed by ReadAssist (www.readassist.org), a volunteer group devoted to helping disabled readers find the books they want in the form they need, and join the community of fandom. The application form has been set up by ReadAssist, and can be found through either WebScriptions or ReadAssist."

Most of the tech talk is still a foreign language to me - have no idea what any of these things are if it isn't in plain english.. I have learned a lot in the last year - but it isn't easy to teach an aging baby boomer all this "new" stuff. I'm winging most of it. lol!

aging baby boomer. Darn, I can't remember- is that over or under 50? I'm, what, 48?

nevermind, one should never ask a lady her age.

ok. should have posted the 'baen ebooks free to the disabled' separate, but most of the parts stuff is 80's to early 90's stuff. not useful to you at all, to get to the point.

given the specs you gave, the hard drive can be replaced or added to by one 4 times the size without a qualm. I'd bet money I haven't got on it, and that's *really* a done deal, as I don't bet.

I'd *estimate* 6 times current would be nearly as safe a bet, but 8 times that (160 gigs) it might have a chance of troubles.

if it was more than 3 tears old when you got it.

These days, IDE & EIDE are also referred to as Parallel ATA- the simplest explanation is that's the same as all but the *very* newest and most expensive internal CD and DVD drives use to connect up with, a flat ribbon cable, sometimes rolled up into a 3/8" (10mm) round bundle, with 40 pin flat connectors on it at each end and near the middle.

The last few years the trend for new hard drives uses Serial ATA, a skinny little cable with 4 pins.

You don't need that 4-pin type, is what I meant.

most used hard drives and the smaller new ones still around will have the right connection for your computer.

as a baseline, a good brand new 80 gig drive at www.zipzoomfly.com (assuming, my bad) you're in the USA should run about 48 dollars delivered. I've got one of these in 3 of my machines and they've been dead reliable for years. last upgrade was in april 1995, I think.

I'd be making sure your backups are up to date - to get 12 years out of a hard drive is impressive by anyones standards. Usually I put HDDs on the "retirement TO-DO" list once they have their 3rd birthday - but my drives do get punished a bit. The longest I was willing to gamble was almost 5 years, then decided it wasn't worth the trouble.

    sorry, 2005. brain fart.

although, now you mention it, I've got one 6.4 gig in my jukebox machine that's been spinning for about that long. OEM P-166 MMX, intel glued-on heatsink, 32 megs of ram, and an ISA SB32 PnP soundcard. runs winamp all day long.

5 am backups to another computer on the lan, for the one machine that matters, and all these run 24/7- I'm on the 'last longer with fewer start-stop cycles' side of the argument. OTOH, I also have big heatsinks bolted to both sides of the drives.

aside from fans, which is why I'm adding bigger heatsinks and convection chimneys to remove the stupid things as they fail. Had a K6-2/450 running fanless including the p/s for 3 years now... And not an 80 plus supply in the house.

The Caviar SE's have a 3-year warranty and a nice enhancement package over standard caviars, too.

  19. Thanks for the info goodgotd.

I'm not into sf/fantasy - when I do read, it is mostly mystery, fiction or bio's. Since getting a computer and finding the game site haven't had as much time for reading or cooking or cleaning.... lol!

As for a ladie's age. Just hit the 50 peak and looking down the other side! Hope it's not as bumpy going down as it was coming up!

As for adding memory; the site you listed is US and I alas am a Cannuck! Will note the info and pass it on to a computer friend to see what they can come up with. I have a couple of local friends on the look out for backup drives or other such additions for me. Will probably end up getting a flash drive to tide me over till I can afford something more - hopefullt within 6 - 9 months.

Hmm. I'd call us both baby-boomers, and that's why I assumed (I know, I know..) you were in the US as I thought that was peculiar to us yanks.

IIRC canada has some sort of added ouch for media, dunno if it applies to hard drives. Taxes I know are right sharpish compared to oregon- there isn't any sales tax.

Oops. I have a pal up in ontario that dropped out of contact again- thank for reminding me I have to track him down.

    RunesageMagik- FYI:

    >>> no way any regular member is going to send you the secret code because then we will have to shoot them and sell their computers on the black market

not tempted, but beware- in oregun we shoot back.

    goodgotd,
That's just one of the reasons I wish I lived in the NW. Around these parts, the lily-livered wusses ruining things (er, running things) still embrace the moronic concept that only cops and criminals should carry weapons. Not that we listen to them.

RM : Glad that there is a wide deep water between us, your weapon will not reach me. Wouldn't it - he?

one reason I escaped from Kalifornia, too. Long as I'm not in Portland I can carry unconcealed right downtown or in my car. :-) And in a holster isn't concealed!

I couldn't help going into geek mode, but that wasn't that bad- until "baby boomers" came up, that sorta armed the detonator -

Then I scanned back and saw RunesageMagik cracking wise about shooting offenders.

    When I read that I couldn't resist.

    The rest is history...

Graylox, if push came to shove, on a calm day I might could reach out and touch someone at a thousand yards, but hardly across oceans and never ever a GAOTD member!

goodgotd, I prefer CC states. No sense advertising. The element of surprise can come in handy.

BubbyCo, what can I do? These threads derail faster than setting a brick in front of an HO scale model railroad train.

Maybe this new(?) game site will assuage your anti-thread hijacking vapors -

  28. hey goodgotd - we may be aging baby boomers but us Cannucks are peace lovin' folk and most of us don't take to kindly to gun toting. I assumed that runesagemagic's comment about shooting was made with "tongue firmly planted in cheek" but then again...

Play nice boys or I'll use my white cane for more than guiding!
