Daily Comments - Too Much Noise?

(60 posts)

  1. Please comment only on the software here. If you have technical problems or suggestions on our project, please leave us a note in our forums.

This comments section is for statements about the software.

If you have questions, concerns, funny war stories, or just a desire to tell everyone how fast your internet connection is, and how long it takes to download this program - share your news, ask your questions, beg for help, or warn everyone that you have a virus on your PC - do it in the forums.

Most users participate or lurk in the forums. Join them... so people who only want relevant comments don't have to struggle through the extra non-useful "noise".

I'd like to hear what everyone else thinks about the role of comments and forums - and how your use of them could be made easier and relevant?

    - From my viewpoint, trying to help other users - having the same question being asked 20 times when I have already answered it 4 or 5 times - is frustrating.

    - Having pockets of users with problems we know the solution but don't answer because it is buried in the comments section - is frustrating for the user.

    - Having to monitor two sections for issues / bugs / questions - means we might miss some from the comments section - and answered questions in the comments section might remain unanswered in the forums because we don't know about them.

    - Following Question/Response in the Comments section is difficult - scrolling up and down matching poster numbers to answers. When posts get modified - the numbers all change making the numbers less relevant.

    - In the comment section - solutions from previous days are lost when a giveaway ends. I'd like to answer the question "how to activate a game" just the once - make it a FAQ and each day, (gently) push new users over too the topic for help. I'm beyond tired reading program "comments" - "It's only for 30 days. Rip Off!"

    - You can mark topics where you ask a question as a "Favorite Topic" and have GOTD send you an email when someone else posts a comment in that topic. Can't do that on the Front Comments page - there is only the one topic. You just have to read everything in case someone said something.

Please comment only on the software here. If you have technical problems or suggestions on our project, please leave us a note in our forums.

Is this too hard to understand? ;)

Poor BuBBy.. looks like you've had a full and busy day today! But it is nice having someone moderate things.. now if only people would listen! Guess I'm guilty too.. sowwy!

  3. I just want to make it easier for people to be able to ask questions and get answers. I've looked over the comments sections and almost every question gets marked as "not useful" (so it is unloved and unappreciated too) and the questions never get answered.

Or the questions/answers start an irrelevant argument that drags on over the day.

Did you know Ashampoo 6 is free? No it's not! Is that your idea of free? It's a trial. Look again idiot. Hey Ashampoo 6 is free ... for 14 days... No it's $20 off.. Oops sorry my ad block was on - I didn't see it.... Is Ashampoo better than Star Burn.... I've never heard of StarBurn.. are they a scam... Hey Ashampoo 7 isn't free... You idiot it's Ashampoo 6... Thanks... I just installed Ashampoo 6, I think I prefer Ashampoo instead of StarBurn.... I thought today was supposed to be a screensaver....

So if I look tired... *sigh*

I agree completely. If one more person says that they have a dial-up connection or that Whiterabbit/BladedThoth writes the best reviews or that the giveaway is just awesome, or asks a question that's already been asked and answered ten times, I'll go insane and start strangling cats.

At least I refer to people by their names, rather than post numbers.

    No Sir. Not too hard.

But, I will bet that you get no where. You are preaching to the "choir".

BuBBy: The comment about the "choir" is a U.S.A. expression meaning "you are talking to the ones that already have the message". It may lose some of its meaning in translation. To those familiar with the expression it has a broader meaning.

    Hi BuBBy,
you are so right, I really appreciate your suggestions.
With a clear structure it would be much easier to follow the relevant discussions -
    not only for the BuBBies.
You can be lucky, that you can't read the German comments (can you ?). On that site is/was not only too much noise there's a lot of dirt too. I don't know if there is an editor or mod but after sending a mail with some suggestions ( yes, I did it again ) things happened; from earlier 40 comments were 30 left.
I'm by no means for suppressing the freedom of speech.
    Oh, I'm really not!
But some of those comments are no " speech" they are ...oh, I don't know the English word, not even the German.
People coming to this website shall be happy finding a handy application or a nice game, they shall feel free asking their questions, make their commentations and write their review (good or bad) without being snubbed by smart alecks. And finally they find an answer in the forum - if they are willing to read....

Have a good night or day

    ++Yes, it's my writing-day today, you wasn't my only victim ;-)

    ps. I have ashamp...(sorry)
pps. @ Lockett no cats please ! Party tomorrow ?

I'm not entirely clear what "noise" BuBBy is referring to but I am grateful for certain so-called "noise" i.e. statements about software that has alerted me to the drawbacks of installing it. Comments like that can also score low or minus points on "was this comment useful?". But then, I'm not a moderator so it is easy for me to say: "Long may tolerance and free speech continue on this page of GAOTD".

Yes there is to much excess noise in the Front Comments page, and searching through all of that is a pain, but won't it be more of a pain to first search through the Front Comments page and then having to search through the forums for any related installation problems and then tech issues and then alternative freeware and then software reviews?
Perhaps you could automatically create those discussions for each giveaway and post thier links on the Front Comments page at the very top along with the explanation of how to download, activate and install that particular day's giveaway. (Apparently many people are unable to read or follow instructions.) Of course, they probably won't read these either, but at least they can be pointed to the directions rather than having them re-iterated over and over.
My #1 reason for reading the comments is to decide wheter or not I want to download the giveawayoftheday. If I see to many installation problems or other tech issues, I will pass, because messing up my system is not worth getting a free program. For about a month now, I have greatly curtailed my downloading, even though there have been some very good and desirable programs because 1. I had several programs in a row cause significant damage to several of my computers and 2. The incidence of bad installs, system errors, unwanted system additions, etc. has greatly increased.
Oops, I didn't mean to turn this into a gripe session. Rather I was trying to point out that I use the Front comments page to look for other people having tech and installation problems, and would rather not have to go to three or four other long discussions to make my decision.

If your friend's photo has too much noise, you can't see his/her lovely smile. Then you start the GIMP/ photoshop and make it brightly. Eh ?

  11. Rich, by all means gripe away! I've announced today is Gripe Sunday/Monday (depending which side of the pond you live).

I like the idea of the links. I like the idea that once (hopefully) I get the ability to merge/split topics, I can put all the users with "Help I've swallowed my mouse" together in one topic and once we work out how to remove it - I can answer it once. And everyone else who just wants to know if the giveaway works with portable Firefox or supports DivX to Mpeg2 conversions - won't clash or waste their time with the users who are now choking with the final 2 inches of a USB cable hanging from their mouths.

We can still discuss the giveaways, talk about problems get solutions - we already have a thread (or 5) for freeware recommendations - why aren't there more for the recent giveaways - because I have been too busy to dig them up from their separate pages - and go through all the *ahem* useful critiques *cough* to collate the recommendations into a single place where they might actually be useful.

I'd just like to mention that I came on to the forum site seething with rage but - with the above imagery - you've now given me the giggles (and, with a mouthful of tea when I read it - another excuse for buying a new keyboard) ROFL. Thanks BuBBy!

  13. Noise... think of "White Noise" - interference, removes the clarity of signal or purpose. Distraction.

If I asked you to put together the names and website links of all freeware alternatives of the giveaways over the past 2 weeks. You would be forced to read/scan a lot of stuff that had nothing to do with what you were looking for (sometimes only the product name might be mentioned with no website address) - you would be scanning up and down through hundreds of unrelated comments - and going backwards and forward from day to day.

Or we could have lists like http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/forums/topic/723

These forums are for GOTD users - The PTB (Slava etc) let us run our forums fairly independently (within the rules / guidelines we have set) it only makes sense that we work to ensure things run smoothly. We try to help each other out when Giveaways refuse to work, we alert one another if we hear of a good offer or a freebie somewhere - and when looking for a piece of freeware that can help someone to who has inadvertently swallowed their optical mouse. (ok enough already) :)

Lockett, I agree with you that that is annoying, although on certain occasions I have mentioned Whiterabbits reviews. Meanwhile you better call your local mental health dept. then because from what I've seen the folks aren't going to change the way they comment. One thing I will add to that list of gripes is people griping about 'getting another screensaver - everybody knows you don't need those anymore, and nobody wants them'. Also the gripes about the type of game(s) offered, i.e., match-3's, are getting old.

Now for an 'important' announcement: Folks, you had all better go hide your cats from Lockett, cos he's getting ready to start strangling them...LOL.

"At least I refer to people by their names, rather than post numbers."

As for the names/numbers comment; I find using the number helpful in finding the poster being mentioned, rather than taking the time to hunt down a specific post with the person's name in it. When I am addressing or referring to a poster, I include the number and the poster's name of the comment I am referring to. That's especially useful if that person has more than one comment posted.

For the SECOND time BuBBy has deleted one of my comments (trying to protect all of you AND myself) from potentially bad products! Neither time did I use profane language ... neither time did I say something that was out of line, however I am NOW getting quite angry that even the suggestion that important comments questioning whether we should or should not download a particular product are being censored out. There is simply NO excuse for abusing the GAOTD regulars (of which I am one).

    SHAMEFUL!

You want these comments on the forum? Fine, but they belong in the daily comments section too!! THAT'S where the majority of visitors try to learn if a particular software is one they want to risk trying. Today's offering unfortunately suffers from several problems which I was VERY happy to learn before downloading it. I don't at all consider those warnings to be "noise" as BuBBy puts it. Repetetive points ... yes, but not legitimate questions about whether the download disables competetive software on my machine. Several people brought that concern up and so far nobody has answered it. That alone is enough for me to take a pass, but if you're going to prevent this very valid point from being read on the main comment section you're doing EVERYONE a serious dis-service.

If this comment is deleted from the main comment area (along with anyone else's attempts to raise valid warnings about problems with the software) I PROMISE to do all I can to warn people to avoid GAOTD from now on because they can't be trusted to take care of the people they claim to be trying to satisfy. It's truly THAT simple. You owe me and everyone else a HUGE apology! I have never had reason to complain here before so imagine my surprise when the first time I raise a valid point I'm censored! This behavior on your part is simply reprehensible!

    NOT COOL AT ALL!!!

  21. Hello Planecrazy. First off I'd like to say that if there is some form of Dangerous software ie Malware, Trojan, Virus or even even some type of advertising toolbar that is not listed,,,,,,,,,,Then I agree with you. But............... If its a bad product (in whomever opinion), let me be the judge of that for myself.

I don't download much from GOTD to use but I did download Starburn and I even used it after rebooting to rip a DVD that was encrypted. Starburn worked flawlessly. Thats as far as I have taken it. (On several occasions in the past I have downloaded and disassembled software when members have made complaints about limited functions of software being offered here as full functioning and reported back the findings here in the forum with no deletions or snip's taken from any of my posts.)

I have no idea what your talking about as far as comments being delete/removed but as Lockett has stated there are more people here with all the little buttons that can do a lot more than the Mods.

FYI here is what happened to my system upon installing Starburn and I have many other programs that do the same thing. Note that there were no existing files modified. AND I'm not employed by anyone in this fight so this is an independent observation/finding.

  22. Guys. Lets remember what they say about feeding trolls.

Anyone can go through yesterdays comments - there are maybe 5 or 6 other people who also feel the same way about reading comments from the forum pages. (It is too much effort apparently). But I asked for opinions - and they had their say. Clearly there is no vendetta to silence dissent, and put down the GOTD mutiny. sigh.

There are a lot more users who would rather be able to link to specific topics for the giveaway - each on major categories such as "Installation and Setup Issues", "Tips and Suggestions", "3rd Party Freebies" and a "General Discussion/Chat" - The comments page was suggested to be for "Comments", "Testimonials" and "Reviews" - Stuff that isn't a question that requires a "Response".

Several users commented and PMed me that they appreciated the comments being moderated and the "excess" and "repeats" were removed to reduce the overall volume of comments without reducing the scope of coverage. An example of what lots of people found annoying in the past - was reading question a further 20 or 30 times after it had been resolved or addressed. Maybe for some users, repeating other peoples questions is a "contribution" to the discussion. Maybe people can't be bothered reading the existing stuff before asking a question because there is so much extra crap there that it is just easier to "ask it again".

Consider is it easier to follow 10 separate discussions (but on topic) each on their own page... or do we take 10 separate discussions - put them through a shredder and assemble them into a single page - the topics all crammed in together.

You want to read all the comments related to installing the software and getting it running. Do you choose to read through the "shuffled" and repeating 10 foot long page - or do you take the single sheet of paper with just the posts related to installation and setup? (and because it is manageable) people can read that single page before asking questions - so less duplication and moderation required - and the moderators can go off, count their truckloads of money, and focus on their plans for world domination.

  23. That does make it much easier for those having problems. Some are just so excited about getting there software to install/run that they fail to search and create a thread. I've noticed alot of times that they are redirected to the correct thread.

Nothing wrong with trimming, deleting or redirecting as long as the person understands why.

...and now that I'm back in front of my computer, allow me to respond.

First of all, I do not even remotely qualify as a "troll." I have been an active participant in the comment section from time to time, and mostly I have defended the site (as you are attempting to do) from misguided or un-constructive posts. Furthermore, I have generally appreciated the efforts by the moderators here.

Now having said that, I have two issues that I believe are both valid and worthy of remaining in the comments section.

    1. Several people commented prior to my deleted posts that Starburn caused their other burning software to stop recognizing their CD-burners. As somebody who uses several different burning products (for various reasons) I find this to be a "dangerous" tendency for ANY piece of software to do, and in trying to evaluate whether I should download and install Starburn it is a point which DESERVES mention in the comments section. I shouldn't have to go looking for pros AND cons of a particular product elsewhere - it should be easily accessable in one place. This sort of thing is VERY different than technical problems somebody might have with the installation, which I agree can be better addressed in the forums.

    2. My assumption that BuBBY is the one deleting my posts is a reasonable one, given that he/she has been in and out of this particular comments thread both yesterday and today, AND because he/she is the one who initially "voiced" the opinion that these sorts of comments didn't belong in the comments section (which clearly they do). As I mentioned already, NEITHER of my prior comments were either offensive in language or in tone (I will post one or both below if I have them), so I don't particularly appreciate those of you on your "high horses" from passing judgement without having all the information ... I wouldn't do that to you (and haven't here).

Now, since Archangel was kind enough to report his/her installation information, I would pose two questions in your direction: 1. Do you run Nero, Roxio, or any other burning software which was installed when you installed Starburn? AND 2. Do they still function properly? If the answer is "yes" and "yes," not only does that increase my confidence that Starburn is worth trying, but I would strongly encourage you to post the answers in the comments section, where you can answer those who don't come here but are wondering the very same thing.

Now, here is a copy of my first deleted post ... I welcome any comments on it but I still don't see anything in it that was either offensive or inappropriate, and I still believe that we ALL are owed an apology for it having been removed from the place it belonged ... in the comments section where others could "make their own minds up" (as stated above) about whether to take a chance on a particular product. Keep in mind that this comment originally appeared directly after BuBBy's opinion that everything not directly related to the software should go to the forums - my position is that my comments ARE directly related to the software ... see if you agree.

"Sorry, BuBBy, but I have to agree with several others who stated quite correctly that if there are technical problems with a particular product that are going to cause trouble for people, those issues NEED to be listed HERE in the comments section.

I don’t lurk in the forums, and I don’t feel the need to search them for basic (BUT IMPORTANT) info that will help me decide whether to take a chance on a given product offered for only one day. I agree that topics unrelated to the product itself should be taken to the forums, but today’s issues and questions regarding hijaacking web browsers and deactivating other competing products most definitely belong RIGHT HERE where I and everyone else can see them BEFORE making the decision to download and install the product.

I can tell you right now that I was very excited by today’s offering, but when I hear others claiming that this product messes around with other software I may have installed that puts up a HUGE red flag. Since nobody has been able to answer the repeated question of whether Starburn “knocks out” Roxio, Nero, and potentially other products I have no choice but to take a pass on it … It’s not worth the risk and aggravation to take a chance on it unless I hear conclusively that I have nothing to worry about.

I suspect most other GAOTD regulars would agree with me.

    Regards,
    Steve"

Now, was that so horrible that it needed to be censored? Was it offensive? Was it off point? The answer is "no," "no," and "no." Any reasonable person would (and should) consider the things I stated before trying any software, and there was absolutely no reason to pull this or the followup comment off the comments page. As it happens I no longer seem to have the followup so I can't post it here, but it was essentially similar, with the addition of my shock and dismay that the first one was censored to begin with.

Flame me all you want, but you can't change the fact that my statement above was reasonable, relevant, and above all, respectful, and I was NOT accorded the same respect from BuBBy (or whomever chose to delete my comments, though I'm quite confident it WAS BuBBy).

    Respectfully,
    Steve

Oh, by the way, Archangel, I agree with your statement that there is "Nothing wrong with trimming, deleting or redirecting as long as the person understands why," but as you can now see from reading my deleted post above that is clearly NOT what happened here. Furthermore, BuBBy's trivializing of my post above only proves that he/she somehow thinks that toying with us is a joke. My only response to that is if YOU had a number of valid points that had NOT been repeated over and over already and your entire post was simply deleted with no response and no explanation whatsoever you'd be P'O'd too!

So to BuBBy, I'll simply state again that you owe not only me but ALL of us an apology, not only for deleting or changing relevant posts, but now also for being dismissive and attempting to make a joke out of "screwing around" with people for no reason other to make them angry (which I have a right to be given your flippant attitude about it).

I said it before and I'll repeat it here. It's shameful! I happen to be "one of the good guys" on a number of very well behaved forums so I don't take lightly to being abused on this one. You have a lot to learn about being a moderator - I hope you learn something constuctive from this so that you don't put off others who haven't done anything wrong.

  29. I don't see anything wrong or offensive about your post and have no idea why it would have been deleted. Also let me say that my post was not meant to flame you either.

If you knew my background and do a search in this forum you'd find that I'm a straight forward, straight shooting, take no crap type of guy. I don't like the wool being pulled over my eyes or anyone else's either. You'd find that people here made claims, I checked them out myself and if confirmed, I spoke out so I'm nobodies mouthpiece either. If I found a problem with a "Giveaway" (and I have on a couple occasions) I was very specific. (again do a search and you'll find them)

But just because someone was just clicking the "Next" button during installation and didn't uncheck the box setting Rocket.whatever.com as there startup page, is there mistake not a malicious act of the developer. (Thats just my opinion though).

Now if the software being installed removed, replaced or modified any part or portion of another piece of software installed on a PC then that is!!! Is this your claim? If it is someone else's, let them come forward and "Tell it like it is".
When someone makes a claim they should be specific to what the software or installation did that corrupted other software or devices or they can ask someone knowledgeable to check it out before they go so far as to chastise the develper.

    Answers to your Questions.

    1. Nero (yes but limited the use now) Roxio (no)
    2. Question Do they still work? Nero (yes I just burnt the image I ripped with StarBurn earlier today.

I stated earlier that I use several programs. Let me go a little further. When I rip a DVD I use a program that will convert it to Xvid or DivX (avi format) so I can burn several movies to a single DVD. Its just economical for me to do it that way. I'm always searching for THE program that will do it quickly and still maintain high quality. So I have 3 converters and ripper/writers and then Nero which I use very little now days.

I can tell that you are one of the "Good Guys" Steve and are making a valiant effort in what you believe in. Theres nothing wrong with that. (The case of the Deleted/Removed posts).

But in the case of Sabotage well that case is (as we'd classify it) "Unfounded". Brother, I'm one of the "Good Guys" too more than you'll ever know but its simply not there. I don't know what corrupted the devices but I've got a very good guess though!

Oh and you made a suggestion about making it known in the comments GOTD's homepage. Well LOL it is what it is. Its suppose to be comments on the software. If I had a problem, I'd look here for problem solving, that is if there is one.

    Archangel,

Thanks for the thorough response and the kind and fair assessment of my post. I did not intend to imply that you were one of the people belittling me for raising this issue so if it came across that way I apologize.

Also, regarding the "claim" that Starburn messes with other burning software, I didn't personally make the claim but I DID notice that more than one other person did claim problems after installing Starburn - that's what caught my attention initially and that's what put up red flags in my attempt to decide whether or not to download and install it. I felt it was appropriate to ask again whether anyone knew the answer, since it hadn't been answered even after at least two others asked about it. I know the moderators try to eliminate duplicate questions when they've already been addressed, but this one hadn't been until now - and of course the casual visitor typically (in my opinion) won't go to the forums to try and get a basic idea of whether a particular offering is a good one or bad one. I'm a case in point, since this is the first time I've ventured into the forums. Prior to today I never felt the need to dig further - most comment pages (and I read them all) generally answer the questions I may have. I also generally check out Bladedthoth's reviews.

I was also troubled by the difficulty some were having in reversing the browser "hijaacking," but quickly realized that although Rocket made a bad choice making the homepage box an "opt-out" decision rather than an "opt-in," those problems were created by the users who didn't install more carefully, and who failed to uncheck the box.

So those two issues led to my original post and after all that happened here we are..

Ironically enough, when I got home a few hours ago and read your initial post I was inclined to go ahead and take a chance, but for whatever reason GAOTD chose to end the download period earlier than they usually do so I'll have to wait until the next opportunity to give it a whirl. Normally the downloads are available until 2am my time so I'm bummed about missing it after finally deciding it was worth giving a try.

    Steve
